I have the 1.2, it’s a chunky piece of kit but the image character is so special it’d take more than size for me to reconsider. I have the Sigma 85 1.4 DN, when I look at them side by side the difference is stark! But with the longer focal length at 85 1.2 seems excessive, 1.4 is all you need. But the 35 1.2... it’s like that girl you met that you can never get out of your head; she had a walk, a smile, a giggle that made the world seem more beautiful. I’ll never replace the 35 1.2, it’s a classic.
Indeed, from all the sample images I've seen the Sigma 35mm 1.2 seems to produce some beautiful images. At the top of my dream lenses list, along with the 105mm 1.4 - they may be a bit out of my budget currently but one day I'll be able to get them...for now I can just enjoy watch videos/reviews about the lens and look at sample images. Interesting you say about the 85mm DG DN having a different look to it. I think I prefer the rendering from the original 85mm 1.4 (the big one!)...seems to have more punch/pop to it. Not that the new DG DN version is bad, it still looks like one of the best 85mm in the E Mount system, especially considering that it beats Sony's significantly more expensive G Master in almost every way...including size, surprisingly for Sigma. That could be why it doesn't have the rendering character of something like the 35mm 1.2...Sigma's priority for the 85mm DG DN could have been to find a good balance between performance, price and size whereas the 35mm 1.2 was clearly focussed on image quality, right through to the widest aperture. Would be interesting if Sigma releases an f/1.2 portrait prime in the same vein as the 35mm - with image quality as the priority, even if it ends up a lot bigger and 50+% more expensive than the 85mm DG DN. Perhaps, having that 85mm already on sale they could come up something even more unique...such as a 90mm f1.2 with an STF filter/coating (would be cool if the STF filter could be removeable too). I read some rumours that Sigma will soon announce a 50mm f1.2 so that's good news, that they are still committed to f/1.2 full frame lenses.
I use a Sigma 35mm f1.4 on a A7III and I'm very happy with it. The new SONY will be definitely a bit sharper, smaller and lighter, but I don't feel the need to give up the Sigma, which has very pleasant bokeh. In general, the Sigmas render the out of focus areas a bit different than other lenses and I really like it (more than Sony or even Zeiss).
If you want small size, go Zeiss ;)... I mean the Zeiss 35 F2.8. Which is stellar as well! Nothing is better for me on vacation trips and street photography. Very invisble, so people don't "act" when they see you.
Taiwan filled preorders on the Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM at the beginning of Feb. I've had mine for 2 weeks and love it. If you go budget and buy the f/1.8 lens or the new Sigma 35mm f/2, never pick up the GM lens and use it. You'll hate yourself for not spending the extra bit of cash to buy it. Is it worth twice as much as either of those lenses? Most definitely! If you're thinking about going with the Zeiss lens or the Sigma 35mm f/1.2, proceed at your own peril. The 35mm f/1.4 GM is an amazing lens!

@@AaronBrownStudios unfortunately sarcasm doesn’t translate well via text. But yeah, Sony is one of the only companies that hands out new gear to a TON of youtubers opposed to the other, more conservative companies. The a7s3 launch is an example, with nearly 40-50 youtubers reviewing the gear all at once. In the end it benefits sony and really hurts the youtuber with so much competition and less views compared to standard videos
there are alot of good lenses as a standard with modern lenses but one of the fun things with vintage lenses, there were alot of 'bad' lenses that now are considered very characterful or artistic, alot of fun to be have with those.
In my country (Australia), the Sigma is a long long way cheaper than Sony GM, the price difference make Sigma almost 1/3 cheaper than Sony GM. I am happy to give both a miss since I am using the Sigma 40mm F1.4, which cost about 60% of Sony GM 35mm f1.4.
Open the Sigma 1.2 and love the lens but hate how big it is. I may trade up to the G master. It wasn’t available at the time I purchased the sigma lens. The reason I chose the Sigma lens was for low coma issues in low light compared to the existing Sony/Leica offering from Sony, not covered in your review. Also I would have liked to see a close focus comparison. My sigma 1.2 is almost a macro lens for close focus and yet my 24mm G master does not focus close and I am always attaching extension rings, which is annoying. I hoping the 35 G master is capable of better close focus. I just did a search, .27mm minimum focus compared to .3 for the Sigma 1.2, so very similar.
