also please someone tell me if its actually zino-grey or zin-ogre as i have called it and if its o-grey or ogre as in the monster ogre ?
oriongaming It’s Zen-ogre.
Zinogre is also one of my favorite monsters in the series. It's like an overgrown Manectric.
pretty sure manetric and raikou are based on raiju so it makes sense
I remember naming my Manectric Zinogre after I saw its evolution for the first time, ah good old 3rd GEN times
Possibly Zeorora, and Jolteon too.
It's a kungfu lightning wolf dragon with an awesome theme. What's not to like?
While I do have to nod consensus here, there is a certain thing that's kinda downplayed here.
Zinogre's not just pulling that power from thin air here. Specifically, Zinogre is a host to a symbiotic relationship with Fulgerbugs, which themselves generate electrical charge when agitated. Thus, the conductivity of Zinogre itself helps give them a safe place to nest (shown especially well in the World version of the model, where it's horns and spines are honeycombed to allow the bugs a place to rest) and the zinogre uses the bug's electrical energy to unleash unholy hell on anything it goes after. It'll even use the bugs as projectiles as seen with it's tailswipes.
Back In MH3U I had always thought that Fulgerbugs were at first Thunder bugs that with Zinny's help turn into Fulgerbugs. You are complete correct as to the symbiotic relationship. I had on several accounts taught other hunters that you use a bug net/capture net on his back much like you could uragaan with a pickax to net you some additional mats.
NEEEERRRDDS
That has also made people in-game to give them the moniker "The thunder usurper" since their elemental capabilities technically aren't their own

I remember my first ever Zinogre fight in monster hunter 4U, I remember being caught off guard by him charging up, the crazy grace of his move set, him styling on my unconscious body as my hp hit 0, hiding from him in this crawl space i found as i desperately kited around the map to try for mounts. I LOVE Zinogre. (though he is sadly not my favorite, My favorite monster will always be Dalamadur, I love his design too much as a lover of sneks).
I first found Zinogre in MH3U for 3DS. It's a largely reactionary monster. Zinogre, Barioth, and Nargacuga all helped me master evasion timing in stages!
Yeah man, my first run in was MH3U and I was I digging his design.

Zinogre; like many hunters, is my favourite quarry. The guy just commands respect. Out of respect for the guy the only items I use when hunting him are potions and stamina pills
"No stopping a fully charged Zinogrey" For Lancers that fully charged state just means more counters, near-permanent Offensive Guard (+15% attack), more clutch claw hits, and more slinger opportunities.
hey Gaijin! loved the video! Though I do admit the information on the zinogre was crushingly vague at points. And I also saw one other connection you missed involving another monster. So to take care of both at once, Allow me to start by explaining exactly how Zinogre's electricity works!
Now first thing that should be clear is that Zinogre does not produce its own electricity. While it can control lightning, it can't generate it. Instead, it borrows that electricity from another creature it has a symbiotic relationship with. Thunderbugs. Thunderbugs are those small blue lights Zinogre gathers when it charges, or what make up its orbs of electricity. Thunderbugs are in this relationship because one of Zinogre's favorite foods is a small monster called Gargwa, which is the man predator of the Thunderbug. So entire swarms of these bugs will ally themselves with a Zinogre. In exchange for its protection, the Zinogre can tap into their collective charge to enhance its abilities.
As for the connection you missed? That is how the Zinogre was first introduced. In Monster hunter portable 3rd, a hunter is sent to Yukumo village because a Zinogre, a monster species that has long been ignored by the hunters guild because of its habitat, living high on mountains far away from human settlements, has suddenly moved into the surrounding regions of Yukumo and was disturbing the ecosystem around it. Well, as it turns out upon further study, the reason why this Zinogre ended up there was because it and its herd, pack, or whatever you would call it, was chased from that ancestral home by a monster called Amatus, A dragon with power over storms. So yes, in Zinogres first introduction, A storm appeared that sent it into the path of mankind and made it cause chaos in its wake.
me: sees "Raiju" on screen
also me: (immediately thinks of Raikou) suddenly everything makes sense
...and now may brain went to comparing Raijin to Rajang...
and now I'm picturing a Rajang petting a Zinoger...
and it's adorable
I remember reading about Raiju from a book series. As soon as the words “electric doggo” were heard, I knew *exactly* what creature you were talking about!
what about the fact that the "charge" comes from thunderbugs you can actually harvest off a stunned Zinorge which will dissipate the charge? or did they remove that in Iceborn?
