Same. Hasn't had much breakthough here in the States yet I think. I'm hooked now. This bass sound was something I was playing around with but damn. Love it, going to make a setup like this.
I didn't realize how pleasantly simple Royal Blood's riffs are. Not to say they're bad, they're just not terribly technical except for maybe their timing. I have a new appreciation for their songs now, thanks guys.
Royal Blood often hit the sweet spot for complexity. Less is more, too many bands create a mess of sound that while technically impressive, is just white noise.
I know Mike is a less traditional and impressive bassist (in that he plays like a blooming guitarist), but I'd look forward to some bassist 'Sounds like' from you two. This was a really fun ep to watch under the premise of a bass guitar, and a few more would be cool.
Do Not Eat Studios Agreed. Lel Claypool, any of the Metallica guys (but especially cliff), Fieldy and Justin Chancellor would be a few good ones just off the top of my head.
@Sam Parker no it didn't this rig sounded worse cos out of the black sounded like a wet fart when the bass gets palm muted and the pick attack was too clinky for figure it out
After watching "Sound Like Royal Blood - Without Busting The Bank" a few 100 times ...My wife has bought me the Behringer EQ700, NR300 and Fender ABY Red this Christmas to add to my Line 6 M5 (for the Pitch Glide) the Mooer BASS Fog Fuzz and the BOSS ME50B to go direct to my bass Amp. I just want to say a big Ten'Q... This Aussie lives in the arse end of the World and can't make to the Anderton's store in the UK... what I am thankful for is your awesome YouTUBE videos... Rabea and Matt are really the Peas and Carrots of rock music info...
That is literally the rig that I've been trying to figure out (sic!) for the past couple of months. Now you guys have just made it a hell of a lot easier, thank you so much!
Seen royal blood open for QOTSA a few years back and absolutely loved them. Been listening to them every day since! Definitely one of my favorite bands and cant wait for the new album.
This was actually super close, I think it sounded perfect without the EQ, I think that tamed the bite too much. Their live setup sounds much more like you guys' setup minus the EQ.
I'm loving these newer videos where you go into more detail about the gear choices you guys are making as well as the discovery process of tweaking the setting to achieve the sound you're looking for. Alos it was super cool to meet both Matt and Rabea at NAMM. I was the lame guy in the red Millennium Falcon shirt. I don't really get starstruck but it was soo awesome to get to meet you two. Thanks for being awesome!
I am floored at Rabea's chops on this one! are you kidding me? Picking up a bass guitar and shredding on that too? Royal Blood is blowing up here in the states. The most original band I've seen in quite some time.
+Myke Koenen YESSUM PLEASSUM! :D Drop - C, low action, Carvin/marshall amps, Ibanez Iceman or SG (Strat if you go THAT far back) and a decent gainy distortion box. :D
Great series! "Sound like John Petrucci" and/or "Sound like Nuno Bettencourt" would be awesomeness. I really like how you don't just pick the gear, but you explain how each component contributes to the tone.
Just a heads up for future videos, do you think you could do a full on camera shot of where all the cables are running in to? You do a good job of explaining what does what, but all through this video I was constantly wondering what the bass itself is plugged in to. Also, using both a bass and guitar amp, what is going in to the input sockets of each of those amps? A cable diagram would be very useful in these kind of videos.
Why am I so late to the party?? I've been listening to Royal Blood non-stop after discovering them just a couple of months ago. This was a really cool video on how to get that bass sound.
I never heard about Royal Blood before this video, now I really got into it. So, first of all, thanks. Now, it would be cool to see more "Sound Like" about bass. There are some bassists whose tones are worth chasing: Geddy Lee, Justin Chancellor, Chris Wolstenholme, Billy Gould just to name some.