35mm is my second favorite focal length, behind 85mm If money weren't a factor, I would get the G-master. I'm currently trying to get the funds together for the Sigma f/2.
Agreed. Many consider a 35 to be the true "normal" lens. Some of the great Nat Geo photographers covered the world often carrying only a couple Leica rangefinder bodies, a 21, a 35 and a 90, all in a very small bag.
Terrific review. I would go with the 1.4 as I use 35's in all sorts of ways and the smaller size definitely makes it a more versatile lens for me. This is your second review with a different feel. Less technical, easy and breezy. Looks like you are maybe adjusting your style a little to attract folks who are newer to the hobby, getting a wider audience. Any truth? I do look at bokeh before buying a lens and color aberrations so would look to other sources for that info.
I'm so happy you decided to compare the new Sony with the Sigma 1.2. That was my first thought when it came to comparing something with the new Sony lens. I should add that this video was so incredibly horrible at comparing anything and the quality of the photos were so incredibly bad that it made any sort of comparison completely moot. There was almost no substance in this video and a complete failure at doing what it was intending to do.
I had the Zeiss 1.4 and i really liked its optical Performance and image Quality. My experince with 24mm GM. Its a perfect lens in terms of Quality, Image, Weight, light, compact and very sharp even wide open. Zeiss is an old lens, heavy, big and image quality not like the GM one. I ordered it but in EU is quite expensive.
Great video, I also love the podcast. Hope you are having fun with the Bernie Book. I live int he Philly area too so it is pretty cool to have a creator like you in the area. Thanks for the inspiration to make a podcast and a youtube channel too. Thanks once again.
11:06 Galdang - the noise at ISO2500 on the R4 - really pronounced. I keep seeing low light examples here and there of the R4 compared to the R3 and am glad I went with the R3. Another possibility is that this was originally shot under exposed and then was pushed in lightroom. That could create a bit of noise. Anywho - glad Jared reviewed this lens. Pretty excited about it.
Jared hi - would you say, given the IS0 capabilities of the A1 (and most new cameras) it's worth trading in the Sigma for the Sony? I'm still torn. I have the Sigma but thinking of trading in. Will be using it for filming as well.
Will we get a review of the Olympus ED 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO Lens (and possibly with the 2x teleconverter?) when it comes out? All photos on web are of birds and wildlife, would like to see some action photography like when you went to the Atlantic City Airshow with the Sigma 150-600.
ok... Apparently there is also a Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM, which is for Full Frame Cameras, but not for mirrorless? What happens if i put this lens onto an A7III? Is it out of Focus?
mmm very expensive... both great i loved all shots form the 1.2 and the GM. But i think i will have ot take a look at the 1.8 variants (Sony, Samyang, Sigma f/2), it is just a hobby... but when i win the lotery... well it would be the GM i think (just for 1/3 stop it is a lot of bulkyness)
I will wait for the Sony, Sigma was the one I was going to go for but its size and the surfaces on the lens and hood just show marks like crazy as can be seen on your copy, not a biggy bug sigma lenses never seem to wear well
I would love to hear your thoughts comparing it to the 40mm Zeiss Batis. And in general with all the GM lenses compared to Tampon or Zeiss Batis - other than depth of field - how big is the difference really in low light conditions between F2 and F1.4. That kind of review like at a concert would be fantastic! :)
Agreed about the lens hoods. Not only a certain protection against flare but also helps against an accidental impact, big or small. I spent more than 15 years as a freelance and staff shooter for Chicago-area newspapers and in crowded situations, or moving very fast with one or two bodies that weren't exactly staying glued to my side as I hustled, the hoods took some jolts. Of course, they were all screw-on metal hoods on the Nikon MF lenses of the era but after a few years EVERYbodys hoods were worn a little or a lot on the leading edge and we often had shallow dents in the hoods from bumps and bruises.
@@anthonyc1883 Many years ago I fell down some slippery rocks when I was carrying my Hasselblad and it hit a rock, the kompendium and the filter was damaged, $120 + $630, but the lens and the camera was ok :) Remember in overcast weather the light comes from every where so it is not only in sunshine that a lens hood or kompendium are needed ;) I allways use lens hoods :)
I'm a Nikon shooter, but I'm seriously considering getting an a7C and the 35 f/2 as a lightweight "bring everywhere" combo. Lovely to see the these days one can get a tiny setup without all the quality loss associated with crop sensors.
