Thanks for the review :) Although it's APS-C, I'm planning on getting this for the Panasonic S1 as a compact AF square-mode lens for when my adapted ART lenses are unnecessary/big.

@David Zhou no joke. If I didn't have covid I'd hunt your barbar down. On another note, if you could only have 1 prime lens for everyday use what would it be??
@@sebastiandavid8677 On full frame, for all around it would be the Sony 24mm f1.4 GM, for portraits it would be the Sony 50mm f1.2 GM. On APS-C, for an all arounder, it would probably still be the Sigma 16 f1.4, for portrait it would be the Sigma 56 f1.4!
@David Zhou Awesome. I've been curious about that 16mm and trying to move my comfort level away from 80-200mm and towards a nice, fast, compact prime. Thank you for the responses, I'll keep an eye on your content :)
Thinking to buy this to use on a full-frame camera. Equivalent would be 84mm but does it retain the 1.4 depth of field ? I believe it would give an equivalent depth of field as a 2.1 but the same amount of light as a 1.4 ... Using the centre of the lens it would be sharp edge to edge and save quite a few $$$'s.
I see where I messed up, I meant to say "2 additional stops of light", not "2x the amount of light", so yes, you're right - it would be 4x the amount of light (or two additional stops)! Thank you for the correction!
When you pixel peep and when you look at the little nuances, you'll see why the 85GM wins over lenses in similar focal lengths, but overall Sigma's construction and quality really comes through with this 56mm!
Negative, the a7C II is a full-frame camera, I’d opt for something like an 85mm f/1.4 if you want the same type of look as this lens. A good budget option that comes to mind would be the Sirui “Aurora” 85mm f/1.4 which is priced at $599
Thank you for making videos 2:1! It’s interesting to see most channels in the tech community have transitioned to this aspect ratio, but many videography/photography channels keep at 16:9...
All focal lengths are the same (that is, what it is stated on the box/lens), so a 56mm focal length is, optically, 56mm. However, because it is built for an APS-C body (the rear side that connects to the camera) only has enough coverage to fully expose an APS-C sensor. Now, due to the fact that an APS-C sensor is 1.5x smaller than a 35mm (full frame) sensor, it's effectively "cropping" the 56mm focal length to effectively an 84mm focal length. I hope that makes sense!
Found it! This video by Gerald Undone contains very good information about focal lengths and depth of field, which may help further answer your question! ua-cam.com/video/1bzHn2cKwLI/v-deo.html
I think it'd work very well for interview styled shots (or like my review monologue), however, just keep in mind you'll need about 5-10 feet between the camera and the speaker (depending on the composition you want), but if you have the space, it'd look very good for that use case!

