This video couldn’t have come out at a more perfect time.. I’ve recently fallen in love with the Fuji X100Vi and I still adore my Nikon Z8.. but here I was hovering over the pre order button for the Leica q3 43 because a couple mates have Leicas and the idea of having one sounded appealing.. but I’m having SO much fun with my gear right now.. why spend £5900.. thanks Roman
Knowledge is as close and easily referenced as the smart phone in my pocket. It’s the camera’s “spec sheet.” Wisdom is another matter entirely. It comes from “work, dedication, time and patience.” Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
Great video ! I'd much rather spend money on travel these days. GAS is easier to avoid if you frequent photography forums less ! Everyone online seems obsessed with the latest, greatest and convincing themselves they need it. I recently got a beat up X-Pro 1 and have started using my X-T1 again because I like the tones and colours from X-Trans v1 and X-Trans v2 - AF is pretty crap on these cameras but I don't care, you learn to work around it. And 16MP is plenty enough for 99% of photography. The bonus is I can visit anywhere and not really care too much about getting my kit stolen because it's not worth that much.
This. I have multiple Canon cameras for work but still treasure my X-Pro 1. The images are something special and it's so slow it's almost like shooting film, but without the hassles of film.
The ergonomics, does it feel good in your hand for a long time, this is for me the most important feature. As you say, any camera from the last 3-5 years will focus great. Thanks for the video!
I’ve just gone “backward” to a dslr from a mirrorless due to ergonomics. It just felt right but now I need to get used to where everything is again and also not having a good idea of the image before I press the shutter
I am using a ten year old 7D and even older 17-55 2.8 , perfectly happy with it. Got a Fuji xt5 about 18 months ago as I wanted a lighter camera for the street. But the canon is still used extensively during travel

Roman, Another excellent video, so thank you. I only wish I could have watched this video, and taken your advice to heart, when I was a much younger person. I only, later on in life, in my 60’s, discovered the joy of using one of the many iterations of Fuji’s X100 series camera (I’ve owned them all). The joys of not having to worry about the decisions required about the lenses to carry, and all of the ancillary accessories was rather enabling, and my photography started to bring me joy again. That simple camera, as you put it, was a joy to use, carry, and produced many excellent images. So, thank you for this advice.
Size and weight are very important ...as I discovered in the past. 100% agreed. MP and all the other features not so much. Look to photos from the past to be convinced. Good video - smart words 🎉
Very sensible real world summary of a sound approach to photography - one without special needs. Totally agree on what you said even though on occasion I do like telephoto shots. So sometimes it is horses for courses.
I appreciate your videos like this - just sensible and real, and encouraging us to love the art and remember why we have this gear in the first place :)
i agree with everything except your choice of lenses. Having 24-70 and 35 in fact is just duplicating the same (you can set 35 on 24-70). IMHO much more versatile is using two bodies - one compact hight quality body (I use for this Ricoh GRIII) and second with light telephoto (70-200), I use R6 + 70-200 F/4 due to its compactness. This or similar setup is much more versatile in travel photography and you really shall try this - you will soon find out, how much oportunities you're missing by not using 70-200 lenses. Such lenses don't interfere with people's privacy zone and enable you to cut out any unnecesary trash from the scene. Rgds,
Next you'll tell me that I should eat my vegetables and cut down on the beer. But seriously, this is all spot on and I feel like you're describing my exact actions for the last 10 years. I wonder though, is it possible to learn this without going through it yourself? I've told myself countless times already, there's no point in getting new gear if you're not taking good pictures. I watch my old pics taken with cameras and lenses I sold years ago and I find myself going "wow these look great, why did I sell this gear?". But then morning comes around and I've ordered a new expensive camera and sold my previous one. I mean I do enjoy most of the gear I buy, but it's almost like an expensive disease. Great video and great points! But they will do no good! :)
Sound of rationale. Until GAS hits at Fridays after few beverages 😂 I used to have Canon EOS R7. I didn't use almosta at all. I changed it into Nikon Z fc. Much inferior in many tech specs. I am loving it. Great retro gadget to take out in the wild.
GAS hit me!! After only one beverage I bought John Hedgecoe's New Manual of Photography from 1987 I believe. It promises to tell everything about newest camera gear in business. I wonder if Leica Q3 43 is included 🤣
This video matches how I have felt lately. I recently purchased a couple cameras from 1994-2006 for under $200 and not only have had a blast shooting them but really enjoy the photos.
