It is a sponge. It's a freshwater sponge, _Spongilla_ sp. They're sponges, so they're animals. They're green because they form a symbiosis with algae. Whatever you do, don't tear them apart, every single piece will grow into new sponges. If you want it gone, get rid of the water too and probably the plants and hardscape. Again, every tiny microscopic piece will become a new sponge. And they produce gemmules, which are like spores, able to survive pretty much anything.
Your green goo looks a lot like early form of Spongilla lacustris, or possibly other Spongilla sp., a genus of freshwater sponges. Does it *feel* gooey like algae, or is it more rough to the touch? If you remove it from the tank and allow it to dry, does it feel like rough glass glued together?
Spongilla is certainly possible. It has a particularly awful odor so it should be pretty easy to confirm. Turning up the heat should also work as a control measure since it requires a pretty high disolved oxygen content.
When I first setup my 20L w plants, those died, then I got more n well as of today the only thing alive is 1 leaf of annubius!😅 alot of things happen in 2mths! But when I had to move I disassembled everything n saw this goopy green slime in my HOB still dunno if it was beneficial or not or just idk 🤷♀️ aliens? 😂 but I am so allergic to chlorine/bleach! Haven't been in a chlorine pool in 20yrs cuz I was having breathing problems n rashes on arms legs chest smh, if only the medic my dad took me to 34yrs ago knew it was an allergic reaction, I probably wouldn't have kept going into the base's outdoor pool!😅 those following yrs I put 2 n 2 together cuz I used to clean plastic cutting boards w bleach at work! Anywho, of I use bleach on whites, I use small amts n I wash clothes a 2nd time without it. N yes, my closet is full of dark clothes! 😂 I'm hoping I won't have to use bleach on everything 😮 sorry for rambling 😅

I would like to make an odd suggestion. 30 years ago my girlfriend and I made a community tank with iridescent fish only ( mostly Tetras ) the thing that made it unique was the across the the room spotlight ( angled, difficult ) that reflected the iridescence on the fish. Even Black Neon's have a really awesome look with a spotlight. We also used regular lighting ( warm florescent's back in the day ) It was a 55g with black background and brown only smallish pea gravel. I would use a 70g today. Creating the light angle without glare and reflection is the hardest part, but with patience is obtainable. Today there's so many more fish that could be inside an iridescent only tank like Laser Cory's that we didn't have back then. Ours wasn't a dark water tank but that can help with the effect. If anyone could pull it off, you could. I suggest several school's of about 25 fish, all iridescent.
wasn't it only like a yr ago you finally finished this room? what was the trigger to down sizing? I've always fought the urge (and yall know how hard it is!) to have many tanks and the most I've ever had at one time has been two! It is not easy! 49 yrs in the hobby.

I'm in Western NC. Last year I had the same (or a very similar) weird green goo in a 10 gallon tank (fortunately it never got into the larger tanks). It was almost like a sponge. I've had tanks for more than 50 years and never had that goo before nor could I find any pictures of it online. I could scrape it off leaves with my fingernail and it came off broadleaves in one piece in the exact shape of the leaves. It didn't hold much form on more narrowleaved plants (like bolbitus) when removing it. It didn't seem to do harm other than blocking light from the leaves. The spongey goo was kind of cool but it was slowly spreading and taking over the tank. I never identified a source or addition to the tank to figure out where it came from; it was an established tank with no addition in the months prior to the goo appearing. I gave it about 6 months before trying to deal with it because I wanted to see what it was. I did a tank reset but decided to try to save the plants. I didn't disinfect anything but washed all the hardscape and did a 90% water change (didn't mess with the substrate). I hand rinsed each plant and hit each one individually with the kitchen sink sprayer (I have well water). If a leaf looked poorly I either cut the plant back or cut off the leaf. Reset everything and gave it a week before adding some additional fish and neocaridina shrimp. Goo is gone and has never returned. Shrimp are thriving. Fish are happy. Plants look great. I can't say I know what part of the cleaning or adding shrimp did the trick.
4:17 this is great. i hope you capture some of the changing over, breaking down, moving fish, and re-setup. i find it interesting to see the process of transforming what you have to something different. partly because i know i can get stuck on "but i like it..." vs maybe something more manageable or less tanks, etc etc. takes some of the OOF off of it and lets you see someone approach it. love that you're doing an update like this. the planning, the reasons, the solutions, the problem solving. it's all really interesting. and it's like... streamlining stuff to work better for your use and your life. and that process i think is just helpful for people in general. also, thought you were gonna say lil puffers in the snail tank lol. :D i'd love for you to do more puffer coverage, vids, or even porcupine fish. i realized yesterday that the thing i saw in a store as a kid that i was so stoked by and how smart the lil' guy was and how personable (actually wasn't too small. bigger than a softball) WASN'T actually a puffer! it was a porcupine fish. cute as hell, those guys.
It's wild how as soon as you have one thing set up, it's time to tear it down and go another direction 😂 but it does make sense and maybe this time it'll last a while.
I've been following u for 6 plus yrs now. I don't think I've seen someone say they are going to down size to enjoy the hobby as much as u. I had a fishroom of 32 tanks and most people want more tanks to keep a variety of fish. Only reason to down size is either money, health or time.. I think Cory doesn't know what he wants to do and why he's always changing his mind. I will say a yr from now he will add more tanks and change his mind again😊
I dunno, I've got a fish room myself, and am in the process of downsizing myself, going from lots of small tanks to a couple larger combined ones. I just didn't have time to keep up with the work over lots of tanks.
@@Wintersdark actually i'm sort of in that spot myself.... i wanted to keep more fish but all the separate little tanks is driving me nuts. would be much easier to do water testing on LESS tanks, for instance. and then the water params won't fluctuate as much either. lots of the fish i keep would probably be fine together. (not including bettas). i'm setting up my 1st 40 gal. all i have currently is 10, 5, 2.5/3. (small tanks fine for shrimp, and you can kind of ignore them. that's sort of the plan.)