I think they kept it.
no they didnt, its just not very obvious so it's likely he didnt know
@@edgesight No that feature is still in the game.
It's still in the game equip the net in your slinger and it works you also shorten the duration of the charged state
Okay this is incredibly useful information. I have so much trouble with Zinogre on MHGU. Thank you.
'Don't forget the belly button!'
Me: I've already pressed the bell, you twit...
Cover your belly button or thunder yokai will get in there! I first found out about this urban custom in Mushi-Shi.
You HAVE to take a look at Mizutsune from Generations and Generations Ultimate.
It's name literally translates to "Water Kitsune" And Kitsune it very much is. Much like its trickster Yokai inspiration, their combat style is to mess with Hunters by having them slip and slide on soapy mucus. It's face is a direct nod to traditional kitsune masks, and even its armor is meant to look like a Fox Marriage.
When it becomes Soulseer, its soap bubbles can be ghostly blue fireballs, and its scarred, blind eye glows an ominous blue from the water vapor escaping, looking like Hitodama.
nice to learn about the Raijin from you and I especially appreciate the clips you used from Card Captor Sakura I forgot he was even in that show well looks like it is time to rewatch it
I've hunted this monster since it's release. I even have its roar as my ringtone. Love this monster.
In fact the Zinogre's actual premiere was on the 1st of December 2010 with the game Monster Hunter Portable 3rd on the PSP. The reason for this confusion is that MHP3 only ever released in Japan and Korea. The only reason I managed to play it was because I found it online and then managed to get a translation for it. Even some of the buttons are backwards as well but only for the menus, combat buttons stayed the same.
So .... Is Luxray and/or Manetric are based out of Raiju?
Possibly. though I think Raiku is supposed to be inspired by the concept at least, though not so much the design (See the name)
I’d say manetric is more because in the wild of SwSh eletrike is one aggressive pupper
In a comment above someone said something about Raikou as well
Raikou and Manectric are both at least partially based on the raiju. Raikou on the tiger form, Manectric on the wolf form. Meanwhile, Thundurus is based on Raijin, though its Therian forme could also be based on the raiju's dragon depictions.
Roided up version
Even before watching the video I had this on my mind: "IT'S A GODDAMN RAIJU!!!"

I'mma show this to my older brother since he's into Lighting/Thunder using creatures and beings when it comes to mythology and folklore
Oh my god I just realized one of my old OC is raiju themed.... He wears blue and white, commands wolves, and controls lightning. Should I..... should I add something about belly buttons?
This was a shock to learn! Out of all the beasts, I never thought it'd Zinogre with a pretty close connection to yokai!
I was hoping for a video on my favorite Lightning Doggo, and here it is! I love it!
When I heard that pronunciation, I was actually worried that _I_ pronounced it wrong, so thanks for bringing it up, but don't worry, man, everyone has words like that no matter how much the internet may say otherwise.
You know that Zingre gets its electric power from Vulgur bugs not serious lighting
Its scales, horns work like bug nests
I was thinking of commenting something like this but thanks for doing my MH fanboy job for me
It's just a MH explaination for how Zinogre has lightning power. It's basically splitting hairs.
"Fulgur"
Great to finaly learn the background on the best boy of mh and my favorite monster in the series
Right when I was about to ask if these creatures had any relation to Raijin you answered it for me lol. Can't wait for the next video.
