    2015 was just... weird. *No one* (and don't lie) remembers that when Hamilton won the title, it was over Vettel. Rosberg only re-took second with his trio of wins to the end. Truly a testament to how forgotten that season is.

    Willem Toet mentioned in a recent Driver61 video that the reason Bennetton's German GP inferno occured was not because of the fuel filter being removed. He explained that the parts they got from the manufacturer happened to be on the tighter end of the tolerance limits, causing the seal to not engage if even a small foreign object had found its way into the neck flange. If this was a few days, or years after the fact I would still be skeptical, but we are talking about an event that took place 30 years ago, to a team that no longer exists and from a person that is no longer a part of its current guise. It really puts into perspective how easily a suspicion of cheating can trickle into a media frenzy and escalate to a narrative that gets reproduced thousands of times, yet has no basis on truth.

    Yeah, I hated the tire pressure controversies, because no sanctioning body says what temperature the tires should be at. And, pressure varies so widely by temperature. IMSA did a number of tire pressure infractions last year, and it was because the weather at one race dropped 20 degrees F during the race. The tire pressures were fine at the beginning of the race, and the 5 minutes before the pit stop, but 5 degrees cooler air temps and slow speed in the pit, the pressures were as now under-inflated by fractions of a PSI. Well, there was the Meyer Shank Racing tire pressure controversies too, but that was something else entirely.

    It still feels too F2/spec series to only see 1 tyre manufacturer. I know im old, but there is so much more to a race when you have another element to tyres other than just compound choice. Yeah yeah, i know, i know, the Indy 05 tyre fiasco, but it is sad that only Pirelli is there. That said the consumer market does get better products via the technical trickle down....

    • @l_poci_
      @l_poci_ Місяць тому +2

      Thing is, with a tyre war, you can get scenarios, where one manufacturer can make tyres much better than the other, or one messing up. This in case could derail, potentially, half the teams. It doesn’t matter how good a car they make, when the tyres are simply not on par with your opponent. 2003 after the summer break after Michelin changed their tyres is evidence for this. Plus, controlling tyre manufacturers from going “too far” in a tyre war is basically impossible. Now wether pirelli is the best choice, is arguable, however having a tyre war, “2000s style”, is basically a 2D solution to a potentially non existing 3D problem.

    • @robbyk5266
      @robbyk5266 Місяць тому

      @@l_poci_ thing is I completely disagree with your tunnel vision view. One tyre to rule them all is akin, to me, as saying there should only be 1 engine manufacturer. I have been watching F1 since the 90s, so yeah I am well aware of the 2000s. HOWEVER the FIA grooving the tyres and limiting grip is what killed the tyre war AND tyre technology has evolved immensely over the last 2 decades. More importantly you'd have teams working directly with the manufacturer to match their best tyres to the car's set up. BUTT, let us not forget that Pirelli PAYS to be the official tye of F1 thats roughly $16 million per seasom in tyres alone.

    • @l_poci_
      @l_poci_ Місяць тому

      @@robbyk5266 while you make good points, you did not address any of my counter arguments. The fact that if one company falls behind the other, and can hurt almost half the grid, if not more, is very possible, no matter if the tyres are grooved or slicks. Thats not “tunel vision”, thats literally what happened then and what can very well happen again. Also in the era of cost caps, having a team have a relationship like ferrari had with bridgestone can mitigate all that. The counter arguments overshadow the pros, this isnt just my opinion. Plenty of experts think so. Engines being the same is not equivalent at all, because engines are made by teams, tyres are made by external manufacturers. The point of the cost cap nowadays is to try to prevent long term domination, and considering how red bull are performing this year, its working. If teams start having exclusive partnerships on tyres, they can get access to an advantage not open to other teams. You think sauber or haas will have the bargaining power of ferrari or Mercedes in getting tyre partnerships? It will throw away this current state where basically all teams can fight for points. The 2000s was an iconic era, however in terms of fairness within teams, it was a mess. Max mosley was running around, trying to hold back manufacturers from spending more and more money, smaller teams were being squashed year in year out.

    • @l_poci_
      @l_poci_ Місяць тому

      @@robbyk5266 also a tyre war may work in a refuelling era where 2-3 stops are common. However add another tyre manufacturer to the grid now, have them battle out who can make the best tyres, and you will have another 2010 situation where all races are 1 stops and a drivers can pit on lap 2, and finish the race easily. It will kill multi stop strategies unless the fia controls the performance and longevity of the tyres, and doing that with 2 brands is a lot more difficult than 1. Like i said, wether pirelli is the right choice is questionable, however tyres are not a problem now, and it will simply create problems if they are disrupted again. But this debate is moot, a tyre war isnt happening, the fia learned it the hard way in the 2000s. The plans for the future are in a different direction.

    Interesting side note, the following race in Singapore Mercedes were absolutely nowhere, qualifying 5th and 6th (their lowest of the entire season) and Rosberg coming in fourth.
    There was some speculation at the time that Mercedes had deliberately thrown the weekend as a plea bargain (so to speak) for what happened in Monza. Obviously this probably never happened, but given that it was the only weekend in the entire season they struggled and that it came directly after a controversial race, it does seem suspicious at first glance.
    Then again, Red Bull showed last season that Singapore can be just a dodgy track no matter how brilliant your car is, so it maybe is just people looking for a controversy wherever they can
