Your theories are really cool! And actually, on that note, I was curious to know your thoughts on MXTX's hints about Hua Cheng's family? In the afterword, MXTX talks about how Huahua initially had a 'foreign' (non Han Chinese) mother, and that her initial sketch of him included that he would sing love songs in his language to XL and be really sly about it haha. What do you think about MXTX's decision to cut his parents out? Also, she talks about how he's supposed to be her take on a male 'fox seductress' in the Thai preface, thoughts about that? I’m glad to find your channel. Watched this drama on Netflix and fell in love with it. Would like to buy the book just don’t know where to get or buy it. Love this two characters so much. Thank you for your video.
He really went out of his way to name himself for the sake of a punny pickup line, only to find out in the Banyue arc that Xie Lian once used Hua as a surname. CAN YOU IMAGINE
Hua Cheng heard that and knew they shared one braincell, lmao. The translation I read explained that the Xie in "Xie Lian" and "Hua Xie" (the fake name he used when he was a Yong'an general) is the same character, that can mean "thanks", making the whole name mean "gratitude for a flower", which is really cute in the context of their relationship. However, the translation also clarified that "Xie" in "Hua Xie" could also mean "dying" or "withering", thus the whole name being "withering flower", and there you have MXTX stabbing us every chance she gets :C
This is just my thought, but I feel like the “San” in San Lang (which means three), is specifically chosen to actually represent the number three. This is because Hua Cheng has 3 died times for Xie Lian in total (which is later revealed in the story), and each time, he came back to look over and protect Xie Lian. So I think the “San” in his name stands for the amount of times he has committed himself and his life (by dying and looking after) to love Xie Lian. Which in a sense, is kinda cheeky, since “Lang” can mean husband, and “San Lang” can mean third husband ig. This makes sense because technically, ig you can say that Hua Cheng has been Xie Lian’s lover 3 times. Each time he dies and still loves him is like being Xie Lian’s lover all over again.

