Even if You lived in Japan for a long time, he would not know that the first emperor of Japan was a descendant of the royal family of Baekje, one of the countries on the Korean Peninsula, because it is taboo in Japan. As someone who studies East Asian history, I would like to briefly explain the relationship between Japan and Korea. Japan was a blessed island nation that accepted many cultures from China (mainly the Tang Dynasty) and the Korean Peninsula (mainly Baekje and Gaya) and was not invaded by continental powers.Even the only Mongol invasion failed by storm ("kamikaze" as the Japanese call it).Historically, Korea people fought many great wars in which hundreds of thousands or millions of troops invaded, but the targets were northern people groups such as the Sui, Tang, Khitan, Qing, and Mongols, and were generally friendly to the Chinese dynasties of Ming etc... Since ancient times, the civilized countries of East Asia were China and the Korean Peninsula, and the only Asians who could make porcelain, an ancient semiconductor, were the Chinese, Koreans. Since China has been conquered by foreign peoples for over 3,000 years, it is unclear how much of China's history is Chinese, but the Han, part of Song , and Ming dynasties can be clearly seen as Chinese history. Japan's a bit more complicated, although there have been hundreds of small raids along the eastern seaboard by Japanese pirates called Waku. Although Japan received advanced civilization from the Korean Peninsula and China, Japan was an isolated island that had not been exposed to continental civilization until the 1400s, and when Portugal and Spain opened their ports, it was able to absorb Western civilization and awaken, and using that power, it invaded the Korean Peninsula, which had been a leading country for generations, and even dreamed of conquering China and IndiaThe background of this great war(Imjin War, Seven years War , The Bunroku Keicho War) that took place in 1592 is that the carelessness and arrogance of Joseon (Korea), which enjoyed only peace and culture for 200 years, treated Yamato (Japan) as a barbaric pirate group rather than a country. However, Yamato had a high level of tactics through clan battles for 100 years, and the 170,000 troops of Toyotomi, who unified the whole country, armed with Portuguese matchlocks and attacked Joseon.Historically, Japan has waged a surprise war without a declaration of war.The 16,000 Elite heavy cavalry that Joseon was proud of, which had suppressed the cruel northern peoples, was defeated by the Yamato Matchlock unit, and 70, 000 Joseon Main Forces was pushed back all the way to Pyongyang. Yamato, which was a medieval feudal lord era, gained land and people if it won a war, but in Joseon, which was a centralized country, the king fled to the north, but the people and monks formed a militia and fought to the end , the Japanese army was embarrassed by the existence of the Militia.Admiral Yi Sun-sin of Joseon defeated the Japanese navy by winning all 33 naval battles despite overwhelming odds. The basic weapons of the Joseon army were bows, spears, and swords, as well as gunpowder bombs and various cannons of different sizes..The Ming Dynasty (China) sent reinforcements to help Joseon, but instead harassed Joseon by plundering and engaging in internal communication with Japan, but helped Yi Sun sin in the final naval battle.Yamato, who did not have the technology to make pottery, Taken in hundreds of Joseon pottery craftsmen to make pottery and exported the pottery to Europe, where it received favorable reviews. This Great war lasted for seven years and ended with Toyotomi's death.A quarter of Koreans were sacrificed in this terrible war, and in Japan, there is a grave of ears and nose, a Korean civilian, as a record of the war. This Great War was a symbolic event in which the international status of the Korean Peninsula with 4,800 years of history was reversed by the Japanese archipelago with 1,800 years of history. Two years after the end of the Imjin War, the famous Battle of Sekihara, which appears in movies, took place in Japan. Joseon was unable to recover from the devastation of this terrible war for 200 years, and was invaded by the Manchus of the Qing Dynasty. It also suffered the humiliation of being brutally ruled for 35 years by Japan, which was armed with Western civilization while maintaining a policy of political strife and isolation..300 years later, Joseon became a reclusive country with a policy of isolation, and Japan defeated the Russian fleet through the strategy of Yi Sun-sin(T tactic, a modification of A cran's wing formation), the great naval admiral of the country it invaded 400 years ago, and later joined the ranks of the great powers.Yi Sun sin's the world's top 3 naval admiral and the turtle ship is an invincible Korean Item in the Age of Empires PC Games

