I've been a mail carrier for 30 years. I love walking and I love dogs! I've also worked in every weather condition. I'm thinking of taking early retirement and starting a dog walking business to supplement my income. Thank you for this video.
All of this! I've been a dog walker and pet sitter for 6+ years now I *try* to slow down on the weekends but let's face it all summer long I could book for sitting and people actually get mad at you when your not available and just want to take a mini vacation yourself No sick days! Yes so true I just literally had someone say to my face "well if your sick and I have you booked for sitting your still going to come right?"
We used to walk doggy’s on the rain, but we find out that thunder is dangerous , rain is ok , but watch out for thunderstorms ⛈ .. and yes no sick days 😬.. I love your videos thanks
Okay so I have been working at a doggy Daycare for about a month now and another thing is the PULLING! What I do is every time they pull I stop and wait for the slack on the leash then we can start walking again. They usually get a bit better if not they will walk beside you. Some dogs will be more stubborn and strong though so you gotta watch out for that. I can't say if this works with multiple dogs as we usually walk one at a time but this is something that usually works for me even if it is just a little bit and something to be aware of
No sick days? I'm out!, lol. Thank you, this is very informative. I live in Florida, a retirement community. I don't have to drive , I walk to clients houses in the community, and that's how I got started in this business. Many dog owners would see me walking everyday, sometimes up to 8 or 9 miles, walking for fitness. So, one day I figured since I was already out here for my health, why don't I walk some dogs as well, a business was born, lol. I was not to concerned about income being retired, but it's great to have the extra for travel vacations. Thanks for all tips you share, peace and blessing.
I used to do this. I didn't take the dogs to parks. I would just drive to each house, get the dog and go for walks in the neighborhood they lived in. I didn't need to drive to a park or put the dogs in my car. I guess it depends on the situation and maybe the area. People just wanted their dogs walked while at work or on vacation. Some people just wanted the dogs taken out to the yard too. That was rare but for elderly dogs who didn't well or far anymore, that was better for them. I also spent some nights at the house where the dog lived sometimes too, when people were away. There were a couple clients whose dogs stayed with me when their humans went on vaca as well. But that was just now and then. Lots of different scenarios in this business.
Wordivore it is so much less stressful driving to each house and walking individually! If I could do it all again I would definitely do it that way. Much more sustainable in the long run (for sanity-sake lol). There definitely are lots of ways to do it
Hi hun Just found your channel and subbed. I am a 41yrs old dog walker from Yorkshire and have been doing it for 7yrs, I had to laugh at your number 1 cause it’s so true ❤
You're right! I'm 64 and I rely heavily on youtube egoscue videos to keep my body in alignment to prevent injuries! I definitely notice when my body is out of alignment (foot aches, hip pops, etc). I never get sick (knock on wood) so I'm good there, but, when I need time off, I hook up with another dog walker in the area and she fits my pups in. Especially important to eat super healthy!!!
Great video. I love how you talked about all the drawbacks of dog walking. These are all things that most people are not aware of. You really helped me make a decision about taking on a dog walking job. I've decided not to pursue a dog walking job. Thanks so much for this video.

Number 3 is sooo true. I only had 5-6 days off last year for the entire year. I walk 7 days a week with a minimum of 3 walks if weather permits. The dogs I walk hate the rain 😩
Invest in jackets to keep with you. It'll make your life easier. We used to have issues when the weather got too cold/wet at a kennel I used to work for. We'd bust out the coats for the dogs that needed them and they would generally do much better about it.
But similar is will cleaning service, all day hard wark, but only no car damage. And income is not the same every month. But I have my own dog and we do walk twice a day no matter what is the weather. He doesn't mind and me eather.
If someone doesn't want to have dogs in their vehicle (except for emergencies), they can do the style of dog walks that does not involve driving the dogs, just clients all near enough eachother to do neighborhood walks (solo or compatible groups). Each business can decide their own sick and weather policy and ideally communicate it very clearly with the contract and website. For example as a commenter said below they may have a boundary about hail, severe snowstorm, any thunder, floods, extreme ice on unsalted roads, too extreme of heat (good luck somewhere like Texas or Mississippi though), not walking when too sick or injured or emergency even if cannot give much advance notice, have an assistant who calls clients in that case, requiring client to have back-up walker ready vs. having an employee or referral, etc.
I agree with all of these! I've been walking for over a year and as an ex dancer I am kicking myself that I didn't stay on top of my flexibility. I hear you on needing to stretch out the legs each day. I get an oil change every 6 weeks and am always pushing through illness to get them out in the rain all the time. But it is the best decision I've ever made in my life. #dogwalkerlife

