    I had doubts, since I tried previous Bloober Team games and just bounced off them. I decently like Observer, but that's about it. I'm surprised that they managed to pull this off in a way that even some of the most passionate Bloober haters seem to give it credit.

      It's understandable about the doubts. I will say this is their absolute best game and it knocked me off my feet with how disturbing it is. I've never (shamefully) played silent hill but God almighty; this remake makes me feel ashamed to say I never made time for the series.

    Short pros and cons:
    Pros
    - really heavy and good combat
    - the sounds, just all of em from doors to rain (the gazebo in the hospital garden) stayed there for the ASMR for almost ten minutes
    - the map doesn't pause the game
    - lighting is immaculate
    - acting, mocap and writing
    -added stuff was neat
    - ammo economy was done right
    - puzzles and the memories of the past we're so much fun
    - inventory ui was good
    Cons:
    - Literally just everything in the HUD, turn everything off and the game is skyrocketing to a 9/10 survival horror
    - some stuff you need to interact with were just outta nowhere like the fridge in the hospital, would've liked if it came up somewhere to interact with it.
    Felt too gamey.
    - the enemies can teleport and some funky hit detection
    - james writing some things into the map, would've liked if I had to use my game notebook but that's just me

      I'm not sure if I liked how Eddie was portrayed, might grow to like it more but for some reason he felt less like a character.
      Not sure.
      Angela was better than the original and mostly because she felt and looked nore like a child robbed of the child in her. Makes sense if you know that she never could blossom into an adult, abused and broken.
      Maria is good, i guess, something's up with her. She is a complex character and might need a third playthrough to grasp how she works as a being.
      Mary was excellent and so was James, absolutely nothing to complain about.

    I was born in the early 90s so i grew up with Silent Hill, i chose it over Resident Evil every time. I still have the Hard Discs for the first 4 games, even having the collectors edition of Silent Hill 2.
    I only speak for myself but i think Bloober did a really good job 👍 it isnt perfect but neither is the original. They showed that they cared about the franchise which is more then what i can say for whoever did ascension and short message (Which were lackluster and nonsensical).
    I think SH "fans" need to give things more of a chance instead of going in with a distaste for anything new.
    Bloober team did good. This is a good Silent Hill game. Thats from a lifelong fan.

If this were actually a bad game at its core, it wouldn't be sitting at "Overwhelmingly Positive" on Steam and a 9.3 user score on Metacritic right this second.

    Not trying to be that guy but in regards to Stillness at 31:02 it's the same audio cue as in In Water. There's no evidence he jumped out of the car nor does it support the scene. Also in the 1.0 version you still see (albiet slightly different) the scene of the water and hear the letter. I bring this up because it's at risk of becoming the next "James is looking at the player in the opening mirror" misinformation wise. 🫶

  • @TheMightyPika
    @TheMightyPika 2 місяці тому +13

    In regards to the portayal of James, I got the impression that the vast improvement in men's mental health awareness that's become public during the time between SH2 the OG to the remake has been applied to James's character and for the better.

    Has everyone collectively forgotten that Harry had a dodge mechanic in Silent Hill 1? It’s not like there wasn’t precedent for it in this game because there wasn’t precedent for its removal in the original SH2 besides it being a janky mechanic.

  • @samf.s.7731
    @samf.s.7731 2 місяці тому +5

    With the combat, I feel like they wanted the player to get in there and get their hands dirty. They want you to have that rush, and you won't when shooting from a distance at enemies.
    Every encounter will make your heart race, and it's suitable for a game like this.
    Edit: Of course they were very successful with the setting, and atmosphere. The story too.
    So for people coming at me "sH iS nOt An AcTiOn GaMe"
    We know, but that's not what I was saying.

  • @AFoxInFlames
    @AFoxInFlames 2 місяці тому +9

    Whenever I hear a complaint about dodging I ask if they played the first SH because you could side step or jump back, it's not new, I think in most of the games you can. My only complaint is Maria/Mary's voice acting, specifically the prison cell scene, did not hit the way it should of. The OG she switched her voice back and forth, this one she didn't, she just seemed hostile and I didn't like it. Didn't care for some of Eddie's changes but Angela's changes were on point! Especially the scenes before and after the Abstract Daddy fight. I cried, I wasn't ready for the emotion she brought to it and if you've ever suffered abuse, well it hits even harder as it did for me. I give it a 8.5/10. Maybe I'm biased because how much I just love the story, it's incredible, and it was the first game I beat by myself all the way through. Good job Bloober team, thanks for not messing up how you handle mental illness and trauma, I think they got it. Goes to show you don't have to go crazy remaking, keep the story, the voice acting lines, keep it as close as you can, add extra gameplay and thats it. Part of the reason TLOU works as a TV show, they kept all the important beats. No one come for me lol, it's just my opinion, but I hope everyone enjoyed it!❤

