In this video, I demonstrate The very delicate process of installing peel and stick wallpaper.
Peel and stick and stick wallpaper was originally never made to be a wallpaper. It was made for stickers and decals. Over time it became popular for people living in apartments, condos or temporary living situations because they could easily install and remove it. Unfortunately, speaking as an installer, peel and stick wallpaper (aka selfstick, temporary or self-adhesive wallpaper) is not as easy to install as advertised. In fact, because it's sticky on the back it presents its own sets of challenges that regular wallpaper doesn't have (mainly that you can slide the wallpaper into position).
Tips
1. Prepare walls. They must be smooth.
2. Do not put it on textured walls, especially ones with orange peel.
3. Do not take entire back plastic wrapping off (do it in stages)
4. Get help and do not try to hang it alone. You need 2 people ideally.
5. Use dry eraser instead of a typical smoother for MOST of the smoothing process so you don't damage wallpaper. This is very thin material.
5. Have residential home hair blower (not a heat gun) for air bubbles at the end should they happen.

Evening! What the kind of primer should be use on a cocrete wall? And what is the difference between vinyl and that wall paper??
Alejandro Magma no difference! This is super thin vinyl. Also , use roman pro 999.

Thank you for explaining to your helper what to do and where to place his hands and not yelling!!!!! I think many of us are scarred from getting yelled at by our dads and not understanding what to do lol
Love your comment. This video was a completely impromptu video. The young helper was the son of one of the sweetest people I have ever worked for… The wife of a gentleman who owns a big painting company. Two of the best people I have ever worked for and so I just meant that young boy and he was helping me and my helper was actually using the camera
@@spencercolgan 😂😂😂😂
Is it just me or is this guy doing the greatest Christopher Walken impression ever?
You are probably the 35th person who has told me that… I really wish somebody with a lot of money hires me to imitate him because I would love to hit it big
I knew he was reminding me of someone, but I could not figure it out. Nice job!
I was just going to make that comment. Great 'impression'!
Spencer Colgan Wallpaper & Painting : do you live in Florida? maybe if I know somebody that lives in Florida and needs to hire somebody I’ll recommend your UA-cam
😆
I wish every profesor I had were as supportive and team player as this man.
You can use a 'chip clip' as a weight to hold the backing down as you peel it. The clip is heavy enough to fight static but won't let it spring back up and get in the way.
Same thought
Great idea.
This is the best low key impression of Christopher Walkin I have ever seen.
Thank you so much Spencer - first of all and all, for your careful, honest and objective observation and comments on self-adhesive wall papers, not for the manufacturers, resellers, or acting as a professional installer showing a DIY job is so easy!
And your instruction speed and details both are good, tone is clear. Thanks again!
If you know other DIY work, please do more video.
I just used 3 clothespins on the back to hold the plastic down smooth and pull down. The pins kept the plastic film out of the way and nobody to work around
Wow man, thank you so much, you are a business saver. I am a professional installer for about 20 years. And I’ve worked in hundreds of jobs and one thing I’m sure after this video. I learned couple of new things for sure. Keep up the good work Spencer. 🤗
Great installation tutorial! We all need Cal to assist. He did a fantastic job! Kudos to Cal!
Thank you Lisa; that young man was the son of the woman for whom I was hanging this peel and stick and she let me use his help. That’s why I didn’t know his name because he was actually the customer son LOL LOL LOL
@@spencercolgan LOL ... I did catch that in your video. You and Cal are a good team!!
Yeah nice one Cal
Good thing I watched this before I bought removable wallpaper for my textured wall!!
Sooooo informative! I am planning to use peel and stick for an update in the closet, and this is one if the best instructional videos I have seen.
You are an awesome teacher. Thanks again!
Kylana Garrison And you are an awesome viewer
Thanks for the tutorial. Instead of running to get a eraser I used both a roll of T.P and a paint roller. Worked great
Excellent idea!!!!!!
