The flatness of the throw was really the genius of it. Even when it became well-known as Stoke's attacking weapon, teams couldn't practice for it like they do for corners or free kicks. No one could do that long, flat delivery on any other team, so for years teams had no answer for it.

It's not because it's more controllable with your hands than feet that this is a great tool....
It's because the launch point is almost a full 7 feet higher , meaning the degree at which the ball is coming at is much flatter, and the ball doesnt go in an arc - meaning its MUCH harder for the goalie to assess and come to collect

Any player who can do something than no one else can is just so valuable. For example, Neymar shows off that he's got really fast feet as a kid... he ends up being hunted for by the top teams for £100m+, Beckham shows that he can bend a kick really well, he becomes the top watched player on earth at the time... while stuff like this can be just, if not more valuable, because it's something that just needs to catch the opposition out once, and your in. Alternatively, they then have to change their preparation to adapt to you. How would they train for Delap's long throws? Have one of those ball launchers lobbing balls for half an hour, or just a guy kicking the ball as straight as he can to mimic a throw.
It throws them off their stride, which is just so valuable to any team.

I heard that on the inside of his shirts he'd have sown in a golf towel, or something. So he could dry the ball.. Clearly away grounds wouldn't throw him a towel to dry the ball. So he'd bring his own.

I really want to see a team based around Rory Delap. Everyone's at minimum 6 foot 4, leaps like a salmon, I want every player capable of driving up the pitch and able to do some skill in order to win a throw-in. That would be majestic

And the story about Pulis is several of his players said he agitated and egged them to hurt arsenal players before the game ryan shawcross broke aaron ramsey's leg and the whole country defended aaron ra- nope- Stoke.

It's pretty funny that Delap played most of his premier league career with Southampton and Derby and got to 32 before he started taking long throws. Maybe he just never thought to tell anyone he could do them before that