    • @four-en-tee
      @four-en-tee Місяць тому

      The original SH2 had a quick turn button, not a dodge button. And even then, it was intentionally clunky. But more importantly: you also had the 2D control scheme if tank controls really bothered you. Personally, it did for me and I was willing to put up with fighting the camera if it meant I didnt have to manually turn my character. James basically moves like a Dark Souls character in this and its weird. Why are his i-frames so forgiving?
      What they should've done in the remake was give James more sluggish combat with longer animation wind ups and cool downs similar to games like Pathologic. That would've worked really well in this game since you'd naturally want to avoid combat altogether for the most part and save health items for bosses.
      I just wish the camera button that centers it behind James's back would snap easier behind him similar to games like Mario 64. While I prefer the dutch angles over the stereotypical playstation over-the-shoulder perspective, the camera was annoying in the original.

    This remake was incredible, and I'm a huge fan of the original. Unfortunately there's some bugs that I keep finding.. theres frosted glass that looks like james is standing in a weird void, often I'm definitely hitting an enemy melee or gunfire and I somehow miss and get hit, the radio clacking when an enemy is in a locked room that has no way of getting me. Also I got the faster than fog trophy when it took me over 30hrs to beat lol I'm not complaining, but just odd, and no trophy popped when I got the bliss ending, and just a slew of lightning issues on ps5. These I'm sure can all be ironed out eventually, but still didn't ruin my experience. The bloob cooked! Great vid!

    You're the first person I've watched talk about how even when it was just rumours, how people were talking about Bloober and how the choice of Bloober was met with vitriol. Like you, I also had my reservations because of how they've worked with themes in the past. But also, people forgot that multiple developers have come forward to say that it was because of Silent Hill 2 that they got into game dev in the first place. Like, this IP is their pedestal, and while I've heard that not everything is a 1 to 1 translation (like Maria's outfit, for example), that doesn't detract from the care and the love and the appreciation the entire studio has for this IP. And it shows. And I'm so happy they got a chance to prove their love for the IP.
    I haven't had a chance to play the remake, but I'd really like to. I never got a chance to play the original, but I've learned to love the franchise in time. While I won't be scared, per se, because I know what's coming when, and the twist won't be as impactful, because I know what it is, that won't detract to finally playing the journey. That's what I'm looking forward to, and what I've heard so far about this release is that the journey is worth it.

    Great remake. I do have more issues with it than you had but I still enjoyed it a lot. Overall it nailed the most important aspects for me which was sound design and atmosphere. I much preferred the combat in this remake too and thought many of the cut-scenes and bosses were a lot better. Negatives for me were I found areas like prison and labyrinth overstayed there welcome, I think they expanded some areas too much. Game was far too combat heavy in the later sections too. Wish James could run a bit faster as well at least when outside but this would likely mess with enemy balance to be fair. Lastly I hated all the environmental handholding with the white cloth the same way I hated the yellow tape handholding in recent resi remakes. Overall really did enjoy the game though and if another silent hill is remade I hope blooper do it.

    I had a great time playing with fidelity mode. It looks better and the framedrops are very minor. I maxed out the camera sensitivity and turned off dead zone completely. Some tweaking with the hrd settings is necessary, too, to get the perfect picture. An Oled TV with VRR is a great choice to play this.
    The recent patch allows to turn off motion blur, which eliminates those artifacts almost completely.
    So, yeah, there’s no reason for that flawed performance mode, which sacrifices too many graphics features, while not hitting 60fps for most of the time.

    The only reason i get defensive over the original is cuz i can relate to the game directly,my wife's name was maryann i had a green army jacket when we met,the car model he drives is named after me,she was ill with Violet seizures and had to be tied down at times ,she had a troubled childhood like Angela and i had the Eddie situations,after three years she ...her pain ended... basically she walked up those stairs,i couldn't save her ,been carrying that heartache for three years and the remake dropped three days before her birthday.I was hoping maybe i could finally get some closure by playing it,yeah i didn't get that cry i needed but its ok ,the game felt a bit too long in some areas and i miss the dynamic camera angles in some spots and i dont like the hand holding with the towels everywhere you can go,shit just paint it yellow why dont ya,i like keeping my own notes . Maria's line delivery on the anyway was kinda limp ,the lack of pistons moving was or the scene with pyramid head and the mannequins was kinda meh,i did get the mary ending which i did want so i guess it wasnt a total loss.

