      I would expect those who are being fed by residuals to be upset. But let’s be clear, it’s a business and not an emotional decision.
      Things like “snatched away” are not productive. If this was menu item at a restaurant no one was buying, it would be ‘86 or removed.
      It’s not snatched off the menu…it’s wasn’t profitable

    • @smugapple
      @smugapple Рік тому +51

      @@TheEliFamilyI think that somewhat misses the point. The implicit idea behind streaming was, for a time, that in exchange for paying monthly fee, and in lieu of purchasing physical media/individual digital licenses, the viewer could be confident that all the content owned by the streaming service would always be available and therefore they did not need to purchase individual shows/movies, or worry about them disappearing.
      So while the content being removed may not be particular popular or mainstream, and the removal makes sense from a business perspective, it represents the end of this implicit “contract” between the streaming service and it’s viewers. I think that’s what’s most upsetting, and could drive the perception that there is less value in maintaining a subscription even for consumers that would never have watched the specific shows.

    • @TheEliFamily
      @TheEliFamily Рік тому +4

      @@smugapple I’m sympathetic to what your saying, just don’t agree with this contract element you spoke to. Your expectations of what you should get are based on your feelings. Same analogy as the restaurant and now let’s say it’s a buffet. They took off a few side items you liked so stop going to that buffet. The sense of entitlement for a paid service is something I don’t understand. You can talk with your wallet.
      This is not water or electricity ⚡️ that is a public good you need to get from them.
      I’ll go one step further, let’s say this is a Disney park and they closed a few attractions and your a membership. Don’t renew your membership if the value isn’t there…

      @@smugapple I think anybody going into a streaming service or buying a digital movie off a VOD service with an idea of "forever" is a bit naive. What if tomorrow Apple declared bankruptcy. Do you think you'd really have all your movies if itunes no longer existed? Its not like physical media is forever either. Not only do movies have the possibility of going out of print, but discs scratch or wear out over time.

    • @shanetaylor761
      @shanetaylor761 Рік тому +7

      @@smugapple I never got the idea that it was contractually expected that every streaming service keep every one of its shows. I always looked at it as paying for a brand. The Netflix brand offers these shows and disney offers these. For the entirety of my life brands have switched up there formulas and marketing. It would be a little naive to think that every thing(including all the stuff nobody is watching) will always be accessible forever. Just using the word forever in terms of any business is naive. Disney is merging with Hulu so now they'll be offering maybe even double(maybe more) the content. For the to facilitate that business decision and grow as a streaming service they had to cut cost. I'm not surprised by any means that they do stuff like this but situationally you gotta admit this isn't a bad deal. With all the shady business practices in the world this seems kinda beneficial. Now if I hear later that disney plus cost 20 a month now I'll be annoyed but if any thing this plan should ensure the jump is at least a little smaller.

    This whole thing is just plain awful. All these shows... all these people put their heart and soul into these shows. I hate the way business works sometimes. If anyone who made these shows sees this. Thank you all for the entertainment. And Thank You Dan for keeping in the loop. You rock!

    • @entertainmentfan1463
      @entertainmentfan1463 Рік тому +1

      It's more awful when you realize the streaming era was just the studios pulling off another scam to screw the people who made these shows from the money they owe them. It's why the writers are on strike and why the actors guild and directors guild are likely joining in soon. The studios made a small deal with the actors guild like a year or two ago so they don't go on strike early, but it's still smaller than what they normally make.
      You know something is wrong when a writer for a popular streaming show says they made less than half during that show's production than when they were on strike the last time in 2007. You know something is more wrong then a writer says their residual check for their streaming show is less than $30 while indie filmmakers on Tubi are reporting anything from $200+ a paycheck, to getting lucky and earning 5 figures in a quarter earning. And the big studio or well known projects can earn 7 figures in one quarter earning.

  • @jimmyboy7817
    @jimmyboy7817 Рік тому +186

    The irony was that since Disney + was meant to be in-house content, it would be less likely to disappear since they owned it. Netflix had a lot of third-party content that disappeared because the rights had expired or another company had outbid them and taken it off them. This proves nothing is safe on a streaming service. I still find it irritating when some movies are available to watch on multiple streaming libraries and there are others that aren't available anywhere. Each time technology updates, something gets left behind and relegated to the past.

