What I like about your channel Stuart is how you are genuine about your photography and honest enough to put up images that don't work to explain why they don't work, a much more informative and educational style than certain Lake District Landscape Photogrphers who put up very ordinary shots and try and claim they are exceptional.
Excellent vlog, wish more photographers would show images they think didn't work. Love the image of the gate and snow. Hope that will be an image that makes it into the gallery.
Thanks very much yes the gate shot was one which ended up being a winner once reviewed properly as I was a bit unsure about it when I took it, always nice when that happens!
Borrowdale looking lovely in the snow but can see how it's tricky to shoot. There's almost too much there. Found that in the autumn. Great video mate. On to the next one! Treat yourself to a couple of lens wipes! 🤣
Cheers Alex yeah it was an amazing sight to see all that snow though the location and it’s characteristics made it a bit a trickier than you’d think. The slope is quite severe which isn’t always the best when shooting lone trees
Great vlog Stuart, loved the first image. Really love the honest vlog and your thoughts on why you weren’t happy with some shots. Beautiful videography too. Thanks for taking the time & effort to make these videos. 👍🏻
Great vlog and images Stuart. When I seen that snow had fallen in the Lakes (and checking out webcams in the area) I thought of you and where you'd end up. I laughed at your mothers remark, I used to get the same when mine was still alive. I don't think we ever grow up in our mothers eyes. Cheers.
The first handheld shot closely followed by the third handheld shot gets my vote - the background really helps show off the main subject. Good to see the fails as well Stuart - we are all human ;)
Hi Stuart:Thanks for making this video and sharing your candid feedback on the compositions that didn't quite work. It just goes to show you that even if you have been to a location you only really get to know if fully when you have shot in all type of weather and conditions. Cheers, Keith (Canada)
Another enjoyable video pal. I thought it was interesting that in his video this week, Simon Baxter had similar conditions and also found it a challenge to get the right compositions. I'd assumed that with such amazing snow it would be a doddle to produce amazing image after amazing image, but it seems like its a fair bit more complicated than that!
Thanks mate yeah it looks amazing on camera but without some softening behind and also the slope of the land + the line of the fells in the background it was very tricky to get clean compositions. Most of that time I was shooting either severely uphill or downhill
I think this vlog illustrates perfectly how anyone of us would head out on a shoot, full of creative ideas and then when we get in situe it, the reality doesn't quite match our expectations. I can really relate to that. Saying that, you still managed to capture a few you can be rightly proud of. A couple of those handheld shots were very nice, as you made the background show off your main subject beautifully. I agree about you not getting close enough to that branch over the stream and I'm somewhat surprised you didn't immediately spot that whilst you were there. I suppose a 16:9 crop wouldn't work either to remove a good portion of the dead space in the foreground. No, you're quite right, you should have moved the tripod forward another few feet. Worse still, I bet it's all melted now, but there's still time for some more of the white stuff to fall before this winter is over. Shame hobbyists like myself face the threat of a fine if we go out shooting at the moment, unless we can easily walk to the location from our homes.
Cheers Ian I think with the waterfall shot I’d probably switched off mentally a bit at that point as I’d been there 3 hours by that time, but it was no issue it wasn’t a shot I’d really gone there for anyway and I’d already managed a few I was happy with. If it snows again down there I’ll explore that stream in more detail
Amazing conditions Stuart. I can’t recall seeing Borrowdale looking like that before. We had similar conditions here in West Yorkshire, but none of the prime condition sites are “local” to me and I sadly had to miss out. You certainly got a couple of keepers. On the histogram front the blue channel is the one I find can blow out in the snow. Always keeping my eye on the RGB histograms. Stay safe 😊
Cheers Kev yeah it’s rarely like that down Borrowdale as it’s tucked away from the prevailing wind a bit, especially that spot which sits underneath the mountain. Yeah it’s a good point that people forget about the blue channel, as the camera sees the snow as blue
@@StuartMcGlennon or the red channel in different light. The D850 can blink RGB highlights in play back. I cannot get the Z7 to do so, and have to rely on the histogram itself
Thanks for your video’s. I am still learning photography and I learn just as much from photos that dont work well . Your explanation of why it does not work for you is most helpful.
Still waiting for some snow over here in the East, but lovely to see the Lakes covered in it. Really liked that first one. Simple composition that works really well, and you managed to get some nice separation with the snow directly behind the tree. Good to see I'm not the only one that changes his mind when he sees the image on the big screen!