Great video ,Roman. I have 7 Fuji lenses (& a XT4 & XS20 ) trying to get down to 4, but a lot of scammers bite first. Got into the Fuji system in or about 2018. Great product, enjoying photography. Was comparing my Photo exif files of my last 3 or 4 European trips & found that the year I was using a Canon G7x , I had difficulty differentiating between the two. That concerns me somewhat as I just saw 2 Canon G7Xs for sale.....That proves mine & your comments, it's quality image not image quality.
I think I did my best photos 30yrs ago when all I had was a manual SLR and two prime lenses. No distractions. Just simple tools and a passion to create
I like the sony rx100 1" sensor camera or small dji osmo pocket 3 because of the things you have said. It's fun and very portable. Also flying business class will never wear off for me. It's not novelty, because comfort while flying, especially for long duration, makes traveling a lot easier.
Everything you said is why I haven't got an expensive mirrorless Fujifilm camera. I'm still enjoying the backward technology of Canon's APS-C DSLRs and their massive range of EF and EF-S lenses. I might buy some 2nd hand L glass one day when one drops into my budget range. BTW, I like printing my good shots. Is this why gigapixels don't make me empty my wallet on demand? Who knows?
Completely agree. I started with a A7 III because it was my dream camera, 3 years later I found myself wanting another camera because it’s such a hassle carrying it due to its size personally. I recently got an Xe4 and that original spark I had with photography came again.
Words to live by! Having started photography as a student without budget to keep up with the latest trends kind of made me learn this early on 😅 a tip in this regard is to buy ´old generation ´ camera´s that are being sold with discount when a new version gets released. My main camera is the panasonic s5 but often i´ll take the fuji x100t for family outings, and for nature/macro I still use the sony a200 and a57 😊
Love your perspective on all this. It's like vaccine against GAS for me. Especially on Leica Q3 43 video release day. (I'm not a dentist or a barista, so I'm not allowed to buy it anyway.) Focus on experiences is the way. Thanks, Roman.
I used to walk around with two Canon R6 cameras and a bunch of lenses at all times, including a telephoto. Was way to heavy, and made it less fun to go out shooting. Now I've reduced my equipment down to a Leica M-P 240 and a simple 35mm lens. Much happier this way, and shooting is fun again. Objectively it's a worse camera. Worse in low light, less dynamic range, outdated menu. But it weighs significantly less, is fun to use, and still takes phenomenal photos. I bring it everywhere I go, and I no longer need a backpack. I still kept one of my modern cameras and the telephoto for the few times I need them for work, but for the most part they stay at home. The rest I sold.
Great advice. Although there is one feature not all cameras have, which I really love and use quite frequently. Micro 4/3s Live Composite. Is the beast you can get for lightning and fireworks. And there are a ton of creative uses for it as well. BTW, you were followed by an orange shirt dressed lady all the time. Tell her don't be shy and and say hi to the camera. ☺
Really is interesting, I enjoy your style and comments on cameras make real sense to me. Bloody true, I love the gadgets but hardly touch them while something you less like always with you with the idea oooh if it’s stolen or drop it it’s okayed, real stupid!
I have 3 cameras - but the one I use the most is my Panasonic lx10 at 290gms and tiny - it’s fantastic for travelling together with my dji osmo P3 - fits in a small back pack
Good, down to earth perspective on street photography. I use 6 different systems (yeah camera hoarder here) and over the yrs i have learned that ill certain cameras for certain situations, but in the end it is about light and composition.
The only point I would amend is that a third lens, a telephoto lens, is very useful in many situations, particularly involving action such as sports or wildlife.
Great points, buy gear you will use regularly and enjoy using. One thing I have noticed that gear at similar price points tend to have similar overall specs ($1200 mirrorless bodies are similar enough specs that it really doesn't matter which you buy). Also, I switching or upgrading gear without a solid reason for your situation should be avoided.
I’m using an Olympus OMD camera, I love its size, weight and feel. But I’m moving to Fuji soon. I’ve used my camera so much now that it’s just become to much of the same thing. Fuji seem to have many extra abilities over my camera and that’s what I believe will improve my photography over time. I’m not going for a super expensive Fuji, but just one that gives me the ability to keep learning and progressing.
