    Whatever is out there is it. They already finished tinning everything they had in stock. It's all done. The doors have been closed.
    Thank you government for destroying yet another business 😠
    But lets give the McNiels a huge round of applause and thanks for the many years and hard work they have put into their product.

    What's bad is that these regulations will mostly hurt the companies that actually care about the product. Companies that specialize in pipe tobacco, those who will spend hours crafting great blends, will get hit the hardest while cigarette and "gas station" cigar manufactures will take the hit and be just fine.

      Hi John. I was holding back my lamentation because I didn't want to sound like a fluff, but truth be know, I'm devastated. I'm personally not much of a Virginia smoker, but Frog Morton Cellar was (and is) my all-time favorite blend. There is not another blend that can touch that blend in my opinion. The closest would be a Dunhill English, and you know they have stopped producing as well. I'm sorry, brother.

      Anthony Adams Sorry for you as well. McClellands 5100 Red Cake was my favorite blend. They have been out for a while. So I have been trying to find something similar. I have been smoking Sutliffs Red Ribbon very close but not the same. But am getting used to it. You may want to try GL Pease they have a lot of Latakia blends to choose from. Never acquired a taste for the Latakia. Good luck finding something you truly enjoy! May all your smokes be dry and cool.

    This is honestly terrible news. It makes me wonder what are he regulations for growing tobacco privately... Muttnchop... a new video perhaps? Regulations on privately growing tobacco? I will be sure to stock up as much as I can, despite my youthful age of 21. Muttnchop, could you sometime make a video of all the different types of tobacco lighters, and which ones you prefer and why? I think that would be super helpful and informative. I haven’t found one of your videos that covers that, and I apologize if I looked over it.

      @rowan1043 6 років тому +1

      Well thank you very much for the replies. I truly wish all of you the very best, and that seems like a bit of an interesting loophole with growing. Say for instance, I grow a specific type of tobacco that was deemed (this would not happen) to have 2X the amount of nicotine, and greatly increases your risk of tongue cancer (again, an example). So the FDA says they don’t want that to be available to the mass market, BUT you can still GROW it for yourself and smoke it all you want? That doesn’t make a right bit of sense. Any other ideas with this?

      Matt Shaw yes that dimension also has to be kept in mind. This affects workers as much as consumers. Smoking for me is a pleasure and an interest, but for some it is their livelihood. The more pressure the industry faces, the harder it will be for those folks to redeploy and retrain into alternative work. Those still in work will be feeling under threat and wondering if they're next. We the community have a responsibility towards them as well.

      Yeah, not to sound like a drama queen, but I am absolutely devastated by this news. I love Frog Morton Cellar so much that it is almost like a miracle medication for my stress levels. God I hope these pipe tobacco companies stop going out of business! I don't know if it is true or not, but one of my local tobacconists told me that cigarette companies are putting these pipe tobacco companies out. Again, that is one person's claim, so take it with a grain of salt. But, she is in the industry so she could possibly be correct.

    McClelland was its worst enemy. They went far to big with far to many blends. They had 234+ blends. Most of which were blah, overly thick flakes and aromatics that were tasteless. Sure they had some real winners, but far to many that didn’t sell as good as they had hoped. I’m sorry to see them go but I saw this coming about five years ago. R. I. P.
    Side note; it’s also exceedingly hard to compete with Africa, Mexico, and South American tobacco. High quality, low price, and an abundance of it.
    Will C&D succumb? I sure hope not.

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  6 років тому +1

      graycloud057 - I tend to agree, maybe if they had reduced the amount of blends they were selling to say 100, they might have survived. C&D Is backed I think by smokinpipes.com, I have been to their factory, it’s connected, and sits right behind smokingpipes, so I think they might be ok, but they aught to think about reducing blends as well. 👍👍👍

Dunhill however is a global brand and impacts a lot of us. But UA-cam does have a tendency to make it seem very important to more than a small fraction of pipe smokers. I stocked up two months ago.
    I purchased the two blends i wanted.
    40th anniversary and balken beauty in quantity. I have other mc blends. Mostly older than 10 years. So

    FDA ruins people’s fun again. I started smoking pipes a few months after this happened, so I never got to experience any of their blends, so highly recommended by so many. I do see people selling them sealed on ebay, so might have to splurge one day.
    Would you say it’s worth spending $50 or so on a 100g tin?