Saki Miyu probably the whammy/pitch shift pedal they needed was too expensive. But with this kind of low budget you could easily get a great whammy pedal and still not bust the bank. Make yourself an arduino circuit to control the down/up setting and you’re good to go for pretty much all of their songs. It’s
Yeah, there was a huge missed opportunity for it when they did the bass solo of figure it out, cos the amp feedback would've been a great lead in for Ten Tonne Skeleton! Personally if I were to do this setup I would've gotten the following: Gretsch G2220 - £350 Fender Rumble LT25 - £210 Fender Mustang GTX50 - £400 EHX Nano POG - £200 Boss PS6 Harmonist - £150 EHX Tuner - £45 EHX Bass Big Muff - £85 clocking in at £1440
Your best sounds-like vid yet gentlemen. Thanks. I'd never even heard of R.B. before but checked out their vids before playing all of this sounds-like vid and... dang it! Now I I'm shopping for gear I didn't need/want yesterday :)
Man this channel is like that 'Magic's Biggest Secrets Finally Revealed' show on tele, don't really want to know how the magic is done but can't help watching it
Not sure how relevant my comment will be all these years on, but basically: I’ve been playing guitar 2 years and bit, last year about September I got into royal blood and still love them, and I’ve managed to hash together a really good sound for guitar instead of bass, as I’m limited heavily by budget due to still being in school and working part time. I borrowed a cheap multi fx pedal from school, as well as bought another one for myself, then I borrowed a Fender Frontman 212r which really helps the tone sound big. The rig (in order) is: Guitar Zoom G2.1u multi fx Zoom G3XN multi fx dual output from pedal goes into Fender Frontman 212r My crappy 1x8 practice amp For the g2.1u, most settings are off, apart from distortion, boost, Eq, noise reduction. The G3XN is as follows: TS drive, fender deluxe amp model, fender 1x12 cab sim, OptComp compressor, pitch shifter (for the octave) and then an EP stomp. As it has 3 stompbox panels on the pedal, I keep the last 3 pedals active so that I can change the tone for verse/chorus/instrumentals and all that. The tone changes for different RB songs (ie Boilermaker is very fuzzy, loose change is more octave-based, lights out ‘solo’ is more trebly etc. I was going to make an actual video on this instead of writing it all out, but I don’t wanna waste my time lol. Good luck
Some fantastic tips there. It sounded great!! and for what you paid, it couldn't really get any better. Thanks Lads,Great channel this,I only found it today.Cheers.GRAY.
right, I've compiled a list of the suggestions I've seen the most: Hendrix Van Halen Metallica Avenged Sevenfold The Edge Gary Moore and i've forgotten the rest
An Epi Firebird and the CR60 with a fuzz and a ringwormy/phaser thing. The CR60 is really dynamic and any volume. You gotta crank the 120 for a good sound.
I only recently got to such a chain myself, because I play sludge on the Bass VI in a very low tuning, but I miss the fat sub bass and ended up using an octaver, signal splitter and two amplifiers. And in the end I find that there is a band with such a legendary sound and analysis of how to do it! As a result, I invented the wheel)) And the video is great!
I LOVE these segments!! Always impressed with what you pull off for the $. Not really a big Royal Blood fan, but this is my favorite so far. I'd love to see more Sounds Like for bass players with a distinctive sound?
I can just picture Mike for Royal Blood watching going, either 'LoL they are never gonna get it" or 'Holy shit they Figured it out"
I see what you did there ;D
Heeeey well you're clever aren't you? lol
only just realised the unintentional pun
Hehe nice man
I see that cheeky pun
I didn't have a clue who Royal Blood were before watching this. Now I can't stop listening to them :D
Check out lightning bolt. like royal blood but more over the top
If you like them, give Death From Above 1979 a try, they've been around since 2002, doing the same thing, just heavier (and in my opinion, better)
Same. Hasn't had much breakthough here in the States yet I think. I'm hooked now. This bass sound was something I was playing around with but damn. Love it, going to make a setup like this.
Barbequed Happy Meal Ah, well shows how much attention I pay to all that
TheDeathJesters I’m seeing them live in April
That moment at 21:02 when Matt switches in the bass amp. HOLY CRAP!
I never knew this band was just bass and drums. They figured out how to sound like more than just a bassist for the string instruments.
I didn't realize how pleasantly simple Royal Blood's riffs are. Not to say they're bad, they're just not terribly technical except for maybe their timing. I have a new appreciation for their songs now, thanks guys.
The new album has some really hard riffs on it now
@@garmen- I agree at first playing how did we get this dark is a lot harder than it sounds in c standard tuning like mike does
Its all about timing/groove. Simple is awesome but complicated by sub division and feel
Royal Blood often hit the sweet spot for complexity. Less is more, too many bands create a mess of sound that while technically impressive, is just white noise.