Thanks for the tip on using a paint roller instead of an eraser! I'm about to embark on my peel&stick installation and I have lots of unused paint rollers but no eraser. You just saved me a trip to the store!
This was possibly the best tutorial I’ve ever watched. Thanks for all the great tips!
Thank you for the video. Not only did I get a good footing on how to install this type of paper, I now understand the limitations and not to expect too much from Peel and Stick. It will work well for out temporary needs, but know that it will not be permanent.
Your tip on the eraser worked great! I used a high grade peel and stick with a thicker backing that did not have the same static issues that you had with the thin backing, so I was able to install it myself. Thanks for the video, B.
We succeeded thanks to you. The best peel and stick installation video that I was able to find. Thanks a lot!
I am glad i watched this before installing the wallpaper on my own
Seriously, best stick and peel wallpaper video, ever. Got my kitchen done in no time after watching this. THANK YOU!!
You’re welcome Jen.
Remember do not do this alone, like most videos I’ve seen today. Informative video Sir.
I hope you're still replying to comments! 1. This was perfect, thank you. 2. Should I be buying vinyl or non woven wallpaper?
Paper! If you can help it. Or conventional vinyl with a pastable backing! Thanks feom the USA.
Great video very informative just saved me from making several mistakes . Thank you
I have been applying wall covering for quite a few years, still not a fan of this peel-n-stick stuff. Did a small above the chair rail mural a few weeks ago, came out pretty good. I have a small kids bathroom to do next week with peel-n-stick, not looking forward to it. I think my OCD for perfection is going to be out of control. Thank you for the great tip with the dry erase applicator,,,,never thought of that.
Hey man so did you end up skimming the wall ?
This video serendipitously appeared in my recommended section today. I’m hanging peel and stick wallpaper this weekend and your advice will be invaluable. I’ve also watched several other of your videos today (ok, three+ hours’ worth) and looking forward to more. I really appreciate your method of instruction and am a new subscriber. Fantastic!! I am thinking of purchasing peel & stick wallpaper but to have a professional install it. However, my walls are standard wallboard that has matte finish paint that was applied with a roller 25 years ago. Does this mean that I cannot use peel & stick without refinishing my walls first? If so, the gorgeous wallpaper I wanted from Germany may be too much trouble.
Him: do NOT peel this off. Do NOT
Me: yes dad
Professor Spencer Colgan, you are a wonderful teacher!!!
Lol. Thank you for the hysterical laughter that you gave me this afternoon. I appreciate it vania.
Hello Spencer, these videos are so helpful I have a wall that needed to be primed. I painted it with killz primer and it has properly sealed. However now the paint has given it a slight texture. I know you have repeated to instal on a smooth surface. I was wonering if it is possible to simply sand it. Like others also love the “christopher walken” quality to your voice
Please make it smooth with a thin skim coat. Then prime again. Using a Purdy 3/8 nap roller.
Thx for the great help. I spent a lot of time getting wall flat and the bin primer is the ticket for great adhesion. I used to install window film on cars and homes . Was very similar and used my tinting tools
Dad is giving me control freak vibes. And i am here for it ☺️
Hi Spencer, another great video on wallpaper installation. Lots of professional steps to learn from you. Keep doing a great job.
Thank you
You are quite welcome
His interaction with his kid was honestly the best part.
Omg every tip you mentioned is true.
I found out the hard way.
Wish I had seen your video before installing the wallpapers 😭😂
I appreciate how he explains the reason why it doesn't stick properly and etc.

I have to do peel and stick. And would of done something like this.but now I have seen it done! makes me feel that I can succeed in doing it.thanks spencer!!
Hey Spencer I just watched your tutorial on self adhesive wallpaper last night because believe it or not I had to apply this horrendous material to a chimney breast today! You were lucky dude just putting it on a flat wall,I had to turn 2 external corners with the damn stuff. Mine was a normal wallpaper width but yours looked somewhat wider?. Great advice about the backing removal technique it worked a treat. Also I used a soft rubber spatula to apply it and think I got away with it. I had to wrap around the corners only slightly because the angles were miles off plumb, then had to slightly overlap the next piece but the end result wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. All I can say is “never again” Take care dude.
