    He didn't tell the bar. What on earth will force him to tell a single mother with a child in his office that he is a child sex offender? Not only did he not tell the bar, he didn't tell his doctor, nor his neighborhood/community. And since his name is hidden away... Most people are going to be none the wiser if they step foot into his office.

    A lawyer needing a chaperone around women and children is most certainly not of good character. The mental gymnastics the tribunal had to go through to find him of good character AND yet put restrictions on him without recognizing the contradiction are astounding. Hopefully the law sociey prevails in their appeal.

    As a licensee in Ontario, I have very serious concerns about the judgment of the panel that heard this appeal. There is absolutely no doubt that this decision casts the profession into disrepute. It's not enough for the Law Society to appeal this ruling - the benchers who sat on the hearing and appeal panels need to be held to account as well.
    I would have some understanding if the panel licensed him subject to a restriction that he never be permitted to deal directly with the public, or be retained directly by any client(s). Even that would seem very, very lenient.
    I'm more than willing to allow 'second chances' but, in my view, A.A.'s second chance was when he applied to be licensed in 2012, lied on his application, and then "dishonestly withheld medical records and other information" from the investigation. That's it. That's enough. Some things, you just can't come back from.

      @feuilletoniste 2 місяці тому +2

      Yes - rehabilitation is only possible where someone truly understands the harm they have committed, takes accountability for their actions, is earnest in their efforts to cause no further harm to others, and is honest about their background even if by doing so they cause harm to themselves. That is emphatically not the case here.

Who is going to check stuff like this to make sure it won't happen? I find it strange to put this on the public and assume everyone is going to know about this lawyer and when to avoid him.
    Also being a lawyer is a profession that gives him access to sensible information that he could potentially use to blackmail people with. Based on his problematic views on women that could create some very bad situations.

      Right?! I was thinking the same thing!
      Aside from restrictions on who he can interact with, there would also have to be restrictions on what kinds of cases he could work on. At what point are we beyond making "reasonable accommodations" for someone, and into this is simply not a safe profession for that person to be in?

    As infuriating as this is, it's also sad. According to the previous hearing, both parents, AA and BB, asked for the publication ban to keep the truth from his children. His child that he abused was already an adult and didn't remember the abuse. Imagine being an adult and finding out that your father abused you in such a public way! What a horrible way to find out!!!

    First, why is this man not in jail!! He committed a crime. Obviously he is not rehabilitated and still poses a threat to society.
    He is delusional if he thinks he can make a career of being a lawyer. There is only a small fraction of people that would even consider hiring him.
    I would think that his father will stand to lose a good chunk of clientele if he is brought on as a lawyer through his father's firm.

    This sort of thing is so frustrating. Even over 3500 miles away in Glasgow (Scotland), a dental student at University of Glasgow was found guilty of repeated SA of a 6-8 year old child, and was handed an absolute discharge from the judge. No punishment, no supervision, no conviction on his record, and not being placed on the sex offenders register. The judge didn't want to harm his bright future career, blaming the SA on "curiosity". No thought was given to future potential
    access to children and anaesthesia. Hopefully there will be as much backlash over the subject of this video as there was over the paedo dentist student here in Scotland.

    I would call to question the board’s specific desires when it comes to children. Monsters tend to flock together and give something a legal standing so they don’t get into trouble when or if they get caught in the same act. Otherwise none of these decisions make any sense at all

    This is eerily similar to something I found out yesterday: a friend of mine works in an office with a lawyer on the sex offender registry list. According to the list, it was a Chris Hansen situation that happened in another state but AFTER the lawyer was admitted to the bar.
    Seriously considering sending my own anonymous letter because HOW IS HE BARRED? This guy and his firm list *family law* as a practice area! His disciplinary record is clean!
    Seriously, any US lawyers in the comments, is this even possible?

    OMG if this guy is able to keep his license, I imagine that no one will hire him, and if someone does, what burden does that firm carry for him? Will they have to disclose that he cannot be with women or children alone?
    I can understand something like, committing any other kind of crime, and working in a field of law completely different from what your crime was in, but this is beyond the pale! Also shame on his father! He should also be investigated and have his license stripped for endangering the public!

    To add to your point, as a defense attorney representing a teenager in the system sometimes it's the kid's own parents you have to protect them from too. I'm with you, this guy should NOT be a lawyer! Unless he's forced to put "can't be around minors" next to his name in the phone book, on advertising even on his office door. He'd have to walk around with that emblazoned on his suits because way too many people hear "lawyer" & would assume a kid would be safe. There's a certain level of public trust that comes with that job title, like cop, doctor, nurse, paramedic, firefighter. They are people we are supposed to trust at the worst moments of our lives. He's a threat to that.

  • @pixiegirl9

    I would suggest that everyone also make a complaint to the Toronto Star saying that this information has been missed in their report of the case, and link this video. If more people of the public are aware, then I think more pressure would be put on the courts to recognize this as a threat to the public.

    Right off the bat, the dishonesty seems like the big problem. People who lie when things get awkward are not the kind of person you want to place is awkward situations.
    The "actives" that the dishonesty is about seem like something that should be concerning, but not automaticly "fatal". It's _possibly_ no more relevant than if a person is a _recovering_ alcoholic. Give me reason to think that relapse or blackmail ins't going to be a problem and I could see it being filed as "not an issue", but the burden of proof on producing that reasons is on them.
    Down in the details of *this* specific case, the individual in question seems to come nowhere near the threshold of "giving me reason to think" the past conduct won't become a future problem.

  • @angela_eric
    @angela_eric 2 місяці тому +1

    If the guy had told the bar the truth about his past, and said, "I deeply regret my past actions and have reformed myself." I would say go for it and be a lawyer. However the fact that he has repeatedly lied about his past, I don't believe he has reformed at all and should be stopped from being a lawyer.

    Yeah, I'd love to finish the video for the algorithm, but I am no legal professional, I'm as far from Canada as you can get, and quite frankly, listening to this makes my blood boil not just because of the crimes involved, the lack of oversight, and the disregard for the public, but because this entire thing makes a mockery of the reform process, and will do nothing more than reduce people's belief that reform is even possible. This is why we can't have nice criminal justice systems.

    regardless as to rehabilitation- it's virtually impossible for him to abide by the clause of avoiding children while practicing law. On certain cases where other victims or witnesses are subpoenaed like i was recently, you may be put in a position where suddenly an attorney who thinks he's dealing with one thing gets in contact with them is now suddenly dealing with a case that involves some inappropriate conduct with a minor... and may or may not have a history of doing exactly that. exactly how do they plan on having him abide by that?