I was so lucky to see these guys open for Foo Fighters!! They just played their whole album through and it was fantastic!
The Wandering Internet Wizard wait, was that at the national bowl by any chance???
The Wandering Internet Wizard I’ve got tickets to them in April!
Damn. I honestly would've preferred to see Royal Blood. Nothing against Dave or the Foo Fighters, but as of now I prefer Royal Blood
Also saw them open for foo fighters! @ Fenway Park followed by The Dropkick Murphys. Great show!
They are far better than foo fighters
Holy SHIT, this is the best Sounds Like you guys have done! Big props for explaining everything so clearly. That TONE!!! Hell yeah!
Thanks!!
+CodyAlushin My thoughts exactly! Most tones very pretty good, but when Bea played "Little Monster", my god....beastly tone!
CodyAlushin i
Biggest lesson: Figure It Out is a lot harder to play than it sounds.
It’s actually quite hard
i see the master of puppets intro but backwards
You could say it's hard to ' figure it out '
Easy to play, hard to sing it and play at the same time
On guitar it's pretty easy
Their music is structurally simple, but that's masked by the fact it blends so well due to simply one person essentially playing two parts.
I know Mike is a less traditional and impressive bassist (in that he plays like a blooming guitarist), but I'd look forward to some bassist 'Sounds like' from you two. This was a really fun ep to watch under the premise of a bass guitar, and a few more would be cool.
+Lord Tarkenton Theres definitely some amazing bass tones I'd love to see them figure out.
Do Not Eat Studios Agreed. Lel Claypool, any of the Metallica guys (but especially cliff), Fieldy and Justin Chancellor would be a few good ones just off the top of my head.
do that by busting the bank
apfelmistnutte I second this.
Caleb McKinney done
this rig sounded better
busting the bank sounded like shit
@Sam Parker no it didn't this rig sounded worse cos out of the black sounded like a wet fart when the bass gets palm muted
and the pick attack was too clinky for figure it out
Only just discovered these guys. As a guitarist....I'm scared for my future. Brilliant work up guys.
😅😊 @21:05 the look on Rabea's face when the bass drops is worth the price admission!!! He is in tone heaven!!!
I will never get tired of this video. I came to see it almost everyday.
Gary Clark Jr. guys!
+Gavin McLeod use a 335 or a nice creamy toned guitar. put loads of gain and roll the tone completely of the guitar, gives it a really thick tone
+Christian Brown good idea! Gonna try that out
+Christian Brown +fuzz
+Christian Brown He uses an SG on half his live set, wouldn't exactly call that creamy. Fender tube amp + a fuzz will get you 90% of the way there
+Gavin McLeod This!
Holy shit the tone in this is fucking amazing.
Whether it sounds like Royal Blood or not, it's immense
I love this series because i find out about new bands that iv'e never heard of before and it's so imaginative.

Sound like Death From Above 1979!
I though I was the only person in the earth that would recognize that.. HAHA
Yeahhh, found them after royal blood, I actually prefer DFA 1979 now 😂😂😂
Royal blood are 10x better dfa are ok but they add to much fx and backing vocals! I love how raw but full sounding rb are
That is literally the rig that I've been trying to figure out (sic!) for the past couple of months. Now you guys have just made it a hell of a lot easier, thank you so much!
Absolutely love Royal Blood. First heard about them in 2014 cause Matt Helders wore a RB t - shirt at Glastonbury, and I've loved them ever since!!
+RobertGoodall The Agile Beast himself!
+CodyAlushin YES. Matt is a fucking legend.
I can't say I'm a massive RB fan, but wow guys - this was one of my favourite yet. Really well explained and what a sick tone!
Thorougly headbanging to this tone. It sounds MASSIVE. Great job!
Seen royal blood open for QOTSA a few years back and absolutely loved them. Been listening to them every day since! Definitely one of my favorite bands and cant wait for the new album.
This was actually super close, I think it sounded perfect without the EQ, I think that tamed the bite too much. Their live setup sounds much more like you guys' setup minus the EQ.
they should've done ten tonne skeleton instead of the figure it out solo because that would've been the PERFECT opportunity to do that song
@@widowmaker5544 they should’ve done Ten Tonne Skeleton instead of Little Monster
I saw Royal Blood open for Foo Fighters a year ago, they were pretty awesome. Thanks for making this video.
