Fixing Loose and Flaky paint on Chevy Silverado

  • In this video we fix the loose and flaky paint on a 2007 Chevy duramax. GM has had a bad problem with their paint flaking off their vehicles. Especially the white ones. Now their is no way to fully fix this problem other than to paint the entire pickup. Which is definitely not an option for most people because that can get pretty expensive and usually not worth it.

      That e-coat is just as shinny as the clear. I know that has something to do with poor adhesion.

      Sad, my 07 Classic work truck, has been a great "Running" truck. The paint job from the factory, is down right embarrassing! Being somewhat of a detail nut, I would spend hours waxing the entire rig. Including under the hood, door jams, pulling tail lights etc, to get as much protection as I could. Makes for easier upkeep.
      It started on the roof 1st. Peeling off in small sheets exposing primer, which eventually came off aswell. No adhesion to the metal. You know the drill.
      My question??? Why was there no recall on this problem?

    Yep!... The obsolescence and the bane of the GM self-peeling white paint... My situation is similar however the curious thing is that the paint on the utility bed hasn't suffered the same fate as it was applied by the bed manufacturer... So I think in the meantime I'll just get some black and brown primer and spray the peeling areas... When anybody asks I'll just tell them that I have the "bovine" special addition and whenever any paint peels appear in the future I'll just spray paint them... Perhaps if enough of us do this it will ruin the resale value for GM in the future and stunt new sales until they address the problem... At least people will then know it's a problem!... This is happening on a 1999 Chevy Chassis Cab (Work Truck)...

      My 2014 GMC is flaking, too. An auto body tech suggested to me that the primer was too smooth. I know enough about auto body and painting to be dangerous, but it sounds plausible to me.
      In any event, between the metallurgy and arid conditions here in Colorado the body panels aren’t rusting. The truck runs great, I like the interior, and my hunting rig of a truck is going to get hailed on anyhow.

    But it's a good diy, get out the air compressor blow off weak edges and then sander feather the edges. Then use spray max 2x epoxy primer, base color, spray max 2x epoxy clear coat. Comes in spray cans or pints for spray gun.
    I've done this on several gm cars suburban, yukon, sierra, camaro.
    People harp on gmc chevy for it's bad paint. But it's not as hard a job as think, And save you thousands if diy it. If isn't perfect who cares its old cars .

    Does anyone know why GM and Chevy white paint has been so screwed up for so many years? Is it the primer? Did they plan for it to come off so you'd buy a new vehicle? I had a 1992 GMC pickup and a 2004 GMC Savannah van, both were white and the paint came off both of them. My guess is the primer was never scuffed up or was made to be slick so the paint would fall off. Signed, pissed off because GMC and Chevy do not put off a decent paint product

    • @WeberAuto23
      @WeberAuto23  2 роки тому +1

      @Rikki G I think they tried to rely on a chemical adhesion with the paint and primer that way they didn’t have to spend more time and money having the primer sanded. Didn’t work too well for them but you’re probably right about people just coming back and buying a new pickup when it happened. My dad said they had the same problem back to ‘88 when they came out with the new body style after the square body’s, and someone at the paint shop we get our paint from said they never fixed it until 2014.

I assumed that the truck was exposed to a chemical. Now after watching this and reading comments, I’m thinking that it’s just a poor primer.
      Outside of the paint, the truck is mechanically great and rides really well. The exposed metal isn’t rusting, so metallurgy has improved over the years. I tend to run my vehicles for long periods, and my truck is outside in the rain, snow and hail, so I’ll just put up with it, but man, it looks nasty.
