You are one of three potters that I follow regularly on youtube Matt. I alway thought I was very motivated and inspired before I started watching the three potter's I mentioned BUT hey! seems I wasn't LOL. I'm so grateful to people like yourself that take their precious `time out` to offer this very valuable support to us. I DEFINITELY AM now more `motivated` and very much more `inspired` after watching your video contributions Matt. Thank you my friend.
This was nice. I have a love/hate relationship with planters that have attached trays. Still, it’s nice to know how to make them. Considering how many I’ve chipped, cussed, & outright broken, perhaps I’ll attempt to throw one. Keep adding bloopers. 👍🏼
Absolutely love your work! I took ceramics in high school and loved it. I was actually a natural at throwing. I was a gold key finalist with 2 of my pieces. We had to pass a test to use stoneware and then another test to be able to glaze. I've had a wheel for many years but nowhere near me to get anything fired.
Thanks for all of the tips. I wish I had known about you last February when I was in Seagrove. I would have really liked stopping by your store. Maybe some day again.
Thanks buddy! I just monetized my channel so there will be ads if its approved. wasn't sure about doing that but I plan to start making more and more regularly.
Superb explanation on your technique, each step makes sense. Thanks for lending us your knowledge. I have the incentive to step out of my comfort zone and go taller than 1 ft. !!! Will you be willing to share your glazing process? I love how you blend the colours as shown on the pieces in the intro.
Hi from Japan. I really enjoy your demonstration, but would greatly appreciate it if you would remove the background music. It makes it difficult to concentrate on what you are saying and doing. Thank you.
I apologize. Not sure I can go back and edit that now bc I may not have the video files anymore but I’m trying to be more aware of that issue in my newer videos. Thanks for the input.
Thanks for sharing.. learning pottery I appreciate tips for tool usage as I try make vases. This vase looks similar Rebecca pitcher which close with handle. Do you ever make those? I haven’t thought about starting narrow cylinder for vase I usually cut it down with tool. You make it look easy😊 would love see it glazed as finished product see glaze brakes.
That "Rebecca" is very shapely isn't she :) Who would have believed with what was to arrive not long after you made this video Matt? YES Covid2019. sigh
I am amazed at how long you can pull before your hands and clay get too dry. Is that expertise alone, your clay body choice, or does your climate help? Combination? Here in dry Central California summer temps reach triple digits, and things dry quickly, and I am a slob with water.
Gorgeous! I love your technique; thanks for the quite useful commentary; makes me anxious to sit at the wheel! I'm impressed with how clean your clothes remain - a testament to your controlled use of water. Quite an example! I'm new to your channel... what clay body do you use? Thanks for sharing your skill and expertise!
Thank you. I’m glad the video is helpful. That clay is Hestia from Highwater. I fire it to come 10-11 in my gas kiln. I use a locally mixed clay for my wood fires pieces, mixed by Starworks.
I'd say I aim for around 1/8 in thick on most pieces depending on the size of the piece. I usually leave a little more thickness where the neck will meet the body and I usually try to leave a little more thickness on the rim, mainly for looks and durability. Thanks for watching!
I would like to find out how to get more of the weight up from the bottom of the pot. I think I’m doing what’s necessary but after I check the thickness it’s always very close to the same. Inside fingers just above outside fingers or sponge. I make the “wave” and I pull. Somehow it always leaves the bottom of the pot the same thickness after 5 or 6 pulls. Can you help?
Hello I have a question it would be greatly appreciated if you could give some advice. I'm currently trying to figure out what type of clay would be good for t throwing taller pieces with out collapsing. I worked with a moist clay that i found great for tall cylinders but not for shaping. And now im working with sculptural clay with grog for strength but i can't pull up a tall cylinder or when i get it a little tall it collapses in the middle of the cylinder and can't form. I'm a little frustrated. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hello Matt, I took pottery for four years in high school (all throwing), and then 5 in college. At the end of my college days I was really good. Then do to work I have not thrown for 20 years. I finally started again and I watch a lot of tour videos. Which when I was in college lol internet didn’t really exist (well it was 1999). Anyway I was surprised to see that I had not lost ol much of my skill except! The wheels I used had 12 inch bats and sadly as yard as I tried to find a 12 inch wheel, I could only find a 9.8, and it’s bat less which sucks. So after I throw I cut them and wait 30 min then try and slide them off with a wire under them. But it doesn’t always work and I have ruined pieces. So how do you get them off easily each time? The other problem is I know I use too much water and of course that’s causes taller pieces issues. So how can I throw drier, my fingers if not wet just grip the clay like glue. I have been trying the 1 pound cylinders but still can’t get above 7 inches. I have issues throwing small pieces but not large, (think my brain is damaged)? Any ideas?
I am new in the pottery world but I think I have learned if is porcelain I do not wire under to pot once is between leather hard and bone dry used boths hands and it will come so easy....
I'm trying to study how you open so efficiently. I have been experimenting trying to pin down good mechanics and I run into trouble.. I often create a pillar in the center when I try to move the clay to the outside w my thumb. Then I end up in this back and forth situation pushing clay from middle to outside but the bottom doesn't get thinner. Oftentimes I have to actually use the back of my thumb and trace from outside to inside and it removes clay which gets wasted. It looks like you are using a good portion of your thumb and you keep pressure to the center bottom so that doesn't happen. Am I seeing this right? :) Thanks for the vids Matthew, you are awesome.
That’s a great question and a common problem. You have to try hard to pull the cylinder toward the center when pulling to help it go more straight. I’ll add this to my list of video ideas/thoughts to talk about.
I’m not going to say that I always made the best videos or music choices. But if we’re honest we can all look back and see choices we would change. Haha
I'm glad you love the video. I totally understand, that video is over a year old and I hope I have increased the quality of my videos since then in all possible ways. I apologize there's nothing I can do about that video now though. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers!