One of my good friend's favorite monsters is Zinogre, but if you do Zinogre you OBVIOUSLY MUST cover its rival Mizutsune, no objections I hope! P.s I really hope you can make another Onmiyoji Ep soon.🤗😊
As amazing as this video is, I can't help but think of how this really makes me wanna know what possible origins the Seltas Drone and Queen may have. The Drone is my favorite monster in the series, and the Queen is it's other half, so it'd be great to know any connections. Again though, amazing video as always! I'll be sure to call the Zinogre the "Zeno-Grey" next time I'm turning it into soup with my Mega Dash Juice/Switch Axe combo ^v^
Seltas Queen was designed with a similar objective as the one they had for Bazelgeuse. Bazel is a B-52 Bomber. Seltas Queen [particularly Desert Seltas Queen] was designed as a Main Battle Tank.

oh cool is he finally gona start doing the vast and untapped resources of monster hunter?
Well he did point out in the Odogaron video that most monsters in MonHun aren't based on anything from Japanese folklore. They're usually just bigger versions of real world creatures (daimyo/shogun) or hybrids of real world creatures (Nargacuga, Pukei Pukei, Diablos).
Fun fact, barroth was inspired by a bulldozer.
Now the Zinogres just needs a Raijin like monster riding/commanding it
Good timing with this video GG I just finished my Zinogre armor in MHW Iceborne.
Man, I know you're talking about Monster Hunter, but as soon as the Raiji art popped, I couldn't stop thinking: "Manectric!" This is what I really like from your videos about culture and yokai.
hope you'll do more of these monster hunter mythology vids, even on the ones from the older games, still a fair couple to choose from.
Thanks for also explaining where Ginchiyo Tachibana's lightning-shaped blade in Samurai Warriors comes from! Makes me wonder why Dousetsu's never been unique in the series at all, and why he's only ever seen in the Empires games? Kinda shocking to find that we only ever see his daughter, lol.

Gaijin I can't remember if you did a Kirin origin for monster hunter. or as I call him thunder murder horse.
A Xeno-grey is a grey alien. A Zin-ogre is a monster from monster hunter.
For those wondering about the electricity. Zinogre get the electricity powers from a symbiotic relationship with something known as thunderbugs. Which are the prey to Zinogre's favorite meal. The Gargwa.

Wait so Zagato's personal servant in Magic Knight Rayearth( anime not manga) was a Raijin? Neat.
Damn Yokai are so INTERESTING... It really disappoints me how rare games and anime are that focus around them! It's one reason I love this series, one of the only sources giving me info on various Yokai as a whole.
You make several references to Shinto having intrinsic ties to Yokai... Have you ever thought about doing a video or series dedicated to explaining Shinto? I'd LOVE. To learn more

Amazing as always Gaijin Sensei
Another interesting connection between zinoger and raiju becoming aggressive only during storms. In the game he was introduced in Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, In the story of the game zinogers we native to the highest areas of the misty peaks, but they are driven out of their natural habitat and are sited dangerously close to Yukumo village. The thing that agitated them and drove them out was Amatsu, an elder dragon that is always followed by a hurricane like storm. The blue and white thunder wolves were agitated by a powerful storm.
I love your videos love to learn something new cant wait for more
My favorite Monster Hunter creature finally explained :D
Also it's beautiful to see his animations in MHW being HD versions of the ones in MH4U
Don't know if this count as a reference, but Zinogre's very first appearence was in Monster Hunter Tri G for the PSP,it was exclusive to japan, and that game had more references to japan, like Yukumo Village and the Misty Peaks
I've been with the series since MH Tri on the Wii. Zinogre is a favorite of mine but my thoughts on the monsters have all improved due to Monster Hunter Stories if I'm going to be honest. Having a group of monsters you ride and work with. Made me fall in love with Lagombi as he is the best bun in gaming to me now. Despite it's balancing issues and the final boss being a bit of a pain, I highly suggest giving it a go still because just having them as a pet like having a pokemon before having the Pokemon Refresh or Camp or Amie where you traveled and fought with it, it really makes you take the thoughts of a monster you may not have liked and find them more fun an interesting. I now got respect for every monster in Stories as I went around to find and hatch each of them for my team that I could in the NA version of the game. Riding a Zinogre is so much fun, as is riding just about any monster. :D
But beside that rambling, I've been on a Monster Hunter kick since World first came out on PS4 2 years ago on the 26th of Jan which was a wonderful BDay present for me. :)
All things said, Zinogre's theme is one of the best
Perfect timing... I was just about to start MHW: Iceborne on the PC.