Korea made the history of the ancient Chinese in Chaoxian 朝鮮 (Today Korea territory) into a historical TV series. Brainwashing foreigners. In real history, ancient Korean tradition is a beautiful standard (Hanbok) for pure white clothes and women clothes to show their nipples (Westerners Record history photos). Ancient Korean traditional costumes are pure white (the Korean people have been known as the "White clothes ethnic 白衣民族-history record name" since ancient times), Korean women show their nipples to represent the beauty. So instead of feeling ashamed, these korean women in dew clothes have the feeling of "I'm proud of having a son! I want the world to know!" The meaning of. At that time, when there was no scientific contraceptive measures, the vast majority of Korean women would eventually give birth to a son, so the vast majority of Korean women could finally wear "proud" dew clothes. When the Pope visited South19 Korea, they also set up a "deliberately shirtless" statue to commemorate their tradition! ------------------------------ 1910. Japan has swallowed Korea. The Japanese believe that some of the low -level Korean traditional culture and primitive (women expose their nipples and transport things on their heads) are very primitive and backward. The Japanese banned Korean women from exposing the nipples (the traditional Korean costume. Hanbok). The Korean people strongly resisted. Koreans believe that this is a traditional culture of Korea. They insist on retention. In the Korean capital city. As long as the Japanese see those Korean women who show their nipples, they will give them penalties and slaps. After that, the Korean capital city gradually reduces Korean women's nipples. They cover the nipples with a piece of cloth. (But in the place where there are fewer Japanese soldiers. Korean women still maintain the traditional culture that exposes nipples). Until 1950, Westerners were still taking photos in Korea. Generally, koreans dont think joseon as their golden ages, more like a darkest age of their history due to japanese colonization. Early to mid joseon era achieved many things, but joseon started to crumble after the imjin war, the invasion of japan, having devastating loss on their population and wealth. So koreans consider goguryeo or unified silla as their golden ages. As, goguryeo had the largest territory and had strong armed forces and unified silla was super rich. Goguryeo had managed to survive 700 years defeating millions of armies invading from china, and unified silla had managed to link themselves with the silk road, becoming famous with their golds, ceramics and ginseng.
Korea is a complex, fascinating country that has gone through many iterations over centuries. This particular presentation is nothing but hagiography. The illustrations are nicely done and the photos of ceramics are lovely. However, the stories were so simplified that I learned absolutely nothing. For example, I have no doubt that there are many aspects from those 500 dynastic years that continue to influence contemporary South Korea. But how about some illustrations of these effects in today's S Korea? Or how about the influence of movable type on the rest of the world. Did the idea of movable type arrive in Europe from Korea or was it an independent development in both places? I actually enjoyed the comments section more than the presentation by Untold History. Really? Untold? It wasn't even Korean history 101, it was more like a children's book.
the oldest record of moveable type seems to be from china around 1040 AD. Korea recieved printing and book making technology from China. But during the Goryeo dynasty(918-1392), Korea would changed from woodblock moveable blocks to metal blocks. According to the Internationl Printing Museum, in 1234, a man named Choe Yun-ui was tasked with printing a lengthy Buddhist text that would have taken thousands of wooden blocks to reproduce. Choe found a way around this by creating moveable metal type. The final form of this metal type is practically identical to what Gutenberg created 200 years later but Choe’s method for producing the type is vastly different. Gutenberg produced his letters with a type mold, pouring molten metal into an opening where it would fill a matrix that had been indented into the shape of the letter being cast. The Korean method that Choe envisioned did not use a mold at all. Instead, a character would be carved into a piece of wood and then pressed into a bed of sand, where it could be filled with metal. To expedite the process, multiple characters would be pressed into the sand and connected with thin trenches. The freshly cast type looked a little like a tree when it was pulled out of the sand, each character connected by a metal branch. Once it had cooled, the characters could be broken off their branches and used individually. While the Chinese had come up with the idea of moveable type before the Koreans, it gained more traction in Korea. Korea had a simplified alphabet called Hangul that was about the same size as the Roman alphabet, which made typecasting and typesetting much more feasible. In China there were too many characters for moveable type to be a practical alternative to woodblock printing. While China gets credit for creating the first printed book, the oldest surviving book printed with moveable metal type is a Buddhist text called the Jikji, which was produced in Korea in 1377. The Japanese would go on to steal korean book printing technology during Hideyoshis invasion of korea. Before this, in japan, buddhist monasteries held a monopoly in book printing. The looting of the technology from Korea would help end this monopoly. IT is also noted that the Japanese had difficulties casting the metal so they used wood instead. The development of movable type in Europe might have been an independent development.