Sound like Muse!
ye!
ye!
matt and Chris
+Nick Parolini including bassist
+Nick Parolini YEEEEESSSS
Absolutely loving these "Sound Like" vids. Keep up the good work, Jents.
yesssss muse next plzzzzz
I'm loving these newer videos where you go into more detail about the gear choices you guys are making as well as the discovery process of tweaking the setting to achieve the sound you're looking for.

From our perspective your graph of RB's popularity has them traveling from huge fame to obscurity in a very short time. Sounds great, BTW.
True story! Should have reversed for viewer clarity... Next time!
I am floored at Rabea's chops on this one! are you kidding me? Picking up a bass guitar and shredding on that too? Royal Blood is blowing up here in the states. The most original band I've seen in quite some time.
They just sound like generic hipster indie rock to me.
Sounds like Tame Impala (Kevin Parker) please!
Rabea, stop introducing me to amazing music. I don't have time for anything else anymore. Well done, stunning band!
Velvet Underground
Sonic Youth
Johnny Marr
Stone Roses
Yes!
Sonic youth!!!!! Craziness!!!
yes yes yes yes yes!!!
Johnny Marr would be sick!!
My vote's on Sonic Youth. Lots of cool tones and gear.
Okay, now that I've seen almost all "Sound like..." Videos, THIS one is plain brilliant.
Sound like System of a down
Dig!
+Myke Koenen
YESSUM PLEASSUM! :D
Drop - C, low action, Carvin/marshall amps, Ibanez Iceman or SG (Strat if you go THAT far back) and a decent gainy distortion box. :D
+Myke Koenen fucking THIS
+Myke Koenen YES
This would be fucking awesome.

Sound Like Muse would be great next!
they cant stop smiling hearing that sound.must be a real good sound to play with.you guys did such a good job!
zaaaapppppppaaa :-)
also... this was one of the best so far! great job.
I really dig your explanation and the layered demonstration of that gear. by far your best "sounds like" imho. the result speaks for itself.
You guys should do this by busting the bank aswell
You guys hit the nail on the head with this one. The tones you achieved were bang on.
Sound like Black Stone Cherry!!!!!! Come on
YEEESSSSS
Aaaaah yes I so wanna see that!
I would like to see this too
+DaBaconFiles New Album tomorrow!! :)))))))))
PLEASE
This will always be my favorite sounds like. Royal Blood, an appearance by Matt Knight, and a cool rig.
sound like wavves or FIDLAR?
Yes!!
fidlar? bunch of stuff found and stolen from house parties. that's all. honestly they'll just play whatever they can find
yesssssss!!!!
Terrance Hill thats whats so good about it
+Asim Chowdhury Wavves yes!!
Why am I so late to the party?? I've been listening to Royal Blood non-stop after discovering them just a couple of months ago. This was a really cool video on how to get that bass sound.
Sound like Karnivool! PUHLEEEZZ!
been waiting for that one too
Yes! I love it when something completely unexpected penetrates the shell of traditional thinking.
'Without busting the bank'
*2 grand*
'Well'
I never heard about Royal Blood before this video, now I really got into it. So, first of all, thanks. Now, it would be cool to see more "Sound Like" about bass. There are some bassists whose tones are worth chasing: Geddy Lee, Justin Chancellor, Chris Wolstenholme, Billy Gould just to name some.
How could you not do Ten Tonne Skeleton?!
It’s
EHX Pitchfork with expression pedal, -cheaper, better sounding, and more reliable than the POS /disposable Whammy.
Yeah, there was a huge missed opportunity for it when they did the bass solo of figure it out, cos the amp feedback would've been a great lead in for Ten Tonne Skeleton!
Personally if I were to do this setup I would've gotten the following:
Gretsch G2220 - £350
Fender Rumble LT25 - £210
Fender Mustang GTX50 - £400
EHX Nano POG - £200
Boss PS6 Harmonist - £150
EHX Tuner - £45
EHX Bass Big Muff - £85
clocking in at £1440
Hadn't heard of Royal Blood before but I love some ABY trickery. This is the kind of thing I was pining for from the Nano Pitch Fork review.
I'd like a Sounds Like Royal Blood by busting the bank!
