- Taking a short ride to the store right near my house on 10Oct2021 around 7:25pm in NC Foothills. Then suddenly a deer comes out. Hit around 55+MPH riding Indian Chieftain Dark Horse. Thankfully, was able to stay upright. Bike suffered damaged fender (cracked), small dent on fuel tank, broken left signal light, more pending inspection. Rider suffered bruised L wrist, bruised L knee, strained R shoulder and neck pain (whiplash).
As someone who lives in an area with lots of wildlife this is literally the biggest thing I'm worried about riding. You handled it great and it's a good thing your bike is 600+ pounds
I'd say probably 800+ that thing is massive. A sport bike would've been destroyed. I can't believe he stayed on the bike

Most bikes handle a side hit from a deer, even light ones. It's when the front wheel or forks are impacted that you start to have real problems. A bike has a gyroscopic effect and wants to remain straight up.

Man, I feel your pain in my leg now. I hit one at 55mph in the 90's, head hit the headlight and wrapped around. Heard someone moaning, it was me ..blacked out for 3-4 seconds. Miraculously, stayed upright and on the road with the V-twin lugging along in 5th gear lol. Hopped away with only a sprained ankle and soft tissue damage. Very glad you're ok and back up and riding!
I suspect that if it wasn't for the crash bar, his leg would be in way worse shape

I want to say thank you for the support and encouragement. I'm still waiting for my bike to be finished at the shop and I will be getting back on it. I ride all year, and I will be posting videos as soon as possible. Stay safe out there. One very important thing to keep in mind, no matter how short your ride is always wear a jacket. This happend about a mile from my house and I was just going to get energy drinks and water after doing yard work. Final estimate was over $7k worth of damage. Thank you all again for the support and for subscribing and commenting.
Excellent handling of that deer strike. Hope you also wear a helmet even if NC doesn`t have a law. You never know when you will need it.

Wow it’s amazing how you managed to stay upright and avoid any fatal injuries to your body. This is honestly my worst fear if I ever ride bikes but you took it like a champ, hope you’ve made a good recovery from the whiplash and bruising cuz I’ve been there too and I definitely feel ur pain brother 😭

I lost a great friend in Marquette Michigan back in the summer of 2001. He was coming home from a 4th of July camping trip and had his wife on the back of his Indian and some deer got spooked and jumped on to the road in front of them. Rather than laying the bike down as he had in the past, he stayed up to protect her. A deer went under the from wheel and the bike flipped. Luckily she landed in soft turf on the side of the road and came through without severe injury, but he flipped with the bike and died instantly. His brother through a memorial on his farm and there must have been 300 people there. I can't tell you how many told me they were his best friend. I still miss him and think of him often. It's selfish I guess, but loosing him taught me that it isn't just the loss of a great friend that is painful, but morning the loss of who I was when I was with him.
I’m always extra alert at dusk and dawn when critters are most active. Man! That hurt just watching this! Great job keeping it together!

This happened to an uncle and his wife years ago. They hit a dear at about the same speeds on a heavy cruise-type bike. They didn't fare so well as it was around a corner and they slid off the road after bouncing off a truck. They both lived but each needed several rounds of surgery and he had to retire as he couldn't walk for long periods of time and his hands had tons of damage. I think my uncle was in the hospital for almost 2-months total.

WOW...GREAT job handling the bike after the collision. Like everyone else, this is something I am always trying to be alert for. Closest thing for me was a turkey flew in front of me, missed it by feet. Glad your OK...bikes can be fixed or replaced. Thanks for posting!

That was damn scary. I lost a good friend over a decade ago. He swerved to miss a deer, and ran off the road and hit a tree and passed away right on the spot. Winter riding. He only rode his Harley. Had no other mode of transportation. Glad you made it without to much damage.

My mom hit a deer about four months ago and dumped her bike at around 65, my step dad was right behind her driving a car, talking to him afterwards he broke down and told me he thought he watched my mom die right in front of him. The worst of it was a torn ACL, but she’s alive. Glad to see you were able to stay upright.

I think the fact that the Indian is such a big, heavy, strong and well built bike along with your riding skills helped. Glad you didn't injure yourself worse, bikes can always be repaired.

@@docindianrider7742 Ha ha, strong bikes those Indians. A dude I know hit a kangaroo on one at 180 KPH, blew the speakers out - cleaned it up on the headstock. Shredded the kangaroo, covered the bike and him in meat and shit. Yeah, luckily he just got some good bruises out of it also. He was surprised he didn't die.

That's really incredible. Great driving, and also a great showing for Indian bikes, to take a hit like that and still be drivable. That was one hell of an impact.

