    Paul Reiser the actor that played "Burke" brought his mother to an advanced screening. She cheered when his character died. He got his own mom to hate his character. That's talented acting! LOL

    Actually fun fact; the scene where Newt (the little girl) fell down the big slide, they had to shoot it a whole bunch of times because she couldn't stop laughing. It was, apparently, a very fun slide.
    After they got the take where she was screaming, they just let her play on the slide for the rest of the day.

      Apparently, Carrie Henn (Newt) went down the slide on purpose in each take so James Cameron made a deal with her and said that if they can do a proper take, she can go on the slide as many times as she wants.

      Here's another one. The scene where the Xenomorph rises out of the water behind Newt, the water was heated but said heater had been left on all day before they were shooting at night. As a result the water was too warm for Carrie and the suit actor, so they just sat on the side with their feet in the water while it cooled down. I just love that image of Newt and this Xenomorph, just sitting together, kicking their feet in the water and shooting the breeze.

      Here's another fun fact....the scene where Bishop does the Knife trick for Hudson was supposed to be Bishop just doing the trick with his own hand, but the Director told the other actors to grab Paxton and slide his hand underneath and do the trick without telling Paxton. So that look of Terror on his face was actually real......

      When the grit hits the fan though, Hudson DOES fight like a real soldier. He saves Newt from one of the facehuggers when she and Ripley get locked in by Burke, and goes down bravely fighting (literally, goes down into a hole) in the last standoff. He's just been all tense and stressed-out for much of the movie because he only had four more weeks on his contract and then he'd be out. Plus, he's a motor-mouth, so can't stop talking. But he's really not a coward. You think he will be, because the movie sets him up that way, but he's one of the longest-living marines, so he can (and does) fight. :)

      When I was a kid, like 6 I think, I snuck downstairs late one night because at that age you KNOW all the best TV is on late at night, that was just logic. So I flip on the TV and there's a movie on and it's clearly for me. There's these cool soldiers, with cool guns and their in space so it's everything I love... Then the monsters start coming out of the walls and I slam off the TV and sprint back to me room and cower under the covers. I had nightmares about Xenomorphs at my bedroom window or crawling across my ceiling for weeks after that. I think it's actually because of that experience that I love this movie so much as an adult.

    I’m a sucker for behind the scenes stuff. The scene where they first land on LV-426, and the troops emerge from the tank is genius, and here’s why. Its a soundstage! They were never outside. They had a guy up top with a large hose spraying rain in the air, making the ground (coating the floor with dirt and sand) wet. Also, the background sky is just a huge matte painting of a gray, cloudy sky. THATS how you make a film look good, without spending ridiculous amounts of money like they do now. I’ll take practical effects any day over CGI! You have limited money and resources, so you have to be creative, and innovative to get what you need on film.

    • @AximandTheCursed
      @AximandTheCursed 8 місяців тому +4

      Amen. They should only use CGI for things that can't be done any other way, instead of using it every chance they get. Mad Max: Fury Road was a near-perfect example of this.

    • @ericechols6056
      @ericechols6056 8 місяців тому +4

      Yes, nothing like practical effects. For the Queen Alien, it took 14-16 puppeteers to operate her arms, legs and body movements, also it was lifted by a crane in some of the scenes and hydraulic system, and the head was animatronics, which could move by remote-control. Just Awesome! These practical effects still hold up almost 40 yrs., later and look so real. We really don't need CGI.

    • @snorpenbass4196
      @snorpenbass4196 8 місяців тому +5

      @@ericechols6056 I wouldn't say it isn't needed, but it is heavily misused. The best use is for creating scenery that can't be done practically (not "hard to" do, I mean literally impossible) or for adjusting and enhancing practical effects. An excellent example is how Jon Favreau used it in Zathura and Iron Man - the robot and Iron Man suits were all done with practical effects enhanced by CG.

    The extra scenes were:
    1. The part where Ripley finds out about her daughter.
    2. The scenes inside the colony before they encounter the aliens in which the station manager says that he was given some coordinate to check out without being told why.
    3. The scene of Newt and her family encountering the alien spaceship.
    4. A bit more dialogue between Ripley and Newt after the latter is found by the marines (I think, I'm not sure if all of it is in the theatrical release)
    The sum of these scenes emphasizes the theme of motherhood to flesh out Ripley's motivation, as well as show that Burke played a part in getting the colonists killed (without those colony scenes in the beginning, all we have is Ripley telling the audience that Burke was responsible).