I completely agree with all you say here. The challenge for us all is (i) ignoring the noise from camera manufacturers eg advertising, spec creep including for fuji only making 40mp x-t bodies now, larger lens creep to cope with large sensors etc, (ii) ignoring the Internet chatter about big, expensive, lots of gear is best / a necessity and (iii) ignoring fome, gas etc that can drive our own minds. So there are a lot of forces working against us regarding much of your advice here, but we must persevere. Regarding fuji, i am certainly no expert, I just think the direction they have been moving which I allude to above is very unfortunate, though unsurprising and probably inevitable. Aslo, new gear is just getting so much more expensive eg x-t50 v 30 new when both were released. Finally an irony in the whole thing is that for 95% of us who arent pros or top amateurs, that so much of the money we spend for cameras (and perhaps lenses to a lesser extent) is for features we never use or know how to use. It's a shame they can't cater for that market. Good video and love your channel.
Cheers much, for me size and autofocus is important as I don't want to lug a big camera and lenses around all day and our animals are fast in Australia, unless it's asleep 😂😊❤
Had a a7iv with big heavy glass.. sold it all.. had a fuji x100 bla bla bla.. sold that off too.. I still have my pentax q though... small, light, and I can fit 3 lenses in one pocket... its fun, and it keeps shooting fun.
Excellent video, Roman. Regarding the lenses, I assume you are referring to FF equivalents (24-70 and 35)? So for Fuji APS-C, that is 16-55 and 23, correct?
If you bought a great camera years ago, It's still a great camera! My Leica M3 is 57 years old used pro and fun since new! It still a great camera and lens is super 50mm Collapsible Summicron f2! I've moved to tiny digital cameras or phone. When I have a project, it's Ziggy, my M3!

The photos look amazing, which preset are you using? Thank You!
I’ve spent a lot over the years on cameras and lenses: micro 4 thirds, APSC and full frame. While I love and use many of them, some of the most fun I’ve had, and some of the best images I’ve taken were with the original Olympus OMD EM5 and an 18mm lens. Super fun, and ultimately, image quality wasn’t as important as the quality images I captured with it.
Yes... And a Hyundai Matiz brings you to the supermarket as well as an Austin Martin. But... since most people who buy a camera also do it for the fun and enjoyment (believe me guys, if you are in it for the money there are easier ways to get rich) the camera can be a big part of the joy! There is nothing wrong with loving your gear ☺️
I shoot black and white film with a Canon VT Deluxe fitted with a Voightländer 21mmf4 LTM MC. I shoot color with a Nikon D700 fitted with a Nikkor 24mm f2.8 AIS lens. Simple as that. Thats all the kit I need. If I'm shooting strictly landscapes I turn to my Linhof 617s Technorama and Fujichrome film or Ilford FP4.
I also couldn't agree more. But nonetheless I'm going to buy the Sony Alpha 7V as soon as it's available. I skipped the IV, but I just want the next one. Besides of that I'm kind of a lens collector. So as much as I agree to your statements I fear I'm guilty of having GAS.
@@snapsbyfox Full fat A7 or the equivalent in an A7C were it to appear? The compact full frame appeals to me as a form factor, especially with a walk-around lens on it.
I think it depends on the kind of places you visit or use as to lenses. As we were going places where I potentially needed more reach 70mm wouldn’t have been enough. I took a prime and as usual never used it. I can’t go out without knowing I can have more reach if I want it, it’s fear of missing out but in relation to focal length 😂
Sage advice. I’m ok with people buying whatever gear they want whenever they want to if that is what makes them happy. Not everyone considers a camera a tool and they shouldn’t be criticised for that, especially if those doing the criticising are constantly upgrading their software, computers etc in the background. Personally, I hate custom buttons/wheels and I want, and am prepared to pay for, a camera with as few of those possible. If having that means buying a camera more expensive than a camera with better technical features so be it because my value for money sweet spot lies at a different point. Most of us are just hobbyists so let’s enjoy our hobby however we wish.
