      @@tropicaltrucker4425 well said!!👍👍 i truly wish more people who are interested in owning an exotic pet actually does the research finds out what they're in for what the real requirements of care are Etc this is the number one cause why where I live in the u.s. it is now absolutely 100% not safe to handle or touch any snake that you are not 110% certain of its identity and even then it used to be when I was a kid we used to catch black rats and put them in the basement to deal with the real rats or I catch one and keep it as a pet for the summer I got my oldest son over his fear of snakes the Black rat snakes now terrifyingly enough you hear things like a case that happened several years back in Baltimore where a couple of young boys were playing with a snake they had found didn't know it was well it turned out to be a gaboon pit viper in South Baltimore! It was nothing short of a miracle and probably the snake had been handled before and wasn't truly afraid and skittish around humans so neither child got bitten or even more horrifying I was walking home from work in Glen Burnie Maryland and saw a very bizarre snake zip across the road ahead of me upon getting closer and seeing the snake I guess felt cornered whatever became aggressive and to my literal horror need backing the hell up I recognized it cuz I just watched a show about him at lunch time that night it was a freaking Taipan!! No s*** unfortunately Animal Control was forced to kill the snake because well honestly they simply did not have the experience for the means to safely capture said snake and I know that the lady felt bad but I can't blame her because that snake bit you the nearest Danny Phantom Dade County Florida and ultimately from what I if what I heard was correct that snake was loose because it was an exotic pet that the owner had released it for whatever reason. Now that's a tragedy.

    I just got the chaco golden knee as my first tarantula! I know she isnt as flashy as others you listed, but she is super docile and sweet. loves getting her exercise. I had arachnophobia for 25 years until I held my first tarantula. Now I am in love, and obsessed. Thanks for this video!

    These are all good choices for beginners. I am looking at my first spider soon, and although I would like to be able to handle them, it's not a must have, beauty comes before that. I wouldn't start with one of course, but for me, the king of them all is the T Blondi bird eater. I also like the baboons too, if you're looking for a spider that's just to look at and observe. You can learn a LOT through observing your spider, even if you cannot handle them, you can learn so much from them.
    I remember when I held my first t, she was a stunning G Rosea. This local farm place would get her out for me whenever I went lol. we got to know each other I swear, me and Rosie lol. That's when I got into spiders. Everyone would stand around in shock and awe that I was 'brave' enough to do it lol. I'd sit there on the floor with her on my arm, she'd walk across my back and down my other arm. She had to be the most docile spider ever.
    These videos really help eradicate irrational phobias like Arachnophobia and help stop people killing these creatures. I am the house spider rescuer in my house, husband is scared of them but won't admit it, so how he will cope with one of these guys when I get one I don't know lol.
    Great video, liked and subbed x

    nice. i think #2 should be #1, just bc how often they flick hairs... I've got a crazy obt too, but what's odd is ive got a A. Genic we aptly named Jezebel, that is even crazier.... Lydia, a sister of hers, literally from the same sac, couldn't be more chill (most of the time). Like you said, It's all about personal experience with the individual T.

A lot of people start out with Chilean rose hairs as well but I’ve never really been too interested in them. To this day it’s like watching a horror movie to me when someone handle their bottle blues lol. I’m over here like, “Oohhh don’t you do it! I've been watching videos about spiders for like a week now. And when I started I felt uncomfortable. You know those shivers they give you. But now...only a week after...I don't feel any shivers :DD and I kind of like them C: but I will still be freaked out by those little, scary black spiders like Tegenaria, Phalangium opilio (I know it's not a spider) and all those small spiders you can find at home...these are my nightmare :DDD but spiders like this..I find them cute :3 especially those Peacock spiders :D Great video C:

    I have 5 tarantulas, I dont hold any of them. They are animals to look at and not stress them out. I have very docile tarantulas and a parahybana who's not afraid to jump at the window as you touch her terrarium. She always creeps me out so my boyfriend feeds her. But I love our 8 year old A.Metallica the most. She is super docile, gentle and likes drum and bass 😁 she is very big now with wonderful blue and orange colours. In the evening she takes little walks in her terrarium and I love watching her. 😍😍

    Gramosthola Spathulata was my first. Thanx for metioning it!
    It was extremely docile as long as I didnt provoke it or make sudden moves.
    I saved it from certain death as it was crossing the street in the rush hour.
    It was the first time I actually grabbed a tarantula in my life and it was funny cause I didnt hesitate at all.
    I kept it untill he molted then I released him.
    It was already huge when I took it. The size of my hand - and Im 6 feet tall.

    Avis are great, would've placed them higher.
    They look amazing (especially versicolor nymphs), are rather active, don't hide all day long (usually) and don't require too much work (I guess that's true for most Ts though, compared to other exotic pets)....
    Handling is usually fine too, if you keep in mind that they're as fast as some Araneomorphae and that they can jump VERY far.
    Never seen any Avi going defensive, not even using the hairs.

