I remember back in March when people were calling Onward's $40 Million opening a flop, and now it ended up being the 3rd best opening weekend of 2020. What a world we live in.
I still had to pay money in order to even get an opinion of it. The shame in entertainment when something is bad you can't get your money back. This is the type of business where you can peddle shit while riding the wave of an established brand and still make profit.
@@ThreadBomb I assume he meant that they were more likely to give it a favorable review. No need for paying people off. I'm sure the studios have a good idea of how certain critics will probably react to a film.
Yep; i know Dan wants to assume the best of his peers, but early access is basically a roundabout bribe. Getting access can mean anything from higher views on your content due to trending before the competition, to a less hectic work schedule to produce that content; that's valuable, especially for small outlets and independent reviewers who don't have the contacts and prestige to fall back on if a studio blacklists them. (and especially if it's industry-dominating studios like Warner or Disney)
I really dislike the way Rotten Tomatoes does the scoring... How many people you think know a 76% means 76% of critics gave it a "positive" score? Most people I know think it means the average critic score is 76%
Yeah, it is totally not intuitive. 100% of the critics giving a movie 61, barely fresh, is a much worse movie than 50% of the critics giving it 80 and 50% giving it 59, but the tomatometer would call one fresh 100% and the other rotten 50%.
Exactly, then you look at the average score and it's like 6.2 meaning average yet they'll make it look like everyone adored it. Also I really dislike the Verified Audience thing, it excludes most of the world and makes it look like anyone who isn't from the US (ie "verifiable") to be a troll, which we're not.
Re: WW84's drop - I'd say whenever fewer people were going to see a movie in theaters (either because they choose not to watch the movie due to bad reviews, or because they will watch it at home), the initial drops will be larger, because those who REALLY want to see the movie in theaters and have the means to do so are the ones going on opening weekend. After that weekend, you have less of the die-hard fans in your audience and more people who can more easily be swayed to just not go to the theater at all for this one. In other words, those reasons for less people seeing the movie in theaters have larger effects in post-opening weeks than in the initial days. The people too excited to skip the movie in theaters are showing up during the first weekend.
@@Glassesgorilla Yes, big superhero movies (or big event films in general) tend to have huge first weeks followed by above-average drops. But it's not usually to this extent, as demonstrated by the comparison with other DCEU drops that Dan provides. Sure, the bigger the film, the larger opening crowds, the higher the first drop (theoretically anyways). But I don't think WW84 would normally be on the same scale as BvS or Suicide Squad (expectation-wise before seeing it, that is).
WHAT KIND OF WARLOCK POWERS DO YOU POSSESS DAN MURRELL?!?!? I totally watch this while making dinner every Monday! Today was an especially mentally taxing day at work, so your awesome review of the charts was just the thing to help me unwind. Plus while "watching" I was making Molletes, which are one of my favorite, easy to make comfort foods.
Happy (belated?) Birthday! You have been my favorite reviewer of not only movies, but the industry, the news, everything going on. Wouldn't have remained sane throughout 2020 without you. Stay awesome!
Well done Dan! Saw you live in NYC at Schmoedown and was part of that great chant we all got going for you. Still cheering for ya, even if it's from my couch.
I loved this episode dan, I mentioned the average score and the tomato meter number in your vid last week so I love that you incorporated that into this latest update on WW. It’s so much more interesting to track the underlying stats like you did here Also Happy Birthday 😊
I have heard a few critics and folks who saw the movie initially, enjoyed it and began souring on it. Mr. Sunday Movies specifically said this as did Double Toasted. The more they thought on it, the more the movie sank in their minds. When it came out at 88% I was even more hyped for it and felt let down when I saw it. I wonder how many second and third wave reviewers had a similar experience.
Same happened to me, first time and I enjoyed the movie, not great but entertaining. But the scene where Diana had sex with that guy bothered me, since that I can’t stop thinking she rapped him 😓 and my opinion on the movie has dropped a lot, not just for that scene but for all the other issues
Yeah, I think this is a classic case of "fridge logic", where time to think means your opinion goes down. Look at the distinction Dan makes between reviews released when the embargo was lifted, and reviews released before the general release. That second group of reviewers would also have seen the movie pre-embargo, but released their reviews later for whatever reason. More time to think is probably the reason their scores were lower.
Hmm, I don't think there's really much to chew on about this film, its a simple dumb plot superhero film. Call me sceptical but I think its more a case of the "critics" (I call them reviewers, there are very few actual critics nowadays) being favourable to the studios to get their early access and then following the general opinion as time goes on. That was very apparent with the Star Wars sequels, the media started by raving about them all, and then when the public opinion soured they started to write hit articles about how divisive and underwhelming it was.
Happy birthday! My birthday was a few days ago. Not a great time of year for a birthday because of the holidays, but Charts with Dan always feels like a present!💜
It could also be that early access reviewers don't want to burn any bridges. Plus they're so excited to see it first. I got to see guardians of the galaxy early and told people it was pretty good and fun but nothing amazing. Then everyone loved it and made me think more positive about it because of the excitement. Definitely a social effect.
I think you are right on the money with these observations about critics. I have always doubted how many truly judge a movie and how many other are influenced by word of mouth. Jumping on a bandwagon seems always the safer option for them. Nobody likes to sit on an island alone. In this case, I believe a lot saw the mix/negative reviews and jumped on the hating this movie bandwagon. It’s easy with DC movies and they get clicks for their articles. WW84 isn’t a perfect movie but it sure isn’t a 60% RT score movie. Something happened. And I don’t believe it was fair.
Bc the fan, internet reaction was very negative on release day. And the majority of negative reviews came after that. They wanna give what the people want to hear. It’s unfortunate people have nothing better to do then trash a movie.
Happy Birthday, man!!! Your project of investigating how reviewers are influenced by other reviews sound extremely interesting. Watching the fall of WW84 also made me curious about that same subject. I would love to see you studying the data and giving us your conclusions. Sounds like an amazing idea. Happy New Year and, again, Happy Birthday!
Regarding the "does knowing the impact of the movies while reviewing impact" issue I guess provably it does. People don't like to be an outlier. People, in general, want to be part of the group. And therefore it's easier for people to tilt one way or another if there are many voices in that direction. And that doesn't even mean they thought that way originally. It can bring honesty or it can bring conformity.
It also impacts expectations, which can play out multiple ways as well. One way is that you find it isn't quite as good/bad as you heard, so you rate it lower/higher accordingly. But it can also mean that you've heard about certain things, and so you're more apt to notice them, and therefore, that impacts things.
This is completely not true for movie critics. Movie critics usually have a different score than the audience on RT and are PROUD of it, lording it over regular movie goers even in their comments. Just look at other RT movie scores, and you can see movie reviewers do not change their opinions based on audience reception.
I can't generalize my opinion but I will say that if I see that a film has been getting negative reviews I tend to be more critical and tend to try and look for errors that are pointed out in the bad reviews instead of blanking my mind and letting the movie take me away on its journey. Oh and Happy b day Dan, love your reviews and charts, hope 2021 is better for all of us
Happy birthday, Dan. UK viewer here, thought I’d mention (regarding your thoughts on global openings for WW84) that it did actually open in cinemas here.
