Maybe cutworms are just chop and drop composters at heart.

As An added bonus, if you use the pvc pipe/tin can (w/ both ends cut off) trick, if you sink the tube several inches, you also foil those other jerks, nematodes. They only live in the top few inches of soil, so you block access to your babies while allowing the roots to grow out the bottom into the relative safety of the nematodeless depths .

I have recently observed that they hate neem oil, when spraying a plant with aphids... They surfaced and died. Now I mix a little neem and bt in a bottle just for them. Grow on!

Physical barriers are the way to go!
I've mentioned before but since it came up again, I always use cylindrical sections of old cottage cheese and yogurt tubs.

I really like to use the tops old 1 gal plastic nursery pots ( pot with bottom half cut off) in with 10” sod staple. Deep mulch right near your plants makes the problem worse. I use the nursery pots and use mulch on same plants. It works for cutworms. I use it particularly young transplants also for the purpose of frost protection, shade, wind protection, etc. in my hella Sandy soil a 3 gal size pinned tightly to the ground also gives me a Nice spot to flood with water right at roots and ensure it soaks right down for a small transplant

I've had some success with short lengths of PVC pipe - should have thought of using cans!

What about spraying the stem of the plant with a sugar solution, then dusting it with silica dust or sand? Perhaps even a pesticide dust?

I had 7 straight 8 cucumber seedlings in a tray outside on a table and one morning I found one of them cut in half with the other cucumbers unharmed. I thought at the time it was a mouse or a mischievous bird. Then last night I found a roach in a tray that I have egg plant coming up. I then figured it was the very same roach 1 month ago, but I've never heard anyone with this problem. Now I see your and it makes a little more sense. I'd never heard of a cutworm before. I'm going to look it up.

Thanks! You rock. I actually hoard the empty rolls for composting, so that will be “easy”. Just time consuming. What jerks those cutworms are.

I've read not to use anaerobic compost directly into the garden. So I did. I just added about 1 or 2 inches worth that I'm going to let get some air for a couple days on top of some very red clay in some new beds that I'm going to work in a bunch of decent potting mix too. Is all hope lost? :)

Another great video David, I was wondering if you can make a video on nitrogen fixing plants and how to improve soil, also, I’m sure you know about this, but you can find a lot of really good fruits and fruit seeds on the tropical fruit forum

There has been a similar question to mine but not quite the same question:
I have a very shady portion of my yard (in zone 9b). At the very most it only gets a couple of hours of early morning sun and maybe a bit of dappled sun at other times. Weeds are abundant, though. Could I use this space to "zone push" and grow some things typically reserved for cooler climates?

I was thinking about growing some mushrooms. How do mushrooms fit it with survival gardening? Would any mushroom be as good as the next as far as nutrient density? I am in a tropical climate.

Just put a line of diatomaceous earth around the plants insects won't go through it, it cuts them up.
