  • ITV Tyne-Tees news bulletin of 12th September, 1991, followed by Channel Four News excerpt from the following day. During the evening of the 12th, some out of control youths had firebombed a pub and some derelict houses in the western district of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Tyne-Tees gives brief reportage, whilst the Channel Four contribution contains some analysis. Look out for a youthful Jon Snow as well as some 1980s gigantic glasses.

I remember this, people were doing crime all over the newc cos they knew the police were busy with the riots lol
I stayed home in case I got burgled lol
I remember seeing a stolen car driving like a luni, with spray paint on saying "Come and catch me if you can" lol
Back then they'd steel 4-5 cars per night
Hence why insurance for cars went thru the roof then

the problem was the joyriders newcastle at that time was the ram raid capital of the world and they were rioting over police tactics in dealing with the joyriders they had a habit of forcing them off the road but it was the joyriders and the police there

Mad wasn't It ?was only young at the time nowt would happen like that these days. I think this spelt the end of Scotswood Elswick and Benwell the government wanted the estates disbanded. All them places are ghost towns a lot of it is pulled down. It took them a few years but they done it.

I had a good friend whom was a nurse at the Newcastle general Hospital back in the day. Contrary to what some one posted. I met a cop from the West end who was a decent guy. Called Mick Scanlon. Built like a brick Crap house. He was , as he put it a 'tutor '' constable back in the day. Still remember the name of the cop he was teaching. A Cop called PC Millward. Now he '''Was an Arrogant & up his own ass,cop , who clearly didnt want to be based in Newcastle. Told us he was from Liverpool. as I remember. ( My oppo supported Millwall , thats how I remember the name) Dare say they are both retired now.