@@balloons526 Balloons526, thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. Your description of the contrasting ways of casting type in Europe and Korea was very clear and interesting. I assume the sand was wet and held its shape easily. I love the image of a tree. I had never thought about how Hangul would lend itself to movable type and Chinese characters would not. Seems obvious in hindsight. Again, thanks for the information.

Joseon especially in the latter period, looked down upon or not regarded as important of trade(mecantilism) and technological advancement. However, scholastic acievement especially among the ruling class were encouraged.(Confucianism, philosophy, and ethics) Because of ban on Bhuddism, ancestral worshipping predomimated among the upper class as well as shamanism among the ruled class. Importantly, Korea along with China did not go through so-called feudalism which basically works on strict contracts like knights of England, or samurais of Japan. Dealings between people particularly in the field of economical transactions were not carried out based on strict logical calculations and trust, but heavily relied on personal, subjective and emotional judgements or on hierachical differences. Korean kings regarded themselves as like a father figure and his people as innocent children who the King must protect. All from Confucianism idea. Those countries which are regarded as developed-nation in the present time mostly went through this contract based history along with putting great importance on trade and science. Koreans used to be highly emotional and did things as how they feel. Emotion is more important than any other things. Whereas, westners tend to put rationalism at first. This is one of the reason why K-dramas, and K-pops have been so successful, that is to appeal to emotion, basic human psyche. I last my comment with a thought that success of Korea in various areas is hugely rooted in Confucianism's emphasis on the importance of learning which after the Korean war, fully implemented by president Park Junghee, along with other factors.
16. Slavery in Joseon. Slavery was not widespread during the Three Kingdoms and Unified Silla periods. Slaves/Serfs comprised no more than 10 percent of the population before the Joseon period. The nobi/slavery system was a major institution during the Joseon period and an important part of the economy. The nobi system peaked between the 15th and 17th centuries and then declined in the 18th and 19th centuries. The nobi comprised at least 30 percent of the population between the 15th and 17th centuries. They were much more numerous in the southern half of the country, where their population possibly reached 40 percent, and much less numerous in the northern half of the country, where their status was not hereditary. The nobi population was substantial in the capital, Seoul, where 1729 out of 2374, or 73 percent, were registered as nobi in a hojeok from 1663.
The 'slaves' of the Joseon dynasty were not even slaves. Very few of them were actual slaves by definition. They are referred to as slaves because western scholars most recent comparison would be African slaves in the west. The slaves in Korea were more akin to medieval serfs. They are given land and paid money. They are also taken care of. Many people also signed themselves up to be a 'slave' during economic struggles.
@@balloons526 there is a vast differencies between serfdom (the definition that you write here) in Europe and China vs the real slavery in Joseon. Serfdom is existed in Europe and China, they didn't called it slavery because the obvious reason LMAO. Not to mention the harsh caste system.
The real term for true slave is noye not nobi. I worded my previous comment in an odd way that is creating some misunderstandings. To clarify, I'm comparing Nobi to slavery to the slavery that existed in the west. One example being the slaves in the US. When referring to slave, that might be what most people correlate it to. It is suggested that most Nobi enjoyed more liberty than the slaves of America. These rights made them more akin to serfs. However, true slaves definitely existed within Joseon. They might be certain Nobi owned by certain noble families with long histories and the Royal family. I suspect these are the slaves professor Mark Peterson is referring to when he wrote about unbroken slavery in Korea due to aristocrats from previous kingdoms be assimilating into a newer kingdoms noble caste without much change or damage. Another rectification is that I am not arguing that Joseon did not have slaves; as serfs can also be considered a slave class; I just want to mention the distinctions that suggest certain or many Nobi were more akin to the Serf class of medieval times. Rhee, Young-hoon; Yang, Donghyu (January 2010). "Korean Nobi and American Black Slavery: An Essay in Comparison". Millennial Asia. 1 (1): 5-39. doi:10.1177/097639961000100102 Campbell, Gwyn (23 November 2004). Structure of Slavery in Indian Ocean Africa and Asia. Routledge. p. 154. ISBN 9781135759179. Retrieved 16 February 2017. The serfdom thesis is based largely on the work of the North Korean scholar, Kim Sok-hyong, who divided nobis into 'resident' and 'non-resident' groups. The former lived under the same roof as their masters, for whom they performed domestic and the greater part of agricultural labour. The latter dwelt far from their masters' houses, cultivating land for which they paid rent to their masters, and possessed their own personal property. In reality, their situation was similar to that of tenant farmers. Kim therefore considered 'resident' nobis to be slaves, and 'non-resident' nobis to be serfs. As the latter group were far more numerous, he concluded that serfdom characterized Chosun society. Palais, James B. (1998). Views on Korean social history. Institute for Modern Korean Studies, Yonsei University. p. 50. ISBN 9788971414415. Retrieved 15 February 2017. Another target of his critique is the insistence that slaves (nobi) in Korea, especially in Choson dynasty, were closer to serfs (nongno) than true slaves (noye) in Europe and America, enjoying more freedom and independence than what a slave would normally be allowed.