Here you go:
ua-cam.com/video/1yMlZWj9zS8/v-deo.html
Spencer wow! Wish I’d known about this method yesterday. It seems so obvious now to use my ready mixed adhesive with this type of paper. The brand I used actually said on the instructions that you must overlap each piece by 0.5mm because over time it s possible that the self adhesive could be compromised and would shrink, therefore creating a gap in the joints. So I did this but must say wasn’t happy because it had a matching pattern! The customer thought it looked great but I came away disappointed and felt guilty taking my fee. If I came across this again I probably would give your method a go and let you know how it went but won’t lose any sleep if I don’t haha. Cheers dude take care out there.
Great demonstration and explanation sir. Well done
You done a wonderful job articulating the install. Very meticulous and descriptive, great job, wish me luck!
This is so incredibly helpful. How many years would you say this could be expected to last? Could peel and stick wallpaper last me at least 2 years without falling off?
Oh, yes, Absolutely!
@@spencercolgan Oh wow, great! Thank you for the quick reply!
I just partially finished wallpapering a small foyer wall with this stuff. My walls are plaster and not until I opened the instructions did I see that it's not for plaster walls. sigh. It's small enough so I can 'fix' it without too much headache, but I am definitely going back to wallpaper and paste! Old school is best.
It's very similar to working with vinyl and transfer paper. I'm not sure if this technique will help with this but it's helpful to tape the top with painter's tape and creating a hinge to peel the plastic out from behind.
Great information and tips for installing peel and stick wallpaper! Thank you. Cal with his Christopher Walken sound demands that you pay attention! LOL
J. D. I know ! Sounds just like him .
Great instruction, thanks! Regarding the air bubbles: say the installation is done, and you notice a bubble, could you not take a needle and make a tiny hole in the bubble to allow air to escape as you re-flatten? The hole would be almost invisible I would think.
Wait 48 hours then do that.
This was very helpful. However, the real problem is alignment of more than 1 sheet so that the pattern matches up. Can you please do a follow up tutorial? Most people are using this product to do a whole accent wall, rather than panels that are separated. Great job though! Thanks!
Please take a look in the description of the video and you will see a multiplicity of videos that followed this one that deal with my installation instructions on Peel and stick
Will it lose its stickiness or create bubbles overtime on high temperature (eg. tropical country)?
The eraser is genius! Thanks.
Great thank you! Luckily I’m still alive after finally learning after 4 attempts, I ended up wrapping a microfiber rag over a 2x4 and stapling to the back for it to stay.
Eraser nice tip thanks, lovely job
This was incredibly entertaining
Lol!!!!
I've read that it's best to buy a quality, thick wallpaper to make it easier to install. How is thickness determined? Is it a weight measurement or an actual width measurement? Is this something a vendor would readily include in the product description (the thickness or weight of the paper)? Also, what is considered to be quality, thick wallpaper whether by thickness or weight?
Great video! But what about the trimming of the excess? Do you use an exact knife or a box cutter? Any trips or tricks to getting the right?
Please check out any one of my other videos on Wallpaper and you will see how to trim this because it’s the same exact way in every other video
Thank you, sir, for this great instructional video. I feel confident about the shown process, but I must admit I'm anxious about trimming the excess with a scalpel. I'm afraid there's no way to avoid any contact with the underlying surface, and I wouldn't want to leave marks.
Please. Have confidence

This guy has his Christopher Walken voice down really well... the hair needs some work for the impression to work but so far hes on the right path!
I know it's 4 years later but I LOVE this paper. Anyone know where it came from?
Thank you for the tips. I recently put some paper on my counter and have quite a few air bubbles and on another project have a wrinkle. I am going to try what you say, wish me luck!