On your point about weather you shouldn’t walk a dog out in extreme heat as it burns the bottom of there paws and can cause extreme dehydration and other things even if you have water on you the extreme heat isn’t fit for an animal so you could initially take them to a dog pool that’s what we do with the animals in the shelter we have undercover areas and fill up mini kids pools so they can exercise

From my experience, a bike is okay if you use it to get from your home to the first client's house, but i suggest parking it while actually walking the dogs. There are many dog walkers who use a bike to get to their first client, and then home at the end of the day, but they NEVER use it while walking the dogs. That's probably your best bet
I have mixed clients some that don't want the dog walked in bad weather or the dogs don't like it and others that do. I offer pee breaks in bad weather over walks to my clients they seem to be happy with it for bad weather!
Most clients are pretty understanding, especially with heat. I will go and take the dog into the garden to do their business and play inside if it's too hot for a walk. In the rain some dogs will flat our refuse to go out so I do the same then too

Yes! Small dogs is a great niche! In a way they are easier. Be mindful about hawks. Play it safe and avoid them interacting with large dogs. For exanple, if you do dog parks, best to stick to ones with a small dog section.
Maybe because dogs are fifthly and they're a menace? They need be in parks miles away from people. They're also a stupid pet to have given that the stupid mutts require walking every day.