like how the ghost bride call pei ming pei lang its definitely the same meaning as 'san lang',like in the novel i think?the ghost bride looks for pei ming,"are you pei lang?or did pei lang made you come here?"
I absolutely love the amount of layers MXTX put into her works, (I'm gonna go deep into spoilers for books 2 and 4 rn) . . . . . . cause I remember someone once told me that San Lang can also be interpreted as Hua cheng being the 3rd version Xie Lian meets, the first one is Hong Hong-er, the second is Wu Ming, and the third is Hua cheng.
Hua Cheng 花城 is short for (为你)花开满城 or make flowers bloom throughout the city (for you). It goes to show HC's devotion and powers for gege. I find full satisfaction in that 😁😁😁
Aside from the Hua Guan Wu Shen pun, it’s also because like Hua Cheng used to get a flower(Hua) everyday for Xie Lian’s statue, and after he died he didn’t continue, and so he thought that the amount of flower he owed Xie Lian must be enough to fill a city(Cheng),
Oooh! this was so interesting!! I wonder if "San" (3) was chosen because this would technically be Xie Lian's 3rd name for Hua Cheng (or, well, the 3rd time Xie Lian asks him for his name) or even his "third life" - Hong Hong-er being the 1st time, Wuming being the 2nd time. I love TGCF theory/analysis videos and I love your energy!
hua cheng's identity is truly all thanks to xie lian💖 i feel that he would have still had the name san lang, imo it was probably the nickname he had as a child or he truly was the third son. well he is literally the third son in the mxtx universe so... lol
That's an interesting meaning and reason form him to want to be called San Lang by Xie Lian. I also thought that maybe he prefers it because it's something exclusive to Xie Lian. No one else calls him San Lang so it's an inside thing and that always feels good to have with someone you like. Of course the husband meaning only makes this better and even more fitting
MXTX is really good at naming characters/weapons/places. Mu Qing - Mu慕means seeking / missing / envious of. Qing 情 means emotion/affection. He just wants to be friend with Xie Lian. Cuo Cuo - cuo 错means mistake/ wrong as he is seen as a mistake by his mother. Yu Jun mountain and Xiang Feng shop. If you put them together it means Yu Jun Xiang Feng 与君相逢 to meet with you. This is the place where Xie Lian and Hua Cheng finally met again after 800 years. Wei Ying - Ying 婴means baby / infant. Lan Zhan - 湛zhan means deep and pure. The list just keeps going. MXTX is truly talented!
@@fliqpygreenbear4454 Shen Qingqiu is quite a poetic name. Qing Qiu 清秋means clear / late autumn. As for the family name Shen, MXTX was going with the name Gu 顾at first but thought there were already too many famous characters named with Gu, so she changed to Shen. Shen Qingqiu is the name give to Shen Jiu when he became the peak lord. Qing 清is the common word in all the other peak lords‘ names - Yue Qingyuan, Shang Qinghua, Liu Qingge. This is a Chinese naming tradition . You can also see it in MDZS - Jin Zixuan, Jin Zixun. Qiu is actually the name of the family that abused Shen Jiu when he was a teen - that’s why Shen Jiu hated this name. As for Luo Binghe. It’s already explained in the donghua/novel, he was found floating on the icy (Bing冰) Luo River (洛川) and He 河 means river.
@@momofish6844 yeah it also got mentioned in svsss donghua that luo binghe adopted mother found binghe on luo river that's why she named him luo binghe which means "ice cold river" no wonder he got cold gaze whenever he's in madness lol
I'm new to this fandom and I'm absolutely deep into it now. And Kictor makes me feel not alone in this fandom. I love you! Providing wholesome content 👌😌
chinese fandom also has a romantic version about huacheng's name - huacheng put a white flower in the temple everyday until he died, then huacheng thought he owed xielian tons of flowers which could fullfill a city, so he named himself Flower(hua) City(cheng).
That's why I love the greatness of language!!! Just like the extra where the ghosts wants Xie Lian to say that Hua Cheng is his husband... I think that must have been amazing in Chinese
ohh i feel like he would use another pun for his name that would hint at their first interaction or the situation they would have met in ig, i feel that he used lang because of the situation they actually met in, i believe he's a sentimental but straightforward guy and i feel like he was definitely trying to give xie lian some clues because he was hardly trying to his identity
I love how much thought goes into all of the names, it adds so much to the story! MXTX really is such an excellent writer and I'm so glad we have people like Ty to give us more context and a better understanding!
I've seen a twitter post too where they wrote that "lang" also means darling? Remember when Xuan Ji called Pei Ming Pei lang? I don't know if it's it really lang or something else but it's what I heard and in the English subtitles that translates too darling or something same as that word. Just a little perspective opinion too! And I'm also curious as to if one of the reason San Lang choose Hua Cheng as his name is because Xie Lian use "Hua Xie" as his alias when he was a general, aside from the literal meaning of "Hua" and I also notice that San Lang seems to already know that Xie Lian is the general and he smiled when XL said he use Hua Xie as his name.