Your best sounds-like vid yet gentlemen. Thanks. I'd never even heard of R.B. before but checked out their vids before playing all of this sounds-like vid and... dang it! Now I I'm shopping for gear I didn't need/want yesterday :)
Sound like Lemmy Kilmister
since they can't afford a rickenbacker what will they use in replacement?
William Allison I have heard that the best alternative would be a jazz bass bridge pickup.
Bit late but they could use a Thunderbird as he swapped out some of his basses' pickups for T-Bird pickups.
Man this channel is like that 'Magic's Biggest Secrets Finally Revealed' show on tele, don't really want to know how the magic is done but can't help watching it
I guess you could say they...
Figured it out?
now normally i don't say this cos i save it for rooster teeth and RWBY related stuff but...
GOD DAMMIT BARB
someone already made that joke before you
@Saki Miyu but i made that pun intentionally which makes it funnier

Another great video! Just goes to show that you dont need big expensive amps to get good sounds.
That bass sounds HUGE!
SOUND LIKE TAME IMPALA
+Raul Mejia God yes
This.
+Raul Mejia just put a fucking phaser in everything
Fuck yeah dude!

As in from the stone roses
Fun! I'm just starting out and have the Gretsch bass. Really dig that groove. This is going to be a great journey. Thanks for the info...
Primus!!!
Nailed it. Helluva job lads!
The Virginmarys would be a fun one to do.
Only new to bass, savage demo chaps. Nailed it.
Please Do a sound like beatles
Wow!!! Thats the best sound i’ve heard in years🤟🏽 Now i have to start another rock band. Again...
right, I've compiled a list of the suggestions I've seen the most:
Hendrix
Van Halen
Metallica
Avenged Sevenfold
The Edge
Gary Moore
and i've forgotten the rest
and my input, Rory Gallagher, a criminally underrated player IMHO
+Oisin McPhillips they did metallica a long time ago
+Oisin McPhillips Rory Gallagher is a guitar god
+Oisin McPhillips You can nail Rory with literally an AC30, Treble Booster and a Strat.
+Oisin McPhillips
Along with Rory, who is too often overlooked, I'd add Michael Schenker and Mick Green.
DSL40 allowed.
So good fellas, I thought you might have struggled but you nailed it! (Now I'm off to go learn all these riffs!)
if you were happy to do another bass sound like i suggest Les claypool, primus with bass and guitar
Really cool episode guys! Very interesting stuff.
Can you do 'Sound like Rival Sons - without busting the bank'
Yes!
YEAHHHHH.
+IQ451 THIS!!
+IQ451 get a jazz master or a gretsch and a orange crush 120w head
An Epi Firebird and the CR60 with a fuzz and a ringwormy/phaser thing. The CR60 is really dynamic and any volume. You gotta crank the 120 for a good sound.
Thats wicked guys, thanks for doing royal blood. Really needed to get my head around how it was possible. Cheers
How to sound like "any car advert" without busting the bank
This episode was absolutely an amazing episode, well done!
Sounds like Green Day!
get a baby marshall, ds-1, and a melody maker or les paul junior. done
Preferred this over the actual tone. Pretty cool
Sound like Radiohead!
That was most excellent. Well done, gentlemen.
sound like Sunn O))) ;)
very close to their sound I love it
How to sound like John Petrucci without buying a Mesa!
+SandStormer YESSS!!!

And in the end I find that there is a band with such a legendary sound and analysis of how to do it! As a result, I invented the wheel)) And the video is great!
MEGADETH.... we need metal in the sounds like
+carlos mendes Agree, need more metal. I love all the classic rock stuff but would love to see what metal tones can be made with the budget they set.
Absolutely incredible job on this one guys
Please, do "Sound like Ghost".
Just came across you guys - nice work Matt and Rabea! I am already a dedicated subscriber!
Sounds like courtney barnett
awesome work guys! bet that was well fun to play!
sound like biffy would be great
Wow, amazing job on this. I'm amazed how spot on it is for being so simple.
Sound like Lamb of God!!!
i wanna see the ghost walking solo
I LOVE these segments!! Always impressed with what you pull off for the $.
Not really a big Royal Blood fan, but this is my favorite so far. I'd love to see more Sounds Like for bass players with a distinctive sound?
