You show in your video which oil to put into steering(ATF OIL),and,in the first comment line you recommend another type - CHF 11S . Why is that? I have common problems with CHF 11 S and i want to try ATF version. This thread confuses me allot.
My conclusion is: In the workshop programs the only liquid for steering is CHF 11 S .At Servo steering cap it write: ,,ATF OIL ONLY,, .So which type is correct for optimum condition?Thank you
Put ATF red one

not true. from 2000 bmw and mini, went to CHF11S. cheap one is FEBI, green bottle. Very happy, cause synthetic, and more stable viscocity during warmup temp changes. I lost all problems. pentosin is even better. go with GREEN.doesn't pressure steering to make a leak.
Hey Nathan, Good Video, I Had My Water pump, Steering Belts and Hosing replaced this past Christmas, now my steering is tight and turns weird, I feel the mechanics are giving me the run around, I spent $3500 getting all these things fixed, now they want to charge me again for diagnostic and said it might be my steering pump that needs replace, looking at your video I think they're trying to make a bigger fix to get me to spend money, is there anyway I can check to make sure I don't have a steering pump replacement issue
Perfect video. Worked perfectly. Stopped the whining and steering feels new again. Thanks.
As always instructional videos of high class! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with these motors and saving us thousands of dollars!
Short and to the point. Keep it up sir
Very true!
The shaft will break!
The pulley will be fucked!
Listen to this guy, he spoke on everything that is happening.
I'm definitely going to try that method my E46 is very hard to turn on low speed feels like an old truck 🚚 now kkkkk Thank you will revert
Some of them may use CHF-11S or 202. Those are the one that never should have ATF in the power steering. Using the wrong stuff may even cause the rack to leak.
Jup and CHF is PSF👍🏻
Baby oil works great too! Hahaha. 3 years ago my e60 sprung a hydraulic leak along I-40 near William's, Az and Safeway was the only store open so I went inside and grabbed a few bottles of regular ol' baby oil, poured it in there and it's worked fine ever since! No leaks or anything! Lol!
Tim Crosby whattttt?
@@LegitMystic yeah regular old baby oil is Mineral oil. Been using it as clutch fluid in my dirt bikes for over 15 years and never had a single problem with it. I put it my 530i in May of 2017 and it's still in there and Ive not had any problems with it. No leaks and everything works great.
Oh come on
You were getting baby oil for some frakey stuff
@veryslyfox you're most likely right but it's been over 5 years and over 50,000 miles now and I still haven't had any issues with it. Haven't added a drop and everything still works great. Maybe it will go 10 years with no problem?
@@timocrosby dude just replace oil every 2 years, its not that hard, takes 5 min.
Great job and good advice thank you so much from Sydney Australia 😊
Love your videos man! Thanks!!!
Thank you, really needed this
I've been using redline atf fluid for my e36 and it seems to be the best type you can buy.
thanks. looks like I just sprung a leak in my 1998 328I, I'll look for that stuff.
Anthony Dlugos My uncle who has 5 old school bimmers introduced it to me, bmw enthusiasts’ favorite and easy to buy from most major retailers at a fair price
@@saryn1829 i have a question in the video the guy is talking about putting transmission oil to the power steering right? so transmission oil is better the power steering oil? for power steering
@@elcompa8000 yes the power steering system takes atf (automatic transmission fluid)
@@elcompa8000 what’s your make and model?
My steering has been scretching when i turn the wheel it sounds like a rusty door hindge. Couldnt find the powersteering fluid goes. atleast now i can check & see first thansk for the video
Same problem w me, bought mine used so have no clue what the last owner did 😭 have u ever found a solution for it ? I seen it’s been a year now
My 91' E34 use the green stuff, CHF 7.1 mineral oil, it's marked on the cap of PS reservoir.
I had the CHF 11S PSF at home, which is the synthetic version, so I used that.
I read on line, not supposed to.
Soon, I think flush the PS system, fluid looks dirty.
Cheers!
👍😄
I have a 2004 bmw X3 2.5i with the M54 engine I've used Pentosin Hydraulic fluid/Power steering fluid Ch11 for my Power steering I've had no issues currently
So glad I watched this video!
Hahah I wasn't expecting the "you can see it leakin' down in derrrrrrrrrrrrr, and down in derrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... " xd
'Murrica. Git ur dunnnn.
