Glad you found interesting, but it's nothing to do with lacrosse. The modern sport of hockey (the NHL kind) actually owes a lot to hurling as Irish immigrants who went to Canada in the 19th century brought hurling with them which fed into the development of the sport.
Fellow New Jerseyian here Joe. I have played Hurling for the Hoboken club for the past 6 years and started a team at Kean University as well as the New York County team that just won the Native World Games division. I always described Hurling almost as a cross between Hockey, Lacrosse, and Baseball but 4000 years older than those sports! If you’re ever interested in seeing a game let me know!
This looks physical more demanding than American Football and i have no idea what this sport is, but i like it coming from an American. How does the games work? Is there a regular season? Is there a playoff with a championship finish? Interesting sport
The main one is the county championships which they play for the provincial and then All Ireland title. Every player on a county team also plays for a club team . But you can only play for your local club and home county so no transfers. it's an amateur sport so all players have regular jobs. They play for pride and the love of their community
It's like if Baseball and Soccer has an unholy love child that was better than both of the sports it was born from ever could be. Yes, I know Hurling is probably older than both.
Does the insult "head the ball", meaning a lunatic, originate from Hurling? You'd have to be mad to head a Hurling ball (it has a Gaelic name that I can't pronounce), whilst it descends onto your cranium at 90 mph...

I can also see similarities to Australian rules FOOTBALL.
As an Irishman I would say hurling is 10x better than Gaelic football as Gaelic football isn’t really that interesting or anything
@@ihonestlydontcare1158 imma gonna be honest,I find gaelic football way more interesting than normal football. The skills required, strategies and tactics are way more in gaelic than association. But yea hurling solos both
i have literally never heard of this sport before
Great video.
Man they could easily hurt each other with that weird lookin spoon when things got outta control..
This is like hockey and rugby combined
It'd like baseball and field hockey combined.
It looks dangerous! 😮
Wow these boys sure know how to handle those balls
rugby with a tiny painful ball and big fucking sticks.. IM IN. you irishbros are a different breed.. shoutout from a philadelphia asshole, who also loves bar fights- even though i lose most fights.
Way better than soccer
Ye probably won’t believe me but Kevin Broderick’s my neighbor
Omg, great galway hurler
This looks wicked. Does anyone know if lacrosse was brought about as an adaptation of this?
No lacrosse has it's own distinct history as a native american sport, the similarities are just coincidental.
@@matthewedgeworth4509 that’s incredible
@@ethanpope410 But people have been hitting balls with sticks of various kinds for a long time. Field hockey and ice hockey too after all. Hurling is also connected particularly to Scottish shinty (the type of hurling that was once played in the northern part of Ireland would have been quite similar). And there are others that have not survived into modern codified sports, take a look at Welsh bando for instance - museum.wales/articles/1216/Bando---An-ancient-manly-game/#:~:text=Bando%20resembled%20an%20early%20form,it%20into%20the%20opponents'%20goal.
History behind hurling is crazy the English used execute the Irish for playing it but it was such a rough game that threw Irish volunteers used recruit their best soldiers from games. Also Bloody Sunday took place where Croke park now is (3rd largest stadium in europe) when the English killed many 14 people for playing the sport
i like the music
Looks like hockey 🏒 and LaCrosse 🥍 in one interesting
@@Cinemallennials Good on ya. Well done
@@padraigsisk4057 Go raibh maith agat!
So it's a cross between hockey and murder?
Does the insult "head the ball", meaning a lunatic, originate from Hurling? You'd have to be mad to head a Hurling ball (it has a Gaelic name that I can't pronounce), whilst it descends onto your cranium at 90 mph...
In America this is the equivalent of baseball, hockey and lacrosse all in one sport on the grass. Looks fun but extremely painfull.

I have been playing hurling for 6 years
Irish sports be like:
Get a ball & Do whatever the hell you want with it.
Seems a mix of gaelic football, rugby and lacrosse.
Wow, es la primera vez que veo este deporte :o
I can only imagine how many times they have been hit with a hurl
wild stuff. the lack of equipment must add up to a broken bone or 30
Looks like Australian Rules played like hockey but with a very high skill level
sounds like a cool sport, just randomly found out truth jason fight scene.
Im amazed the goal line referees stand there without a helmet and their hands in their pockets 😮
