Oh yeah and someone else has probably already said it but if you're curious: Tunnbröd (the cracker / thin bread) comes in two varieties, a fresh soft fluffy but thin variant and a dried up harder cracker version. Not sure if they're the same and just dried or not, but thought you should know.
Somehow the original video you referenced ended up on my recommended videos like 4 or 5 years ago. It was captivating. And, like you, I kept getting caught up on how many times he kept saying “it’s not that bad” However, here is the kicker. So I was reading the comments and it turns out that dude is a math teacher in Sweden and one of his actual students randomly found his video and commented. Then they spoke in Swedish and yup, student and teacher reunited by UA-cam comments of all things! How cool is that? Honestly if you haven’t read the comments under the original video, please do! I was really looking forward to watching your video all day because I saw that you’d be posting it while I was at work. What a great end to a good day. I like that you gave it a good honest try. I’ve always wanted to try it but I live in an apartment and don’t have a back yard so I can’t. But I think you and your girlfriend’s reactions were much more genuine than people who just want to make that fish seem super weird and over the top. Thank you so much for this video :)
You are supposed to have sour cream on it. Also there are a soft version witch for me is the “real” tunnbröd. Otherwise you did very good, thank you for honestly trying it almost as we do it here in the northern Sweden (I don’t like it though).
This is one of the only surstromming taste tests that made me want to try it too, lmao. You all made it look super fun! Also way to just whip up your own flatbread, looked bussin.
My ex wife’s family are Egyptian and used to eat salted herring all the time. I know it’s not the same but I loved that stuff with their homemade cheese.
The bread, "tunnbröd" (just means thin bread) comes in two varieties, the hard and the soft one. You can use either kind for surströmmning I suppose, but the soft one wont last as long so it'd be more difficult to ship.
I agree with you about the flavor not being too bad. This video made me realize my can wasn't stored properly, and it was all bulgy. But the fish itself was okay, like musky, fizzy anchovies. But my can had built up gas, and there was a LOT of very stinky gas, and the smell lingered and stuck to everything. Also, that's a good point about it being better not eaten straight out of the can with all that stink right in your face.
Us swedes do not ''wash off'' the fish. We do eat it like a sandwich but we use sourcream not yoghurt, and chives. It is salty because we like salty foods here in the nordics so it's not for everyone. And it's only the canned surströmming who smells.
As a big advocate of anchovies and a variety of fermented fish, this makes me want to give this a shot. My only issue is that my sense of smell is unreasonably sensitive (unable to use most scented soaps because they make me nauseous) so I'd be worried that even opening it underwater would be too much for me. You should try lutefisk some time.
i straight up don't get how people think century eggs are bad. even without soy sauce and sesame oil i can't see how it would have a bad taste or texture
@@Cooljoe55 did you eat it as is? nobody does that. it's just has a specific taste+sourness to it. so it's used in deserts or sour soups. nobody in asia eats it by itself.
@@irregularguy6465 century egg clearly has a sulfur smell to it. once you eat it, it also tastes weird. i'd like to see how many people hate it if they ate it in congee. eating it by itself is too much for a first time.
@@DiamondhandsForever Never on it's own. Just tamarind soda and candy. I just looked it up and saw it's uses, I've probably eaten it without knowing considering it's used in a ton of delicious dishes.
I am not Swedish, but I live half my life in Denmark and I will say the general Scandinavian attitude towards strong flavors like this is to combat it with a strong Snaps like Aquavit.
In Norway we eat fermented fish too. But it doesn't compare to surströmming really. It is the nicer cousin to it. Rakfisk. Usually it is trout fermented for 3 months. It smells rotten too. I have had it a few times and it's not offensive once you get used to the taste.
Century egg doesn't really taste or smell all that weird even eaten plain. I do personally find the 'wet' century eggs kinda unpleasant (there just seem to be some brands that don't ferment them long enough so the yolk is kinda runny) but otherwise, they actually taste really good especially when served as a 'Century Egg Salad' which basically uses a mild, sweet soy sauce based dressing and lots of garlic.
It's the same as surströmming: people eat it the wrong way and overreact, damning it to all hell. If eaten the way it's supposed to actually be eaten, it's still an acquired taste, I'll give you that, but it's quite edible and even quite nice.
I have been watching this channel alot and its addictive! I would like to see you try either Cincy style chili or Ohio valley pizza. Mostly Cincy chili cuz its very decisive to some people for some reason.
Its surprising that it wasn't slimy cloudy fish goop that sprays out of the can like tear gas when opened, like every other video I have EVER seen about this stuff.
@@HonestTries Ooooh I'm intrigued now! What do you think of adding some spicy mustard and dill? And a beer? (My profile is a joke name - I'm a Vietor, lol)

this is the first video ive seen of someone opening this in america and its not just fish paste, i dont think any of them know it needs to be refridgerated
I’ve always been curious about trying these stinky little fish. I grew up eating a lot of different fermented food, but I’d never describe any of it as smelling “rotten”
Funny that the guy who was saying it wasn't that bad was holding it as far away from his body as possible when opening and was in his front lawn so not to stink up the house, I think it is that bad😂
🤣 He opens the can, then forgets that it's open and tips it up to show the camera and the juice spills all over! Truly amazing! Is Cobes in an apartment or house? I feel sorry for his neighbors if it's an apartment. You just know whenever there's an odd smell or issue all his neighbors know the source!
@@HonestTries he is in an apartment, not long after this he was evicted, not sure it was the fish stink or the Cobes stink, but the general stink was part of the eviction reason, apparently the owners were struggling to rent the neighbouring apartments.
I grew up in the area where this stuff is from, but being allergic to fish I was never able to eat it and learn to enjoy it -- I just had to sit by and suffer the smell, haha! One time though, I was counter-protesting a group of neo-nazis in my home town, and as a form of peaceful protest a friend and I opened a couple cans of surströmming. I think foods like this come about from people who have nothing else to eat, so they eat it for survival, then somehow, over the years it becomes known as a "delicacy".
How can people eat this. My cat, who loves fish, i bought this once to try it. He heard me opening up a can hoping it was feeding time. I was going to share but when he came close and git a good whiff, he turned tail like I had just shot mustard up his ass! If my cat wont eat it, neither will I.
