How Gamera Beat Godzilla At His Own Game

- In the beginning Gamera was always looked down as the cheaper Godzilla knock-off, but that all changed when the Heisei Gamera Trilogy was released in the last half of the 90s. In this video we take a look back at what makes this trilogy so good compared to what Godzilla was doing at the same time, and how, for a while, Gamera was the King of the Monsters.

Good to see ya in my feed again! Could you consider reviewing Gorga?
I still like the Heisi Godzilla films more. But the Gamera movies are pretty good too.
If Toho and Hensi were to do a Godzilla vs Gamera movie the fan base would go completely nuts over it.
That was originally going to happen in 2002 but toho denied it
A lot of people want Legendary to work out a licensing agreement with Daiei to make him part of the Monsterverse. If that were to happen we might finally see the war a lot of people have been waiting for.

Batman and Gamera went from 60's camp to a more dark/sober tone
Voivoda Dracula that's what the 2014 Gojí film teaser(2013) looked like... smh teasers look better than the actual flim cuz ppl complain on being too dark...
The dark i was refering to is not literal darkness, it's about taking the subject in a serious way on-film, not making it extra camp and not surrounding the action in shadows and extra wangst
Tbf Batman was quite dark in his beginnings for the time when he was being published, then he got campy, then darker than ever. Your point in general still stands tho.
Godzilla also went from '60s camp to being darker & more sober. All of these properties started off to differing degrees of sober mindsets, though. It's fun how things take big changes, readjust, & do it again.
That’s right
When asked about the ending to Revenge of Iris Shusuke Kaneko said that Gamera does win against all of those Gyaos but only if the audience believes in Gamera. The reason why the Gamera trilogy has that spiritual bend to it is because Shusuke noticed that modern youth where increasingly disenfranchised and didn't have any spirituality or beliefs. So he wanted to give them something to believe in even if it's a fictional flying fire breathing turtle.
Also Shusuke Kaneko said that turtles don't exist in the world of Gamera which is just weird.
Yeah, I heard about that too. I used to watch these movies all the time when I was younger. I still do every once in a while, but after learning that turtles don't exist in that universe, I can't watch these movies without that thought dangling in the back of my mind. I still enjoy the Heisei trilogy and I hope they do something with Gamera soon.
@@Slick-yj6mj the worst part is they fucked it up anyway. You can see a glass turtle on someone's desk in Iris.
@@OsirisLord Unless turtles are some sort of cryptid or myth, maybe?
@@OsirisLord Or maybe companies took advantage of Gamera's fights against Gyaos and Legion that they made merchandise off of him
The kid in the first movie has a pet turtle...
The reason is that while Godzilla was still popular, they recycled a lot of other popular Monsters after Biollante flopped hard (with the exception of Battra). It wasn't until the Series was nearing its end that they came up with something somewhat 'original' (SpaceGodzilla) and something a bit more original (Destoroyah).
Gamera instead did the opposite; it reused an old Showa monster (Gyaos), then they went more original with Legion and Iris, while the Gyaos only returned very briefly in the third film.
Perhaps my favorite moment of the trilogy comes in the second film when you’re with the people at the restaurant and on the street going about their business and out of nowhere Gamera and another monster are suddenly knocking down buildings around them. I think that’s the first time I saw collateral damage portrayed like that. Even though Gamera is the hero, he’s still a danger to bystanders...
LOL, check out the damage done by Gamera simply landing. Looked like a street in New York during the Independence Day attack on the Empire State Building.
1:20 wait a minute. Is Gamera fighting and Imperial Star Destroyer?
Yes lol.
AND lots of stock footage from all of the previous Gamera adventures. Super Monster Gamera is the Godzilla's Revenge of the series. LOL
No, but yes.
@@TheVaultMaster Super Monster is much worse than All Monsters Attack (Godzilla's Revenge) though, at least in my opinion.
I actually really like All Monsters Attack, Yes there's stock footage but it's stock footage from 2 of my favourite Godzilla movies (Son of Godzilla and Ebirah Horror of the Deep) plus it's got Minilla who is my favourite Kaiju... Even If I don't like his appearance or the fact that he talks in All Monsters Attack, that's excused though because it's meant to be in Ichiro's dream, plus when he grows big he doesn't speak anymore which I like.
I like Gabbara, he's ugly and stupid but I like him :) and the whole fight with him is entertaining to me.
And I like Ichiro himself, he's kinda cute and I kind of enjoy the Home Alone type thing they've got going with him and the robbers.
Plus I enjoy the soundtrack, it's silly and over the top, childlike.. But i like it.
So yeah... I like All Monsters Attack (Godzilla's Revenge) as for Super Monster though I've only seen it once, All I remember is nothing new and all stock footage and then a human story that really is the lamest thing I've ever seen in a Tokusatsu film... And believe me. Mm I have a very high tolerance for stupid over the top Tokusatsu films.. The Showa Godzilla, Showa Gamera, Showa Ultraman etc etc films are my favourite films of those franchises, my favourite Godzilla films are Son of Godzilla and Ebirah Horror of the Deep right after the original Gojira... But even so.. Super Monster isn't just cheesy and fun.. It's painful and lame..

