  • Neurosurgeon Allan Belzberg, M.D., and orthopaedic trauma surgeon Greg Osgood, M.D., collaborated to offer a novel way to repair the sciatic nerve of a patient - Santi - that was severed in a boating accident, paralyzing his right leg. Santi’s family traveled from Texas to Baltimore so that he could avoid paralysis due to the severe nerve damage. Dr. Osgood applied the principles of bone shortening and, subsequently, lengthening, which allowed Dr. Belzberg to successfully repair the nerve through regeneration. A water sport enthusiast, Santi has been able to return to the water while recovering. #SciaticNerveRepair #JohnsHopkins

When I first heard that nerves can be repaired I was so flabbergasted. I can't believe how medical science has evolved over time and at what stage it is today. Just wow!

What I'd love to know is this. My husband was injured nearly three years ago at work when he went to help someone and came to an abrupt halt (like playing netball). The peroneal nerve was later found to be damaged. This took a long time to be diagnosed because the insurance company were not quick to act and everyone thought it was just like a strain injury and would heal itself. However, it is permanent. Only two of the nerves in the right foot have slightly healed, one has not improved at all after 3 years. He has been living in constant pain for 3 years. He has no feeling in his right foot at all, can't voluntarily move his toes and his foot is always swollen and he can't wear enclosed shoes, only open sandals and painful every day of his life now. He cannot walk very far as the pain becomes too intense. He doesn't sleep well as the pain wakes him up in the early hours of the morning. Medical specialists at home have basically said they cannot do anything to help him. He has had scans, nerve conductions tests, you name it. I'm not one to believe that things can't ever be done. I believe where there's a will, there's a way. We can't do things together any more due to his inability to walk properly and we can't go on long walks any more or enjoy walking around site seeing on holidays.
Any ideas of someone who can help? Specialists he has seen at home here in Australia have just he's too old. I don't believe something can't be done to improve his life.