Calligraphy was not invented by chinese, but by DongYi people which ruled Shang Dynasty. DongYi people invented the calligraphy or Classical Korean writing. DongYi is old name for Korean people. Joseon is hardly remembered as a golden age, most people view it in a negative way because Joseon after the Japanese invasion was pretty… shit. We were the world leaders in unhealthy factionalism, way before democracy even became a thing. Confucian scholars downright worshipped China after their help in the war, which isn’t exactly seen kindly in today’s nationalistic and anti-Chinese agenda. Their idiotic diplomacy and the failure to adapt to the changing modern world towards the last of their existence is entrenched in our views.

They did. Joseon aided the Ming dynasty in its invasion of the Later-Jin. Joseon also invaded the Jurchens to gain the modern Korean borders by gaining hamgyong province. Joseon also drafted plans to invade the Ming and Qing dynasties. These plans would never see the light of day due to certain events. In the ancient Korea (Chaoxian朝鮮 -Real historical name, Chinese territory and the Chinese regio before 1910). In 918-1910. No, Silla is known as the Korea's greatest empire. Koreans call silla as millennialism silla!
Thanks for sharing! What do you think it was about the Silla empire that made it so great? And why do Koreans call it millennialism silla? 🤔
I as a Korean that Goguryeo was Korea's greatest empire. We managed to defeat two Chinese imperial dynasties, helping to bring the Sui dynasty to ruin and humiliating tang taizong. Goguryeo was Korea at its greatest territorial and military extent.
I think goryeo( where Corea/Korea coming from, or previously called goguryeo)was the greater dynasty in the history of Korea.