The Kaneko Gamera Trilogy comprises 3 of the FINEST giant monster movies ever made, and even to this day, they remain mostly unsurpassed.
BioGoji 1989 I agree to this. I love Godzilla however the 90’s Gamera Trilogy beats the entire Heisei Godzilla movies.
@@TheOmyllBernard idk about ALL of them, maybe mechagodzilla 2, but definitely not vs destroyah

Not to mention some monsters looked like they were stuck in loops.
I personally wish for Gamera to have Kaiju allies of his own (yes that includes giant robots) for future films.
Daimajin would make an amazing ally.
@@Electro21964 isn't Daimajin too brutal for being an ally?
Planned plot for vs Galasharp revealed that the two baby Galasharps can be potential allies of Gamera.
I love to see Whale God, Yonggary, Imoogi, and more, to be Gamera's allies..
@@voivodadracula1936 Daimajin was an anti-hero in his debut film, but he eventually became more of a protector by the third film
Personally if I were to create an ally - or just two new characters in general - for Gamera, I'd probably look to the Four Auspicious Beasts (the four mythological creatures that represent the four cardinal directions in much of East Asian culture) for inspiration since the Heisei Gamera trilogy does reference them in Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris. In the film Gamera is compared to and is also believed to have been the inspiration for the Black Tortoise of the North (Genbu), and some fans speculate that this means that Gyaos and Iris may have been the inspiration for the Vermilion Bird of the South (Suzaku).
As there are no other Gamera characters which at least resemble the Azure Dragon of the East (Sieryu) and the White Tiger of the West (Byakko), I would mostly consider creating two new Gamera kaiju with influences taken from the two aformentioned mythological beasts with one or possibly both becoming an ally to Gamera.
Then again, this is how I'd approach the concept of making new monsters and potential allies in the Gamera universe. Feel free to share your thoughts on this idea.
You know what this trilogy reminds me of? The Planet of the Apes trilogy from 2010.
I mean think about it: reboot of a franchise that had degenrated into a laughing stock, no one thought it would do well, let alone be good. Then, it IS good, surprisingly so, gets better with the second film, and then the third is even better, to the point of being called not just the one of the years best films, but "what blockbusters should strive to be."
The main difference being I want more Gamera, but Apes is fine where it is (so please leave it alone, Disney).
Disney has stated already that they are continuing the Apes movies, even though The 3rd film left on an ending for the franchise, there's still so much lore they could do. There's like 6 or 7 ape films from back in the 60s and 70s.
@@Assassin199410 I know, I'm just worried they'll screw it up somehow. Because maybe it's me, but aside from Marvel... A lot of their movies just feel bland to me. Like the kind you see, enjoy, and then never watch again. And I feel like Planet of the Apes Trilogy was really special so to follow it up with that would be disappointing.
@@FlyingFocs I'm sure it will be fine.
@@Assassin199410 if they get the same people involved, Matt Reeves, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, sure.
@@FlyingFocs Well, considering that the first movie was directed by someone else and it was great, new directors can take on the Ape films.
I loved the heisei Godzilla series. It's best entries blew me away. And Showa era Gamera is, at best, a guilty pleasure, ideally watched less than sober. But the heisei Gamera trilogy are easily some of, if not THE, best the kaiju genre has to offer. Godzilla will always be the king, but Gamera certainly looked like a contender back in the 90s. Something no other monster has done before or since. As another commenter said, it doesn't make one less of a Goji-fan by acknowledging this.
Gamera the Brave was a lot of fun too, but is a different beast altogether (literally).
The opening for Gamera the Brave gave me chills. It played so well as an indirect conclusion to G3. And the rest of the film seemed to combine the best elements of the trilogy with a bit of the early family friendly works of Spielberg, which works surprisingly well.
I like to think of gamera as a knight while godzilla is the king make sense?
@@haramberoth117 He's the Jack. Like in a deck of cards.
@@alexyoutubechannel8175 no one claimed it was. Only that it did what the heisei films couldn't.
@@alexyoutubechannel8175 In a sense I agree with you. But Goji 1954 isn't exactly representative of the genre it inspired. It's a far more serious movie. Knowing what Godzilla represents, I found the scenes of human suffering difficult to watch in parts. So while Goji 1954 is deeper and more meaningful, I didn't enjoy it as much as the Gamera Trilogy, which is just pure entertainment. Truthfully I would probably still say Godzilla 1954 is the better movie from a cinema buffs perspective, and should be required viewing alongside classics like Citizen Kane and Seven Samurai.
The 2015 short film had me so amped for a new Gamera movie. The effects and the way it was shot were fantastic. I still go back and watch it again from time to time because it's so well done. I'm still hoping they do a full length movie in this fashion.
And even when Toho got a hold of the Gamera trilogy team to tackle Godzilla, they still shackled them to studio demands and limited their creative freedom.
Yep. GMK, while an improvement over Toho's efforts of the time, was a huge step back for Kaneko.
toho just doesn't seem to understand that them not giving creators complete creative control is whats keeping godzilla from doing anything interesting
