My Genuine Concern: Reusable Canning Lids & Gaskets or NOT?

  • DISCLAIMER: I have sincere, legitimate questions, and if you're a canner.....you should too. These are my opinions and thoughts. I am just voicing them here under my first amendment right to do so. Let me know your thoughts down below. And if you purchased these non reusable gaskets with your lid purchase in 2021, do you still have them? Did you contact Harvest Guard for a replacement? Did they notify you of the issues? I would love to know. Thank you, God Bless and I sincerely wish Brad the best of luck and hope any new ownership treats their customers well and is successful.

Yep. I'm one who expects 6-8 uses to actually be 6-8 uses! I would not know a good gasket from a bad one. I bought them for the first time in 2021.

And I can regularly but never have used the reusable lids. I bought them in case I couldn't get the other ones. But I was thrilled they would last a long time. I wouldn't know either how the gaskets are supposed to be use after use.

Also, if this is his decision why not send them out with 8 gaskets since the reusable ones should work at least 8 times? Why only 3?

These are very sincere questions that we should all be asking, thank you for asking them on the consumers' behalf!! I'm concerned by what the email said and the approach that Harvest Guard has taken. Why aren't the 40,000 customers being notified of the deficit in product quality? Why is he selling addresses instead of letting all of his customers know. He already knows who bought the lesser product. Thank you for not just taking the bait of clout of being an "influencer" and instead asking questions that really matter. This is FOOD SECURITY we are talking about. I bought a large number of Harvest Guard lids/gaskets in 2021. This would have been my first time using reusable lids/gaskets. Haven't used any yet, (in fact they are still in their unopened shipping box), because I received a windfall blessing of standard lids. Now I don't even want to use them, because I can't tell the difference in gaskets since I have nothing to compare to! Have received no notice at all from HG. A batch recall notice (email is fine)would be nice so we newbies could tell which ones we have. I open jars that I canned a month ago, so they could have too. Now I'm wondering what my recourse is, they weren't cheap to purchase.

Hmmm....i must have a mix of gaskets. Only one recently was stretched oddly after use and I'm quite sure none of my gaskets have been used more than a couple times so far. I've had no jars fail/spoil on rhe shelf. I agree that the website should be updated with new info. I will continue to use the lids/gaskets and inspect them as I knew I'd need to as the white lids have a lifetime use but the gaskets were meant to have limited use, reusable 6-8 times. Truly, the one that was stretched out was extremely obvious. I'm more inclined to be upset at the shutdowns forced upon us all which so devastatingly impacted businesses, individuals, mental health, etc. The company should be forthright about the Harvest Guard lids, yet I'm not ready to discontinue their use. Happy canning.

I have read Harvest Guard and Tatler brands for reusable lids with gaskets for canning. In your message you refer to Harvest Right. I know that Harvest Right sells freezer dryers. So I’m wondering if you typed in the wrong company name or if you were actually referring to Harvest Right. Thank you for clarifying for me.

Heather you are 'badass' ! Thank you so much for looking out for us & protecting us due to your good heart, your sharp observance and deduction abilities, and your wise assessment of the situation with the non-reusable component of the Harvest Right lids. Dare I say they may have earned the nickname 'Harvest Wrong'? Thank you for calling a spade a spade & shedding light and truth on a dark murky Harvest Right lid situation. I'm so glad I didn't stock up on this brand during the pandemic.

I am so grateful that I only canned a few jars in a batch with these lids for fear these would fail. 2020-2021 I am grateful for Pur and ForJars to coming to the rescue as I even noticed the quality with Ball and Ker lids went down during this time. Thank you Heather for being an advocate to our canning community

Just as an fyi - Pur is a distribution company that jumped on the bandwagon in 2020. Originally, they sold PPE and then added the China made canning lids. Their website shows Pur Health Group. As far as ForJars go, they are also China made and imo haven’t passed the time test.

Heather, you are a total jewel to our world of canning. You and a few others I watch. I have been canning for a few years now and there are very few UA-camrs I go to for my information (so I feel safe doing it). We all appreciate you and your knowledge of canning and your sincerity. I'm pretty sure we can all say, WE LOVE YOU, and THANK YOU for all you do, for each one of us! My prayer is that for the good you have done for US on this video, it doesn't come back to bite you for your honest opinion (and ours too). Heather. YOU are on fire! Thank you so much for making us aware of this VITAL information that Harvest Guard didn't think was important to share with their customers.
I consider myself a sporadic canner. I've canned for years but not regularly.
I did purchase the HG lids when Ball lids were impossible to find. They have been sitting on my shelf, as i was using up my stock of Ball lids. So tomorrow, i need to check the date on the package and see if they were prior to 2021.
I also purchased specially designed lid openers from HG for $4.00 each.
I was extremely disappointed with how flimsy they were for that price. I worked for a while but didn't last long before it snapped. At the time i was going to complain to the company but during the height of the pandemic there were more pressing issues.
Anyway, i just wanted to Thank you for sharing this info.

For disposable I use only Ball. I would not call myself an expert in canning, but I am not new to canning. I am new to the reusable product and would have not realized this. 1.) I wa a new canner in 2020 and purchased Tattler lids. Since then, ive struggled with buth Tattlers and Ball lids not sealing in the canning process, and unsealing randomly on the shelf!! Thank you for your honest opinion and advocacy.
2.) I hope Tattler will continue to sell individual gaskets. I had heard that they weren't selling just the gaskets anymore, which would conflict with what you were told about their inventory in the millions. Wondering about that issue sonce i have at least half a dozen sets. 😮
