    I’m a dog walker, have been for just over a year now and it’s been the best decision ever! Very early mornings/late nights some very hot/cold days but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. The joy the dogs get when they see I’m there to walk them is so amazing. Best job ever, especially when people have a puppy.

Also, paying folks at a rate that should be commensurate with the cost of living in New York, is a complete winner of a company. ALL HAIL The Barking Meter!!! interesting..love that the company owners care about their employees. but, almost all of the special equipment (spikey collars, leashes that pull close without a stopper etc) are illegal here in Europe. so I don’t think they are as harmless as they look

      FYI they aren't illegal in (all of) Europe. Atleast not in Sweden. Every collar for a dog can be harmful tho as long as u use it right it will be harmless. I personally wouldn't use it. I have 3 pit Bulls and I don't use any neck collar. But I know someone who did use a collar witout a stopper. She used it to learn the dog to walk beside her. (it worked) and the dog is perfectly fine.

      @maybaby13x 6 років тому +9

      Doris W I’m from the UK and I agree that I would never use a prong collar. However, the dog walkers don’t bring their own kit with them, they have to go by what the owner uses.

    • @Nmbr1fan
      @Nmbr1fan 6 років тому +13

      I would never use anything but a harness, on my dogs. Pulling at their necks is just cruel to me. Escpecially if its a choke collar or a prong collar. They're called a punishment collar for a reason, they hurt! If the owners insists on them being used, then turn the owner down. Money is not more important than the wellbeing of the animal.

    As a dog walker in NY, this video makes the job sound like a lot more fun and money than what it actually is. I walk close to 10 miles a day and it can be grueling. You don't get a lunch break because you don't have time for it and while $15 an hour sounds like a lot, you don't get paid hourly and if you're working with a company, the boss usually takes 50-60% of your earnings. The $15 per hour is specific to the length of the walk. If the walk is only a half hour, which most walks are, you make about $8 off that walk, depending on that company's prices. If you walk 10 dogs and they're all half hour walks, you're working around 8-9 hours for $80. And that's before taking taxes out. It's not an easy job, especially if your clients are high maintenance. But I love the majority of my dogs and my boss doesn't take 50% of my paycheck. So I consider myself lucky.

    • @Idkanymore
      @Idkanymore 2 роки тому

      It really depends. It sounds like you're an independent contractor. Prepandemic I got paid $15/hr dog walking boss didn't take anything just kept what the clients paid. I walked for a daycare

  • @loveforeignaccents
    @loveforeignaccents 6 років тому +251

    Yeah, don't know about walking so many dogs at once... first of all, having all of those other dogs entering different strangers' homes doesn't seem like a good idea; plus if one were to somehow get loose or get involved in a scuffle with another dog on the street (and not necessarily the pack you're walking) seems way too dangerous.
    Enjoyed the video nonetheless!

    • @CloBow01
      @CloBow01 6 років тому +19

      loveforeignaccents there definitely a lot of precautions but after some while I bet all these walkers know how to handle it. Also I bet all the dogs are very obedient, I doubt someone would put a wild dog in the hands of someone else

    • @sarahrothe3905
      @sarahrothe3905 6 років тому +7

    • @marianna3253
      @marianna3253 6 років тому +5

      I'm sure all the owners are aware that a strange dog might come into your home, they can't just let people do whatever, it's still a person's home. And I'm sure they handle each dog before accepting them to see if they're fit to be walked with other dogs.

    • @madamikunator98
      @madamikunator98 6 років тому +4

      I'm not a dog walker but I do work at a dog daycare and I honestly don't think scuffles would be a huge problem mostly because the dogs are busy walking. If the dog has something to do they're not going to fixate on a dog or try to play with the wrong dog. They're also trying to poop and pee so it's even less so possible because in my experience dogs drop everything when they have to poop lol.

      @@CloBow01 You'd be surprised. I work at a Groomers and some people drop off the craziest dogs. Sometimes we have to call the owner back because the dog won't let us even touch him/her. We have a couple of dogs that we still take in but we already know that we're probably going to get bit at some point in the process.

    Prong collars do hurt, to feel what your dog feels put it on your neck and then pull against it with your whole body weight. They are cruel, and frequently cause collapsed tracheas.

    • @slimss21
      @slimss21 6 років тому +24

      Omg.
      No.
      The prong DOES NOT sit on the trachea. If you have it that low YOU ARENT USING IT RIGHT.

    • @ariesambully5620
      @ariesambully5620 6 років тому +8

      Plus a prong is not some magical fix all device. If you put it on a dog that pulls that hard then try to walk it without doing actual proper fitting and training with it beforehand, yes it can be dangerous.