You do such a good job on all your videos keep up Great Work love everything...
My favorite part about Zinogre is how the Fulgurbugs (which helps him summon lightning) use the underside of his horns and spikes as hives.
Something else to note is that in previous games Zinogre was very composed. Not even roaring upon spotting a Hunter, they'd literally roll there neck as like they just accepted a challenge, starting with attacks that seem almost practiced and uniform. But as the fight went on they become more electrified and lose that composure, they begin swelling with anger and they start losing that uniformity. They begin attacking more recklessly and eventually resort to charging themselves up. When even that proves to be not enough to take down the hunter is when they really lose it. All sense of practiced movements and composure are gone, it finally lets out a beastial roar as it falls into a deep feral rage and it's only goal is to kill you.
Dear Gaijin
Thank you for covering the thunder puppy I had loved since 3U. I had met you at Indie pop con 5~ years ago and wanted to ask you if you knew anything about it, but I was honestly to happy to met your IRL. Now with this video, my old question has been answered. However now I wonder if Uragaan or Tesucabra have yokai origins. One being a large t-rex of sorts with bomb rock and shake the very world with his large chin, to the demon looking frog from 4U.
Your fan with the oversized cat plushie.
To answer that question at the end; it feels like a bit of both. It clearly has roots in the Raiju but it's got something really unique about it. It's lightning isn't 100% natural lightning from their lightning organ, rather it comes from its relationship with little bugs called Thunderbugs. Alone they won't cause anything more then a static shock but together they effectively become a living Ball Lightning. Zinogre takes that up to eleven, thousands of those little guys nest within the spikes on it's back and help the Zinogre get it's legendary charge.
There's also two other variations of Zinogre: the Stygian Zinogre Subspecies which has a relationship with a different insect known as Dracophage Bugs which are insects that eat Dragonfell berries. With scales Black and Red Dragon element Lightning it's got a greater resemblance with Hell hounds then Raiju and is a veritable Dragonslayer.
Then there's the ThunderLord Zinogre. A Zinogre Deviant that's in a constant max-charge State thanks to it's abnormally large Thunder Organ. But it can go even farther beyond into an 'ultracharged' state. Where it glows a magnificent gold. The Thunderlord is to Raijin what Regular Zinogre is to Raiju. It's able to go toe to toe with Elder dragons, veritable gods, and live.
I can't believe you touched up on Monster Hunters!!! Yes!!! I hope you do another Yokai watchers on the creatures of Monster hunters. Like Amatsumatsuchi!
love this yokai. such a badass and intense beast. also so glad you mentioned the belly button thing last minute.
Okay I'm going to be honest the way GG says Zinogre's name is the same way I've said it without knowing anything about Zinogre when MH3U was released since the series wasn't something I was to fond into, but after watching this video I can finally tell some of my old hunter friends that I wasn't the only one saying it wrong without knowing how to actually pronounce it's name. Also this video made me fall way more in love with Zinogre it's been one of the many monsters that I would want to own irl (plus Zinogre's variations) because I love creatures that are based off folk lore and the elements.
That moment when you pause to comment about Xeno-grey but then unpause to find he corrected him self...
I didn't know about raiju becoming enraged by storms. Suddenly the species' known rivalry with Amatsu makes even more sense.
I'd somehow never really heard of Raiju before, but now I think I have a new favorite yokai. Although I also can't help but picture them breakdancing to style on fools.
Yo I just recently remembered you, nice to see your still active, man.
"Jinouga"
Crap... I haven't heard that name for like 10 years. Back in a day I was playing a fan-translated rom of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd on my PSP. I was completely enthralled by Yukumo village and was really bad at it. Hence why I respected and loved "Jinouga", because he was kicking my ass. Which made a moment when I crafted the whole set of his armor all the sweeter
I was the one who recorded Zinogre’s title on the MHW Fextralife wiki.
