"All Her Favorite Fruit" remains one of my all-time favorite songs. Camper was a unique, crazy-talented assemblage of great musicians, and David Lowery has been an under-appreciated, under-explored legitimate genius. The fact that I still love listening to so many of these songs 30 years after initially discovering them speaks volumes for the quality of the songwriting that cleverly combines subjects like Patty Hearst's kidnapping, Reagan's dangerous mental deterioration, primal fears of death, bowling with skinheads, and of course, the hilariously bizarre "Eye of Fatima". Those lyrics still frequently pop in my head without (conscious) provocation or warning, and no matter how dark my mood, always make me smile... While I love the historical and political satire that animates the lyrics, often both obscured and highlighted by the totally original musical arrangements, I still remain a sucker for what I've always considered Camper's two best love songs. Neither are love songs in the traditional sense, but both "She Divine's Water" and "All Her Favorite Fruit" convey a deeply sweet sadness that brings me back to the days when I met a German guitar player through my job and instantly fell hopelessly and irrationally in love. One of my favorite verses in "All Her Favorite Fruit" is weirdly entwined with the agonizing magic of that tragically impossible love: "...She serves him mashed potatoes and she serves him peppered steak with corn. She pulls her dress up over her head, lets it fall to the floor..." I don't know how or why this (and other lyrics) still so vividly conjure that out of control feeling of falling in love, but listening tonight re-awakened feelings I thought I'd outgrown, especially after 20 years of marriage to my impossible star-crossed love with the beautiful, brilliant German musician I met so many years ago. Though we've been married for 20 years now, my love for him remains sublime, almost juvenile, likely because the geographic distance between us makes a "real marriage" ephemeral at best. Perhaps the bittersweet circumstances surroinding my one big love explains why I'm so profoundly moved by the sense of doomed love implicit in David's lyrics and amplified by the similar essence of the underlying music. I truly miss Camper van Beethoven, just as I miss being so young. Although I liked Cracker, it never matched the significanct emotional impact I still experience when I'm mentally fit enough to shake off the increasing oddities that cause me to wall myself off from the rest of the world, so much so, that even hearing some of these songs can fluctuate between being too painful a reminder of regrets, fears and a very different, far away life, and immense gratitude that one time I got lucky enough to find that exceedingly rare phenomenon of pure love. Listening to Camper tonight brings back a bittersweet nostalgia mixed with heartache that makes me feel more than I can usually tolerate. But the beauty and intensity and pure fun of Camper van Beethoven is worth whatever sadness resurfaces. Camper is still one of the best , even 25+ years after I became a full-fledged geeky-fan.
God damnit. I am bawling in tears over this right now. Some little thought sparked my search for this video and it immediately provoked deep feelings of longing. Your beautiful comment put me right over the edge. It IS worth it. Totally worth the vulnerability
These songs were always really special to me when they came out but I never got to see them play live. Watching them now, tears come to my eyes, my brother turned me on to this music and then later he and I played many of these songs in our band. He just died one week ago so I came here to honor him but also I'm very Blown Away by the music and the performance
RIP in peace to your brother. I too missed CVB forever, had never gotten to see them, and always lamented it to the person who introduced their music to me. Then, one year at SXSW, I got to see them twice in the same day. One was a “regular show” - an instore at Waterloo records. Then later that night they played all of tusk and talked about how they were gonna put out a song by song cover of that album, or that they just had - I think still in the “gonna do that wouldn’t it be cool?” phase. Later I saw that they actually did put out a cover of that album just like Davis Lowery said. I told my friend, who had introduced me, saying wow I never did get to see them, then I get to see them twice in one day, both shows for free, with no wristband, just luckily getting in lines, and it turned out he had never gotten to see them back when we were in high school. I thought he had, since he had seen the ramones and the misfits or Danzig, and a couple of other really cool shows. I thought I was competing or catching up to him, but instead I told him I got one show in for each of us, since he was back in Houston and couldn’t make it to Austin that SXSW.
Victor K and his beautiful bass tone. I always loved the tone on this album and damn if it isn’t absolutely perfect here. Always wondered how he got that out of a P-Bass but now see it was a PJ! A-ha! That and his immense talent, love those lines of his!
It always bummed me out how Lowery and crew never really gave her the props she deserved. Johnathan is brilliant and I understand why he’d be the guy to reunite with but it’s as if she’s been ghosted. And I can tell you during that last year before the horrific split, they were playing their best shows - (tension does that- ask Dinosaur)and she was a huge piece of why people loved those shows. Her playing and energy.
Great moment in time from the Key Lime Pie album!!! "She Divines Water" is a song that always blows my mind, and I don't even know WHY!! It's just so beautiful and trippy....
I really loved seeing this. Not only do we see Morgan Fichter enjoying every moment on stage but David Immerglück is also backing up David Lowery on rhythm guitar and even playing pedal steel on Sweethearts.
got introduced to CVB by a Portuguese Mining Engineer in South Africa in 1990, he only had 2 of their songs (Good Guys and Bad Guys and Seven Languages) it took me a few years to hunt down any of their other stuff and I've been a fan ever since. Thank you, Manuel.
Morgan! Gawd I miss those days. So proud of all she has accomplished in her career. This was sometime after she had moved to Oakland with her band, Harm Farm. she blessed my life with her love and talent. Morgan, if you see this, I am still alive... and currently learning mandolin, banjo, and fiddle... and soon will add the double fiddle to my new determination to play bluegrass and traditional Irish as i grow old and gray on my porch. I can't help but think of you every time i practice. Much love to you, wherever you may be
Killin' it in less than 30 minutes. Wish every band could do that. Great selection of songs, but for some reason I kept expecting "We Saw Jerry's Daughter." Also, for someone who never paid much attention to Morgan Fichter (you never really saw her in the videos), she's goddamned captivating.
Thanks for posting this video. It’s special. Never saw them live. This lineup with the amazing note-perfect Morgan Fichter should have made a few more albums. ‘Key Lime Pie’ is a timeless masterpiece.
Wow, this takes me back! I saw this tour + some of their earlier national outings. They were truly in top-form here + on ALL cylinders creatively ~ I love Key-Lime Pie. Morgan is such a great/enchanting/virtuoso + was cool to bring in at the end for their swan song (ha-ha!). Fun fact: I just saw them, literally days ago in Portland w/ Jonathon Segal + they were really, really great. Jon Segal was perhaps, what made this band interesting + was so fun watching him go between guitar/keys/violin w/ such verve...
Truly exceptional performance by the band at this time of their career Key Lime Pie still sounds fantastic Goodness aren’t they young too Morgan’s violin is sublime, and on ‘matchstick men’ is a thing of wonder Thanks for posting this gem

