Didn't see it myself but can see how some people thought it was real - it was quite professionally done for the day. Tragic stories of people it harmed. Thanks for your work, as always thoroughly researched and great articulate narration.
To my mind, where the show departed from "a good scare" was in the casual inclusion of a lot of harm to animals (yard strewn with puppy foetuses? really?), and child sexual abuse ("a convicted child raper lived here!!"). I also recall an interview with the writer where he was smugly gleeful about how badly his work had affected people. From frightening to nasty.
I didn't spot Pipes at all, but when you mentioned, that you are glad you experienced this show, I rembered the TV moment I experienced myself. the alien autopsy! they showed it here on german TV =)
I only heard about this broadcast a year ago. It seems like it fooled A LOT of people. But if I'm not mistaken..quite a few people who watched this really were affected by it. Didn't some viewers actually begin seeing "Mr Pipes" in their own homes and start experiencing hauntings/poltergeist activity???🤔 Thank you for another wonderful and informative video. ❤🤗❤ I've watched every one of your videos at least once. The topics you choose to cover are truly fascinating. ❤
I watched this when it was broadcast, I was 14, I watched the whole thing but switched over just as it started, I honestly believed it was real until the end when it all went crazy, but when I went to school there were loads of other students talking about it like it was real and I was shocked at how they could be so easily fooled if they really watched it to the end.
Sadly I can't remember if I watched it at the time but I'm aware of the show, no doubt it had an influence on that later mockery of a show "Most Hated..I mean Haunted." Can't think of a better You Tuber to summarise this programme though, you did a fantastic job. I feel ancient now knowing I have 8 years on you, I wont lie, I had you down as older, going on your voice 🤣 Anyway, thanks for an entertaining 40 minutes..jobs a good un 👻💀👻
There was a TV programme on the BBC at the time called Hospital Watch, a daytime documentary that followed the goings on in a hospital. It was hosted by, among others, Sarah Greene and Mike Smith, which lent Ghost Watch some credibility.
I saw it when I was 10 & thought it was real…until the climax. But why would I think it was fake? Mockumentary was not a word back then. And Michael Parkinson wouldn’t lie to me 😄
That's just it. The BBC trailed Ghostwatch as part of Screen One. The outrage and confusion that followed perplexed me, personally. It just goes to show how swept up and guliable viewers were. I blame the BBC for giving us Most Haunted with another ex-BBC host called Yevette Fielding. 😂😂😂😂😂
Well i have a disgusting smell that emanates from my plug hole, stains on my clothes (enough about that), & the central heating goes on the blink all the time, the house can get freezing, And there are crashing & bangings from my walls alright, which clearly can't be caused by the neighbours & their 3 young girls, definitely, & the area under my stairs is sealed up! Oooh. The Beeb should do a new show from my place? As for this show i was unaware of it until recently, dont know what I was doing back then, & never seen it so thanks for this potted resume & the accompanying expose of all the clues it was a fake and naming the actors, with their other TV appearances, did people not recognise them & smell a rat?.
Why on Earth doesn't this channel have a Million subscribers yet?
This is GREAT stuff!
Because it's not the kind of drivel the general public watch en mass.
I wish I did have a million

I have this on dvd. Watched it when I was a child with my dad. Scared the hell out of me. Always give it a watch every so often.

Yeah, good shout actually

It’s strange to me how gullible and easily frightened people were back then. Maybe I’m just desensitized idk.
