There’s a feeling of strange obsolescence yet sheer amazement with landing at Kai Tak.
I left Hong Kong as a resident in 1992 and while my childhood memories of Kai Tak are sweet, Hong Kong has come such a long way since then.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Today’s landing at CLK is clinical by comparison, but the views are still great.

You all should visit again! The scenery today is incredible in a very different way. The route from the airport to the city is breathtaking, jumping from island to island on majestic bridges until a grand view of the city presents itself on the final bridge.

Nowadays, adventure tourists are thrilled by flying into remote airports in ATR or DASH 8 turboprops. But in the eighties and nineties we did our adventures in four-engine wide-bodied jets.

From seeing Tsing Yi without the heavy highway infrastructure to accommodate the Tsing Ma, Ting Kau, and Stonecutter's Bridges, to seeing the rambler channel before the expansion of the container ports, Mei Foo with its harbour-front, and of course the infamous Kowloon Walled City. You were able show so much in such a short video! As a history enthusiast and someone not old enough to have experienced 90's Hong Kong, I just want to say thank you so much!

I flew into Kai Tak in 1992 as well. I remember feeling something was wrong when we appeared to have touched down, but I was so far above the runway; I realized a moment later that I was in business class in the upper deck of a 747, but it had been so many hours (from SFO) in air I forgot. By far, the more memorable side of the plane is starboard; when the pilot pivots the plane on the starboard wing tip to align with the runway, you see buildings seemingly within reach rushing past your window!

Britain was also contemplating simply ignoring the whole 99-year lease and keeping it in perpetuity.