Cheers Jamie yeah I was happy enough with that first one and a couple of the handhelds - oh yeah we all get those moments I’m certainly happy enough to share them anyway 👍
Stunning looking in the snow Stuart and whilst we've had very little down in Cheshire, it was harder than I thought too shoot (and vlog) in. Those trees looked stunning snow coated and love the honest appraisals. Good music choice btw - I've used that piece also ! Not been out since lockdown and not my full time profession so whilst I feel I can take a few images whilst out for local walks, I'm not sure whether it's in the spirit to also vlog at the same time. Anyway - enjoyed the film as always and thanks for sharing mate.
Cheers mate, I think as far as vlogging goes just do whatever you feel comfortable with, so long as it within guidance, I don’t think there’s a right and wrong with it though as you say for me in my position it’s my job and I’ve no alternative but to keep working through this period.
Cheers Howard yes the handheld ones i probably should have based more video around to be honest, one of those mornings where there's so much going on it was quite hard to pin down where to focus my attention!
An honest vlog that EVERY photographer can relate too. I love what you said about the trees as I tend to think about them like I’m doing a portrait shot, I’m thinking: ‘what’s around the subject does the subject stand out’ etc etc A great vlog mate 🙏👍
Cheers bud yeah we all get a blind to a composition then get home and realise it’s a complete dud! I was happy enough either a couple of the others so if you get one decent one from a shoot it’s job done
Stuart, the "Legend" according to Mali. It makes me feel better that you get it wrong too and you explained why the images don't work. Lesson to us all. Lovely footage to boot. Stay safe.
Really interesting video, Stu and easy to relate too. Good to see you sharing images that don’t necessarily work rather than it always being about the epic shots
Cheers mate yep I’m happy to explain/analyse if I think it’s of some benefit to someone - as you say it isn’t always epic (as you know it rarely is lol)
Your handheld shots were absolutely incredible, reminding me of a short piece I had written about a similar scene.. Sunlight breaks, sharding light through branch And casts upon to melt snow's flake, Pooling teared droplet tumbling Frozen into shadow, Filling furrowed track As ice underfoot to crack, Putting sheath upon blistered leaf Of thorn and brittle bracken heath, Laying naked winter's barren pillage.
Cheers mate yeah it was amazing but also frustrating at the same time, the video doesn’t show it so well but the whole area is on a fair slope so you’re forever struggling to get a ‘clean’ composition which you need with trees
Excellent scenes Stuart. Can I ask please whether you were up on Grange Crags at the start of the video. This vantage point overlooking Castle Crag is one that is on my bucket list to explore. Many thanks in advance. All the best from Dorset.
@@StuartMcGlennon Awesome. Thanks chap. Most kind. In your opinion which is the easiest approach. I was wondering whether the path from Surprise View and then hang a sharp right at the river bridge? Stay safe sir.
@@StuartMcGlennon Ahh, OK. So walk away from the stone rather than park up and then walk towards it. Must be a sight easier to drive too in the snow rather than that hill up to Surprise View. Thank Stuart. Mega gent sir. Stay safe.
Really enjoy you videos, thanks. I like the hand held shot with the gate. Any reason you shot these hand held, or was it a case of couldn't be bothered to get the tripod out again?
Cheers Mike, just that there was plenty of available light so there was little need, what I probably should have done was film more video around them as they were the best ones lol!
Thanks mate, I don't actually though I probably should in those conditions, though surprisingly didn't really suffer much with fogging whilst I was there
You’re far too hard on yourself mate. I’m wondering if you’re always like this or if it’s the addition of vlogging that’s spreading you too thin and distracting you from the photography I know I have found that is the case for myself. Good to see the place covered in snow what an amazing sight that was. Keep at it mate.
Haha yeah I’m always like this 😂 the vlogging definitely stretches you more than you’d like for sure, though I’ll always be self-critical etc but i certainly don’t dwell on it which is the main thing, was happy with a couple of them. Yeah was an amazing sight as you’ll know it hardly ever has snow like that down there just could have done with a wee bit of something to soften the backgrounds
Some cracking images mate, thanks for sharing, also loved the drone footage, I really need to get a drone. Just subscribed, check out my channel if you have a minute.

Wow Stuart - so, so beautiful.

Yes I found this one quite a tough shoot as it virtually never gets snow here! A wonderful spot which is truly wonderful in autumn.