I've been watchig a lot of these kinds of videos lately, and when it comes to the cons of dog walking, no one has yet mentioned the dangers or hazards of being a dog walker. I use a wooden walking stick on my walks in case I come across strays or other dangers. Have you ever felt the need to 'carry' on walks?
I am dog walking in America but I am brazilian and I missing some vocabulary when it comes to report the activities to the dog owners. Could anybody help with that?Thankx
Hi. I'm 18 years old and I'm from Barbados. I really want to start doing this dog walking business. I've done research on the internet, contacted other animal lovers for advice and I think I'm on my way. They suggested I do voluntary work first for to get a feel of what I'm singing up for, print flyers and business cards and distribute them in animal clinics. I think I'm ready. Any advice for someone who is starting out. Barbados is a very small island. I now have to think of prices
Are there conditions when a dog walker does not walk the dog? For instance is there a temperature at which you don't, or perhaps in heavy rain? Do you cancel the appointment?
All dog walking buissnesses run their company differently. As someone who does this professionally, I have found to have had a different experience with the second and third points brought up in this video. Firstly, as buissness owners whose job it is to care for and ensure a dog's wellbeing I think it is unwise to walk dog's in heavy rain, hail, really hot weather etc. So for my buissness I usually postpone walks for a later date and at a discounted rate. I also make sure that before a client takes up my dog walking service that they are fully aware of my limitations (such as not walking when there is lighting close to the area I am walking or when I am unwell and cannot physically handle walking-this is okay to do as long as clients get enough notice and communication is clear. Also it reduces the chance for dog's being potential vectors for your sickness as well as safe gaurding vulnerable clients, who in my case, are often older in age and have medical conditions). I do this because safety for the dog's I walk, the local community and myself. I think it is unwise to walk dog's in such dangerous conditions as it only increases the dog's stress levels (which could cause the dog to be unpredicatable), your chance of obtaining an injury and sickness and the probability of loosing the dog even when you think the dog is fully secured. This is particularly true for group walks. For me, personally, I don't use car's so in those instances people have more options. It is important that as dog walker's, we think about not only our buissness image but also the quality of care we are providing, if a dog walker gets injured from tripping due to wet weather and cannot walk for an extended period than that is far worse than a cancellation or postoning and explaining the reasons as to why you made that decision. I have found clients to be more receptive when being more cautious rather than taking avoidable and let's face it unnecessary risks. Dog walker's are the one's providing their service, so they are well within their right to not walk due to such reasons. That is still professional, so their shouldn't be any shame surrounding it.
How much money do you bring home exactly in a week.? I would definitely do This kinda job cause I like walking and also have a pet. My biggest question does it have benefits!!!
@@theimperialfistsspacemarin3050 of course you can! Work hard and build your clients up. I earn enough doing one on one walks and work about 4 hours per day. If you're lucky enough to live close by to a good enclosed space and have a car or van you are great! Easy earn £40+ an hour
Ive been at it for 14 years doing around 20 miles a day on foot it has definitely taken its toll on me today was a bad day i have managed ok but one dog is really testing me ans the only reason I'm walking her is customer loyalty if it was a new customer id say sorry no she needs a behaviourist I'm better with aggressive dogs than nervous ones that are constantly cannon balling in deferent directions and killing the nerves in your arms .common issue with Romanian rescue .
You set your own prices, depending on how long you will walk the dog for, have a look at other dog walkers prices in your area so you can get an idea of price range. If you have friends or family with dogs try with theirs first or offer a couple of voluntary walks just so you can see if you enjoy it, plus word of mouth is fantastic for getting new clients :)
Think about the risks, if the dog bites you or someone, if another dog attacks your dog? If your clients dog escapes or trips up a jogger. Insurance providers may not cover under 18yr olds
Two questions: What do you do when you have to deliver dirty dogs home? And I saw a video where you wore a red belt. Do you know where I could get one?
Great question! You can keep towels in your vehicle and ask clients to have a towel by the door ready for rainy/muddy/snowy days and a doormat where you may wear your messy shoes on since it'd take too long probably to remove shoes at each home. Ask them if they have a hose for if the dog got that messy. Keep an eye out for available hose or water spout near your route like at dog parks. Also have waterproof shoes or boots and maybe waterproof socks. P.S. Having a different pair of shoes in trunk to change into at end of shift can feel SO good!
Yes. Many people do. But it depends. Do the math: How many hours a week are you comfortable consistently driving and walking in most weather? How many dogs at once are you comfortable walking and what is that city's or park's laws on that? What price would you charge? Woukd you be self-empliyed or work for a company who takes a portion of your profit? I'm not asking for your answers, just suggesting you think on that.
I used my own car, which was a Kia Soul. This obviously limited the amount and size of the dogs that could go into the car. Most dog walkers that I know upgrade once they've saved up enough money to get a van, so if you're planning on doing it long-term than that's something to aim for because there is more space
I really like your videos I’m twelve and I want to start a little business so I can make some money. I live in Arizona and summers are hot but for me it’s not that bad so most people wouldn’t walk there dog but I will. So do you have any tips? I also got to a really hard school
Of course! I'm thinking of doing a video about walking dogs in the heat (my parents live in Houston, Tx, so even though I don't walk dogs professionally there I definitely have some experience! Let me know if there's anything in particular you want help with
How are you able to fill up your day walking only. I usually can only fill 10-3 spots then need to turn people away because they all want the same times
Most people do want that middle of the day timeslot, for sure! I had some clients that wanted morning solo walks, so that filled my morning up before the group walks started around 10am. I usually finished around 3, but I considered it a full day since I started earlier

