Controversial Wrestling Slam

  • Illegal slam at a wrestling tournament between a Dunedin and an Eastlake wrestler. I started recording after the Dunedin (red) wrestler pushed the Eastlake (blue) wrestler in the chest and they began to fight. The Dunedin wrestler slams the Eastlake wrestler at 5:00
Edit: Now that I watch this again, I realize the Eastlake wrestler faked his injury and no, I don't think the guy was on steroids. I just said all that stuff in the heat of the moment.

Yeah, he should have put him in an MMA arm bar and snapped it like a twig. Oh wait - this is wrestling - not kick boxing, not MMA, not boxing. Technique and control matters - you CANNOT spike a guy neck first into the ground - that's illegal, dangerous, etc. Just like you can't facemask or spear tackle in football - unsportsmanlike conduct and dangerous/illegal moves should get you ejected. Yes, throws and takedowns in wrestling are allowed - neck spikes ARE NOT allowed.

As a former wrestler and current wrestling coach, I think what got the wrestler in red in trouble here is that the rules say when you lift your opponent off the mat, you are responsible for bringing them down safely. If you look closely, the first part of the blue wrestler's body that touches the mat is his head. That, combined with the amount of force put into the slam, is why the ref stopped the match and signaled a "potentially dangerous" illegal move penalty (putting his hand behind his head).
In my personal opinion, the slam was borderline and could've been called either way. Tough break for the red wrestler.

HaqueSMASH hi bud. Yes you are correct, single hand high croch lift. It is a common back or front side lift. However. The reason this was illegal. The kid hit the ground head first. In high school and lower age brackets. The USA national rule is, no matter the take down, no matter the speed of the shoot, throw, or drop, the person cannot hit the mat head first. In the state of Florida. The thrower must make contact on the mat before the throwie, and the throwie cannot contact the mat head first.
So go and check out the take down again. @5:00 minutes.
This single hand lift requires you to lift your opponent to his toes or freely into the air, then rotate the opponent in the air with the non lifting hand.
I honestly think this kid sliped from sloppy technic and without him having concern for safty. I do not think he intended to drop him on his head. But with three other fups...

Unnecessary force is a judgment call by the referee.

It wasn't that bad. I've been thrown harder off my skis, my skateboard and ice in my driveway. Laughed and got up every time.

The title is misleading. I'm not sure if I saw anything controversial other than the 2 pt takedown that took some extra time to get called. An official might interpret Red shoving Blue out of bounds, but blue should be working back to the mat and Red is just wrestling. So nothing to call there. I was surprised with the reaction from the crowd.
It is a Slam, when the Red wrestler returns the Green wrestler on their head. No official should see it differently. It is not an intentional slam. Red is trying to put his opponent directly to his back, and if done in control, completely legal. The moment Red takes Green into the air, Red is responsible for getting Green back to the mat safely.
For everyone that thinks this slam was legal, these are high school kids. How many times do I need to drop you on your head before you agree it should be illegal?

I got DQ'd for something similar. Sometimes the weaker athlete provokes situations like these. In my case the kid kept throwing up his hands when I could not get in on a sweep single or blast double. So when I finally got in deep on a shot I scooped him up and slammed him as hard as I could. He cried and laid on the mat for like 15 mins. Woulda been by 100th win but I had to get it later on in the team tournament. Glad it was a team tourny and not one that was individual.

Muscle memory can sometimes be a bitch.. if the opportunity opens ... OOOH WELLS! Im sorry but I trained to win not to show Mercy..it's a combat physical sport. I say get tough.. and if you get the shit slammed out of you. lurn how to recover fast or take a loss with your spirit held high shake the man's hand and say I'll get you next time..

Back in the sixties, your knee had to hit the ground before your opponent’s body, else you’d be disqualified. Safety was paramount.

I think this is likely the one and only time that dude in blues hand was lifted and people cheered for him in his career as a wrestler.

Roids would not do a 17 or 18 year old any good. 2nd the kid in blue is putting on a great act, watch the slam, it wasnt that hard, finally the kid in red is a far superior wrestler, he wrestles fantastic aggressively the kid in blue wrestles like a susie(scared). Good job red.
