I am a white man I'm 59years old now I first watched double Dutch on top of the pops I'm from the UK, I was always amazed at the young girls how talented they was at skipping it was superb to watch, after all these years I still go back to that video now and am in ore of there rope skills, thank you ladies for making my life happier 🙏🏼❤️
Im 43, Still ❤❤❤ the sport Double Dutch probably saved my life, kept me out of trouble and occupied, while growing up in NYC, Far Rockaway and Brooklyn
They sang one of the songs my friends and I would sing when we would do double dutch in Seattle in the 80s. Crazy how the songs travel so far. I really miss it. I can still remember how it felt to rock back and forth to find your rhythm and the right time to ǰump in.
I attend a Haitian Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Currently, after the service, I bring soccer and foot balls and the kids and I all have a blast playing. However, many of the girls don’t participate and do their own thing. I just ordered two 14’ jump ropes, and will be bringing them this weekend to show all the girls. I’m betting they’re going to absolutely love it!
I'm am from Brooklyn. I am not surprised that the Dutch created it (the name speaks for itself), and I am not surprised that it became popular in New York City first (which the Dutch founded), because Double Dutch were played everywhere all over New York growing up.
As me being a white guy, I never did see the white girls doing that. I think it's so cool and for it being part of the black culture I think it's beautiful. I believe they need to pass it down and keep it going, it's so fun to watch and it's just fun . Thank u for sharing this and thank you for educating me and expanding my outlook and views.
Best memories playing this with the girls in the neighborhood or and at school..wee need more of this , the youth would do good to know this more and less of being on cell phones yah?🙏🏼🌹🌿🖤🌿🌹🙏🏾
Tears in my eyes . .. . I was only vaguely aware of this . ... Yes this cannot be allowed to vanish . This must be encouraged . I'm ready to jump out my chair . Smiling and crying lol I'm breathing deeply
I learned this sport by watching the Disney movie "Jump In" with Corbin Bleu. Recently a double dutch video from a japanese youtuber named イワネスインセイン appeared in my recommendations. It looked so fun and it really made me want to buy a jump rope so I bought one.
ReConnecting with our American culture …. We love doing the double Dutch dance throughout our neighborhood. It was a wonderful way to release tension , irritation and frustration…. That needs to come back in celebration ❤ of making America great again ❤
I love black women and girls. Full Stop to oOoOO 💖🙏🏽💖🙏🏿💖🙏🏾💖 get double dutch in the phys ed curriculum of U.S. Public Schools - it should be right there next to square dancing- has the same amount of cultural significance ❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️
My best memories from elementary school was getting to play double dutch at recess, I was terrible at it but the other girls were so awsome and taught me how. Now I'm teaching kids to jump ^_^
Yessss!! I am so happy to have started jumping again with the team @showdemmovementfoundation Double Dutch is def making a comeback. There are so many dope teams around the US. Philly Girls Jump, Majestic Jumpers, 40+ Double Dutch CLub and so many more!!
Not sure about that part but as a 70s kid from The Netherlands we (well, not me, never had the agility) played it and it was much older than that. I can assure you being kids we had no idea that it was popular elsewhere. To us it was so normal we didn't have a specific name for it. We called it skipping rope, whether it was single jumper with one rope or double dutch style.
I watched the double Dutch music video with Malcolm McLaren and I tell you now those black girls are seriously talented for what they were doing!! Unbelievable skill and stamina shown!! I’m definitely impressed by it 👏👏👏
If you're going to tell the story of a dutch past time it should contain some info on the Dutch. 🤔 This video is a textbook example of cultural appropriation, trying to take credit for another cultures creations. What a false narrative.
oh, so this was stolen from the Dutch people (no one in the video gave credit to the Dutch people) , I think this is appropriation according to the woke ideology.
I used to double dutch with my auntie (my age) and my cousins. Seeing this video makes me thankful of those times. Makes me miss double dutch...
Let’s bring this back!!!
Let’s do it
Absolutely. And around the world. I'm in Australia

Growing up in the 70s and 80s, double dutch was a staple of NYC Black living. Great memories.

FAMILY WOULD TRAVEL VISITING RELATIVES AND THE KIDS WOULD TEACH THE SONGS AND RHYMES TO COUSINS FROM ANOTHER STATE, THAT'S HOW WE DID IT.😊

NJ too!
@@TheHappinessHelper_XO Right.
I'm from New Jersey and we played it everyday when we were little and for hours. Even the boys played with us.
I'm relatively surprised, though, being that "Double Dutch" was an alleged private/secret language/lingo/tongue used by Our slave ancestors. 🤔
All over America in the 80s

Grew up in the Bronx in the 80s jumped double dutch just about every day , won a trophy too, great memories
Me & my grandchildren are carrying on the tradition also!
Double dutch is another cultural carryover from Africa. Tufo dance in Mozambique is so similar.
They stole everything from Africa

I was always too scared to double dutch but I learned how to turn the ropes.
❤ Late 70s most of the eighties I lived in South Philly. My day wouldn't be complete without seeing the kids jumping rope, particularly, Double Dutch

"Going to the corner store asking for a cable" that part!! Where can I get a good rope though? Double Dutch was everything on my block! ❤❤❤
We used to get ours from the cable guy.
Kids these days would never be able to get one. Everything costs now. I don't ever remember paying 😂
This. Is. MAGIC.
im from the UK - London , and i know DD becuase of the malcom mcclaren song
Wow.... seeing this brings back memories of watching my sisters ,and on occasion i would jump.
I wonder where the Ebonettes are? That woman looked fit for 58
We got to keep this!
I hear the younger generation can't jump double Irish. We used clothes lines when I was growing up.
What is "double _Irish"?_ 🧐
I asked Copilot and it produced results entirely unrelated to rope-jumping.
I absolutely LOVE this!
Back when our girls played outside, exercised and laughed!
A vibe ✨️🤎
this (was and still) is sooo cool!
Positive energy!
I grew up in the eighties. Everyone knew that black girl teenagers were the best at double Dutch.
MY MAMA TOLD ME IN CHICAGO THEY WERE JUMPING DOUBLE DUTCH IN THE 1930'S I JUMPED IN THE 60'S IT'S BEEN AROUND FOR DECADES CAN YOU IMAGINE 1930'S
Great memories. I would like to teach my daughter.
Where is there a video or news paper or book that shows it was Dutch immigrants had anything to do with jumping rope?
I LOVE DOUBLE DUTCHIN
Is it only a NYC thing or a North of the Dixie line thing? No disrespect what so ever just asking bc I dont know. This is so good to me!
Girls have been jumping rope since before my grandparents day and I am 50 odd and it's been done all over the world
They're so cool
Nope.. ropes were turning in double dutch in the 60's in Philly black neighborhoods.
Yessss❤
Dutch immigrants? really? I think not.
I know-- that is really hard to believe.
I'm from NYC born and raised. It has always been a part of our culture and like Bob Marley said don't let them fool ya!🤣🤣
@@rachelheckscher9752 why? You think white people can’t jump rope?
Historically, 'Dutch' could also mean German (i.e. Deutsch). That's why the Pennsylvina Dutch are actually of German origin.
