Can you imagine what Joe Burrow would do if the o-line was a top 5 line. They improved the line last off-season, now it's time to finish the job. The offense would be nearly unstoppable.

Well we’d have two Super Bowls. Brady and Mahomes have done it with good o-lines. I’m all for having good receivers but if that means you have a average to below average line than I think that’s the wrong move.

I know it’s unpopular to say but the Bengals should extend then trade Tee before the 2024 draft. Should also trade some 2024 picks now to add another top 100 selection this year. If we want a top 5 line and still have $ for our core talent, then it needs to come through the draft.

@@paulburket As hard as it can be to lose a great popular player, with today's set up in the NFL's salary cap, teams have to balance expensive stars with rookie contracts. That puts a lot of pressure on drafting good players. Teams that can manage that will be successful in the long term. Let's hope the Bengals are successful with that!

@@paulburket I love Tee but I kind of agree with you. Even if they don’t trade him and he stays I don’t think they should resign him. He’s going to get 25 mil min and I think it would be better spent on the defense/o-line. Idk about you guys but to me it felt like our defense is what’s carried us the last two years. Joe and the offense took a big step last year but they were not as good as I feel they should be. It always seems like it’s our defense winning this games.

With all due respect to Jake's point about comp picks, I agree with James; if you're trying to win, you want to add in free agency rather than lose (when possible).
I think with how great the Bengals have been at using mid-tier FAs (the only misses in the last 3 years are Waynes and - arguably - Collins), it makes sense to continue going after that tier of free agent. If you can find more guys like Vonn Bell at age 24-26 in a scheme that isn't a great fit, grab them for 6-8 million, and then have them play above their contract, it makes sense.
Now, they still need to hit on their picks, obviously. They wouldn't be able to sign the same amount of guys as they previously had been, so you need to do well in the draft.

I will admit to falling into this and pining for an offensive tackle but listening to both plans, if you're thinking let's sign a tackle to put it to bed or a tackle to develop or a tackle to place hold while Collins works his way back, why are we acting like Jackson Carman doesn't exist?? Jackson Carman showed enough in the playoffs where he deserves a shot at RT if he has been locked in all off-season. If the Bengals don't want to give him that opportunity then he also showed enough during the playoffs where he should have some trade value. 🤔

Just curious if you guys can elaborate more on the Free Agency-related compensatory pick strategy and how/where Cincinnati might have opportunities to employ it.
IMO, James' dismissal of the 49ers as an example of successful comp pick strategy was way off. They've played in the last 2 NFC Championship games and were a dropped Tartt INT from facing us in SB LVI. They got there this past season with their 3rd-string QB. (and that doesn't even take into account making it to SB LIV)
Then, as Jake mentioned, you've got the Chiefs, who've won 2 of the last 4 Super Bowls and who have hosted the last 5 AFC Championship Games.
That sure looks like 2 successful team-building projects to me.
Apparently the NFL uses some kind of formula based on salary/playing time/post-season honors to award compensatory picks to each team that loses "more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year."
According to SF GM John Lynch, there's a definite strategy (along with a learning curve) when it comes to compensatory picks. At the NFL combine Lynch had the following to say:
"You have to have the patience and the vision to allow some of these guys to walk, get some comp picks as a result to kind of play that game. [It] took us a little while to figure that one out, but I think we've tried to understand that you can't just go full throttle. And you get some rewards if you have a little more discipline. That's never easy, but it is necessary."

Is it just me, or does every off-season discussion sound like a a damn fantasy football mentality??
All the praise to the excellent work of the Cincinnati BENGALS Front Office/Duke Tobin is just overlooked during the off-season! The high level of investment in the O-line room with Vets AND development young talent is thrown completely out the window because of a series of unfortunate (and untimely) injuries to the starting O-line. People ignore individual player's personal drive, growth and development (Carmen Jackson). I have the utmost respect in the Coaches and their ability to raise the bar of the whole O-Line room with the existing athletes in the room! If an exceptional O-lineman falls through the cracks to 28, then great, but looking for a "name" FA for the O-Line (unless it's a super bargain) is admitting a failure of the FO.

@@Magicmann1323 An overpriced LB or one that cannot cover vs the pass will not help us get to the bowl. ADG is very solid. We need a RT, we have no strong safety starter and no FS2, Asiasi is the only TE on the roster, our only RBs are a 10M cap hit coming off his worst season (and off season) & Evans who was a terrible draft pick, we have one healthy boundary CB starter, one coming off an ACL and no backups. We have other needs more pressing.

I would bring back Sample on a bargain basement deal. He is a really good blocker. Wilcox is already on the roster and so is Asiasi. Then I would draft a TE between rounds 2-4. I would bring back Brandon Allen. Allen knows the system. I would bring back Apple as a backup or reserve only. And I would draft a CB in the first 3 rounds perhaps round 1 or 2. Andrew Wylie is a good tackle. If the Chiefs let him walk we should get him.

He would back up Jonah and Carman would be a backup guard or tackle. Trey Hill is the backup center and we still need another guard in the draft to replace Max Scharping.
