USS BATAAN (LHD 5) is a multipurpose amphibious assault ship commissioned in 1997 and homeported in Norfolk, Va. With a crew of nearly 1000 Sailors and Marines, the ship is capable of embarking a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), a mix of aircraft including the MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor helicopter and AV-8B Harrier light attack jet, and up to three Landing Craft Air Cushion. Bataan is returning from a deployment in the Fifth and Sixth Fleet Area of Operations with 1200 embarked Marines of the 22d MEU. The ship and her crew departed Norfolk Naval Station with two weeks' notice and nearly four months ahead of schedule on an open-ended deployment. Was so excited to see footage in several of these documentaries, shot at our mission campus in Grand Goave Haiti where the U.S. Navy, Bataan Crew and other U.S. military joined us at Lifeline Christian Mission in our relief work! We were invited by Captain Sam Howard (January 2010) to visit the ship and had the exhililarting experience of going on the LCAC to the Bataan for a tour.

I was onboard for this deployment. Bataan (or the “Dirty Nickel” as some called it) was my last sea command before heading off to shore duty to retire after a 25 year career. This deployment was long and tough, but the crew did an outstanding job handling everything that was thrown at them. A big shout out to my Sailors and Marines in my divisions, S7, S8 and S10 who were there with me. I’ll say it again, You all did an OUTSTANDING JOB and I couldn’t have ask for a better team, thank you all!

Fact: The word "Bataan" comes from a name of a place in the northern Philippines where old military base of the US from WWII was there!