Yes! Small dogs is a great niche! In a way they are easier. Be mindful about hawks. Play it safe and avoid them interacting with large dogs. For exanple, if you do dog parks, best to stick to ones with a small dog section.
#5 without a doubt!
May I ask how many dogs by once you took in a single walk?
Great video!!! Thank you!!
Why can’t u walk them in the neighborhood???
Maybe because dogs are fifthly and they're a menace? They need be in parks miles away from people. They're also a stupid pet to have given that the stupid mutts require walking every day.
@@toby9999 humans carry many diseases and stds dog do not have. Humans also walk every day. Ur logic is trash. Moron. Delete ur account and stop spreading ur hate
What do you do if you need the bathroom??
Hey, I really like the starting-track's beats. Do you mind sharing the full link to that track? Great video btw :-)
How do you get the money? Do you get it in cash, cheque or an account??
It depends on what the owner prefers. Usually, it'll be an e-transfer, but sometimes they will also leave cash
Damn all this walking just sounds like my job. I walked anywhere from 14-18 miles a day every day I work says my Apple Watch.
Also.... poop 💩 🤣 always be aware of the poop
Thank you for sharing
what is the best age to start dog walking i'm 11 and really want to start but i want to know if this
if your 11 no one will accept you, too young
What dog walking company is the best to work with? Thank you. 👍🏼
That really depends on where you're located! They're very different depending on the country and city
You are AWESOME
Adon-Mariah Bradshaw I know someone who’s look for a dog walker. Text him. 680-333-9010
Hello, I like your videos a lot!, thank you! I am just starting under Thedognan and I don’t know how much to charge for dog sitting
Awesome video!
If youre in an area that gets 4 seasons this would get tiresome. Being out there in late fall and winter would be torture. I cant do cold rain.
so what im hearing is im gonna have super fcn toned legs hahah
Thanks for the great vid! :D
*I train service dogs professionally and I heard NO lies about the inevitable condition of your car being spoken.* 😁
Great video. Subscribed.
What happens if you have school during a job?
You are the best
How many dogs do u Normally walk
How much money do you bring home exactly in a week.?
I would definitely do This kinda job cause I like walking and also have a pet. My biggest question does it have benefits!!!
Dog walking is fun and yes if you are successful🏆💪 you'll get up to 100$
@@btsforlifeu7751 you cant even make 25 percent of what the minimum is to survive 100 bucks is waay too low
@@theimperialfistsspacemarin3050 of course you can! Work hard and build your clients up. I earn enough doing one on one walks and work about 4 hours per day. If you're lucky enough to live close by to a good enclosed space and have a car or van you are great! Easy earn £40+ an hour
Love this 😀
as someone who plays tournaments (4-5 games a day) do lots of stretching beforehand and you will be perfectly fine walking
Hi...
Madam how much fee charged in one month.
Plzzzz... Tell me
True I started dog walking this week and my body and feet are dead
I’m gonna take breaks at 12:00 pm for an hour
Im a kid i want to walk dogs and all of that is ok for me but im wondering how much money they will pay me
You set your own prices, depending on how long you will walk the dog for, have a look at other dog walkers prices in your area so you can get an idea of price range.
Thanks for this video.
Two questions:
What do you do when you have to deliver dirty dogs home?
My neighbors are going away for the week I’m going to walk their dog before I actually start dog walking!
Thanks

Can you make enough money from dog walking for it to be your main job?
With company like Rover, Wag, I doubt it. I know some successful dog walker quit the business and write a book or held a dog walking seminar.
Have good shoes! Stretch! Get pain pill prescriptions! I'm in Sooo much pain!
Try morenga. Just ordered my first bottle, supposedly a life changer.
I use oxyctin every day, it's been great!
0:10 I love that dog the confusion what breed is s/he
What car did you use for dog walking?
Let me know if there's anything in particular you want help with
Are there poop scoops involved ...!!
I would love to do dog Walking. Only for an hour a day at first then go to 2 hours a day
Shiane Malipising yes, it’s definitely a good idea to ease into it! Your body will thank you lol
I’ve been doing this 20 years… All you’re doing is being a big baby about things
I’m 14 I wanna start dog walking due to my mom not being able to work
I’m 70 and walk my shih tzu 4 hours a day