I shoot with both the Sony 50mm f/2.8 OSS and Sony 85mm f/1.8 lenses and I am quite happy with the results. However, if the 56mm Sigma f/1.4 had been available I might have chosen that lens over both lenses that I presently use. I shoot with 2-bodies so I can switch back and forth between focal lengths easily...
As a potential new Sony a6500 owner would you recommend the sigma 16mm and the 56mm to be good start lenses? I hope to eventually get the 30 to complete the trifecta edit: I plan to shoot mainly landscape and street. Along with videos like travel ones
@@DavidZhou Thankyou very much Bought a6000 with sony 50mm f1.8 OSS cause sigma was going a little over budget , but sony 50mm f1.8 is also a good lens right?
I've currently been experimenting with the HLG3 color profile and I correct it with a technical LUT that converts HLG3 to Rec.709 - you can find a bunch of these online (few are free, many cost 5-10 dollars).
I personally didn't own the Sony 50mm f/1.8 but my other photographer colleagues who did noted that the auto-focus was very slow compared to other lenses they owned. Image quality will be marginally inferior, *however*, you can get the Sony 50mm f/1.8 used for less than $250. If you're looking to do portraits professionally, I'd recommend investing in the 56mm f/1.4 or something more telephoto *but*, if you're just dabbling with the new focal length, it definitely could be a better value proposition to go for a used Sony 50mm f/1.8. If I had to pick between the two, I'd get the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 - hope that helps!
@@lorenzoocchipinti9120 Depends on what you're shooting, the 35mm will be noticeably wider BUT if you're shooting video, that's honestly a good thing *most* of the time. Plus, OSS is a huge help when you don't have IBIS. So, if you're heavy on videos, the Sony 35mm f/1.8 OSS, if you're focused on portrait photography / need a lens that does close-up videos (think, interviews) and you can keep your camera on a tripod or gimbal a lot, then the Sigma 56mm f/1.4!
@@DavidZhou Thank you so much, yes I'm heavy on videos so I will go for the Sony 35mm f/1.8. when I will purchase the new a600, Have I to take it with the 16-50mm lens bundle? Or just the camera body? If I'll own the 35mm f/1.8 it makes sense to take the 16-50mm too? Considering with the bundle the 16-50mm would cost me only 90 euros here.
RyanJS08 I use a cheap variable ND (I know, throwing away all that sharpness by using a budget ND filter but that’s neither here nor there 😂). But, I use it on the 16mm when I’m traveling and vlogging to keep my aperture open, shutter speed down at 1/60 or 1/250 (depending on the FPS I’m shooting in) and exposure controlled! I’d recommend it if you shoot a lot outside!
I shot some with and some without it, the lens hood definitely helps control the lens flaring (so that it happened less), but does not combat the intensity of the flares when it does happen.
I think it'd be too telephoto for all general use. It'll take great portraits but your concerns are valid of needing to be far back. I'd recommend the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 instead for that use! If you do a lot of active things, I personally would find the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 even better.
I’ve heard sub par reviews of the Sony 50mm f/1.8 unfortunately, but I haven’t personally tested it so I can’t say - I can say the sharpness is tack and the AF is fast on the Sigma 56mm f/1.4!
The Sigma is sharper and has better AF than the Sony, but the Sony is no slouch. It was one of the sharpest Sony APS-C lens before the Sigmas came out. The Sony has more CA wide open, and slightly worse focusing in low light, but it has OSS and is way cheaper than the SIgma. For my copies of these two lenses, the Sony was almost a quarter the price of the Sigma.
Why is nobody comparing the full frame 85mm on APS-C vs that 56mm on APS-C ?! :( I'm using the Sony 85mm F1.8 on my A6500 and I can't figure out if I should switch to that 56mm or not. The zoom of the 85mm on aps-c is a bit annoying to work with but I'm pretty sure the bokeh is better, can't find comparisons :(
Bokeh is hard to compare at different focal lengths due to compression as the 56 f/1.4 has a wider f-stop but the 85 f/1.8 is a longer focal length which will have more compression. Both of these factors contribute to a more blown out background. The real question here is if you like the focal length of 85 on an APS-C a lot, or if you want something wider to work with. I'd really base your decision on that!
@@DavidZhou Thanks for the reply. I kind of see things differently, I want the best portrait lens for the A6500 and for a proper photo shoot (not just some stolen pictures in the street), I can work with most distances (of course I don't want to have a 400mm and be 100m away from my subject, and yes 56mm is a bit easier than 85mm, but you get my point). I already have the 85mm and I just bought the 56mm, I'll compare both and see which one I like best (and sell the other one). Quality of bokeh is the key for a portrait lens. I was just surprised to see that nobody else seems to have the same problem (based on forums and what tests youtubers are doing basically).
For this video, I used FilmConvert to color correct and then Lumetri Colors to color grade and fine tune! Other times, I may use a technical LUT (that corrects Cine/SLOG/HLG footage to Rec.709 color space) and then Lumetri Colors to color grade.
To be fair, you should have made comparison shots between the Sigma 56 and the Sony 85 GM at the same _relative_ aperture. That is with crop factor applied to the aperture also. The Sigma 56 at ƒ/1.4 is same as Sony 85 at ƒ/2.0 as regards as DOF and Bokeh. As you can't have the equivalent FF ƒ/1.4 on the Sigma (that would be ƒ/0.9 !) you'll never have the same amount of Bokeh wide open. Yet, it's certainly more than "good enough" as it is also much much cheaper.
That's where I'd attribute the difference in image "character" between the two shots at 4:52! You're right though, it's not an equivalent comparison, but rather the settings I'd shoot portraits on with either setup (if you buy an expensive f/1.4 lens, you tend to want to use it for f/1.4 as much as you can), so the difference is what I'd experience in a real shoot (because I'd open my lens as wide as I could), but for an IQ comparison, I agree I should've done another shot with the Sony 85 GM stopped down to f/2!
I did not use a ND filter if that's your question. I was originally planning to, however, I realized I had step UP rings and not step DOWN rings, fml haha
@@nikizzam Correct, I "over-cranked" it and shot at a much higher SS during outdoor shots because I didn't have a proper ND filter for the lens, however, ideally you'd want one so that the motion blur looks more natural and filmic (and not super choppy) - but I think that the footage turned out pretty nicely regardless! :)
The 1.4 isn't really a 1.4 as you need to add the crop factor to it as well. Which an F2.1 or F2 (rounded down) vs the G-master 85mm which is a true 1.4

Did you use any filter for the video test?
I did not use a ND filter if that's your question. I was originally planning to, however, I realized I had step UP rings and not step DOWN rings, fml haha
@@DavidZhou then did you increase the shutter speed to prevent overexposing your footage?
@@nikizzam Correct, I "over-cranked" it and shot at a much higher SS during outdoor shots because I didn't have a proper ND filter for the lens, however, ideally you'd want one so that the motion blur looks more natural and filmic (and not super choppy) - but I think that the footage turned out pretty nicely regardless! :)
The 1.4 isn't really a 1.4 as you need to add the crop factor to it as well. Which an F2.1 or F2 (rounded down) vs the G-master 85mm which is a true 1.4
Hey man, that intro music was dope. Can I know what track is that?
It's licensed music from Epidemic Sound, they provide really good music for content creators at an affordable price :)
I was looking for it on Apple Music.
@0:15 she is gorgeous!
what camera was used for the first shot?
The shots out on the trail jogging were shot with the a6500 + Sigma 56, the product shots were shot on the a7iii + Sony 24-70 f/2.8 GM. Hope that helps!
@@DavidZhou thanks david! this 1080p have great quality! did you sharpen in post? i usually use the 50p on my a6500 because it looks a lot better than 100p
@@asura02 The lower the frames per second / Mbps, the better the quality will be, because more data is written to each frame!
You sold me
It sells itself! Sigma really did a great job with this lens set
Did you use the lens cap?
i don't think so
Do a review of the sony 18-105mm!