    What was added for the extended version was;
    Burke telling Ripley that her daughter had died in the fake garden setting (the picture of her "daughter" was actually IRL Sigourney Weaver's own mother).
    EVERYTHING on the colony BEFORE the marines arrive - everything with the office workers and Newt's family finding the derelict.
    Some of Bishop's grandstanding inside the APC when they're about to leave the Sulaco.
    The entire sequence with the sentry guns (counting down how much ammo they have left).
    Ripley and Hicks telling each other their first names before Ripley leaves to rescue Newt.

    So, in the theatrical release, one of the big things that's left out is finding out Ripley had a daughter. The story is still great horror/action/sci-fi film without it, but knowing that Ripley had a daughter and knowing that she lost her in such a twisted way adds this tragically beautiful element to the story that pays off perfectly at the end. These two tragic characters with similar tragedies found each other. It makes that mommy hit so hard at the end. Seeing the colony thriving was also cut from the theatrical release. It adds an extra weight to physicslly see these 60-70 families. Children who are raised on that base probably their entire childhood. Their home. The scene near the end with Hicks & Ripley introducing themselves as "Dwayne" & "Ellen", which adds another layer to the progession of their subtle relationship dynamic that had kinda been happening in the background and a cute way to wrap that part of the story as it pertains to this movie in particular.

    • @ChrisS-no3ft

      Cutting the scene where Ripley learns her daughter has died was the worst cut because a HUGE number of us were convinced Newt was carrying a xenomorph.
      Personally I like it better without the scenes of the colony that were added. They are fine scenes in and of themselves but to me it spoils the ominous mystery a bit.

    Just to add a bit of context: one of the things cut out of the theatrical cut was everything with the sentry guns, but the reason that's important is because _that's_ how the aliens got in the ceiling to crawl behind the barricades. They swarmed the sentry guns and used the acid blood spray to eat a hole in the ceiling, and used the pile of their own dead to climb up into the air duct.

    Some say the scene where we learn Ripley had a daughter helps to show why Ripley would go back for Newt at the end of the movie - dear internet people, Ripley WENT BACK FOR THE CAT in the previous movie... You think she'd leave a little defenseless GIRL to the mercy of a bunch of slavering murderous aliens?! If that's what you think you don't understand the character of Ripley at all.
    Also, you can tell early on that something is "off" with Burke - he appears helpful, or he tries to be at least, but he isn't very thoughtful or considerate in his attempts. For example, he tells Ripley she's been lost in space for 57 years just like that, at a time when she's still recovering from the after-effects of her long hypersleep, and might not be prepared to hear stuff like that yet. And he tells her straight out he's been reading her psychologist's reports - something which would upset or anger most people to hear.
    Maybe you think maybe he's just a bit of a d--ky douche who can't help it, you might not guess that he's actually a full-blooded, clear-cut psychopath with virtually no regard for other peoples' lives, who's just play-acting at being a human being...

    Part of the extra director's cut scenes were the whole sequence of what went on with the colonists, life on the colony, Newt's family finding the alien ship, the facehugger getting her dad....none of that was in the theatrical cut. In that version, they have that hearing with Ripley and then it cuts to Burke contacting her to tell her about losing contact with the colony. So it's all a mystery to the viewer, with only what is discovered by the crew and recounted by Newt to fill in what has happened. I'm not sure if anything else in the film had expanded scenes.

    Aliens is by far the best sequel ever made to any movie, and the special edition just gives you more of a back story on why Ripley bonds so fast with Newt that she had a daughter pretty much the same age, when Cameron was writing the movie his working title was, the battle of the mothers, as at the end it would come down to Ripley defending and protecting Newt and the queen her little bugs.
    Paul Reiser was in that sitcom Mad about You, and that is why Cameron picked him is because he would be the last person you would think of to be the bad guy, a funny thing, Paul's mother went to the premier with him and when he dies at the end of the movie his mother actually jumped up and cheered.
    this movie stands the test of time i think it would do good even now if it was just released for the first time, the special effects are a little outdated in a few things but that movie rocks and Ripley kicks ass in this movie....
    Bill Paxton was the only actor to be killed by an Alien, a Terminator and a predator in the movies.