THIS is the reason why I stopped riding after 50 years. Never hit a deer, but came close many times. Even had to lock the brakes and ended up sliding into the middle of a herd one night. Good video! It shows how freakin' quick this really happens.

I have a 1991 HD Ultra-Classic Electra-Drive. I'm in Fayetteville. Dog ran out once and I hit it at around 40mph. I jumped the dog and landed it. Kept it up, went back, dog was dead. I had minor damage, got it fixed, still own the bike. My wife was on the back. She tells me I said hold on and dumped the clutch when I hit (I guess I was treating it like a dirt-bike) but we survived. Glad you made it out of your encounter in one piece.
I've had a couple really close calls like that, but luckily never hit. First when I rode a Vulcan Nomad and recently on my Roadmaster. Kudos to you on keeping control. Good job!
The same thing happened to me last year in Washington state on my Harley Softail. 60 mph, open road, deer came out of the woods, no time to even react. He (150 lb buck) hit the front wheel, wrapped around the left side of bike and broke both my lower leg bones in half, toes touching my knee. I didn't lose control of the bike. I was life flighted out to the nearest trauma center. 8 months later I am almost healed up. The deer didn't make it though, this is the 2nd deer I've killed on the same bike. The bike is almost ready to reassemble and get ready for this year's road trip. I'm glad you made it through your ordeal mostly o.k.

Thanks for posting this man. I had the exact same experience about a year and a half ago and always wanted to know what it really looked like compared to what I remember. Broke my leg but kept it up at about 65mph. I wish YT would let me put up pics in the comments. Totalled the bike but only because of the bolt on parts. Fixed it back up and back on the road. Was in a charity ride once & a deer jumped from the side of the road.he didn’t clear this guy’s bike.his wife was on the back full on hit her like a linebacker knocked her completely off his bike bike landed on him.slid dragging him with it trapped underneath.& the deer just kept going like nothing.he broke bought his legs.she got a full body cast.what made it even worse.was the charity ride was for them.she was recovering from cancer.&he had just been diagnosed.deer are heavily over populated here.cause they limit how many you can hunt here.
You had kept that bike upright, which had thoroughly impressed me. I ride in the west, Utah and Colorado, and we have a bunch of wildlife roaming around out here.
I am glad to see you survived that! II have been riding motorcycles in North Central Penna for many years and It did not take me long to just not ride at dusk or at night. Too many close calls before I made that decision. I have at one time when I used to work as a 3rd shift field service engineer and had to drive to multiple sites during the night. I got a device that sent out a sound that was at a certain frequency that would alert deer hundreds of feet in front of me. It worked very well. I see that Amazon sells something that my interest you. Same one as I had on my car

I agree...... after decades of riding I also totally avoid night riding. I'm never out & about that early in the morning to have to worry about riding at dawn. lol
My last deer strike was at noon on a sunny day, with a level open road in both directions. Sucker was eyeballing the vehicle -- a convertible -- from the shoulder for hundreds of yards. Noting that fixation, I pulled into the far lane and slowed way down (there was no other traffic in either direction for miles). Perfect opportunity for a headlong charge into the right front of the car and do a back flip over my head. Pulled off the road to inspect the damage and the animal. No perp, but the headlight and surrounding moulding was trashed . . .
100% effective at repelling elephants and zebras. Also hippopotami.
Same here, I try to avoid back roads at night if possible, too many close calls. I do ride quite a bit at night but I mostly stay on the interstates and well traveled roads. It can still happen on the highways, but not nearly as much as the back roads at night here in rural Maryland.

Hit & killed what turned out to be 8 pt buck in Sept of 1989 on my way to work. Destroyed my ‘84 Electraglide & left me laying unconscious in the road. My former Hunter Safety instructor also on his way to work turned around to come back against the flow of traffic to guard me until the ambulance arrived. Spent 2 days in intensive care & 9 weeks off from work w/ most of my left ribs, clavical, & scapula broken. You were very fortunate sir.

There’s actually a video of a guy hitting one getting knocked off his bike standing up and Whah for a second from adrenaline. In his case the deer cleared the bike but not him
You are lucky. That happened to a friend of mine right in front of me and snapped his leg in half. Luckily he did not go down but when he came to a stop he put his foot down, his leg collapsed and the bike fell on him. It was one crazy night. He is well now and still rides.
You and your bike are pretty tuff! Thought that would’ve put you two on the hard stuff. As vigil we may be spooky beasts pop-out of nowhere being true for metal or flesh. Stay safe biker family, be armored be alert!