I have an entire essay somewhere about Hua Cheng's various names and what they say about him, but the gist of it is that all of them are given to him by others. The only name he gives himself is San Lang, a term of endearment between lovers. I think that's because he doesn't really have a name at all--the only way he wants to be called is as Xie Lian's husband. He completely defines himself through his love for Xie Lian. It's his entire identity, literally and well as figuratively, as his love for Xie Lian is the one thing that's actually keeping him in the world.
I've read the book online in Russian and I'm completely in love with translation cause the girl who translated it explained all this hidden details which can be missed. She left her notes about local Chinese phrases with the special meaning which can't be translated directly. And she also noticed that this "Third brother" name can be used for "Husband"
It makes so much sense now!!!! I was wondering why San Lang/Hua Cheng told Xie Lian to keep calling him San Lang at the end of episode 12 on the Donghua…so sneaky…
As a Chinese person, I can confirm that in Ancient Chinese, both Lang and Gege can be used to describe male lover/husband. Apart from their literal meaning, it is used so commonly in every book and drama and opera. Also, the name Hua Cheng often get used by fans to extend to the word Hua Kai Man Cheng which means flowers bloom the whole city, which is part of the sentence Wei Ni Hua Kai Man Cheng which means flowers bloom to fill the whole city for you (Xie Lian) and that is his devotion in his name
I just noticed this but out of all of Mxtx semes hua Cheng is the one who can express himself more clearly and not not say wut he doesn’t want to say cause lwj can’t express himself clearly but I’m not sure about luo
Lmao forgot about luo binghe he got shizun syndrome this guy call SQQ "shizun" in only 1 season of donghua more than 150 times imagine how many times he cried and call SQQ "shizun" during entire novel including extras 🗿
I always thought he was called San Lang because he was the third gong that MXTX has written about. Luo Binghe would be the first "son" which is Dage, Lan Wangji would be the second son-- Er Lang-- (He's actually called Lan Er-Gege by WWX at one point which is, when in context, a term of endearment!!), etc. Basically, didn't think too much about it. But hearing what you had to say gave me a new outlook on it, and I very much like it.
I love your theory, and it truly adds a lot to know lang is used to refer to future husband. I have actually a theory for the san part in the name. He says it is because he is the third brother, and I think that also has significance, since this version of Hua Cheng is the "third version" of him. The first was him as a human, then he died. The second was him as a little ghostfire and later wuming, but he "died" again. Hence this is the third "brother" of San Lang to meet XL. Yeah, that's just my theory I came up during reading, thank you for attending to my TED talk...
Alright so now that i finished the video- I wanted to say a few things 1- Love the meaning behind Hua Chengs nickname 2 - I loved all the other names that Hua Cheng and Xie Lian have used. For example the fact that Xie Lian called Him Hong hong when they first met. Which means Red or little red (I think-) i think its cute- Or the time he was Wu ming which means Nameless. Also It's really amazing the relationship between the two because Alot- of people don't mention the fact that Hua Cheng is from Xian Le. I doesn't have a lot of significants but i find it intriguing for some reason aha. No idea what i typed but enjoy ^•^
I don’t remember where, but in the novel Hua Cheng actually once said this about his name: 你为花冠武神,我便姓花;你说红字好,我便着一身红衣;你曾为我执一把红伞,我便一世携一把红伞;欠了你的花该有一座城了,所以我叫花城. And translated in English it would be: You once were “flower crown martial/military god”(花冠武神), so my surname is flower(花/Hua); you said you liked the letter red, so I wear all red; you held a red umbrella for me, so I carry a red umbrella with me for a whole life; I once took a flower from you so it’s time to give you back a city(城/Cheng), this is why my name’s Hua Cheng (花城/flower city). Sorry if the translation in English isn’t really accurate, but I still tried my best. 😅
Also did you know in San Lang, San means three and when they first meet San Lang actually fell down from the third observation deck counting upwards/AKA. the city wall where everyone was looking at the event at.
Oh that's really interesting! I'm leaning so much from reading this book and looking into things from the fandom and it's great! Thanks for sharing this and also linking to Ty's channel so we can learn even more!
I think he would use the same name. Because he want to be his husband and this scene with Xie Lian dressed like a bride is more like perfect complement to this meaning ^^