    • @MaayanLovesUnicorns1
      @MaayanLovesUnicorns1 6 років тому +5

      I used to be just like you, there’s nothing wrong with that. BUT now that I had no other option but to get a prong collar for my puppy I believe in them! I do not yank her back or pull her with all my body weight. It is actually pretty lose on her and if she decides HERSELF to try and pull me with all of her body weight, which is about 60 pounds, then it’ll gently press on her and obviously she won’t like that uncomfortable feeling and come right back. There are many people who do abuse animals and sometimes use prong collars for the wrong reason. But they are actually pretty useful if used correctly with no harm intended.

    okay.. so i dog sit for 4 years now and i love it. i have a lot to say about the video. first off you dont need to teach ppl about the different leashes and collars, its not important. the owners will provide the leash and collar/harness. secondly why do you walk multiple dogs at once? some dogs dont like each other which can cause them to fight and someone can end up being hurt. what i normally do is i usually only walk 3 dogs at a time so it is easier to look after them and so they have time to walk properly and do their business. if you walk 5+ dogs then it will be difficult because one dog is gonna wanna go one way and the other dog is going another way and the leash can get tangled and if one dog is pooping and the others want to walk, ur gonna pull on the dog that is pooping leash and the dog wont be comfortable to poo. it would be better if you want to walk multiple dogs to own a van and take the dogs to the dog park and let them loose and let them enjoy their time. thats the best way to do it. other times owner will tell you that their dog is aggressive and can only be walked by him/herself. also i would not give my key to anyone to open the door and take my dog. thats just me. i have to be in the house to see who will take my dog for a walk. unless i know you very well and i trust you then thats fine. the job is not hard if you love dogs. and i love the idea of the app so the owners can write descriptions of their dog/s and what needs to be done and give feedback on how the walk went. this is really good idea if you are busy working and cant have the time to walk your dog, a dog walker is really great. i mostly dog sit and i love the dogs i cant to take care.

    This company seems so wonderful like they really care about the owners and their wonderful dogs.
    I have to point out, these dogs are fairly well trained it seems, and the prong collar will not hurt them. If you put a prong on a dog that pulls very hard then try to walk it without doing actual proper fitting and training with it beforehand, yes it can be dangerous. The prong Should sit high up behind the ears under the jaw, not down on the dogs neck. This keeps the prongs at an even pressure that is fine for the dog like any other collar, then when the dog pulls it is given a quick correction with a pop of the collar that puts quick pressure evenly then releases immediately. The prongs do not dig into the neck when used correctly. There are 2 ways to attach to the collar as well, live ring and dead ring. The first time a prong is used on a dog it should be on dead ring. When the leash is attached to the dead ring the correction will not take as much slack out of the collar as when it is attached to the live ring. Attached to the live ring the correction is felt more because more slack is taken out, and is used if a dog does not respond to being on the dead ring. The handler is responsible for using the collar properly, and training the dog. It is the same principal with "choke chains" or slip collars, if you use them wrong it will hurt the dog. I have seen dogs hurt themselves on normal collars as well because they just pull too damn hard. Just hate that people don't know what they are talking about and have to be so judgmental.

I only work about 3 hours a day for now. Wags cool and you only walk one dog at a time for usually $15 to $17 in a half hour. Most of your time is just getting to the owners house. This was really good and tbm (strange business name. what's a "bark meter"?) sure provides top notch dog service. IDK how they don't drop off the wrong dog inside the wrong apt. lol - - Also when dropping off a dog when you have multiple dogs do you bring all of those other dogs into someone's apt. while standing there uploading your dog walking report? I just like the fact the business owners love what they do and it shows. I think this is my fav Lucie For Hire video. Prob bc I love dogs! - - Next job for Lucie...work in an ob/gym office where she does pap smears, breast exams, pregnancy tests, touches a cervix, delivers a baby and discusses the benefits of overall women's health.

    I couldn't do this job because I have hip problems but I would also probably try to steal all of them and keep them for myself. I'm a huge animal lover and while I own cats I also like dogs a lot.

    I think that entering the house in that way could get her in trouble, or the owner, sure there should be real trust between both parts or at least a surveillance system

    • @the_brinaki
      @the_brinaki 6 років тому +1

      What are you talking about? The owners are at work and the dog has to go on a walk, that's why the owners give keys to the dog walkers. It's not like she violated the door to get in and steal the dog! And it's obviously a company (a very well rounded up, I say) so it's obvious they take care of such security issues.

    So upsetting to see all those prong collars. If they “don’t hurt”, please explain how they work.

    • @greanjojototo
      @greanjojototo 6 років тому +20

      Right! That is literally why they work. It would be nice to see them walk one or two dogs at a time and teach loose leash walking. I am happy to see they take care of their workers though. Dog walking is a skill and should be compensated as such.

    • @billiedoll4560
      @billiedoll4560 6 років тому +4

      They are annoying to the animal but they do hurt and do cut into the dog if you pull hard or if the dog pulls hard which most dogs do

    • @ariesambully5620
      @ariesambully5620 6 років тому +9

      If you put it on a dog that pulls very hard then try to walk it without doing actual proper fitting and training with it beforehand, yes it can be dangerous.

      If my dog (who weighs over 100 pounds) desires to pull me with all of his weight, the prong collar will tighten up and give them an uncomfortable feeling. If he isn’t pulling like a psycho, his prong collar is actually pretty lose on him. It was honestly my last option but I’m happy I opened up to it because I hated them before. There are people out there that abuse their dogs and use prong collars with bad intentions. But I do not have any intentions of harming my babies. He also has a harness that goes into his armpits if he pulls, but sometimes he doesn’t listen to that and I don’t really want to be pulled like a rag doll by a dog who’s almost as big as I am.

    • @MaayanLovesUnicorns1
      @MaayanLovesUnicorns1 6 років тому +4

      Billie Doll they should not be cutting into a dog if is it put on correctly and is lose when they are not pulling you.