    The theatrical version does not include the scene in the beginning with focusing on Ripley's relationship with her daughter and also the colonists and the first facehugger. I personally prefer this edition for lore reasons, but I agree with James Cameron that the scene's removal is better for the pacing of the action and upholding the suspense up until the crew's first encounter with Newt. But this edition exemplifies the themes of mothers and children.

    The two most important scenes that weren't in the original theatrical releases, are when Burke tells Ripley about the daugter she'd left on Earth with a promise to return for her 11th birthday, a promise which Ripley failed to keep due to being in stasis for 57 years. Her daughter died of natural causes 2 years before the events of Aliens. That was why Ripley wouldn't break her promise to Newt, no matter what the cost. The other scene was Newt's backstory as to how her family died, when they discovered the crash-landed ship in the colony. In the theatrical releases, it isn't clear what Ripley meant when she accused Burke of sending "those people" to investigate, knowing they would die. In the Special Edition, it's clear that Burke was trying to get someone impregnated to get them through the space equivalent of "customs", and decided to sacrifice Newt's family for this purpose.
    There are plenty of other scenes I could have mentioned, these are just the two most pivotal to the plot.

    A few things I have picked up from behind the scenes and reading the novelisation of the film. The APC was originally a Airplane tow truck from London Heathrow airport which was so heavy that they had to reinforce the floors for the interior shots of the atmosphere Station which was an abandoned power station in the UK that has been used in several movies. The reason why Ripley got Hudson to work on the computer to find plans schematics of the facility was because he was the tech expert and she knew he would calm down doing his skill. The photograph of Ripleys daughter is actually Weavers mother irl. The mech loaders had a person inside the suit to help moving it and the crew played a practical joke on weaver where they installed a balloon around the guys groin and she thought he was getting excited. The Alien queen was operated by several crew members, 2-3 guys inside the body and several people operating the legs, the effects was amazing, especially when the lights casted on the head when it came fir her.

    Let's do a little mathematics here. While dreaming Burke told Ripley that she'd been in space for 57 years, but that wasn't specifically stated by Burke after Ripley awakened from her nightmare. Burke said, her daughter died at age 66 two years prior, before Ripley was found. Ripley saw her daughter last at age 10 then 56 years later her daughter dies, at 66 and Ripley is found 2 years later after her daughter dies. So, Ripley was age 30 in the first Alien movie, and was found 58 years later, that makes her 88 years old. Fun Fact: The photo in the scene, which is supposed to be Ripley's daughter, Amanda is actually Sigourney Weaver's real-life mom. Newt was on the Alien planet for about 30-40 days, based off original Aliens script.

The only real difference I can think of in the director's cut is that you didn't know Ripley had a daughter, and they didn't show newt or her family in the beginning. So it would have seemed more like she was adamant in saving Newt simply because she was a child and not because of the trauma of losing a daughter and breaking a promise of being there to a child again.
    Other extra scenes I just remembered: 5)The automatic remote guns in the hallway

      There's also the extended scene with Hicks showing Ripley how to work the guns (before all the chaos sets off) - in the theatrical cut it's very quick, if at all there (I can't remember). Also, Hudson rambling about their weaponry during the drop is not in the theatrical cut.

    So differences between the Theatrical and Special Editions: in the theatrical cut, none of the pre-infestation scenes from the colony were included, the scene about Ripley’s daughter was cut, the scenes with the robotic sentry guns were cut, and I think the dialogue about ant hives was cut too, plus a few other small bits I can’t think of.

    I absolutely LOVE the scene on the reveal of Ripley's daughter existence on the Special Edition, but I absolutely HATE the colony scene from the Special Edition in the beginning because it diminishes the mystery of what happened before they arrive on the planet. I always recommend the theatrical cut to first time viewers because most ppl enjoy this movie and want to see it again and then the Special Edition is perfect for second viewings with the extra scenes.

    People who have already seen the movie ALWAYS recommend the Director's cut just because it has more content. But that's not always the better version. I think the theatrical version is better for a first viewing. It's been cut down to give you a fast-paced film and the pacing int he theatrical cut of Aliens was incredible. It was very intense...much more so than the Director's cut. I would have recommended the Theatrical cut for your first viewing...there's so much content already. If you want to know more THEN you watch the Director's cut. More is not always better.

