Very good explanation and very clear about what the game rules are, how they interact, and foster different strategies. I only had to slow you down to 0.75x, in order to get it all, because otherwise it was quite fast.
This one of my favorite games only played the base game (I don't believe in expansions) and I agree I always play with the leaders they give people direction while not forcing you to go in a certain direction. One thing you didn't mention that I think makes them really valuable is the bonus you get for discarding them. I usually only end up playing two leaders and discarding two.
"(I don't believe in expansions)" "I always play with the leaders" You realize that the Leaders are effectively an included mini expansion? If you want to call them "Advanced Rules," that's fine, but it's still an additional set of rules and component, exactly like an expansion. There is a lot of extra content in games out there where the designers had to determine whether they could leave it in or need sell it separately. This may have been due to budgeting, fitting the allowed box size, reducing complexity for a broader audience, and more. My point is: I would never swear off expansions as a principle, especially when they sometimes were intended to compete the game all along.
@@Elucidarian That is a good argument. Now how would we know if it was meant to complete the game from the beginning? Or why did it get cut? I don't believe we will ever get those answers. So to me if it comes in the base game it is part of it and if it comes separate it is an expansion. I know they come up with boxes with everything in it after the fact but that's not what we are talking about.
@@J-Wheeler-G I made my comment because I have actually come across interviews and designer diaries where the designers explicitly stated that an expansion was originally intended to be part of the base game. They were forced to leave them out for one reason or another. Usually, whether the base game sold well enough determined whether they able to publish the extra content.
@@BoardGameCo Actually, I was asking because I think I have the same insert. I was being a little coy because normally like the ones this company makes (it’s European, but I don’t want to say more and bad-mouth them unfairly). Mine fits the box (there are actually two slightly different box sizes), but my issue is that it doesn’t hold everything in place when the box is shelved vertically. If you had said that you liked it, I would have followed up by asking how you stack it and it everything stays in place - maybe I’m doing something wrong.
@@sethwinslow by my guess it's the "Tower Rex" Insert. However I have the Same problem as Alex does... Therefore In am somewhat ashamed to admit that I did cut the bottom part of the Box on one end in order to fit the insert more easily. The top Part of the Box does hold everything in place just fine. I am storing the box horizontally; therefore I do not have the same problem as you do, but I can see where you are coming from.
@@setabominae2429 Yes. It’s the fifth insert that I’ve brought from them. I still *LOVE* the first four - they are my go to for inserts. That’s why I was reluctant to name them directly. When I contacted them privately, they admitted that was one of their earliest designs. (They didn’t offer my a discount/refund, and to be fair, I didn’t ask for one). I can confirm that their/current later work is top-notch.
@@sethwinslow yeah, their Inserts are great; I do own a few of them myself. I do like the Lorenzo Insert even though I ve had to Cut my Box - should have read the description... Thank you! Glad you enjoyed.
Reminded me how much a loved this game. Last play in 2019 already! I agree that the expansion is excellent.
Yes!
Lorenzo is one of my favorite pure Euros of all time. 10/10
Nice :)

@@Elucidarian I know it happens, and one of the main reasons it gets cut is to make money later
Great overview, thanks! Also, that’s a cool looking insert. Which one is it?
I'm actually replacing it, sadly it doesn't fit well in the box

Do you feel this is necessary if I already have Grand Austria Hotel? I play almost exclusively 2p.
I also prefer Coimbra (it’s a 10 for me). But Lorenzo is still a good game, it’s like a 9
Do you like this one more than coimbra now? I'm having a really hard time deciding between the lorenzo big box or the coimbra base game
Lorenzo is the better game.
Where did you get your card holder and token box from? Etsy?
Ya, where?
Would you recommend playing with the expansion for the first play?
I do. Is not as difficult. We did it and we love it
I just wish it would work better at 2p. If you follow the rules it gets too tight. If you use a variant it gets too loose.
Fair enough
Why does it feel too tight for you?
I disagree, works perfectly at 2
I still couldnt try this game and I am not sure it is different enough from other Italian designs.
In what sense?
@@BoardGameCo I like to play Grand Austria Hotel and Marco Polo 2. But I generally dont like tight and restrictive euros.
:)