@WaddleSenpai But then Toho was back into shackling their directors/writers again which resulted in the abysmal Godzilla anime trilogy.
@@androyus The anime trilogy was super experimental. What really weighed it down was how it was super stubborn in getting on with what it wanted to say.
@@androyus I would say it was 50/50 Toho/The director. Cause that guy really had almost pulled a Rian Johnson on the Godzilla series. That Trilogy had a similar path to DisneyWars, in that it started out interestingly enough, but went right off the rails.
Gamera seriously is a cool monster, and while I still love Godzilla more, I don't hate Gamera. I'd actually love to see a Gamera vs Godzilla.
Edit: I know about the Death Battle video lol
They would have to make some pretty serious changes to one of the monsters to pull this off. Death Battle simulated this fight based on the current media of both monsters and basically Godzilla is just way too big for Gamera to beat.
@@kylealabs came here to say this! But you beat me to it. Lol
@@kylealabs If they can supercharge kong to the size he was in that leak with a sick ass beard to fight godzilla, they can do the same to gamera.
@@kylealabs eh depends on which Godzilla they use. Earth godzilla from the netflix series would sneeze and kill gamera lol. But early 90s or early 2000s godzilla would be a decent matchup
I would like to see the two get in a scuffle early on in a movie, but unite together to battle a even greater monster, this would be the best avenue of approach
I was watching your review of Godzilla 1984. And a certain line caught my attention.
"...type of Godzilla movie made once every generation, reflecting the anxieties and hopes of the time period in which it was made."
So it got me thinking: what if you made a video that centered on this line of thought and compared three Godzilla movie? Godzilla 1954, The Return of Godzilla (1984), and Shin Godzilla (2016). Three generations of Godzilla. That would be neat.
And now we have Godzilla Minus One to add to this list!
The trilogy is pretty good. Fine addition to the genre for sure. Still no matter its success it's still getting compared to Godzilla even if it's meant to be positive. Every single time. So no matter what Gamera simply can't escape Godzilla's shadow even at its best. Some things just won't change.
Though to be fair, the 1954 Godzilla movie had more or less popularized kaiju films
Well I'd put quite a few Godzilla movies above 90s Gamera. Even more if I include movies that I simply enjoy more. The problem is whether someone hates Heisei or not or just want people to be aware of the trilogy it's always compared to Godzilla. Cultural dominance of Godzilla is immesurable, Gamera can't escape it even at his best. Doesn't help that Heisei Godzilla is good so whatever gap in quality may be there it may not affect those who simply care more about Godzilla on emotional level. Kind of like with Bond. Every now and then the series formula gets stale and there may be a different movie that takes bigger risks and gets all the attention. But even when the Bond series doesn't release the absolute best of what the genre has to offet at that particular time it's still THE series.
I think it's healthy that it is compared to Godzilla! It shows Gamera is the underdog and that this Heisei trilogy is better than 80% of most Godzilla films.
James Inkton 2 There are a few Godzilla films that cannot be bested and sure that’s one of them. But other then those handful of films, Gamera’s Heisei trilogy did it better. It doesn’t matter if Gamera is a cheap knockoff, he evolved into his own character and became an icon. Same with Godzilla (1998) spawning his own kaiju known as Zilla which people respect.
@@KingKong19100 I agree. Everything is a 'knockoff' of the original. Hell, Godzilla himself is a knockoff to The Beast of 20,000 Fathoms, they even wanted to do claymation but went with a suit for cost reasons.
he deserves a new movie good plot good action scenes he’s honestly one of the forgotten kaijus
I really like to see the heisei gamera trilogy as a successor to the heisei godzilla era, taking everything good about those movies and amplifying it along with adding new elements to the story to make it unique.
Imagine wanting to make a Godzilla film for years but never getting the chance so in order to make a Godzilla film you take a monster that is a clone of Godzilla and make it into a masterpiece trilogy that ends up being better then Godzilla, and then you get to make a Godzilla film known as Godzilla Mothra and fricken King Ghidora, Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. Really enjoying this new video format. Feels even more professional than before, keep this up.
Toho and Daiei may never be able to cross over in Japan, but you know, there's no reason they COULDN'T actually introduce a new version of Gamera to the Legendary Monsterverse. Can you imagine the reaction when someone sends out a distress call at the end of Gozilla vs Kong: "SOS giant turtle has appeared"?
I would bring Gamera back by starting with a Prequel that shows how Gamera came to be. In the next movie I would make a sequel to his last movie made and bring him into the future with the same dark agressive stance like the short teaser that was made no one did anything with. Gamera is marketable but needs a genius that is also a fan.
Be careful what you wish for. Gamera the Brave is what we got instead of following up on the swarm of Gyaos at the end of Revenge of Iris. If anything it set the franchise back a couple steps. Props to the designers of Zedus, though. That character was rendered very well.
6:23 whether people want a movie that has lighter moments or one that just gets darker and darker is purely based on their own taste.
Those aren't qualities of the two franchises that you can compare and claim one to be better for.