Morgan Fichter on fiddle! my friend from my Berkeley CA days/Freight and Salvage. She's so kind, said nice things about my harmonica playing one night at a jam/party. We jammed and I'm not much for chops but she liked my tone :)
CVB opened for 10k Maniacs in Irvine Amp and the killed. CVB got the crowd off their seats and pumped. Morgan was mesmerizing. Watching her got my sis to play violin.

In Camper context, this tape is a treasure, playing many of my favorite songs. And I could listen to and watch Morgan Fichter forever.
The violinist went on to play with Jane's Addiction, what a resume...CVB at their peak!
Key Lime Pie is one of those albums where every song is good. I must have listened to that tape hundreds of times.

you have a sick lead in "we saw jerry's daughter"
Met you once. This was such a talented group. You included. I hope to see all of you again.
Hey Greg......isn't that David Immergluck on lead Strat? Didn't know he was involved until Monks of Doom.

How come she doesn't get her hair caught up in the bow?
Pure talent!
That kinda shit doesn't happen to goddesses.
What is the song at ~ 10:30?? It's amazing I've never heard it before!
Pictures of Matchstick Men* nevermind, excellent song! Love the violinist!!
@@eastwood4006 Actually a rare cover tune!!! Originally by Status Quo in 1968!
@@Stiglr Thanks! I'll look it up, great song overall to me👍
@@Stiglr lol. not that rare. I actually heard it before the original. I saw them back in '85 and bought a cassette at the door. good times. Take the Skinheads Bowling played regularly in my uni digs for probably longer than my neighbours would've liked. :D
@@cautionTosserI always liked their cover of interstellar overdrive better than pictures of matchstick men as far as CVB goes. But I am hard-pressed to say whether I preferred butthole surfers doing hurdy gurdy man to CvB doing matchstick men
Dios mio!! 🍆
Not the same without Jonathan Segel. She was good but he is a core component to swing and real lyricism in playing.
I agree he's the one that made the band have that unique sound. It's not the same without him.
