  • Join along as I take my 1988 Plymouth Gran Fury to a vintage mansion that was built, just like my Plymouth, in an old school way that doesn't exist anymore. Afterwards I visit the Chrysler Newark Assembly plant in Newark, Delaware to see what remains of the old plant. Come join me for the ride and a trip back in time.

I respect your love for the Gran Fury. My mom had an '83 with a Slant 6 she used as a business car when I was extremely young. One of the first cars I remember. The bright red interior. They truly are a classy yet traditional luxury car.

Very cool video, love that Plymouth Gran Fury!
In 2014 I got a 1972 Pontiac Catalina that was assembled at the GM plant in Doraville, Georgia. I didn’t have my license yet, but I planned on driving the car to the still standing assembly plant. By the time I got my license and had the car in driving shape-replaced the radiator, the Rochester 2 Jet with a Quadrajet, and installed an HEI system-the plant was already flattened. I was devastated...
Last year I actually went by the location for the first time. There was a Nissan dealership and an Infiniti dealership at one corner, but the rest of the lot seemed vacant. I think they should build a little monument dedicated to the workers, maybe even at all shuttered assembly plants.

Hey, great comment and thanks so much for sharing that. I completely agree about some type of monument. Kinda sad to erase so much history and not leave anything behind as a momento. Thanks again and enjoy that Poncho! -Chris

Newark was the only place you could leave/or products leave Delaware and not pay a tax. That little triangle had a direct access to the port. Old Chrysler rep here. Many of the dealers kept driving the M body cars after we quit making them and switched to Fwd products. That is a true time piece!! 👍👍👍

Nice car! I have a 1989 Chrysler Fifth Ave - same color as yours - original 318 with 189,000 miles. I installed the regular electronic ignition along with an NOS 2 bbl Carb - Carter from a later 318 model and it runs like a top. They are great riding cars. There are a few rust spots that I will touch up. Best of luck with your car!

My 88 Aries was assembled in Newark. I still have the window sticker. And it had a saggy headliner like this Gran Fury. Around 15 years ago, I removed the backing board and stuck a replacement piece of headliner on, and that has held pretty well, so far (fingers crossed).
And by coincidence, my 2003 Saturn L Series was assembled at the GM Wilmington plant, so I have a pair of Delaware-assembled old cars.

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  5 років тому

Funny connection with your two cars and Delaware! I like your tip on the headliner. That just might be the trick to fixing mine. It seems I get all kinds of creative comments when folks see it drooping.

Chris, Thanks for the tour!! Here in Western NY (where you got the Greenbriar) two of the three GM plants are alive and kicking, the Chevrolet Tonawanda engine plant and the Harrison Radiator or Delphi plant now. The Chevrolet Gear and Axle plant has been shut down for a long while now. I too like to find articles and information on history in my area. Thanks for the great movie. Ross

Great video. BTW, your Fury (and my '88 Diplomat I had) was built at the Kenosha, WI AMC plant. Chrysler moved M body production there for the last 3 years, renting the space from AMC (before Chrysler bought AMC in '88). Chrysler had a deal w/ the UAW to guarantee at least 3 years of production. Chrysler kept M bodies going because they were still selling and were profitable. Lee Iacocca stated once that they made $5k profit on every 5th Avenue built.

I consider the Mopar embody to be among the last of the Great American automobiles, that lean burn carburetor and ignition system were the only bad things about them. And they were all right when they worked good but so prone to failure.
I've got an 85 Plymouth Grand fury x Daytona Beach detectives car, The guy I bought it from had the engine rebuilt at the local speed shop with performance heads and cam electronic ignition and four barrel demon carburetor long tube headers in full dual exhaust and a four-speed automatic with a shift kit and positraction, she puts right at 350 HP to the rear wheels and there's an absolute blast to drive! I wouldn't trade it for any modern car.

So you're saying 12mpg mostly city driving is bad? 🙄 But seriously, you might want to make sure everything is A okay with that car because I had a 1979 Plymouth with the 360 police interceptor engine and it typically would do 13 to 15mpg combined and about 17 to 18 all highway. I bet the ride is plush.

