They should repaint the checkerboard for nostalgic reasons. My first landing at Kai Tak was in 1990 as a young DC8 Captain. Didn't know how much I miss those days till I started watching all those Kai Tak youtube videos.

@@SkaterOrnez I'd bring a paint brush to help - but I'm disabled and live in the UK! It was a very different world the last time a plane flew into Kai Tak. Yours is a lovely idea, however.

Totally agree on the checkerboard repaint idea. I visited it in 2017, very faded. Also a shame that none of the airport has really been retained, only thing left is a piece of taxiway. There's an abandoned 747 at Chek Lap Kok, the local aviation enthusiasts would like to see it saved. I'm sure with dismantling and barging it would be put on display and painted in Cathay Pacific colours with a museum of Kai Tak memorabilia, and, cafe on board.

I visited Hong Kong during July 1996 initially on a Cathay Pacific 747 on the checkerboard approach, it was breathtaking on the approach, then went to China returning a few weeks later on a Dragon Air (can’t remember the aircraft type) during a strong storm. It was quite a scary approach and the passengers were silent. After a few more days in Kowloon I left Kai Tak on another 747. Very fond memories and I hope to return one day. Thanks for sharing your videos. Great post.

Kowloon Tong, a very prestigious residential area northwest of Kowloon City, will likely not sprout skyscrapers in a long time, but Kowloon City (the area immediately next to Kai Tak) and the rest of Kowloon will definitely continue to redevelop taller and taller.

Such a shame the old terminal was short sightedly demolished and not retained as a heritage structure with ships inside so it wasn't doing nothing. I flew in and out of Kai Tak as a kid in 1977, and revisited in 2001, gladly taking video on parts of the runway, apron and terminal buildings.

The first time I experienced Kai Tak was as a child of around 4 years old. My family flew in on a Cathay Pacific flight on which my cousin was one of the flight attendants. Though I don’t remember the details all that clearly, I do remember the sense of nostalgia and wonder I had upon experiencing this airport and arrival.
Cut to almost 25 years later when I visited Hong Kong on a solo trip, I came to the Kai tak site and took a stroll through the area. It was all so serene, beautiful and you could still somehow feel the energy in that place in that it was where some incredible events were experienced. To all those visiting Hong Kong, it is a place that shouldn’t be missed. It’s just an ordinary walk through the park that was built there, but it’s an incredible experience all the same

I'm glad that I managed to visit HK in Nov 2020, as I'm a HK PR.
Part of the original runway (~300m) and markings from runway 31 touchdown zone remain next to the cruise terminal, which is gated. When I was there, the plot of land that also included taxiway A11 and A12 was used to test taxi drivers for the virus, and the gate was open. Right place right time.
Apparently, they kept that plot due to oil contamination. While the North Apron has already been decontaminated and residential buildings already completed, the south is not.
Oh, and in addition, the cruise terminal is still very empty. Shutters down and lights off. Fortunately, you still can go inside

I used to study at a school near the old Kai Tak airport and always hated the rumbling noise from those large jets when they flew over. I was quite happy when the new airport was opened - it was newer, larger & modern. Looking back, Kai Tak is certainly a beautiful memory, especially when we replay footages of those big jets doing the checkboard approach - sometimes in crosswind conditions! I was probably too young to remember taking off and landing at the old Kai Tak airport - probably too young to even look out of the window to see how the checkerboard approach was like from a window seat.

when we lived there . Huge problems with the crowds and squatter owners as workers pulled them down with truck loads of police everywhere and litteraly thousands of displaced cockroaches running every which way .

Kai Tak is not coming back, so I imagine the additional open space for Hong Kong will be very good for building additional housing and extra parks.
I never got to land at Kai Tak. The first time I ever landed at Hong Kong was 2001 (so obviously, Kai Tak had been out of use for years by then). But it’s such an amazing thing to think that it was a major airport and famous for its approaches, not just among the pilot community but the general public.
Glad that people living under the flight path no longer have to suffer aircraft noise though.
The Checkerboard should be repainted and maintained for local landmark and nostalgic reasons. It’s cool.

Now the land become residential area with high-rise luxurious appartments and public housing such as Kai Ching Estate and Tak Long Estate. The remaining land such as the removed airport passenger terminal is still under development. Some areas are assigned for commercial buildings and government offices. A big project called Kai Tak Sports Park is now in progress. It located between the runway and the former passenger terminal. Upon completion, there will be a main stadium, an indoor sports centre and some public sports ground. MTR Kai Tak station, which opened in February 2020, lies at the northwest corner of Kai Tak land(approximately the former passenger terminal location). Tuen Ma Line trains stop at this station.

Think about it. Hong Kongers never wanted a return to China. But China had to take it back. But now they are concentrating on Shanghai and Beijing because they were always Chinese and it saves face to concentrate on them. For China, why plough money into a place and a people who are still rebelling? HK was always going to lose out. Britain didn't want a conflict, they knew they had to give it back.