  • @jeffallenbrand2142
    @jeffallenbrand2142 6 років тому

    Also it is important to note that MacNeil never trained anyone to replace him and he was never going to sell his recipes. So at some point it was all going to end. The FDA just forced them out early. Dunhill had two things going on. 1- they were off the market in 2/2007 so would have to get approved. 2- the EU put in plain packaging regs that forbid trademark logos. While the owners of Dunhill don't really care about tobacco, they are obsessive about their brand. The new EU regs are a bridge too far. So with only the USA and emerging markets left it wasn't worth the risk to pay for approval when they don't know what will happen next. My guess is that Dunhill will come back if and when the regulatory environment changes in a more positive direction.

    I have to make a comment about trying to smoke flakes or coins in whole form. I believe the answer is very simple and I'm surprised it hasn't been figured out. It comes down to your mechanics. Let me explain, if you know how to build a fire you will be successful. Your fire will depend on the mositure level, size and type of fuel.
    Part of the coins and flakes should be broken up like kindling and the large pieces mixed with them. Arrange your light pieces at the bottom of the bowl, large pieces on top and more lighter pieces on top. This is one example. Ive been smoking a pipe for one year and cigars for 8yrs. I may not have been smoking long but I know more than one way to build a fire.

    Putting this in perspective. I am a recent entrant to this hobby, so if I started this year I would be ignorant of this brand. Saying that and taking McClelland at their word, are quality tobaccos on their way out across the board? If they couldn't get quality leaf, then who can?

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  6 років тому

      That's what worries me, 1 of 2 things, or probably both things will happen, the dedicated tobacco blending houses will close up shop because they don't want to scrimp on quality, others will get whatever tobacco they can, quality or no and continue to blend substandard pipe tobacco. either way, its not good for us. :( :( :(

    Muttnchop it's not just the FDA. They wanted to retire! 40 years is a long time. I have pasted a blurb from smoking pipes.
    "Mary and Mike McNiel of McClelland worked like sled dogs for more than 40 years to maintain the highest quality possible of their products. They worked insane hours, seven days a week. Mike would sit up for 15 hours at a time just making sure the moisture content was right on a particular blend, for example, checking it every five minutes, adjusting fans, being compulsive, which is what was required. For the past several years he has worked in severe pain because of a back injury that would have required too much time away from work to fix. "

    It's been said many times: Tobacco will never be cheaper or more easily available than it is now. Eventually internet sales will get cut off. Blenders will be forced to shutter businesses made unprofitable for a number of reasons. Find what you like and cellar deeply so that you can be assured to have what you enjoy (presuming it's a type of tobacco that ages well).

    I'm a pipe smoker from Prague and unfortunately I can get only 250g of American tobacco per person max and someone needs to bring that back from US in their luggage. Everything tobacco related sent in a post package gets stopped at the airport and gets burned or marked with like 500% tax mark up. I am a lot into English and Balkan blends, so of course McClelland was on my wishlist of tobaccos my travelling friends are slowly going through, but I guess it is too late. All I was able to do was to acquire larger amount of Dunhill Nightcap from Germany for my "cellar" and that was for the original pre-end price. I guess it's actually good that I never tasted the Latakia legends from the Frog Morton series. I would probably miss them now. But on the bright side there is still a lot I can taste and look forward to from companies like C&D, G.L. Pease, H&H, Captain Earle or Seattle Pipe Club. Btw I dunno if you have heard about German blender called Hans Wiedemann and his HU Tobacco blends, but they are awesome and (even a little spoiled) Americen pipers should definitely try them.