    Alright, I have played quite a bit of the game so far on the normal difficulty level. I am in the prison right now for reference. I do not find this game scary or unnerving at all.
    Having said that, I absolutely love it and would recommend it to anyone who wants to experience a game that successfully captures the era it came from. It is one of the most intense games I have ever played, and I can't get enough. The graphics are phenomenal, sound is impeccable, and the voice acting is top-notch. Even better, Bloober Team stayed absolutely true to the source material. The Silent Hill 2 Remake is white knuckle fun that doesn't hold any punches.
    Addendum- The very best way to play is to treat this game as a tactical shooter (with melee finishers). I have my handgun out 9 times out of 10 when I'm in an ambush heavy environment. I check all corners and clear a room before moving on. I never just run through and is why I have seldom been caught off guard. When I hear the radio I start hunting the enemy. I'll even turn my flashlight off to get in an optimal position for a strike. I love funneling enemies through walkways and corridors. Try playing it like this once and I guarantee you will love it!

    I don't like the melee in this game. The camera is too close and the attacks are magnetic. You can't dodge without using the dodge button, otherwise the enemy will attack and zip across the distance between you without regards to the physics of their normal movement like theyre magnetized. I think even with the clunkier movement and attacks the original had better melee combat. They did a good job on everything else I've seen so far though the boss battles having phases and big arenas is a bit game-y.

    Silent Hill 2 is a masterclass. Silent Hill 2 is the closest thing in REALITY (in planet Earth) to have a real horror by manipulating the psychological aspect of the person's mind, while in fact, there is the cult "The Order" that is not exaggerated shown entirely in the game, but they are in the shadows, well hidden. Everything in the game is a representational artform. The player will have to properly interpret all findings and experiences. I created my own opinion in Silent Hill 2 Remake, here it is:
    Silent Hill 2 Remake is an excellent masterpiece by Bloober Team, noting the fact the original Silent Hill 2 was considered a sales failure back in 2001 by Team Silent. The game is a representational artform where I believe (This is my interpretations) that James is somewhat unconscious after taking SUICIDE (my guess is just about one to three weeks after ending Mary's life, or maybe also by time loop because the deity forbids leaving the fog world). James is NOT DEAD because I found a clue in the Jukebox (during night), there was a writing somebody wrote in blood that says: "If you Really wAnt to sEE Mary, you should just DiE. But You might be hEading to A different place than MARY" (letter capitalization is observed and similar). James lost his memories after taking suicide. In addition to this, during the first save point upon entering the graveyard, he said: "Ugh! It's like someone's groping around my skull", which means that someone touching him intimately and unintentionally. I think Mary is reaching him to remember, otherwise if he dies, they will not meet (probably James will go to heaven while Mary stays in hell, as a sacrifice for the cult's deity goddess. Also, the locations where you could find the words, "There was a hole here. it's gone now", has meaning in reference to Silent Hill 4: The Room. The protagonist, Harry Townshend, can travel to at least three dimensions (reality, fog world/purgatory, and otherworld/hell), BUT can ONLY traverse the dimension through "the hole" inside the symbol probably created by Walter Sullivan (well-versed cult member and a sacrifice) or when someone is fighting for their life (dead or unconscious, like Eileen Galvin). Also, in Silent Hill 1 Movie, no one is allowed to leave the fog world in Silent Hill unless permission is given by the cult's deity. James' soul is delusional and somehow trapped to find his lost memories in Silent Hill. His soul is either to be RESURECTED (Rebirth and be released to fog world if still unconscious) or become a sacrifice to INCUBUS (Alessa), the cult of the Order's deity. In reference to original Silent Hill 2 DLC, entitled "born from a wish", and also in Silent Hill 3, where their concept coincides, "the wish" did not came from James but from Alessa, vessel of deity. In order to make James become a sacrifice to the demonic god-like entity. In SH4 and SH: Homecoming, the entity, after sacrificing 21 souls, would require another sacrifice thereafter to remain existing. And James, serves this purpose, the DLC Born from a wish, was not actually from James but by Alessa. The Pyramid-head man is actually the executioner of the cult. They help serve the deity by making sacrifices. If James is a SINNER, he deserves to die. But several instances of Pyramid-head encounters and cut-scenes suggests otherwise. James is INNOCENT. The idea of the executioner, even back from the middle-ages in Europe, wears a red (suggest it was from a cult) or brown cone-like cloth (not metal in the game) head covering face, to conceal the beheader of a convicted criminal (reference to images found on the internet and in-game content, inside Toluca Prison). The wish, where through psyche - influence people like Maria. She has facial resemblance to Mary (but not body figure and personality. Also, Maria is blonde and blue-eyes, while Mary is a brunette and hazel-eyes) to make James REGRET his action to end Mary's life. Angela is a rape victim, to imply Mary is VICTIM. Eddie is a serial killer, suggesting that James is a MURDERER. Laura is a child Mary did not have, even said, "You DIDN'T LOVE her anyway."
    In addition to this, I would say NO when they say Maria is an imagination, and it is big coincidence that she is Mary's look-alike, because during Silent Hill 2 DLC: Born from a Wish, Maria is a person who works in Heaven's Night as a Bartender. Just like Angela Orosco, who lives near Silent Hill Lumberyard, because her father, Thomas Orosco is a lumberjack. This is what I perceived about Angela Orosco. His father and mother had an argument and fight, which eventually ended her father killing his wife (or maybe her mother leaving and moved to Silent Hill). Since then, she took care of the family and while her father occasionally rapes her. Her mistake was to follow James to Silent Hill after asking him why he has to go. James said to look for someone important. Angela actually feels that her mother is still in Silent Hill after leaving them (maybe because she could not find her mother's name in the graveyard). After entering Silent Hill, Angela also became trapped inside the fog. Back to Maria, all her relations in work left because of the monster sightings. It frightens them. She is independent, liberated and brave woman. She handles a revolver from the Bar's office and can grab a Chinese knife. By then, she decided to follow the others who left. She leaves her safe place in Heaven's Night Bar. She tries to survive the horror and finds way how to escape the fog (But in reference to Silent Hill 1 Movie, the town does not permit anybody leaving if the fog is already settled). She found the Baldwin Mansion open. Inside, she helped Ernest Baldwin to find a "white liquid", or in other game called "white chrism", from Blue Creek Apartment to supposedly and miraculously bring her dead daughter back, Amy (one of the 21 sacrifices to summon the cult's deity). She found herself doubting and delusional about the idea of resurrection. After going such terror and found that she was speaking to a ghost (but I believe Ernest is speaking from the other dimension and also think Ernest is an occult member). I found a striking notion to remember with Ernest: he was surprised after Maria gave him Amy's birthday card, and said, "Oh, you must be...". I think Maria is the representation of the GOBLET, James is the White Chrism, but the Philosopher's stone (or Book of Lost souls) is still unknown. All three or four are combined, in order to revive somebody, or summon the cult of the Order's vessel for the Deity Goddess. Then he asks her to be careful about James, that he is a danger (as the cult presumes). She pursues to find him, otherwise. I believe the summoned powerful entity is preparing James, and Maria is one of the objects for this to happen.