I had a similar experience in July 2020 in rural S. Alberta ... I was delayed and rode the last hour in darkness. Not what I'd planned. Deer at side of road bolted out and ran right into the side of my Yamaha Roadstar. Miraculously, I was able to keep the bike upright, but the Deer took out my l. turn signal & road lamp, and ripped the wiring out. Cost about $ 1,000 to get fixed. Moral of the story ... it's risky riding at night in rural areas
I hit a deer in Ontario in June 2021. It didn't end well for the deer, the bike, or myself. I spent a while recovering, bought a new bike and will ride again in 2022. Deer on the road at dusk is a serious risk that must always be considered.
Good job keeping it upright. Best advice I got when learning how to ride "Assume everything and everyone is trying to kill you."

You handled that really well, staying upright and on course. Like others who commented, I always worry about deer strikes... especially since here, in upstate New York, I've hit two deer with my car in the past twenty years. It has only been dumb luck that it hasn't been on my bike... so far. Videos like this help everyone to remind them that it can happen anytime, and to be careful and on the lookout, and to wear the proper gear in case the deer brings you down.

They give very little notice.. like squirrels they just GO.

As someone who's rode for over 2 decades I'm a firm believer in loud pipes saves lives(obviously not 100% of the time but anything you do to make yourself more visible or being heard might just do the trick. ) get some pipes on that puppy and that wildlife will go running long before you can see them.
Buddy of mine did the same thing on his new street glide a handful of years ago though he ended up dropping the bike, also in NC. Luckily he didn't get too messed up, just his thumb jammed real good. He said the worst part was he just finished collecting money from doing a big job for someone so he had 5k in his pocket... which ended up all over the road. Think they estimated 12k damage to the bike.

This is exactly what happened to me in July last year, unfortunately I was not so lucky and had to have my knee reconstructed as the tibia shot up through my knee cap and exited the top of my knee. Glad you came through that ok.

I've hit two on a bike. One on the hardtop, and one on dirt. The one on the road swung around just like yours did and broke my ankle. Leathers and helmet saved my butt that time. Both times the impact was hard enough that there was no staying on the bike. Nice riding...
The exact same thing happened to me, except I went down. Count your blessing. The deer struck me full flight on the side of my front wheel. I had to endure a 3 hour shoulder surgery and rehab. Totaled the bike.

Oh man. My Deer strike nearly crippled me for life. I was damn lucky to get away with a broken leg and ankle.

Met a guy in upstate NY who cut a deer in half on his Harley. He woke up in hospital with a plate in his head. You sir handled that like a pro.

Glad that's all you sustained mate. Many years ago I took my first long ride on my then ZZR600 - about 400kms to my parent's place. In the last 1km entering town, a kangaroo jumped across the front of me from the left and somehow his tail struck my right leg - not hard enough to cause bruising. Could have been much worse! Damn, you got lucky. Back in 2008 I had a deer run out in front of me on the highway at night....it washed out my front wheel on my V-Strom and low-sided it at 75+ mph. Thank God for a full face helmet and body armor. Walked away with a concussion, separated shoulder, torn cartilage in my knee (from hitting the pavement) and a bruised hip. No road rash. By some miracle I didn't tumble (my legs/lower body actually didn't touch the ground until I almost came to a stop - was sliding on my head/upper shoulders down the highway head-first), although it was very difficult to keep from tumbling as I slowed down while sliding, which averted breaking any bones.
One hell of a job keeping that thing upright and on the road.
I can relate. Heading to work one night on a back country road, a deer came out of the trees. I never saw her until it was too late. I was going about 50 mph when she ran into me. Luckily, she hit me and I didn't hit her. That's about 125 lbs. running into around 900 lbs. instead of 900 hitting 125 at 50 mph. Her head hit the gas tank and her body ended up hitting my right leg. Also, luckily, the impact pushed me into the ditch on the left side of the road and I laid the bike up on the embankment. It cost me a windshield, rear view mirror, and a kickstand, as well as a sore right leg. BTW, I borrowed the phone of the people who owned the property where it happened (no cell service out there). I called my wife and she brought the trailer so I could load it up, and went on to work that night.
Another time, I had a very close call. I was traveling about 60 mph and a freakin TURKEY glided across the road, just under head high, and it missed hitting my windshield by inches. If I had hit that big bird, I feel sure it would have broken my windshield and I would have ended up with a face full of Plexiglas and turkey. A massive crash would have been inevitable.

I once hit one broadside with my road king...at 70 on the freeeway! I went over the handlebars and tumbled like a rag doll. You got off pretty easy. Nice work keeping bike up!
