George Strait: Unseen For 30 Years, One of His Earliest Interviews!

- Back when I was the 19-year-old associate producer for "The Weekend Journal" on Victoria, Texas' tiny ABC affiliate KXIX-TV, one of the artists we interviewed was a fresh young country artist with a winning smile. His name was George Strait, and ever since our show went "Strait" off the air in 1982, this footage has gone unseen. Here it is for you to enjoy at last! (BTW: This may not be absolutely the earliest video of George Strait online, but if you want to compare it with what may be his most recent picture, check out the cover of the latest issue of Country Line mag: www.countryline...
I swear, if you look really. REALLY close at his face you can see that he's definitely gotten a wrinkle sometime over the last one-third of a century!!!
"Possibly have a career.." lol! He became the King of Country
Thanks for your love and support. Have you ever been to my concert........
This was back in the early 80's when I was asked by a couple friends in high school to go out for the weekend that George Straight was coming to town (Victoria, TX @ Sun Valley). I think my response was something like, "Who is George Strait" and I turned the offer down. Boy, I still regret that decision today.
see my comment in the video george strait amarilo astrodome. You did miss out. Have a great day.

Before he reached stardom george used to tour the navajo reservation in northern arizona. It seems like yesterday.
@George Strait Since 1981.
That is where I first met him in Arizona he was playing in local taverns I believe that he was great from the very start and such a man of integrity such a gentleman my GS that’s what he told me to call him all of his good friends call GS it was really hard not to fall in love with him that I knew he was married to his high school sweetheart and I never could do anything like that and either could he that’s what I really liked about him we were the same in that way very dedicated to the family he really talk to me just like a good friend that I never did go google over stars in the first place I’ve met a lot of country stars and I just treat them like normal human beings I don’t go crazy over them but I let them know how much I like them! As a person and they man with a God-given talent for singing and I love the way he moves his shoulders you could tell he’s Tex-Mex honestly he can really dance good Mexican music I don’t mean the hat dance for those of you that is never been to a real Mexican dance just look at his shoulders he’s not stiff like a lot of people that dance to country music two-step
Wow. Loved it
GREAT TO SEE,,,THANKS 👍 FOR POSTING.🤠.

Met hubby at Captains Table in Victoria, Tx...George and Ace in the Hole band was playing, all you had to pay was the $2.00 cover charge, band was free lol Hubby asked me to dance, it was a game dance. George called out a number at the end of the song and if you were standing on it, you got a free 45 record....I still have the record and the hubby!
we didn't even think to ask because he was a nobody lol I keep hoping one day we will be at a concert and take the 45 and ask him to sign it after we tell him how we got it...it was a demo record. Song we played the most..."If you're thinking a Stranger is coming home" Well a stranger came home and never left lol that was 33 years ago :)
Deb K that is an awesome story! I bet he would sign it for sure. why don't you try getting a hold of someone through his website or Facebook, and tell them the story. I bet if it got to him, he would definitely contact you. lol he might want to even buy it back for himself. I'm from the same area as Victoria
Deb K ☺💕
+Deb K hes been playing alot in vegas these days

Little did he know what kind of a career he would have. He is so admired and loved. Thanks for sharing this video. - Straitfever/Linda

Why do I have to do what I’m about to do? I apologize.
You- “King George, I almost died for you! I am your number one fan!”
Other people- “No I am! I, uh, am that one daughter of his, uh, 4th cousin thrice removed’s friend.”
Me- “Oof. You didn’t get to see him? You need free tickets, dude.”
Me- _proceeds to make this comment_

@George Strait Lmao! Hey there, "George"! I've been a fan of the REAL George Strait for 35 years.
I really enjoy their music and vocals, such natural talent and that's urged me to continue trying with my country originals, here in Australia as it takes a lot time to start a following for your own music.
Thanks for your love and support. Have you ever been to my concert💕💕💕💕
He is so cute in this video.
My best friend played golf with him out in the dominion. Great guy.

Thanks for your love and support. Have you ever been to my concert,
I just learned that a few months ago George Strait's first producer Blake Mevis passed way from Covid complications. Blake Mevis produced Strait Country and Strait from the heart albums from 81 and 82. Very sad.
How true, how true.
Thanks for your love and support. Have you ever been to my concert...........
That man has got Texas written all over him
Thanks for your love and support. Have you ever been to my concert,
Saw Don Walser back in the day at some of his dances. Don was from the "Old Rock".
Thanks for your love and support. Have you ever been to my concert........
Back when white women were proud to be white.. oh the good ol days
lmao
Your comment about the "real deal" made me think of the late great Don Walser, who I'm proud to have called a friend (but so could anyone who ever met him!). Anyone who enjoys this video needs to check out at least one song/video by the last of the great Texas yodelers. And keep an eye out for when I finally post the great song & interview with Don that I have on an old tape. (Totally irrelevant to the discussion, but my next door neighbor was Don Williams' partner in The Pozo Seco Singers!)
Thanks for your love and support. Have you ever been to my concert........