Already a lifelong fan of Godzilla, I had heard people rave about this trilogy as some of the finest work in the kaiju genre, and I was surprised when Netflix had it in their disc catalog. Why Godzilla and Gamera have not crossed over is a question I will continue to ask until it happens..
Kong and Godzilla get 2 cross overs and they're much less alike than Godzilla and Gamera.. Not complaining as I love Kong but still.. It sucks, more Gamera!

Honestly, given the blatantly heroic nature of the Legendary Godzilla, and the fact that Gamera has been benevolent in nearly all his appearances, I doubt they two would be anything less than allies if they were to join the Monsterverse together. And a movie featuring Godzilla, Gamera, Kong, and the newest Mothra fighting anything would be awesome. Still disappointed that Pacific Rim didn't get worked in.

One great thing about the Gamera Heisei series was that while it didn't exactly claim to be in continuity with the old movies, neither did it just ignore them. Several times, people talk as if some version of the previous movies really did happen, but somewhere along the line, Gamera began changing, leading up to this trilogy. That was a ballsy move on their part, and it only worked because the rest of the movie was so good and played it so straight that it didn't feel goofy.
Godzilla vs Kong scored unusually high with critics and viewers for a kaiju film. Adding Gamera to the mix only raises the bar.

Forget the 90s films, Gamera's been beating Godzilla at his own game since the get-go. "Gamera vs. Gaos" was the most successful Japanese monster movie of 1967, the year that every studio in Japan put out a monster movie. Ishiro Honda even sent Gamera series' writer Niisan Takahashi a congratulatory card. From that point on, Gamera went on to whip Godzilla's ass at the box office every year. "Gamera vs. Viras" was a sleeper hit and far outperformed "Destroy All Monsters." "Gamera vs. Guiron" outgrossed "Godzilla's Revenge." And "Gamera vs. Jiger" was the most successful Gamera movie to that point. Unfortunately, we don't have any data on how well "Gamera vs. Zigra" did, probably because of the riot that happened in 1971. However, I doubt it touched "Godzilla vs. Hedorah," which was one of the most successful Japanese films that year. At any rate, this is why Toho hates Gamera to this day. They can't deal with the fact this "rip-off" was beating their guy with audiences.
And "Gamera, Super Monster" wasn't an attempt to revive the series. It was a movie contractually forced into production by Tokuma Publishing, who then owned Daiei, because they found the contracts signed by the Gamera makers for an eighth movie meant to be made for 1972. They then refused to give Noriaki Yuasa a proper budget and made him use the stock footage. He tried to shoot new sequences with a new Gamera suit, but the Vistavision matting processing they were using for that film screwed up and made most of the new footage unusable.
When Gamera came back in the 90s, the films themselves may have been more cleverly made than the Godzillas of the period, but they didn't even touch what the Heisei Godzillas were bringing in at the box office (and "Gamera 3" even bombed).
Thanks, Gamera was always a winner, had zero losses, and this is why only Gamera can do what it takes to make wins flawless and masterful, this includes saving kids lives. Gamera saves lives.
