Still remember MAthieu Ledoux video on some USD carbon with the kizer advanced and think to myself "This is peak rollerblading, i'm gonna get a pair of these"...getting a pair of Carbon 2 with Kizer Advanced and feeling how sloppy the skate was because of the low cuff and tall frame. On parks it was amazing but city skating on them was a chore, always got left behind by my friends in FRs and Twisters.

      @@TomMoyse definitely! I’ve had some health issues in the past year and one of the things I was advised on was losing weight and being active. I hate the gym but my girlfriend suggested rollerblading and I loved the idea even though it felt out of reach. When I was little I always wanted to rollerblade, specially aggressive but where I’m from buying skates was incredibly expensive so that thought stuck with me, not knowing that for $200 I could get a decent pair of skates.

    Great overview - learnt some new things. Can’t talk about urban without mentioning Bill Stoppard tho, and before him Greg Mirzoyan and now Danny Aldridge etc. The rise in popularity was coincident with the first 1080 GoPro and the “narcissistic selfie stick”, which opened the scene to people who might not have ever considered it before, especially fitness skaters who wanted to explore their city and needed this nudge. Sunday mornings in the CBD are the best! I like the distinction you made between those who recklessly slalom pedestrians and cars vs. the more thoughtful flow skaters who make use of all the street has to offer. The lack of grinding and hanging around at one spot also define urban - it’s significantly less anti-social.

    In the 1970s, Scott Olson worked for former NHLer Ralph Backstrom selling the “Super Street Skate”, predecessor of the modern Rollerblade.
    “Anyone who meets Backstrom, though, would never know the little things, such as the fact that U.S. Patent No. 3,880,441 belongs to a company that the 67-year-old Backstrom once co-owned.
    It’s a fairly important patent in the history of skating.
    Backstrom’s Super Street Skate partner, Morris L. Silver, received the patent in the mid-1970s. It was for the original design of the in-line roller skate, he said. Backstrom never received the royalties it eventually generated because he said it wasn’t worth the battle.
    “I think we were just 10 years ahead of our time,” Backstrom said while pondering what could have been.
    “When Scott Olsen, who worked for me selling our original skate, created the Rollerblade, we couldn’t find an attorney who was willing to sue for us on contingency, so we never did anything about it. Looking back, now I wish I would have pushed harder.”

    I’d love a pair of aeon 80’s. I’m a size uk12 though & they only go up to uk11 & apparently they fit a full size small 😢 so uk10! Why do skate companies do this? Just make the skates in the size they’re advertised as!

    • @TomMoyse
      @TomMoyse  2 роки тому +1

      Yea it’s odd with the shell sizing. In the majority of cases designs start with the shell rather than the liner which then make it’s complicated getting the correct fit. It should be the other way round