Hi there Spencer! I'm hooked on your videos. Thank you for them. I've purchased peel-n-stick, simply because I love the design, but it's not available any other way. It will be installed on a wall very much like on this video. My question... I'd like it to be more permanent. I've sanded and primed the wall. Should I pretreat the wall with Gardz, or maybe even should I use a weldbond/water mixture? Any suggestions? Thank you so much. Debra
Mam. Thank you for watching.
Smooth your walls. Then use gardz after smoothing. Let dry overnight. Then guess what. Using clamps on a table, pull wax backing off of your peel n stick and using a roller, apply clear heavy duty paste. Yes. Paste! A thin layer making sure you cover every square inch.
Thanks for watching!

Hey Spencer. Great tutorial as usual. Have you ever removed one and if so what did the walls look like afterwards?
Never removed sir
Geekwraps tools has plastic felt edge squeegees that can be used with this material also when squeegeeing I always angle my strokes so that to push the air down or up depending on where I started.
Thank you very much Spencer.
Very nice!!! Love it!!! Keep them coming.
Great one shot presentation 🙌🏼
What about bathrooms or room with higher humidity? Recommend or not?
I highly recommend 2 people for installation, also. I had a heII of a time just installing contact paper in my kitchen cupboards by myself! By the end I was so frustrated that I didn't care if my shelving paper had creases.
Looks great! Can you use this removal wall paper over top of existing wall paper? Would you consider this 'cost effective? How hard is it to remove and is there any residual 'adhesive or anything left on the wall when removed?
1. You cannot use this paper over existing wallpaper.
2. It is not cost-effective.
3. It is not hard to remove since there is no glue being used in this video for this material.
4. There is no residual anything left on the wall when you remove it.
Great tips. Going to do a small area of wall. My mom and I will use your tutorial to put it up. I found a faux rustic wood panel one I like at Home Depot.
Please UA-cam my name and peel and stick. I did many peel n stick vids. Please watch a few more.
@@spencercolgan will do. I sent my mom the link to your video since like she’ll be the applier and I’ll be the one pulling back the backing. Most likely
Will steam from hot water filling the room cause this type of wallpaper to peel off?
What about trimming the wall paper edge/edges once it is up. Is it a simple X-Acto knife and a straight edge?
Ok awesome...now what do you do about all the extra overlap???
Trim it.
Hi Spencer, your explanation is very detailed and precise. Greatly appreciated. I am about to do a project for my mom's house, except that it is tiled. How would you propose that work with to ensure that the grouting lines between every tile does not have that line of air bubble gap?
You cannot proceed without making that surface flat. You can apply an even smooth layer of compound in a Skimcoat fashion then hang peel and stick after primer
@@spencercolgan thanks Spencer.
I need to redo my bathroom. After spending a lot if money besides buying this house, new floors, lights, carpeting ect...my question is can I go over existing wallpaper? I wanted to avoid that for now. This is temporary. I don't know what the walls are even like underneath. Suggestions please. I wish it would have been painted but nope, I'm stuck with old wallpaper.
No. I would mot out this over old wallpaper.
@@spencercolgan thanks! Old paper is already off. Getting ready to paint!!😀
Looking to skim coat my wall. What primer is best for adhesion?
Thanks for making these videos! I was just going to try to put my peel/stick on a textured wall until I came across this.
I’m so glad you saw this video’. Please use Guards or Bins. Both are from Zinsser.
Great job, thanks!
I also use a rubber window squeegee to smooth it.
Hi, thanks for your video. I’m trying to re purpose a shelving system to use out doors in my backyard. Besides paint, I’m using vinyl wallpaper, peel and stick, for the sides and back of the shelving system. The wood is some sort particle board. What should I use to seal it, and protect it from the Florida sun and rain? Will sealers adhere to the vinyl? Should I use a water based polyurethane first over the paint to seal the wood, and then apply the vinyl wallpaper? Will the wallpaper stick to the sealer? I also would rather have a matte finish, but don’t even know if any of this is possible. This is my first project.....so I am a bit lost. Any help would be appreciated.
Seal the wood with BIN feom zinsser. The vinyl won’t stand up to the expansion and contraction of outdoor use.