    It's a fantastic step in the right direction, but I found the second half to get very repetitive. Once you hit the labyrinth the game is just literally the same thing over and over. that 10 extra hours they added to the game makes it feel like a slog imho

    Idk why people don’t like Bloober. Am I the only one who thought the Medium was actually pretty good? “They mishandled the material” people say. How so? Because they presented a girl’s trauma as too much for her to bear? Sorry to break it to those people but for many people, that is how it is. James tries in vain via completely hollow words to save Angela, “I don’t know what you’re planning, but there’s always another way…” There was no other way for Angela from the minute she stepped foot in Silent Hill, but we are supposed to praise TS’s handling of suicide? Cmon. It’s just bandwagon hating for bloober.

      I understand many people (me included) were skeptical of bloober ability to handle the story considering their previous work was not great, and also Konami management decisions are a mess and most often with their ips they try to squeeze the most profit possible with as little care of quality now (everybody is still mad they cancelled silent hillS /pt to focus gatcha/pachinko machines) , so the two things build up in a lot of angryness from fans which was misplaced at the devs. But im glad despite all this bloober proved to care about the material and worked closely with people from the original team, so many of hate the remake is getting is just bitter people or trolls who are unsatisfied because the women there "aren't pretty enough" or whatever nonsense they are saying these days.

    Lololol you totally made this video for people like me. I was suuuuch a hater haha. For the longest time it seems. I'd argue that even part 4 wasn't all that good and only silent hill 1-3 are the only good games in the franchise haha. The rest are mediocre or just bad...
    Happy to see that after like 20 effing years, we got another good silent hill game. Yeah it's a remake but hey lol it's a pretty sick remake!

    They changed Mary's letter = This is not the same story.
    I can take character models being redesigned I can take a new camera. I can take new maps and new combat controls.
    But THE. MOTHERFUCKING. LETTER.
    It is such a crucial and deep part of the game. Why? Just WHY?

      Probably to be more consistent with the narrative.
      For instance, in the old game, the abstract daddy becomes just a common enemy, but in the remake they realized that wouldn't make a whole lot of sense.
      But I will not pretend to know what the narrative is 😂 I got no clue.

    Played the HD collection last week on Series X, had no problem.
    The original has the better atmosphere, better characters, is more disturbing.
    Remake looks better, plays better and is longer, but lacks a lot in the 3 other points.