35 1.4 for $1600, or 35 1.2 for $1500. Let me think. Gee you know I’m gonna have to go with the one that has a better image quality for less money. If I wanted convenience I would be using a smart phone. If I’m committing to toting around a full frame body all day long, I’m going to get the best damn lens there is. Sigma 35 1.2 all the way. If Sony wants to sell these to people other than GM only users, they are going to have to drop that price point down to 1450 or lower just like the 24 GM. As long as sigma is producing a superior image for less money, most users are going to go with it.
Only issue with the sigma is the barrel distortion that's pretty noticeable. Other issue i believe gerald undone covered is that though it's a 1.2 it actually gathers less light, final issue is it's massive sign, horrible flare compared to the Gmaster.
Which of the three would you go with and why?
I might be biased, but I prefer to use the glass of the manufacturer, so I would go with the Sony's :)
The wonderfully compact Sony GM obviously!
Sony-Zeiss Distagon 35/1.4 (FE), because specific Zeiss color rendering and optical design. P.S. I don’t need a super sharpness.

You don't say. It's almost like this is a new lens that will be releasing soon at a certain date and they gave some UA-camrs a review copy.
Guys.. seriously. Did it not come across in what I said, that this was obvious? Of course there’s an embargo. That’s what’s crazy; how many people all released this at once. Sometimes it’s like a few maybe. But this time was like 20 people that I saw. I don’t need told that there’s a time when they’re allowed to release their reviews. Of course there is. You’re not saying something we don’t already know lol
1:32 USE the lens hood, unless you want flare like.. this guy!! (Some pictures of Manny)
Love the review as always , great job 👏 Looking forward to order this baby !!
What about Zeiss 35mm f1.8?
The embargo is real. Its like they all drop the same video at the exact same time.
there are alot of good lenses as a standard with modern lenses
but one of the fun things with vintage lenses, there were alot of 'bad' lenses that now are considered very characterful or artistic, alot of fun to be have with those.
Make a small lens people, it's going to sell like hotcakes.
The 35 f/2 is tiny
In my country (Australia), the Sigma is a long long way cheaper than Sony GM, the price difference make Sigma almost 1/3 cheaper than Sony GM. I am happy to give both a miss since I am using the Sigma 40mm F1.4, which cost about 60% of Sony GM 35mm f1.4.
The 40mm is sharper than both. I have one as well.
I’m pretty happy with the tiny Sony 35mm 1.8! But damn this is a great lens it seems
Just try the Sony 35mm f1.4 GM on my old Sony A6000 and it's fantastic. Lightweight is a plus for me
Terrific review.
Is there ever any substance to any of his videos though?
Most important question for me Is it worth to change from 35mm 1,4 Zeiss to GM?
I'm excited about the book, not sure fun is how I would explain it though. Some stress but sure, it's fun ish.
Gotta compare this with the Ssamyang 24mm 1.8
Hi Jared. what do you think of the Samyang 35mm 1.8. at the cheaper end of the market?
No mention of the sigma art 35mm 1.4? For lower budget
Yeah. I also thought that is much Noise at 2500. Actually i am used to iso Level of my a7iii that seems clearly better
I would love to get a hands on this baby! Thanks for the video.
Jared hi - would you say, given the IS0 capabilities of the A1 (and most new cameras) it's worth trading in the Sigma for the Sony? I'm still torn. I have the Sigma but thinking of trading in. Will be using it for filming as well.
The fro is still strong! I need a 35mm in my bag. This is certainly interesting!
Why did you ignore the Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art E-Mount?
I agree -btw.for this price you could have Sigma 35 1,4 +Sigma 50 1,4 art e- mount versions both;-)
Jared, how can a lens with 1.4 aperture open up to 1.2 aperture?
By turning the aperture ring. Or if 1.4 was the *maximum* aperture, you'd use a powered cutting tool of sorts.
what about the sony 35mm f1.8 ??????? Would have thought that you would have mentioned it.
Pulling out the Budweiser frogs...damn I'm old...