I love KDrama, and I am fascinated by Korean history. Hello from Australia. I would love to visit South Korea,
Even if You lived in Japan for a long time, he would not know that the first emperor of Japan was a descendant of the royal family of Baekje, one of the countries on the Korean Peninsula, because it is taboo in Japan.
The Chinese -character tomb brick unearthed from the tomb of Baekje King has the word 「造此是建業人也. Create this is a Jianye people」. It is confirmed that this craftsman comes from the Chinese in Jiangsu Province, China.
* "Jianye 建業 " is the ancient name of Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province.China. 中國江穌省南京市-建業
It is impossible for Baekje 百濟 to say that Japanese people are established in Japanese language. Of course, it is impossible to be established by Koreans.
Baekje was established by the Chinese on the Peninsula (today korea). Some of them are Chinese and their descendants who move to Japan from China. (Perhaps a small number of Japanese follow the Chinese to go to the Peninsula.)
Goguryeo, Baekje, SILLA , Goryeo, Joseon.... thier royal family and nobles are fluent Chinese official languages and Chinese dialects (like Taiwan and Hong Kong today). They have a deep understanding of Chinese characters. Using classical Chinese (grammar in Chinese language).
* Because the grammar of Chinese language is completely different from Japan and Korea language. Only those who speak fluent Chinese language and those who have in -depth understanding of Chinese characters can write reasonable classic Chinese articles. (Including historical books in ancient Japan and Korea)
"高Go"(Goguryeo king), "Wang王"(Goryeo king), "Li李"(Joseon king) ... are the surnames of many Han family漢族 in China.
And ancient Koreans did not have surnames and names in history .
Goguryeo 高句麗 ,Baekje百濟, Silla新羅 , Goryeo高麗, Joseon朝鮮 is not the history and cultural relics of Koreans. Their royal and senior personnel are not Koreans. Most of them are members of the northern Chinese (Han peoples 漢人), (Obviously prove this from a lot of historical data and unearthed cultural relics).

Women are only just starting to overcome the disaster that is Korean culture. This male-centric bias is disgusting and, in this day and age, should be more balanced.
I watch korean tv-films one after the other.
All Women use their heads to move everything. This reflects the ancient Korean people and thoughts.
Historically, Korean women's clothes show their nipples (about 11 years old. After they get married and have children), until they are old .(Westerners Record history photos)..
Ancient Korea(Chaoxian 朝鮮 , Real historical name - Chinese territory before 1910) was a very barren area (even the Chinese did not want to develop this place). There were no dyes and dyeing techniques in this place. There was no Chinese silk and Chinese embroidery.
* Chinese Officials (ancient korean king), nobles and other skilled people, they clothes and decorations were made from other cities in ancient China. They are worn by local Chinese people (Only a very few prostitutes and staff working in Chinese palaces can wear these Chinese clothes) . These are 100% not Korean traditional clothes.
Korean historical dramas are 95% fake. A large number of Chinese culture and Chinese historical elements are plagiarized directly.

Real Korean traditional costumes (Hanbok)
In ancient Korea name "朝鮮chaoxian" (one of ancient Chinese city), . "white-clothed ethnic 白衣民族" (Today Korean ancestors) wearing this fully chest exposed Korean dress (hanbok) is an "honor" for many Korean women - because she has a son! If the woman does not have a son or has daughters, she is not eligible to wear this kind of dew suit - only a korean woman who has a son is eligible to show her chest. So this dew suit is the real traditional dress in Korea!
Deliberately shirtless is a Korean tradition (hanbok), even in 2014. When the Pope visited South19 Korea, they also set up a "deliberately shirtless" statue to commemorate their tradition!
------------------------------
A photo of Korean women showing nipples on the street (traditional Korean clothing). In 1970, this kind of Korean traditional culture disappeared completely.
** "white-clothed ethnic 白衣民族" in history = the ancestors of the Korean .

The period of which 'Jikji' was created is Koryeo Dynasty. Joseon Dynasty was established in 1392^^
Generally, koreans dont think joseon as their golden ages, more like a darkest age of their history due to japanese colonization.