    • @maninredhelm
      @maninredhelm 8 місяців тому +1

      I strongly agree with you, but it's a losing battle. The theatrical version is much better paced. Ripley doesn't need to have had an actual daughter to care about Newt. The colonist clip kills some early suspense and is jarring because the camera never moves far from Ripley for the rest of the movie. Hudson's speech is unnecessary, we've already been shown the brashness and overconfidence of the marines multiple times and it lessened some of the tension at that moment. The flicker of attraction between Ripley and Hicks wasn't terrible but didn't need to be overtly stated. I did like the sentry guns though, the ammo countdown made me very anxious the first time I saw it.

  • @johnbowersox738
    @johnbowersox738 8 місяців тому

    The reason people prefer the extended version (or at least I do) because it goes into the death of Ripley's daughter which shows why she was so attached to Newt. Newt was around the age of her daughter when she last saw her.

The season took a lot of obvious cues from Aliens, and the you have what appears to be be Burke showing up as the company man, and you are instantly suspicious of this dude, just waiting for him to sell out his fellows and the kids for his own gain..... only for him to actually turn out to be a pretty good guy. • @MrFilbot

    I’m anti Special Edition. At least for your first time watching it’s not great thematically, you see the colony too soon, you hear that someone sent them there to find the Derelict ship long before Ripley’s revelation. Theatrically we should arrive with the marines boots on the ground it’s all an unknown to the audience till then. They basically telegraph that there will be a queen with their Bees conversation.. Ripley’s daughter is practically worthless aside from establishing some backstory for her. She’s never mentioned in 1 or later in the movie.. the sentry guns are cool but hardly necessary. It works well enough to buy into them being relatively secure barricaded within the complex.

    "Aliens": Third Officer Ripley is found and returned to Gateway station with a Xenomorph-size case of PTSD. What will the Weyland-Yutani Suits make of her blowing up the "Nostromo"? I had an unanswered question about Ripley in 1986, which was answered with the Special Edition Laserdisc(!) in 1990. 2:22 "Mad About You" (1992-2019) was the TV show. 11:23 Ripley shows Sgt. Apone and Cpl. Hicks that she isn't a "front office paper shuffler" like Burke, but a working class dog, like them. 15:53 In 1986, I noticed that Ripley was able to "get close, quickly" to Rebecca, unlike the female Colonial Marines. A reviewer at the time said: "Sisterhood!" The SE version confirmed my suspicion that Ripley had been a parent.

I like the 3rd film, because it's very gritty and bleak, but none of the other films really hold a candle to the first two. It really is a shame they didn't make any more movies after this. Even James Cameron doesn't agree with the choices made for Alien3. The movie unfortunately had a lot of studio medelling and the end result is very frustrating. There's a cut that was released with the Alien quadrilogy called the assembly cut. It is a pieced together version of the movie that the director originally wanted. It's not a complete movie but it's mostly there. Bottom line is you're probably not going to enjoy choices the director made for the movie any version you watch.

    The Company in this universe is notorious for playing very dirty indeed, with human lives being relegated to acceptable losses on a spreadsheet, provided their goals are met. The insurance agents/investigators who grilled Ripley were motivated by their paychecks to avoid any and all liability, while blaming losses on Ripley, whom they branded as a kook. The real crime is, that the Company represents virtually ALL legal employment, so if you don't work for them, you have to go full criminal or starve.

    One of the best sci-fi duopolies ever made. The other being the two movie Terminator franchise. I'm so glad that Hollywood exercised a measure of control and never made any more sequels. Yep, no more Alien movies whatsoever. 👍 😎
    Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Jenette Goldstein.
    Historical Fact: Al Matthews, who plays a Marine sergeant in this film, was in real life the first black Marine to be promoted to the rank of sergeant in the field during service in Vietnam.
    Gun Enthusiast Fact: James Cameron personally designed the M-41A pulse rifle. He based it on the WW2 Thompson sub-machine gun. The pistol used by Colonial Marines is a Heckler and Koch VP70.
    Movie Magic Fact: The full-size queen puppet was actually too big to fit into the elevator. For the shot where she is seen there, her tail was removed, and yet the back of the elevator still had to be opened to accommodate the prop; smoke effects, dark lighting, and a black curtain at the back obscure this.
    Cute Kid Fact: When filming the scene with Newt in the duct, Carrie Henn kept deliberately blowing her scene so she could slide down the vent, which she later called a slide three stories tall. James Cameron finally dissuaded her by saying that if she completed the shot, she could play on it as much as she wanted. She did and he kept his promise.