Monitor calibration is relatively inexpensive and not a gimmick unless your monitor is calibrated/ color accurate from the factory (hence $$$). Even then, controlling the color gamut can be critical. I like to actually print my photos, so matching my display to a printer is important to preventing me from wasting money because I missed a green/blue/red tint/poor contrast. My prior monitor had me pulling back reds a lot, and I didn't catch it until I printed the photos and they all had ugly green tints - today's "wide gamut" monitors are not ideal for photo editing, really, so a simple calibration might save you. I also recommend getting a flash (like a godox) for $100-$200 and learning it. That more than any lens improved my photo quality, consistency, and sharpness. Not to mention, I find it fun to try manipulating lighting for all scenarios. I also invested in a $5 white card to help in setting white balance in certain challenging lighting scenarios (and to double as a big bounce card if I need one). Polarizers, NDs, good bags and straps are also not a waste (and can be used with future cameras. But 100% I agree that not chasing the latest and greatest features and camera bodies is bound to disappoint. No camera has been released in the last 6 years that, IMO, offers me anything my X-T3 doesn't already have, aside from quicker AF or somewhat better image quality. Although, admittedly, I want newer cameras, when I think about upgrading, it is usually for a used flagship from the major brands - a D850 or Canon R5 is tempting at this point, but both are downgrades in some ways. Putting the money into the best lenses you can afford is almost always a far better decision.
But, Roman, the auto open and close lens cap on Amazon is a must have accessory. Especially as the manufacturer shows it being used on a Leica on its promotional video. Plus, it would make a photographer appear more professional in the eyes of clients. It's a no brainer, like that body spray that makes you more attractive to women. Laters...
I upgrade because I can from a financial standpoint. Also it’s business expense and each new camera is an opportunity for videos, blogs, guides etc. So for me when I get a new camera, it usually can pay for itself 10 times over. Not including client work
Well, good that I own a camera between €1k and €2k, and an 18-50mm f2.8 and a 23mm f1.4, seems like I did sth right so far. I definitely want one tele lens though, love the look for landscapes, just stacking colors like layers on top of each other is a style of photography I really love, and 75mm FF equivalent doesn't really cut it for that.
I agree with all the things that you mentioned, but we, that are not professional photographers we will never be able to see the camera as "just tools". A cool device, that we use with pleasure but not of need, yes that we could do. But tools, no ... at least me 🙂
can I get some advice from people watching this and roman if possible, I have a ZV E1 for my international travels and especially if a brand or company is involved, i have a go pro hero 9 for my motovlogs, I have a dji pocket 2 for most of my vlogs since its so small, but I don't like the colors it produces and at night its just not usable, I have bought the DJI pocket 3 to replace and be the heavy lifter and replace the pocket 2, is that a good decision? or shall i cancel the order and keep the pocket 2? orrrr, shall I get the sony zv 1 m2?
Were you able to wander around Marrakech safely with your camera? Also wete you able to take those street photos without people running over demanding money?
Rome, you once elaborated on Fuji’s AF-C as your preferred focus mode for street photography. May I ask, you about your thoughts on Fuji’s AF-C performance for the XT5? Great video, I have already bought your “Little book of photography” and I definitely recommend it to other passionate photographers👏🏼📸.
for me it seems fine mate. but please remember I don't shoot things that challenge the AF system. The difference is more noticeable in lenses - anything with LM in it is noticeably snappier than the older systems
Perfect video to piggyback on your "IQ vs. QI" video. It makes me wonder about something. Now that you've been shooting your video with the Pocket III, do you think you'd be able and happy using a T3 like you once did. Does the Pocket make it easier to do photography while shooting video? Thanks for taking us along and for your thoughts! Have a great day.
Honestly since the pocket 3 and now the Action 5, I don't think I would go back to using traditional cameras at least for when I'm outside. The only exception is for cinematic video clips that I share on instagram. I'm not a video guy, having this YT channel showed me that.
@@snapsbyfox I completely understand. I've wanted to try video for a while, but was really intimidated by it and the editing process. Thanks for the response!

Hey Roman, I bought the book and its awesome ! Thank you for making it
Had a a7iv with big heavy glass.. sold it all.. had a fuji x100 bla bla bla.. sold that off too..
Thank You!
Love to hear more about photography in Morocco. Understand it’s great but hard at the same time.
just published a blog on that
@@snapsbyfox I’ll check it out.
Thank you very much, Roman
So as much as I agree to your statements I fear I'm guilty of having GAS.
tbh I think I will pick one up too as my first Sony yo try properly
@@snapsbyfox Full fat A7 or the equivalent in an A7C were it to appear? The compact full frame appeals to me as a form factor, especially with a walk-around lens on it.
My fun camera I use the most is the Fuji X30 then the next is the XT1
Good advice I wish I had and would have listened to when I started.
Most of us are just hobbyists so let’s enjoy our hobby however we wish.
perfectly timed with the Q3 43, but I get perfectly good photos with the XT5 and 33 1.4
Great video and Marrakech! .. what more could you wish for…?