SO basically your telling that hua cheng choose SanLan cus he wanted to be called "husband"by xie lian in a way!!😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭❤😭❤❤❤❤❤❤❤this is TOO MUCH FOR MY HEART !!😊😍😍😍😍😍☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️
三郎 is literally in Chinese just a name and hearing you guys making all of those assumptions that is actually a special name but it’s totally fine like I still appreciate the video it’s like what is the meaning of Victor in English there’s not much meaning but then like I still really appreciate it and I still really like your videos
MXTX had said that her char's names just happened to be numbered in order, that it wasn't intentional to indicate the chronology of her books. Also, San Lang is similar in sound to Xin Lang, which means 'bridegroom'. As a Mandarin speaker who didn't know abt the book series when I first watched this donghua on Netflix, my first assumption was that HC was referring to their first meeting while also preempting XL addressing him as his husband.
The romantic connotation of this "-lang" suffix became really obvious to me when I related it to the fact that Xuan Ji herself was calling Pei Ming "Pei-lang" , translated "Pei-darling" in english if I remember correctly
Dude I'm dying in cuteness and sweetness- T ^ T Hua Cheng told Xie Lian that he is his only purpose and damn you will never really find someone more sincere than him because man, even his name is directed to Xie Lian. That completed it. Remeber, he also did what Xie Lian told him. I'm talking about the scene on the city wall. Xie Lian's words were, "“If you don't know the meaning to your life, then make me that meaning"... I mean, he really did. Accurately. HAHAHA
I also saw this on reddit explaining where the San comes from "The "San" (三) can be in reference to a lot of things, as MXTX mentioned in an interview. Including the fact that HC is the third love interest. (After Luo Binghe (Bing-ge, as the "eldest brother") and Lan Wangji (Lan Er(二)-gege, as the second).) Another is that he really could have been the third child in his household, and also that he was saved on the third lap by XL during the Heavenly Procession Parade."
This was so good!! I bet Ty could tell us a lot of context details in important scenes that are lost in English translation. I wish you two would do a whole series of them!
This is from an interview with MXTX as well! docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1grcFoVWVdgYZIpneNymA1tAvS7ybSnkFJOkb3R-tzck/mobilebasic Q20. How did the name, Hua Cheng and the address, San Lang come from? MXTX: Only he knows why he's called Hua Cheng. I came up with names by intuition and he didn't tell me why. As for San Lang, the first reason is that he's the third child of his family. Second, he fell off at the third round of the parade during Shang Yuan (also known as, YuanXiao. A Chinese traditional festival on the 15th of the first lunar month every year) worship ritual. And, there's a lot of reasons you can guess. He's the top in my third work, so I called him San Lang intentionally as an Easter egg. But, it's not the main reason. Like why is Lan Wangji called Er-gege and why is Qiu Chi (is the protagonist of MXTX's 4th novel) called Si Shao [Si means fourth, and Shao roughly means Yong Master in Chinese], the reasons all can be explained in each context. I definitely did a deep dive on the potential "other reasons" for why his name is San Lang, but here is the 3 that MXTX gave herself :)
in the book they make it clear that Hua Cheng is an alias that he made up so one of my private theories is either that San Lang is his actual name or that he just likes always knowing it’s Xie Lian when someone calls him San Lang
It's probably a stretch and I definitely could be wrong as I am still reading the books, but I also liked to think that as stated San Lang also references the number 3, that it also could symbolize how Hua Cheng was 'reborn' or 'ascended' three times within the afterlife. (again from what I recall). As the ghostly fire, Wu Ming, and then Hua Cheng or to his past as Hong'er, ghostly fire and then Wu Ming-- something like that! 😄
I always just thought it meant he was the third in the Four Great Calamities, being it in a linear timeline or not. Lol, but I definitely like this reason more
My guess for San lang's 'San'(three) is because that's his third time meeting Xie Lian, sorta... He meets Xie Lian as Hong Er, then as Wu Ming, then finally San Lang. So it's his third alias.
I am really enjoying the full dive into TGCF as a whole your channel and videos go into it really is bringing a lot meaning as I read the manhua. Hopefully I'll be able to order the books some day.
IM BEGGING YOU DONT CLICK READ MORE IF YOU HAVENT FINISHED THE NOVEL Fun fact: did ya’ll know that the 33 heaven official blessings Hua Cheng fought were the ones that tried to kick Xie Lian out of the cultivation mountain (before his 2nd ascension), the other 2 were Wu Ming and Feng Xin (I think that’s their names)
I really should’ve seen this coming behind San Lang’s name. In Thousand Autumns, Yuan Xiuxiu would call Yan Wushi “Yan Lang” as a way of flirting. It’s even explained the novel .-.
despite knowing there wouldn’t be a kiss when they cut to the 50/50 angle because of censorship I still thought maybe there would be so I completely missed reveal of Xie Lian knowing his identity
I was literally thinking about this the other day. I genuinely just thought MXTX called him San Lang in her books because of the order of her books. Binghe is also known as bingge - brother Lan Wangji is often called er-gege - second brother San Lang is third brother... So it's given. Only realized this after reading SVSSS and starting to understand the language a little.
so a few days ago before I saw this I saw somewhere that like san Lang means something like your beloved or something and I remembered the scene where xie lian told san Lang that he knew that hua cheng was his real name. Then hua cheng looks at xie lian, smiles and says “I prefer you call me san Lang” and I thought that was literally so cute because it’s basically xie lian calling hua cheng his beloved. I did not expect Kictor to make a video on this but like I kind of did subconsciously.
Of course there are a lot of assumptions in this video that are totally my perspective and analysis, I have no concrete evidence of anything I say or authority on what MXTX intended - this is just my thoughts for fun! :)
It's been agreed upon by fans that Binghe is Dage, Lan Zhan is 2nd brother, and HC is 3rd bro 🤭🤭 love the analysis!!! And Ty for insights, woooot!!!!!