This is leftover video shot by THE producer of The Weeknd Journal's producer and it was reported by Dennis Tardan. The original interview used was with George and his wife on his tour bus (very nice people, by the way, very humble man) . The video went national to a popular country and western music show. Yes, it was taped at Sun Valley in Victoria, Texas on a Saturday night with hardly standing room. The Weeknd Journal continued through 1983 (only a short time after a threatened lawsuit regarding an inappropriate news segment, ironically by Tardan) and was produced by a young woman named Yvonne Garcia. None of the mentioned women's "feelings" were ever in the interview that aired. It was originally a thirty minute interview on 3/4" VHS, edited down, of course, commonly used by news station recorders at the time. The tape and its contents was never given to another station or reporter nor was there any other news reporter or industry reporter that was there. In fact, the producer did the video photography as KXIX worked on a shoe string budget and could only send one camera. George's brother, his then tour manager, arranged for the video taping to be done on stage. The photographer fell backwards onto the crowd - almost, as George stopped his song real quick to catch her by the arm while his brother jumped off the stage to get her back on stage steady and spotted her the rest of the night. It was a fantastic night but shame on the person stealing Tardan's work. It was a very good, well done story.
Stealing Dennis' work? Try *saving* Dennis' work! Ever since he wiped an entire 1983 Bill Hicks performance that *we* shot for KIII-TV without even making a VHS dub first, I have fought to preserve as much as I can in spite of Dennis' magnetic attraction to covering up his video tracks! Without my insistence & persistence, his 1979 half-hour RSC interviews with Peter Tork and Mel Blanc would be only memories, like the episodes w/Sheldon Leonard, Jerry Pam and too many more!
As far as what was broadcast on KXIX-TV in Victoria, what you see here is a direct copy off the archived U-matic VTR tape of that WJ episode, which was in turn dubbed directly off of the master broadcast edit used to air the program originally. (I *wish* some raw "leftover" video of the Strait shoot still existed!) FYI, I was indeed unavailable to participate on the night this segment was shot. When I say Strait was one of the celebrities that we (as in the producers of WJ) interviewed, I mean just that: he was interviewed for *our* show. Capisce?
Oh, and BTW the Weekend Journal officially ceased to exist in 1981. I continued working on the series for awhile longer, but the WJ title was retired upon Dennis' ouster and the material aired in that timeslot thereafter was simply referred to as the "weekend news".

@George Strait is this seriously The George Strait??? I’ve been a fan since I was a kid
Still playing fool hearted memory, Friday night fever, lefties gone, I get along with you, it ain’t cool..( awesome tune ) just so many to name. You are my number one pic when I pull out the tele.
You should be killing everyone on UA-cam with subs but I realize the direction the music business is going. (Hick-hop)
Just “give it to me STRAIT” baby!!!
They can’t touch you!❤️
The strange thing is... I’m subscribed to George Strait and it has close to 800k.
Would be cool though if this really is him
@George Strait well, if this is him... what song is this?
“ but they don’t understand... exactly what love boils down to”
“ all it takes to please me is waking in the morning feeling you by my side “
This is great. I love that George comes from a military background. He thought he could make a career out of singing. Who was he kidding?
Thanks for your love and support. Have you ever been to my concert,
He's the king of country music! not this crap today. but I think the group Midland could bring it back. We can only hope right? But nobody can do cowboy music like Gorge Strait can. I'm the firemen that's my name! He the the King!
I wish i was George Strait
You are!
No, you are even better...you are YOU! God made you special as you...

Please kindly report and block any imposter trying to be me.....
Amazing! What's the name of the song he sang on the stage???
Please post if you have more of his early stuff
Thanks for your love and support. Have you ever been to my concert.....
When I heard him cut "Right O Wrong" & Milk Cow Blues I knew he was the "real deal". He ain't the only real cowboy in Country & Western music, just the last one to make it in nashville. Go to a Jody Nix or Jake Hooker dance.
@George Strait George, THANKS for the reply. Been fans of yours since the early 80's, and of Country & Western dance music all our lives. Our first date was to a Faron Young dance while we were still in high school.('73) Through the decades LOTS of dance music. That includes yourself, Bob Wills, pre '70 Ray Price and Willie Nelson, Faron, Jody Nix, and a bunch of others who played them old Texas dance halls! Still dancing, Duke & Cindy Gilleland, Belton Texas
what is the name of last song?
Thanks very much Shy.Long live King! Texas rocks!
"He can make a girl's blue jeans twitch from a 100 yards"
He looks Sweet as Sugar.
Please kindly report and block any imposter trying to be me,
Make a cowgirls jeans twitch at 100 yards lol wtf
funny as fu**!
This is the Strait segment from the Weekend Journal as originally aired on KXIX-TV. Sourced directly off the 3/4" VTR tape of the program archived by the producers of WJ.
He's kind of got a John Travolta vibe about him. Radiant and humble.
John Travolta,,is AROGANT!!!.
Nothing like KING GEORGE.
When was this filmed? My Uncle owned Sun Valley back in the 80's....
Chad Clark: filmed in 1982
What is the name of the song he's singing?
Looks like a cross between Stephen Harper and Sydney Crosby.
Thanks for your love and support. Have you ever been to my concert........
Silly girls, 😆
Please kindly report and block any imposter trying to be me,
Sorry, I only have what I personally was involved in producing during my early days as a young small-town TV mogul. Musically, that means this clip of Strait along with features and/or interviews w/Lee Greenwood, The Hickoids*, Jonathan Richman*, Prisoner, Stevie Ray Vaughan*, Peter Tork*, The Judy's, Night Ranger, Lords of the New Church*, David Bean and the Dishes, Saxon*, and... um... I think that's it.
PS: Asterisk [*] indicates I already have footage posted on UA-cam.