🤣
I really do appreciate this man, very detailed. Thank you.
nice vid very helpful
Thank you Nathan, I was confused about the brand to replace my fluid in my e46. I'm restoring a 2002 325i and was replacing my oil and did an inspection and found the fluid low. Didn't see any signs of leaking.
I got quick question when i open my power steering cap the fluid is brown any idea
Carlos Gonzalez I have a 2002 325i bmw and the liquid is brown too, if you figure out what’s wrong let me know please !
@@ChachaChachacc whats your snapchat
noturdawg your fluid is probably too old. You might to service that and change it.
how do you know when its full where is the full mark and what is the big bowl next to it with a screw off top? it's not even in the manual? 202 530i
The big bowl next to it with the screw off top is the engine oil filter, needs 36 socket to undo
Your video is about power steering fluid but you talk about using transmission fluid are they the same?
Much Appreciated Video Sir
Thank you. Glad I checked 1st., now I know what to use.
theuniqueldy meowwww 😻😻
I watched a dozen of these videos and yours is by far the best
Thanks a lot Nathan. It really was a great help for me and I hope for others too.
No problem thanks for watching the videos it's greatly appreciated
I have a '85 528 and just took it into Valvoline and asked them to pay attention to the power steering fluid - wonder if they put the wrong fluid on there? It's moaning like a Castilian whore 😢should I pump it out? What's the name brand of the replacement fluid?
Thank you. Very helpful. Especially the Castrol and pump tips.
My e90 335i uses hydraulic fluid CHF 11S for power steering. Transmission oil for power steering? Confused.....
Yes I have a 98 750il, with the V12, and it calls for that CHF(the green can) as well. That sh is expensive so I'm hunting down my leak before throwing that in there again. Lol. Good luck.
so for clarification, the reservoir that clearly states “ATF OIL ONLY” is for power steering fluid only??
I know. Mine says it too!
Bmw has made everything so complicated, i mean why couldnt they label it Power steering oil only? Why Atf (automatic transmission fluid)
Hi Nathan thamks to this video I just filled my car with the same ATF and it stopped that horrific noise when turning the wheel left or right. Do you have a video on Transmission speed sensor replacement?
Thanks you for your channel, need help, my 2008 535 iX i have no power don’t feel the turbos , if i step on the pedal no power , if i just tap the gas pedal drive normal. No power . Inpa says 12540 error turbos were replaced 5 years ago.
I always add 2oz of at205 to keep things lubricated. great videos.
Lol I was just about to add it to mine after flushing the fluid
Very helpful thanks for the video
2000 BMW M Roadster, the 1998-2000 3.2L engine. What power steering fluid do I use for a top up? I am leaking a bit which needs to be addressed, but to not blow out the pump, I want to top it up. Owners manual doesnt even give any info and this video has 2 recommendations. Also, any luck/recommendation on lucas stop leak type stuff? Does that work? Ruin the system? I cant find much on this car, its all Z3 stuff, which I dont know if its the same setup.
Hello Nathan I have a 2006 BMW 525xi power steering went out while driving
So automatic transmission fluid instead of power steering fluid ?
Excellent just did my E83 X3. No noises anymore ✌🏼
I turned my engine on right after the steering wheel. Got looser but the sound still there
I have a 07 X3 what kind of power steering fluid did you use
Hi Nate Chris here from Jamaica quick question my poor steering has a song it sounds like it's running out of fluid but the fluid container has fluid in it BMW 530i 2007
The reservoir is full but I hear whining and noises as I turn, the reservoir is leaking just like in this video how do I fix it?
Hi my x5 e53 stops all pulleys except the crank pulley when turning full left or right
Where I Can find ur guys give me the direction pls
Hey partner so i am using transmission fluid for the sterring fluid?? Not a stering fluid . I will put transmax from castrol like you suggest into the steering fluid reservoir? I will use the synthetic but i want to make sure that i am using transmission fluid in the steering fluid reservoir because my x3 steering seems a bit more tight than before so im gonna service the reservoir but i want again to be certain that i am.outting Transmission fluid from catrol into the resevoir??? Please let me know thanks. Anthony
my e38 has a leak from that power steering reservoir & the previous owner had some random power steering fluid bottle in the trunk looks like something he got from a gas station. hopefully when I put the proper fluid it stops leaking
Thanks for the videos, learning alot
My e46 has a super super bad creeking noise when I turn the more I turn the louder it gets idk what the issue is
Okay so I just got a 2001 X5 and I don't know there's no paperwork with it there's no book I'm not sure exactly what kind of engine I have it would be nice to know can you help me out on it where do I where can I find this information out on I have the title but it doesn't say I keep hearing the different size engines and I'm just not clear add one more question you use transmission fluid for the power steering and for the transmission that that's correct
Hi, question: I don't mean to sound stupid, but I want to make sure I really understood you: We're adding transmission fluid (oil) to the power steering reservoir on a BMW X5 ?