The Nikon Zf is my fun camera
Excellent vlog and sound advice
Couldn't agree more. Just need some cure for my GAS :)
Fantastic advice as ever.
Laters...
A lot of reasonable statements. That said, rather than upgrading the camera, explore different lenses and filters.
Absolutely. x1000000000. Thanks for another great vid. Enjoy all the tajine and mint tea :)
When the thumbnail is better than 90% of other people's actual photos... :-)
What do you recommend for 24-70mm lense, especially for the high MP of the X-t5?
Unpopular viewpoint: I always buy the best camera so I cannot blame my camera for shooting shit photos anymore haha
hahaha same
@@snapsbyfox ...but in some way you do. Otherwise you would not see a need to upgrade time and again. 😄
I upgrade because I can from a financial standpoint. Also it’s business expense and each new camera is an opportunity for videos, blogs, guides etc.
So for me when I get a new camera, it usually can pay for itself 10 times over. Not including client work
You’ve just answered your question ……
LOL. Same. Shooting with a7rV and A7siii. It’s definitely me and not the camera
Great points. What bag were you using in the video?
Well, good that I own a camera between €1k and €2k, and an 18-50mm f2.8 and a 23mm f1.4, seems like I did sth right so far. I definitely want one tele lens though, love the look for landscapes, just stacking colors like layers on top of each other is a style of photography I really love, and 75mm FF equivalent doesn't really cut it for that.
Thank you Senpai
Even sensor dynamic range hasn't really improved that much in the last decade or so, autofocus & lens design has improved by much more as has IBIS.
I agree with all the things that you mentioned, but we, that are not professional photographers we will never be able to see the camera as "just tools". A cool device, that we use with pleasure but not of need, yes that we could do. But tools, no ... at least me 🙂
Talking sense all the way.
can I get some advice from people watching this and roman if possible, I have a ZV E1 for my international travels and especially if a brand or company is involved, i have a go pro hero 9 for my motovlogs, I have a dji pocket 2 for most of my vlogs since its so small, but I don't like the colors it produces and at night its just not usable, I have bought the DJI pocket 3 to replace and be the heavy lifter and replace the pocket 2, is that a good decision? or shall i cancel the order and keep the pocket 2? orrrr, shall I get the sony zv 1 m2?
This! So much
Perfect video to piggyback on your "IQ vs.
Btw please make a video about where to shoot in Marrakech if possible. Planning to visit next year. Any other suggestions on Morocco will also be welcome. Thanks
just published a blog on my website
@@snapsbyfox wow that’s amazing. Thank you for sharing
The woman in orange is following you :) be careful :)
She seems to be getting bored :) be careful :)
great post,100 percent agree about gear,,curious does sigma make a 24-70 for the fuji system?
yeah 18-50 2.8
@@snapsbyfox ahh yes that's a great travel lens from what ive heard, im looking to find something to pair with my 35.1.4, im looking into the 18 f2 or that 18-50?.i currently have the 23 1.4 but on the go that lens feels bulky.i agree about the fun factor and size, its over looked most want the newest gear.
Make sure you are able to change the language in the camera.
Though we all know it it was a great reminder that all you say is true… what tea did you order in the end?😊
well, earning money generally requires time and patience, too. thus, acquiring image quality takes time and patience, too.
however, it takes time and patience spent on something other than photography (unless, you are pro photographer)
1 calm tea please, prepare me into the weakend
The temptation to buy another lens is always there lol :)
i want to upgrade but i keep getting put off by the weight of the lenses with the focal length i want. my current camera i have a 100mm and its about 500g but for the sony my only option is a 105mm at 1.6kg.
Be careful out there! In several scenes you’re being stalked by a young woman in a pink t-shirt. Bahahahah 😂
Which one of the ‘two lenses’ are you using in this vid?
I think it was the 35
A lot of truth here, but what lenses are best depends on what is your photography style, genre and personal carrying ability
Hey, Roman! Those lens suggestions: are the focal lengths for APS-C or for Full Frame?
full frame i think, otherwise you wouldn‘t have anything wide angle (24-70 would be a 35-105 and i don’t even know if that exists somewhere)
yeah FF as it's the best benchmark
@@snapsbyfox So let me check if I have this right: FF 24-70mm would be covered with a Fuji XF16-55mm lens?
Yeah
@@snapsbyfox Thanks! Love your vids!