I have the SONY FE 35MM F/1.4 ZA ZEISS DISTAGON T* LENS worth upgrading and why ?
ok... Apparently there is also a Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM, which is for Full Frame Cameras, but not for mirrorless? What happens if i put this lens onto an A7III? Is it out of Focus?
Urgh, I'll reconsider going with Sony now.
Missing that 35mm GMaster before was a deal-breaker.
Thanks Jared.
There you have your Like! nice vid Jared.
So the sigma 35mm 1.4 art on Sony e, is out of the picture?
It has only 2 advantages: price and availability, otherwise it's a much worse lens in every single aspect.
Be careful when sniffing those razor sharp lenses 😅
Paging Eric Clapton.
What about rokinon 35mm 1.4?
mmm very expensive... both great i loved all shots form the 1.2 and the GM. But i think i will have ot take a look at the 1.8 variants (Sony, Samyang, Sigma f/2), it is just a hobby... but when i win the lotery... well it would be the GM i think (just for 1/3 stop it is a lot of bulkyness)
Thanks for the review
I will wait for the Sony, Sigma was the one I was going to go for but its size and the surfaces on the lens and hood just show marks like crazy as can be seen on your copy, not a biggy bug sigma lenses never seem to wear well
I am a tattoo artist and take photos of my tattoos within a studio.
Would you recommend the sony 35mm 1.4 gm or the 50mm 1.2 gm? Thanks 🙂
@Studio Sage thanks for the reply, I’ve ordered it 😁
who won the camera giveaway?
I love your presets, man ...they just don't work with my lightroom 6 disc version unfortunately so I can't buy yours
the Zeiss Distagon 35mm for sony is phenomenal. so this one has to beat it.
with the beard... definitely.
does the sigma focus as fast and accurate as the GM??
Why do Sony not create 1.2 lens?
:D I have never ever used automatic aperture ! You are so right about lens hoods, allways use the lens hood.
Awesome material dude 😎
Which would you choose between the 24 gm or this 35 though?? I literally just got the 24gm last week
Why would you choose? They're different focal lengths and only one suits a specific situation best. Up to you.
I wonder why you did not compare the new G lens with the older distagon since they are E mount and they have the same aperture /1.4
Thanks for this. I have the 24mm F1.4, do i need this??
If you don't know you probably don't need 24mm either.😊
omg bro !!! thx for sharing it !! useful video !!!!
You went to make pictures of Sanders?!
Thank you Sir! The file download doesn't seem to be working.
Perfect for the A7C in "tourist" mode or throwing into a bag when you wouldn't have taken something larger.
I'm a Nikon shooter, but I'm seriously considering getting an a7C and the 35 f/2 as a lightweight "bring everywhere" combo. Lovely to see the these days one can get a tiny setup without all the quality loss associated with crop sensors.
Is there a Frank Black preset in the works for the FroPack?
Another fantastic video!
Sony needs to produced some 1.2 lenses like canon is doing. I hope sigma makes an 85 1.2 for sony so I can trade or sell my 85 gm for it
Only issue with the sigma is the barrel distortion that's pretty noticeable. Other issue i believe gerald undone covered is that though it's a 1.2 it actually gathers less light, final issue is it's massive sign, horrible flare compared to the Gmaster.
@@AllCarsUnited sigma had are issues with their 105 1.4 as well. They need to work on their coatings.
Lol i bet sony is selling 3x more compared to emount sigma
The Canon EF 35mm f1.4L II USM is considerably more expensive, so no, the Sony is not overpriced.
sigma 35mm f2 vs sony 35mm f1.8?
Sword...that's a sweet BattleAxe!
I wont change my sony 35mm 1.8 for this. It is so lightweight and convenient, I dont understand why is not included in the review
Is a nice lens but not in the same league as the 1.2 and 1.4 at all
@@shaolin95 i know, but if the sigma f2 is included i think is in the league
@@TheThinFrame he is pushing sigma lenses. Isn’t that clear
@@photosblossomsau1624 Why? Sorry, what I meant was rubbish. He uses Sony of his stills, so why would he deliberately bat against Sony?
@@doghouseriley4732 bcs sigma pays him? Idk if that is true just answering why would he.
Keeping the bad boy 1.2 but that GM is a sweet compromise.