It sounds like you would be better served by an audiobook of a scholarly historian than a UA-cam video. The majority of English speaking viewers will be very satisfied with this level of analysis, which is how a channel can thrive, grow and engage with a large audience on UA-cam.

@@balloons526 yeah believe what you want instead of your own scholar LMAO

Campbell, Gwyn (23 November 2004).

It depends on what faction the nobles were a part of. Different factions had different goals and ideals. They often fought and argued over a lot of useless stuff tho.
You forgot to mention that the Joseon Dynasty practice Slavery and a very strict caste system with an isolationist mindset. If you want to see what society is like during the Joseon Dynasty, see North Korea today.
you are so right, I was thinking the same things
What castes were there in Joseon? Were they introduced because of confucianism or were they present earlier too?
Thinking of the Joseon “Renaissance period “,when culture blossomed ,it brought to mind the flourishing of the Korean culture now , (especially in music. )RMs new album is a deeply thoughtful, original retrospection and deserves its place in Korean literary / musical history. Calligraphy was not invented by chinese, but by DongYi people which ruled Shang Dynasty. DongYi people invented the calligraphy or Classical Korean writing. DongYi is old name for Korean people. Term "Chinese character" is stereotyping Asians as Chinese which is form of racism. Much of the current Chinese territory was ruled by Korean, Mongols, and other 56 ethics longer than Chinese themselves. For Chinese to claim others people ethnic history as Chinese is false and lie, as Chinese didn't exist long enough to claim all the different kingdoms that ruled the inner east asia which include the land called China today. Chinophilia must stop. Stealing culture by chinese also lead to terrorism claim by Chinese with other ethic's territory history.

Neither did Koreyo, Gogureyo, Bakje, Sinra, and the old Joseon.
you should read and learn about the history of the three kingdoms G, B, and SILLA, before spreading false information
Goguryo often invaded Chinese empires and smaller Chinese dynasties. Goguryo also invaded Chinese commanderies, invaded Buyeo, Invaded baekje, invaded silla. They also invaded the Khitans, they also invaded the people who lived to the east of them. They also invaded and assimliated neighboring tribes. Baekje invaded goguryo and silla, i think gaya too. Silla invaded goguryo, gaya, baekje. Old joseon invaded Yan.

Joseon = Chaoxian 朝鮮 real history name. Korean history is only 70 years old. Almost all Korean history is fake.
The Korea King( Chaoxian king 朝鮮王) and the nobles of all ages is ancient Chinese.
The ancient Chaoxian kings (korean kings) 朝鮮王 and noble members all said that Chinese official language中國官語 and Han dialects漢族方言. If they speak Korean, they are completely unable to use Chinese characters漢字 and classical Chinese文言文. They can communicate and communicate with the Chinese fluently. Because they are Chinese . All clothes and headdress (including daily necessities and weapons) are from other cities in China. They live in Chinese palaces (Gyeongbok palace景福宮) and nearby Chinese buildings.
They are the same as the Chinese in other cities. From the beginning of birth, they learn Chinese language漢語(with Han dialect漢方言) and Chinese characters漢字. They hate Korean language and use Korean characters(Even the Korean characters were invented by them).
These are clearly recorded in history.
The Chaoxian king official (Korea kings official )of is the same as other Chinese officials. It is necessary to regularly participate in the "Chinese officials exam". The historical records of each Chinese city (including Chaoxian history - Korean history) also need to be reviewed for the Chinese emperor. These history are written to the Chinese people and future generations.
The ancient Chaoxian king (Korean king- Chinese people) and noble members were written to the Chinese emperor. In the letter, they have always called themselves "Chinese中國人& Han family 漢家族".They have always called the Korean Peninsula as "China中國". And they are Chinese in themselves. The area where Chinese people ( king and noble members) lived was called 漢城 (Chinese city). The name was changed to "Seoul 首爾" in 2004.
