    I do the exact same thing. It is amazing how well they work! It makes the difference in the survival of my tomatoes and peppers.

      Yep, it does make a big difference. I used to hate have a plant cut down that was doing well.

    Here in Northwestern BC Canada I have already planted 75% of my garden, seeds directly into the soil. The ground finished thawing last week, and I started digging. All my bulbs are up. We have not had any rain yet this year, and none expected in the long term forecast. It has not gone below freezing in a couple weeks other than an hour or two of light frost some mornings, and has been 10 to 15 degrees Celsius in the afternoons. I am expecting a VERY early Spring, and a very hot and dry Summer. I live in a small isolated town. Smoke from wildfires will probably block the sunlight for several weeks again this year, and there will be watering restrictions, evacuation alerts/orders, and empty grocery stores. I realize I'm 2 months early with my planting, but I think I'm going to look like a genius in a few weeks, while everybody else in the area is still sitting on their seeds and the hot sun beats down. My only concerns are arctic outflows (can get to 30 below freezing in April here), and Spring hailstorms.

      Sounds like you have a lot to deal with up there. I've gambled with early planting myself a few times. I hope it works out well for you, and none of the bad things happen. I'm hoping for an early warm spring also. Good luck!

      The weather here in New Brunswick has been a mixed bag. Last week, northern NB got 60cm of snow, lesser amounts the further south you go. Then we've had none stop rain and warmth for days, but now it's snowing again. The birds are fair confused!
      My garlic hasn't broken through the mulch yet, so winter's not done with us yet. Six more weeks until the hummingbirds arrive!

    I can finally start my tomatoes this weekend! It's 10 weeks to June 10th.
    We often still get frost into early June, so I don't put tomatoes or peppers in the ground until June 10th. I do up a few in pots late May, but move them into the porch if it will be a chilly night. I started peppers in February, and they are doing well. Even with a heat mat, germination took 2-3 weeks for some varieties. I had almost given up hope for the 'Firecracker Peppers", but after almost a month, 8 seedlings appeared on the same day! All are doing well!
    I hope everyone has good gardening this year!

      It always feels better when you get a few tomatoes and peppers growing. June 10th will be here before you know it.

    Good Morning Jim - Have not really had any issues with cut worms yet that I know of but appreciate your solution. I do use Diatomaceous earth so perhaps that stops a lot of bugs including cut worms. Looks like it will be a while before anything goes outdoors anyway. Hope you have a great weekend..

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  Місяць тому +1

      Good morning! That's great that you don't have a problem with them. That Diatomaceous earth probably does have something to do with it. Hope you have a great weekend! We will be planting before we know it.

    Those little buggars cut a plant off at ground level. I've got my cups on my green beans. My cucumber plants were in grow bags and didn't get chopped down. I get a large bunch of solo type cups from BJ's wholesale club. They last for several years. Happy Easter. 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

      Yep, it can be so frustrating when they get a plant just as it's starting to grow. Glad to hear you reuse your cups. Hope you have a very Happy Easter!

    So cut worms only travel top of the ground?

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  Місяць тому

      There are some subterranean cutworms, but I've never had much trouble with those.