Soften the corners, more aerodynamic, modernized multi port fuel Injection, 8 speed transmission, traction control and 4 wheel disc antilock brakes. It could be a replacement for the abandoned market of large luxury cars. Town Car Gone,Dealers want it back, Fleetwood Gone, It's Time for a New Yorker, Imperial, Polara, Monaco come back.

I might be only 40, but i am a highly conservative person. Even Bush doesn't meet my level, but that's besides the point. There's something to be said for things that just work tried and true rather then taking gambles. I once restored an '86 Diplomat for a friend, I loved that car. I switched out that electronic controls with that of old school, completely gutting the computer controlled carb and distributor and the thing ran like a top. Better fuel mileage to boot. I enjoyed my AMC Eagle at the time better, and probably still would. I love wagons. Still for a classic, it's a classic! It represented both the worst and best times of Chrysler. The once problematic mid seized valar'e turned out to be a dream boat for grandpa and if you ask me, that's fairly incredible on it's own.

Beautiful video and so interesting. So that isn't the actual plant your regal looking car was "pumped out" of lol?
For the filming of Superman Returns here in Sydney, they shipped in some American cars for the street scenes and among them was a beige Dodge Diplomat with three same body as yours. It had the basic trim of vinyl seats and I was struck at how narrow the body is! They also had early 1990s Chevy Caprice NYC cabs and they were enormous and so wide.
My 92 Australian Ford Fairlane with 302 Windsor runs on LPG gas and gets ...9.6 mpg in pure urban driving... but is half the price of petrol.
The Caprice PPG was made by Holden in Australia especially for U.S law enforcement agencies.
Anyway, love the way you do your videos.

Jason Carpp: never ending government regulations and continuous pressure from the unions killed auto production in the US. Once the penny pinchers in the corporate boardrooms figured out they could avoid both by building in Mexico and elsewhere, the fate of auto production in the US was sealed. Trump has rolled back regulations to the extent he can, but the genie is out of the bottle now and ain’t going back anytime soon.

Considering how police forces, fleets, etc. were still loyal to this concept of vehicle (RWD, V8-powered) back then, so much so that Ford's Panther platform lasted until 2011, I wish Chrysler Corporation could've followed a similar path...if you want a RWD V8-powered Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth sedan equivalent to a 1990's Crown Vic/Grand Marquis/Marauder/Town Car, you're out of options and can either go for one of these M-body models or go post-2000's with the LX platform, which already has some Mercedes-Benz in their DNA and also not as many options as the old days in terms of brand, trim, etc.

The Kenosha plant was actually the AMC assembly line since AMC was building nothing but Renault Alliances there they had space for extra assembly

Try getting some cheap wood molding strips-flat kind. Stain finished.
Cut them to size and insert them in the interior roof molding.(crossways from door to door) They should bend up and fix your headliner problem.
If done right it looks good and fixes the problem. You'll have to experiment with lengths.

I had a 77 Olds Royale that had a saggy headliner.(same color red as yours) I tried that trick and it worked great. Used 3 or 4 strips. It took some tweaking but it worked.

Thanks for checking out my Gran Fury video and for your comment. Right now, I'm not certain what the plans are for the headliner. I'd like to try taking it down and glue it back, but I also want to be very delicate and careful and not ruin it too. I've gotten a bunch of really good suggestions on what to do so I think I'd like to try to fix it myself before paying someone to do it.

Not sure why you'd associate George Bush with this car. When they said the car was conservative they were not referring to political leaning, but in its basic design. A large portion of these cars were fleet sales as government vehicles and taxi cabs, which were much more blue collar roles.

Thanks man for checking out the latest Gran Fury video. Glad you enjoyed it. As for your question on what PPV stands for, it's Chevy's destination for police cars. Dodge simply calls their models Pursuit, like Charger Pursuit, Durango Pursuit.... -Chris

While I tend to think of myself as being *socially liberal,* *(I believe that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry who they love, I believe that marijuana should be legalized, not just for medicinal purposes, but recreational use as well),* when it comes to cars, buildings, etc., I like old-school design, conservative styling, anything old-school. :)

The Devil is the ultimate progressive liberal. Jesus Christ is the Ultimate Conservative . Men are supposed to marry women and that's that. This car came out in 78. I had a 78 Dodge Diplomat Wagon. Chrysler wore out that design after 15 years of building the same car for Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler. No wonder they are always on the verge of bankruptcy.