@@eewilson9835 What do you mean "zero losses"? He lost once to Barugon, once to Gaos, twice to Jiger, once to Zigra, and once to Legion.
@@ConstantineFurman No please don't say.
At the end of the day Godzilla is and always be the king of the monsters and that's a fact jack!
If I had my way, Gamera would give him a serious run for his money again. I’m sorry, as much as I love Godzilla, the heisei Gamera stomped Heisei Godzilla.
@@veelalynne Box office and worldwide reputation say no. Heisei Godzilla CLEARLY stomped Gamera. Personal tastes aside.
Exactly! Maybe due to fan exposure, that is why so many Gamera fans. I grew up in Phoenix Arizona, USA, and it was always about Godzilla. Gamera, was just hard to capture the attention. While Godzilla had it's silliness, Gamera seem to go beyond that.
@@BenniRoR Of course, knowledge and collection outweigh the quality, obvious.
@@drewstar412 The thing about Gamera is: you've got tons and tons of absolutely silly and dumb movies and a couple of good movies.
With Godzilla you've got many silly movies but just as many good movies and on top of that a couple of masterpieces. That's what sets Godzilla apart from Gamera.
Gamera was a cash grab to begin with. Daei wanted to cash in on the success of the Godzilla movies. It never had anything interesting to tell right from the start of the series. That's not to say that all Gamera movies suck but they were never able to compete on the big stage.
Loved Gamera from the moment I first saw him back in the early 80's!
Starting off the new year with a bang! I love it!
Always a great review!
Gamera was mostly a joke until "Heisei Series" dropped, those Kaiju Films are Great! They combine a great human story with Kaiju fighting action!
I'm a huge Godzilla fan, but this is by far your best video.
I can't remember where I read it, but apparently Kaneko watched the old Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes that ripped on Gamera so they'd know what *not* to do when making the new movies.
I remember stumbling into Gamera during the TMNT craze and not even caring about Godzilla until SpaceGodzilla came out.
I think one reason i think the Gamera trilogy was better than the Heisei Godzilla series is that Kaneko had creative control over the projects. When Kaneko made GMK, that movie felt like the director was under Toho's control. I think Toho is treating Godzilla as a safe cash cow.
Toho did that ever since they made King Kong vs Godzilla.
Yay! A Gamera video! My boy! 🐢
Truer words rarely spoken. Excellent series that I’m always recommending
Loved Kailua movies all my life and to this day attack of legion and revenge of iris are the best I've ever seen!
The special effects are the apex of practical monster effects and feel realer than newer ones, especially in the opening of the third movie.
You should review not only kaiju films but other monster movies like the alien franchise the predator franchise jaws jp tremors etc.
Your channel is the best
I like le how much effort you put on your videos
Well this was a pleasant surprise for the first day of the year.
Great video bruh!
If they ever do another gamera movie, they should have its sequel be Gamera VS Godzilla.
Wow. this was insightful. I might just buy the whole trilogy now.