    I'm surprised to see an arboreal species up on your top 5 list. A lot of them tend to have moods, but what suits your opinion suits it.
    I'm so happy to see a G. Pulchripes on here. I have one and he is the sweetest T I have ever met. scared of earbuds and does the Pulchripes buttwalk, but a sweety nonetheless.

    There are a few more species that I would add as honorable mentions for beginners, Brachypelma albopilosium and Aphonopelma chalcodes are two of the most docile tarantulas and then there is the Lasidora parahybana, not for those that want to handle but for someone that wants a tarantula that is always out in the open.

      I have two albo's, one is hobby form and one is wild form (not to be confused with wild caught) and they are sweethearts. I'd also add Euathlus sp. red, hands down the most docile species I've encountered so far. :)

    Hi!
    I love all your video's, you know a lot about all of your animals. I own a mexican fireleg (Brachypelma Boehmeii). Do you have one of those? Are you getting most of your spiders as slings or as adults?
    Greetings from the Netherlands,

    Sorry i know, old video, but what about the Chilean Rose Hair? Mine just died after about 27 years and I'm looking for another just as or more docile. Probably the Mexican Red Knee. I haven't decided yet.
    Just curious of your thoughts. Great videos by the way!

    I agree with the listing, except I'd put G pulchra at first place, but that could be bias as this is my absolute fav species. Ooh and BTW "but you know, I'm a lil bit tougher than most people" that was cool and fun as heck but I like your reaction, I hate it when people buy a tarantula, feel the need to frequently handle it, then whine and decide to give it away if they get bitten.

    Most any member of Brachypelma, Aphonopelma, or Grammastola genera are pretty docile, some individuals can be hair kickers though. The most docile tarantula I have ever owned was an A. avicularia though.

    Hi I'm thinking of getting a Metallica as a first tarantula. Cuz its the prettiest. Would you recommend this or not. It would be an observational pet? It would be a sling. What do you think??

  • @davidkelly1639
    @davidkelly1639 8 років тому

    Wow.. I was fixing to completely write you off as another idiot with spiders, but you actually picked something for #1 other than a Rose Hair, which while can be very docile can also totally freak out and leave you with multiple dry bites and seems to be what everyone is told to get for their first (and not surprising is what is their first "Oh it bit me" experience too). And while my wife's Rose Hair is very sweet, I prefer my Curly Hair or Red Knee as they are both super chilled T's that have no issue with me reaching into their habitats. And I don't hold any of mine... Ever... Mainly because I'm afraid of spiders. Which is also why I keep them nearby.

    Do you have to hold pet tarantulas? Small house spiders and garden spiders kinda scare me. Tarantulas, being much bigger and not randomly showing up in my bathroom, have always fascinated me. But I do not think I would want to hold it often or for long periods of time. Is it OK to have a tarantula and not handle them often?

    • @MaritaDeLaPenaDTG
      @MaritaDeLaPenaDTG  7 років тому +5

      Absolutely. In fact, they prefer it. It's not a tarantula's first choice to be petted and cuddled by their humans but some species are pretty good sports about it. You should be prepared to at least catch one in a net if they make a break for it but most keepers never touch their T's.

    • @Ginosajisan
      @Ginosajisan 7 років тому +5

      Handling is generally not recommended for tarantulas. Some do handle theirs and to each their own, but no - there's no need to ever handle a tarantula. I've only handled one of mine (consider myself a beginner but have read about and kept tarantulas for a few years now and currently own 15 individuals) because she wouldn't stay in her enclosure once I opened it. She was super docile and just walked right out of her enclosure. They generally sit still or hide though.

    LOL!! : in all honesty pre-homework today "o.b.t." Was my very 1st choice ♥️ it looks so dreamy (I've a thing for orange)
    Question : do you have a suggestion for one that prowls a lot (active) im not interested in holding. Just got worried today when I asked about my 2nd choice and breeder said: "it's like having a pet hole" is there one that would prowl a lot if I made it a really nice habitat in a 30gallon aquarium ? Limbs/and trees?...or are they all mostly just ..."Corner dwellers"?

    Quick Q Marita, in your opinion, do you think T's are capable to bond with owners, and do you think they get used to being handled, or at least become more relaxed the more you handle them (i.e. they get used to the motions of you moving them around)? Thanks :) Great video as always!

    • @MaritaDeLaPenaDTG
      @MaritaDeLaPenaDTG  9 років тому

      +iKd0tP I do not believe they can bond. I believe to a certain point they can recognize people, correlating, size, smell, vibration of voice and other factors we may not know about. They can be trained a bit and that would make them less likely to bite, although I would say if you are going to handle, expect to get bit. They are more a pet for viewing rather than holding:)

    Would also add brachypelma albopilosum to the list of good beginner tarantulas. What they lack in looks they more than make up for in terms of availability, cost and relaxed, predictable attitude.