      Most of it may never see the light of day, but I can honestly see Disney pulling them out of "the Disney vault" when their stars win an award, retire, or pass away.

      I've noticed my regions Hbo also does remove a lot of content. They are kinda underdogs so some brilliant content that people just didn't find get's chopped after it's shown for too little engagement quite quickly. It's annoying.
      The worst is the series these platforms start and doesn't follow thru with..??? Like the netflix's 1899 that got enough of eyes according to the makers of it for a second season, was going to be 3 season show and netflix cut it.. Basically reason being some slow brained calling it tooo sloow and boring on internet. The overall reception being it feels there is something but not completely sold yet. So stupid reason to not extend, especially when the first season was kinda like a set-up season for the bigger mystery but still had enough of cool/interesting things happening inside of it while explaining the concept. Kinda like when Game of Thrones came people called it boring and by 3-4 season whole world was catching up to it. So it seems to me if they with the 1899 make the decision to continue it will be almost impossible to get anything more adult orientated atleast from netflix, if they are that scared to go on in such a good spot. No wonder they put the money in multiple cheaper teenage bs shows like Wednesday (it was ok but didn't make any sense plot-wise, so low effort. It basically took half of it's aesthetic and worldbuilding, some plot from Harry Potter. Also what the lead Jenna Ortega have said about what the original vision was going to be was truly horrible because the character itself was only saving factor in the show)(There was that drama of the writers calling her publicly entitled and blabla because she mentioned in Dax'es podcast that she had to act a bit unprofessional since the chatacter was essentially written so bad, now she is a producer in S02 so atleast netflix saw that her decisions over writing saved the show 😂).

    It's fascinating to watch what I assume is just another temporary stage of the industry figuring out how streaming works, but it's gonna hurt so many people's livelihoods in the meantime. Not just from lack of residuals - the opportunities for future work are shrinking, both from belt-tightening and the looming threat of AI, ready to take a lot of TV and film jobs. God, imagine if we lived in a Star Trek universe where money didn't matter and we could just make and watch all kinds of great stuff.

    Even worse the creator of that show couldn't even finish his story, and had to beg for scraps to now make a graphic novel to finish it, but they put rules he can't crowdfund or anything. They have the IP, don't put it on anything to be viewed and deny anyone else even the creators to use it.

    I do think that part of the WGA demands should be that if a series is direct to streaming, and then leaves that streaming service, the studio is obligated to make a physical version, or some other alternate delivery option, available to customers. There must always be some version available. The exact qualities of what "the bare minimum" would entail would be up for negotiation, but they should at least be able to offer people a DVD for $15-20. People would still need to seek out these options, so it's not like they'd be selling a bunch of these, but the option should always exist.

    It does seem like a bad strategy to do this in the middle of strikes by the WGA and pending strikes by both SAG-AFTRA and the DGA. Now that this is a reality it's going to be something else that will probably be brought up during this round of negotiations instead of down the line when it's time for the contracts to be renewed again. In a way that's good for the unions as it's something they can point to and argue that if it's happening now it'll happen again but it also means another discussion point that could end up drawing the strike out longer.

Most Disney + shows/original movies have also left the platform, most notably Willow. And this has been done without any prior notice from the platform, the exact opposite of what HBOMax (we still have it here) does. My question though is why were 90% of these shows commissioned in the first place? I know it's difficult to predict what will be a hit but so many of these shows (not all) look like they were only ever filler content. Like they were made so someone could pocket money from Disney. There's so little rhyme or reason to them when everyone is already inundated with content. The truth is, most shows on streaming get most of their views in the first few weeks. If they don't get new seasons then they get lost in the ever growing number of tiles on the menu. Next to no one will miss the majority of these. And this isn't even 10% of what Disney has made in the last few years. Disney needs someone who is much more discerning and has better taste to greenlight their new productions.

I'm not sure which guild that would even have to be, but it would be nice to at least have some kind of system in place where all of these shows and movies will be archived in some way so they are at least available in some form in the future and not just because permanently lost media. Even if they just get stored on a hard drive or blu ray and locked in a vault that would be better than them just disappearing forever just in case in 20 years people get nostalgic for 2020s shows and they want to bring them back or something.