I absolutely love the amount of layers MXTX put into her works, (I'm gonna go deep into spoilers for books 2 and 4 rn)

cause I remember someone once told me that San Lang can also be interpreted as Hua cheng being the 3rd version Xie Lian meets, the first one is Hong Hong-er, the second is Wu Ming, and the third is Hua cheng.
I thought there’s also one version as the ghost fire
👍Nice. I like your interpretation!
hua cheng's identity is truly all thanks to xie lian💖
i feel that he would have still had the name san lang, imo it was probably the nickname he had as a child or he truly was the third son. well he is literally the third son in the mxtx universe so... lol
Yep yep yep
Hi, how did you get e-ming emoji?

@@sugarxkiss4183 Ohhh thanks
That's an interesting meaning and reason form him to want to be called San Lang by Xie Lian. I also thought that maybe he prefers it because it's something exclusive to Xie Lian. No one else calls him San Lang so it's an inside thing and that always feels good to have with someone you like. Of course the husband meaning only makes this better and even more fitting
The point of the video is why hua cheng choose the name san lang to tell xie lian
You're funny
@@lenisnow4743?
Wait what does Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu names mean?
@@fliqpygreenbear4454
Shen Qingqiu is quite a poetic name.
@@momofish6844 yeah it also got mentioned in svsss donghua that luo binghe adopted mother found binghe on luo river that's why she named him luo binghe which means "ice cold river" no wonder he got cold gaze whenever he's in madness lol

chinese fandom also has a romantic version about huacheng's name - huacheng put a white flower in the temple everyday until he died, then huacheng thought he owed xielian tons of flowers which could fullfill a city, so he named himself Flower(hua) City(cheng).
"And I think that's what makes him a very complex and *human* character" but he's dead.

The older i get into this fandom, the more interesting new things I learn. Just like fine wine 🍷
This fandom is definitely blessed by the MXTX heaven
Omg this is beautiful. Thank you for sharing it
I've read the book online in Russian and I'm completely in love with translation cause the girl who translated it explained all this hidden details which can be missed. She left her notes about local Chinese phrases with the special meaning which can't be translated directly. And she also noticed that this "Third brother" name can be used for "Husband"
It makes so much sense now!!!! I was wondering why San Lang/Hua Cheng told Xie Lian to keep calling him San Lang at the end of episode 12 on the Donghua…so sneaky…
remember in the extras when HC tricked Xie Lian to say "My husband San Lang" hahahhaah XD
I just noticed this but out of all of Mxtx semes hua Cheng is the one who can express himself more clearly and not not say wut he doesn’t want to say cause lwj can’t express himself clearly but I’m not sure about luo
took lwj 13 years to learn that hahahaha
Oh wow, I never knew this stuff, this is so cool! I'm so glad you made this, just makes the story just even better!
Alright so now that i finished the video- I wanted to say a few things
1- Love the meaning behind Hua Chengs nickname
2 - I loved all the other names that Hua Cheng and Xie Lian have used.
And i can't help but think san lang sounds like 'sun leong' in cantonese which means bridegroom.
I don’t remember where, but in the novel Hua Cheng actually once said this about his name:
你为花冠武神,我便姓花;你说红字好,我便着一身红衣;你曾为我执一把红伞,我便一世携一把红伞;欠了你的花该有一座城了,所以我叫花城.
And translated in English it would be:
You once were “flower crown martial/military god”(花冠武神), so my surname is flower(花/Hua); you said you liked the letter red, so I wear all red; you held a red umbrella for me, so I carry a red umbrella with me for a whole life; I once took a flower from you so it’s time to give you back a city(城/Cheng), this is why my name’s Hua Cheng (花城/flower city).
Because he want to be his husband and this scene with Xie Lian dressed like a bride is more like perfect complement to this meaning ^^
whenever i see that you’ve uploaded something i get so excited because you’re the only person that makes tgcf content like this and i find your videos really funny and interesting