Yes up until 2006 on x5 then it takes pentosin
@@NathansBMWWorkshop Thanks for the reply/information.
Would this be good my my manual 2003 bmw e46 zhp 330i?
thank you for the good information you provided
How do you drain all of the fluid from the system not just the resivor
no real need. just do the flush from the reservoir several times several days apart, eventually you will have most of the old stuff out. Or you could jack the car up and disconnect one of the lowers hoses. but its not really necessary.
So I should put transmission fluid in the power steering fluid well?
every car is different and has different options, check ur specifications or ask ur dealer, he can tell u what u need.
So how am I supposed to change the filter??
did i miss how to actually service it? like what plug to drain? and what potential failure points to look for?
I bet you thought you had clicked on a Scotty Kilmer video. lol
Yeee haa just subbed BRILLANT.
Is this stuff good for a z3
Should the reservoir always be full or just enough for expansion issues? Forgive me for my lack of knowledge.
Up to the second line max
But yes any liquid that comes with your car always should have it anytime & Everytime
What the best oil dexron ll or dexron lll for power streeng bmw e36?
Today my stepmoms 02' 330i apparently was in motion with very hard right turns then smoke started coming from right side under the hood. Pulled over and towed home. Upon inspection the PS resorvoir was empty, then while cleaning up the mess found several slits at the 90° bend on the bottom resorvoir return hose.
*What other type of damage could have been to the power steering system at this point?
*I would like to purchase all replacement parts and fluids at once but not sure if ill need more than the new hoses and new resorvoir.
let shop take care of it if ur not sure what parts u need.
My wife Changed power steering pump and she put regular power steering fluid in but it’s only been running a week not turning now what do I need to do
Thanks for sharing. Sending you an email with q quick video of my issue. Sounds like this video should resolve the issue.
So how do you fix it?
Nathan, you are the great
If that’s my atf oil reservoir where’s my power steering fluid reservoir or are they the same thing in this model?
Same question for me
They are different
The ATF reservoir / power steering are the same I think..
The ATF reservoir is connected to the power steering pump..
What’s that cylindrical thing to the left of it called?
You don’t fill transmission fluid from the bonnet so defiantly power steering, says atf oil only on it
How do you tell exactly what kind of engine you have when you buy a car with no book
do a quick vin check on google. there are many free website that tell you the basics including the engine type, if you pay 10 or 20 $ they tell you every single option about the car
I'm confused because the fluid you show to use says Tranny Fluid , so that's what to use to fill the Power Steering ??? I have a 08 535xi and it just started whining until running warm . ALSO HOW DA HECK DO I CHECK MY TRANNY FLUID ??? I know how to check da engine oil it's digital but Not Tranny I don't see No dipstick either? PLEASE NATE HELP I REALLY REALLY APPRECIATE IT THANKS FOR YOUR TIME .
@NathansBMWWorkshop so for a 2001 showing ATF only on the power steering reservoir, which product should I use. The CHF11S is for 2006 and newer. Which would you recommend (amazon link ?) for the 2001 5 series ? Thanks
Same concern, I stuck some dex atf in mine but now I'm worried if I put the wrong one, everyone is so vague about this
Thanks
Sure glad i watched ur vid. Was fixen to fill power steering with over counter psf. Thanks nathan
I think my pump went bad. It’s very hard to steer at slow speeds & there’s no circulation in the Reservoir. Pretty sure I need to buy a replacement. Is that the case?
Sr I don’t hear you saying the limit for filling it, fill it to what limit
Anyone know if I can use CHF 11s in my BMW that has a power steering cap that says AFT ONLY?
You can but it will More than likely leak
how many liters did you put in?
I have Valvoline maxlife left over from my transmission service, and I know from your other videos that you like it, so why did you use Castrol?
Probably because BMW recommends castrol oil
What is the Petrol? (Unleaded 95 or 98? of BMW 5 Series e39 model 1999
Yeh, good informative video
Great job man!! More videos por favor 😎
So my 1996 E36 320i has a metallic look to it but when you put your finger in it it comes out clearish with a little yellow to it. Should I purge the system at put dex3 in?
But why was it leaking!?