Looked for throwing taller pieces and yours popped up! It was perfect! Thank you! Gonna watch it a few times more and save!
Superb skills, fantastic to watch, and I am so happy to hear you encourage less water.

Great video as are all of your videos. The explanations you provide, the angles of the camera are very instructional.. And I'm a big fan of your work.
Thank you!

Brilliant! Thank you Matthew. You are a master of your craft.
I've watched many similar videos, and yours is by far the most polished and informative. Great job!
Beautiful vase! Your work is always fantastic. Keep up the vids, love watching you create the pieces.
Thanks buddy! I just monetized my channel so there will be ads if its approved. wasn't sure about doing that but I plan to start making more and more regularly.
Very happy that you're making videos again, they are a joy to watch. Really great explanations!
Thank you very much. I have a bit of help now and some fresh ideas as well as it’s not my busy season so I have a little more time.
Excellent video, as always.
I watch all your videos. I love your work. Great job.
I really like that catch line idea
Thank You for all your good videos. It was really nice to see the display of your finished pottery at the beginning of this one.
Thank you. I’m glad you enjoy the videos
Beautiful! So happy to see you back on the Tube!♥♥♥
Love watching how much you get out of clay. I use stoneware and mine get 1/2 your height.
Thanks Harry. 25+ years of practice sure does help get more out of the clay. Keep it up
Great Video
You are very skilled and your work is very attractive.
Great classic shape.
Super video, glad to see you back!
Zarouszz Thanks!

I plan to do some glazing videos this year but not quite sure when. stay tuned. Thanks for watching and good luck with the tall pieces!
Beautiful work as always 💞👍
This video is incredibly helpful! Thank you :)
Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Matthew, very good video explaining everything as you throw. [cliff from london].
Only recently discovered your channel. Love your explanations and impressed with your work. Motivated to try more, thank you!
Great video. How tall is the vase?
Thats is AMAZING .... I dream af being able to do that some day.
Thank you.
Boss video mate. !

Great teaching video.. thank you. Can you say what clay you are using? Grog or no? Tks
I use Hestia for my gas kiln and a 50/50 blend of new Seagrove and new Catawba from starworks for wood firing. I don’t add any extra grog

Thanks so much for taking the time to make this. Really helpful for me! Question, about how thick are the walls before you start shaping?

Great shape Matt, is your studio/shop in Seagrove?
Thank you. I’m basically in Seagrove but technically about a mile north of the city limits.

About the 7 inches... I think either you are making to wide or leaving some clay on the bottom.
Sweet pot
How is white clay prepared please

MKP, I'm startin' to get it, bud!!!! Thanks again(for the 100th time) for your awesome vids. You've made me a better potter!
Just for what I am reading sounds like your clay is way to soft or you have add alot of water.
عمل جميل ورائع
Question... I find when I pull my clay wants to expand so I have to collor my clay back in. Any advice on how to keep a good, straight cylinder?
That’s a great question and a common problem. You have to try hard to pull the cylinder toward the center when pulling to help it go more straight. I’ll add this to my list of video ideas/thoughts to talk about.
Also slow your wheel down
How much clay?
Thank you for sharing your expertise. Pity that the music prevents me from fully catching what you're saying.
Apologies. That’s an old video and it’s too late to change that now other than mute the entire video or delete it all together.
What's the cost for one.
Please remove music. I enjoy all your videos
Am having issues with glaze over here I'm Nigeria
Please I want to be your friend please I'm a ceramics student
Love your channel but this music... XD
I’m not going to say that I always made the best videos or music choices. But if we’re honest we can all look back and see choices we would change. Haha
Love the video, but you really have to kill the music. You almost lost me with whatever that was in the 3rd minute