三郎 is literally in Chinese just a name and hearing you guys making all of those assumptions that is actually a special name but it’s totally fine like I still appreciate the video it’s like what is the meaning of Victor in English there’s not much meaning but then like I still really appreciate it and I still really like your videos
Spoiler:
三 could refer to the fact that this is the third iteration of him shown to 谢怜
Kictor gracias por la explicación!!! amo tus videos!
Kictor is one of those fans who stop at nothing to show their love for what they support (aka TGCF in this sense)
I truly was screaming when seeing the scene thinking they would kiss but now realizing the Name I- 💃💃💃💃✨💃✨✨✨
You explain so well, I genuinely like your narration. Thank you

Dude I'm dying in cuteness and sweetness- T ^ T
Hua Cheng told Xie Lian that he is his only purpose and damn you will never really find someone more sincere than him because man, even his name is directed to Xie Lian. That completed it.
Remeber, he also did what Xie Lian told him. I'm talking about the scene on the city wall. Xie Lian's words were, "“If you don't know the meaning to your life, then make me that meaning"... I mean, he really did. Accurately. HAHAHA
Thanks for making these videos!! 🙏 Love it
Love this collab!

*THEY WILL ALWAYS HAVE THIS RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN'EM NO MATTER WHAT....CUZ IT'S FATE!!*
i wanna cry, too perfect 🤍❤🤍❤
I also saw this on reddit explaining where the San comes from
"The "San" (三) can be in reference to a lot of things, as MXTX mentioned in an interview.
This is so cool! I also had a theory that San related to him being one of the three Supreme ghosts
Learned so much from the comments section. Thanks everyone.
That clip lives inside my head 😌
That's why I would like a very sexy, charismatic, mischevious actor with sharp features to play Hua Cheng.
He was literally like: "I'm Hua Cheng but you can call me the love of your life bb"
This is from an interview with MXTX as well!

Has anyone here read "dear boy you dropped your integrity"?
Whoa. Thanks for the info haha I was like ahem you are really one sly fox Hua Cheng 💖
in the book they make it clear that Hua Cheng is an alias that he made up so one of my private theories is either that San Lang is his actual name or that he just likes always knowing it’s Xie Lian when someone calls him San Lang
Lol, but I definitely like this reason more
He's flirty, smart, and scared of rejection
I completely agree omg this is so smart and cute!! More people should subscribe to you and see this aaaaa
Bro the fact that he literally was like “who am I? Oh, just your husband, silly goose!” Has me DEAD.
He's the third ghost king to be born, so technically, the third brother.
My guess for San lang's 'San'(three) is because that's his third time meeting Xie Lian, sorta... He meets Xie Lian as Hong Er, then as Wu Ming, then finally San Lang. So it's his third alias.
That's also why Xuanji calls Pei Ming "Pei Lang"
6:50 I seriously thought you were about to say “yeh, but you will call me daddy”
I’ll- I’ll see myself out
I am really enjoying the full dive into TGCF as a whole your channel and videos go into it really is bringing a lot meaning as I read the manhua. Hopefully I'll be able to order the books some day.
IM BEGGING YOU DONT CLICK READ MORE IF YOU HAVENT FINISHED THE NOVEL
Fun fact: did ya’ll know that the 33 heaven official blessings Hua Cheng fought were the ones that tried to kick Xie Lian out of the cultivation mountain (before his 2nd ascension), the other 2 were Wu Ming and Feng Xin (I think that’s their names)
I really should’ve seen this coming behind San Lang’s name. In Thousand Autumns, Yuan Xiuxiu would call Yan Wushi “Yan Lang” as a way of flirting. It’s even explained the novel .-.
If they didn't meet in that pseudo-wedding setting I feel he'd give himself a name of the "baby" or "darling" kind
despite knowing there wouldn’t be a kiss when they cut to the 50/50 angle because of censorship I still thought maybe there would be so I completely missed reveal of Xie Lian knowing his identity
Slowly… I’m reading slowly - THANK you
I was literally thinking about this the other day. I genuinely just thought MXTX called him San Lang in her books because of the order of her books.
Binghe is also known as bingge - brother
Lan Wangji is often called er-gege - second brother
San Lang is third brother...
Fantastic stuff