Does it need to be filled up to the second line
Yes max
So you have to out ATF in the power steering fluid correct? I have 2006 325i 4dr
Thanks help out alot
Will this happen to a 2000 bmw as well?
What about Pentosin CHF-11S? 1990+ and newer BMWs use Pentosin CHF-11S. No?
I just replaced all break pads and now have break light on on the dash. How do i reset it so the light goes out
Any thoughts
Thank for the info going to top up my e36..
Is the e36 a 325i, sorry I have no idea
2001 BMW z3 2.5i Roadster, I used the same ATF fluid, it’s working fine. Can you tell me your opinion, please
Hey my car has a whining noise when turning at low speeds reading on forums apparently this will help? i drive an e87
Nice video as always. I'm from the EU and the only Castrol's fluid I could find was the Transmax multi-vehicle dexron 3, for my 97 520ia. Can you please recommend any other fluid ,since you said that the dexron isn't ok to use please? Tnx.
Thanks for sharing. I have a BMW X 3. When oil change maintenance is being done , etc can there be a way to damage or have a leaking pipe or so? I was driving all of a sudden steering wheel became hard I couldn’t turn my wheel??? What do you recommend it think it could be?
could be low fluid or power steering pump could be dead.
I used a number of trans.fluids, changed reservoir, hoses, bought a new steering pump and rebuild a steering rack. My steering wheel is still hard to turn.I guess that's the way it's suppose to be.
enjoy it, new cars dont have that great road feeling :) makes ur hands hurt, but road feeling is amazing.
Hmmmm my BMW 325XI steering is really hard to move still. My first thought was replacing the fluid, which I did. I did it then moved the steering wheel, then replaced fluid again. Still stuck, IDK whats up.
Great video, I'm from the UK, I have a BMW 2l diesel convertible, just wondering what fluids need replacing, it's a 6 speed manual and the oil and filters have been changed at 13k mile intervals as I don't believe in BMW 20k mile intervals. Fuel filter changed at 50k, pollen filter changed every 15k, it's had the Forte engine flush and diesel fuel system treatment just done at 91k miles. I bought the car with full service history 19 months ago with 41k on the clock, so I've gone 50k miles since, South of France twice, Belgium and Amsterdam.
just change it. on my X5 cap shows CHF11S only... Pentosin makes one.
oil change, oil filter, air filters, power steering oil, brake oil every year before winter. And fuel filter, engine air filter and differencial and transmission fluid every 2 years... u can skip transmission oil change and do it every 5 years, depends on how much u drive... oil is oil and it brakes down, so nothing is lifetime....
Could you please explain more briefly the cause of power steering pump failures on e46 due to overheating. I didn't understand that exactly from your video.
Thank you in advance.
+Alexey Sopov Most of it is people using the wrong fluid , you can only use transmission fluid not chevy power steering fluid in it, also there is a filter in the bottom of the fluid resevoir
+Nathan's DIY Garage You mean using wrong steering fluid is a cause of steering pump overheating and failure. Is pentosin CHF okay or it's better to replace it with the oil from video?
Any trans fluid should work, you just cant use the clear power steering fluid you would put in a chevy or ford
+Nathan's DIY Garage got it. Thank you for the explanation! ))
No problem
hi will it work for 2009 e70 3.0l na 6 cylinder?
i had to pull all the power stering lines from my car and now i cannot remember if the cooler hooks into the bottom of the pump or if cooler lines got to rack and pinon head
If the power steering its making a noise it means it's bad then?
I have a 2002 e53 X5 3.0l petrol and the Steering is stiff and low speed, especially in reverse and I am currently using Dex 2 and it is leaking. What power steering fluid should I use ??
ATF if it says on cap, if it doesnt say anthing than ask in dealership.
Some of these use ATF but if it is not that get CHF-11S. You will know if CHF-11S is in there because it is green. CHF-202 is compatible with CHF-11S and is less expensive sometimes. I have heard that there is a green sticker on the ones that are supposed to use CHF-11S.
What if its black/brown?
@justarandomguy3969 there should be name on reservoar cap saying ATF or CHF only.... depends on car.
Did I miss how to change the fluid or the filter? I didn't see that in the video. How do I get the filter out? thanks.
Hello the filter is in the bottom of the tank, you must replace the whole tank, and break the line loose on the pump to removal all the fluid, this is done from under the car.
Not being rude but you just talked about changing it and didnt really go through the part of actually emptying nor filling. I'll just whip out manual