Christopher Walken! Thanks for the video!!!
Why use an eraser? Wouldn’t a small roller be just as soft and easier
Love the wallpaper.
Question spencer, is peel and stick a nightmare removing after a couple years of installation?
Not at all!
Love the eraser tip!
My interest in peel and stick started just because I feel the prints are so much prettier. I can't find regular wallpaper with prints I like as much. However, I am drawn away from the peel and stick because of words like "temporary" and "short term." The wall I want to do will cost $300-400 to do in peel and stick. I dont want to pay that much for something that may only last 1-2 years?! What have your experiences been with durability and longevity of peel and sticks?
1. Very durable.
2. They remain on the wall so long as wall is prepared properly.
@@spencercolgan But there are differences in quality. For example: Nu Wallpaper is made of a vinyl substrate but it is not PVC. But there is also another one called 'd-c-fix' which is made of PVC. Which one is better?
I searched wallpaper boulevard for this design but can't find it. Please tell me the name or order number. Thank you.
You mentioned using a household hair dryer but it wasn’t demonstrated in the video. When/where does that come into play?
I use it ONLY if I have bubbles.
Spencer could you please tell me more about wall prep. Is it better to use satin or semi gloss behind peel and stick Mural? Can I use a special product, wall paste on the wall instead of repainting the wall that will help the Mural stick better? I am installing a Mural on a wall in our church that is @ 8 ' x 12'. Areas of the wall will be repaired and plastered first. If we can put a wall preparation product over the repaired wall instead of paint that would save time and money. If you have a product to recommend please let me know what it is.
Please UA-cam Spencer Colgan peel and stick and see my other videos on the subject.
How do you remove the glue from non wall surfaces? And wall surfaces? This left a mean residue on a table and some parts of my wall for some reason
Warm water, a textured sponge and elbow grease 101.
How do you cut off the refuse?
You simply push all of the air out at the edge this time, not with an eraser, but with a plastic smoother, not a sharp one, but a rounded one which will you will see in many of my other videos… Keep the smoother up against the corner and simply cut above the smoother as you have the smoother pressed into the corner and then along the smoother, using a snap off blades, simply cut along the smoother.
Veel like ripped the paint a some mud off my skim coat after I tired to adjust an edge. Failed twice. This stuff is harder than normal wallpaper.
Love the eraser tip! Do
You think temperature matters? Installing in a fiberglass trailer in winter(45 degrees).
Must be 50 degrees Fahrenheit to 72
Good tips. Good job! TY
Spencer. Great video. Thank you so much for posting this. One question. When. you say prime the walls you refer to getting rid of the texture? You mentioned something about a primer also. Which one?
Thank you!
This newest video explains all of it!

Very nice Cal
SPENCER THE GREAT!
drink for everytime he says 'be aggressive"
Is it upside down? very informative I hate peel n stick
Can you recommend a good strong adhesive to use?
Roman 880.
How do you prime the wall? What do you use?
Zinsser’s BIN
I skim coated my wall but what do I prime it with? Just regular paint primer? And do I really need to prime it since the wallpaper will be stuck over it?
Prime with shieldz clear.
How do you trim the edges of a peel and stick wallpaper?
Razor blade and smoother. Watch any of my videos to see!
I’m not sure if I should prime my walls or not. They aren’t entirely smooth to the touch. Would it matter if I was to prime them anyway even if they don’t necessarily need it?
Nicole, priming and smooth are not related.
You should prime your walls to prepare them to most effectively receive your wallcovering.
This involves putting a primer to make the surface protected from future Wallpaper removal, in addition to making the wall sticky and non-porous in order to receive your wallcovering so that it stays up for the duration of your desires.
Therefore, use a product called Gardz from Zinsser.
Can you apply peel and stick wall paper OVER existing wallpaper?
I rent an apartment and there is very dated wallpaper in the kitchen and bathroom and I wanted to freshen it up.
No way. Can’t be done.
Thank you