Actually the zinogre first appeared in 2010, with the release of Monster Hunter portable 3rd for the PSP
Wow, not only did I learn more of the Raiju, I realize that the Raikiri is very similar to Ryoma's Raijinto in Fire Emblem Fates 5:25. It would be great if you talked about the origin of Takumi's Fujin Yumi.
YOUR TALKING ABOUT MY BOI!!!!!!!
I imagine a post industrial interpretation of the raiju would probably make them a lot more tame and... Well... Useful.
Imagine people taking stray that are starting to get a bit restless out to an arena surrounded by lightning rods to vent their frustrations in what's essentially ritual combat with each other... and this would power a city for a while, and calm the raiju. The sight of them fighting would also draw an interested crowd.
... I feel like I just described Pokemon.
I guess you could call raiju with their speed and aggression they can hit you like a four legged bowl of greased lightning
Recently in my D&D group's Curse of Strahd campaign, one of our players ended up befriending what I think might be a raiju. Earlier in the campaign, our rogue had come across a spyglass which, unbeknownst to the other party members, contained an entity inside it with some control over the weather. In a recent battle, the rogue broke the spyglass, releasing the entity which turned out to be a cat-like lightning creature. While my bard didn't roll high enough on her Arcana roll to determine what exactly it is, she was able to tell that it's chaotic in nature, and either a kind of demon or fey, so out of game, I'm predicting it's a raiju until proven otherwise.
Since I haven't seen any one comment this yet, The only reason that the guild found out about zinogre was when amatsu, a giant dragon capable of creating massive rainstorms on demand, drove the zinogre from their natural dwellings and into areas near villages, specifically yukumo village
First off, great video. Zinogre is one of my favorite monsters in MH, definitely top 3 along with Glavenus and Kushala Daora.
Second, kudos to you for acknowledging the fact you’ve been mispronouncing the name, and have been trying to correct it.
It's worth noting that here in BC, most summers, we have just as much fear of lightning as the pre-industrial Japanese would have. We get major forest fire issues, and lightning storms can spark several hundred fires apiece. Sure, they start small and a lot of them get put out before they amount to anything to worry about, but with hundreds strewn about the province, there's definitely ones that fire fighters aren't getting to in time.
Don't worry about the pronunciation Gaijin!
Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work
がんばれ!
I love the Zinogre in Monster Hunter series. It's a monster I enjoy fighting and is good for Greatsword training.
Just an update on in/spectre, they have a guardian serpent that was worshipped as a rain deity before Japan's modernization
Among many...
wait so in one fable a SAMURAI warrior wielded a SWORD that would be known as LIGHTNING CUTTER...oh my god, I think Thundercats actually references this sword the Thunder cutter shown in the series, except its wielded by a Samurai named Hachiman.
In the show the Thunder cutter is believed to be just as strong and mystical as Lion-O's Sword of Omens, though it's never given a full backstory or if it was confirmed if Hachiman was a descendent of or that world's version of Tachibana Dousetsu, but it's interesting if that show from the 80s actually was trying to reference the same Thunder Cutter used in this fable
I will note here that the Lightning Zinorge has it not its own, it gains it through the Fulgur Bugs that nest on its back. When Zinogre charges, it's attracting or i guess you could say calling Fulgur Bugs to it. Also the lightning orbs it launches at you are a cluster of Fulgur Bugs.
I fell for the Zinogre the moment I saw how powerful it is. It is such a cool beast: charges electricity, goes Super Saiyan 2, moves so fast you can barely catch up, has all mighty attacks that can one shot you, looks and sounds like a wolf god, is respected by all monsters no matter the size. I love the Zinogre
Zinoger collect's thunderbugs to super charge some rest in it's fur but to charge it calls to them and they provide energy for the Zinoger.
there are tsichino(something) in the Kulve Taroth siege cave area and are really rare thought that’s was a cool detail
I would love to see GG do a video one the one to one connection between the Khezu and Mongolia's most feared cryptid, the Death Worm.