I saved some trouble by having all my small tanks supplied by a sump, so just one central location to test parameters and do water changes, but even then it's still a bunch of tanks to fiddle with, each with its own problems, and I only have one set of eyes. I was Visiting each tank daily, but I prefer to sit and watch one tank for longer. The maintenance time just gets out of hand.
When your hobby becomes stressful or you find yourself avoiding the work to maintain your hobby, it’s not fun anymore. .. you don’t have to be dying or poor to decide to downsize 😅. For Corey, it’s his job and his hobby, so having a smaller setup at home is probably much more enjoyable and relaxing 😅
Maybe try some dangler/dangling blackout curtains around the skylights. something else is, maybe you need to quarantine the fish when moving from those tanks to make sure they don't poop out the green stuff into the new aquarium.
I have a tank next to both of my desks and I absolutely love it, especially my basement work space where there's no window to look out. The tank makes working so much more enjoyable! Are all the tanks in here for personal enjoyment or showcase, both...?

I was running a 55, 75 and 29 and had a horrible blackbeard problem wit the 29 that kept coming back. Finally just shut the tank down. Moved all the fish to the community 55. Has made my maintenance days much easier

It's funny you say about the trumpet snails surviving the bleach. I shut down my tanks for about a year with no water just the sand left. I refilled one of them and noticed after a couple of days some of the trumpet snails had somehow survived. I had no idea they could live through so much.
i know you have said you don't like big fish, but it might be time you get back to it cory. I'd put about 5 viejas on the 800, along with a bunch of red hook myleus. That'd be amazing.
Your fish room is bigger than my entire home. I have room for a 75 gallon and a 14 gallon aquarium. No more. I would gladly get rid of the tv and stand and put a couple tanks in that space but for some reason hubby doesn’t see it my way.
Maybe try window tint for the sky lights? They have lower % for cars so maybe a not so dark tint on ur glass could cut down alge and still give u summer light. Fall/winter you could peal the tint off if u wanted the light
If I may suggest, The 800 on the 70%wall but slide down yo the corner and come out of the corner with other narrower tanks ... More better. Fung swhay. Lol

So you probably already know this . For background for a tank spray it black on the outside rear. Then what I like to do is stand flat Shell Rock upwards in the backside of the tank. It gives a texture and you're able to move it if you need to. Bonus it is flat sided and has a different color pop.
Hey Cory, just wondering if you consider yourself a person who makes large decisions kinda on a whim? I dont mean this as a dig, because i am this type of person. It just seems like you just did all of this work toset up the fish room and now you are undoing it all. Is this something you struggle with as i do?

Would you install a 3D aquarium background with a brand new tank ? Do you have regrets with the 3D aquarium backgrounds ? I hear 3D aquarium background is hard to install and very hard to remove and they are harder to clean than glass background. Please do a video on 3D aquarium background the pros and cons.
Just a suggestion: I would suggest you setup three long term tanks using different technologies- based on the most popular UA-camrs out there. I'm thinking the deep substrate guy, the plenum guy, the dirted tank guy - maybe with guppies (different varieties) in each! .

I love Easy Green, unfortunately I go through the bottle so slowly (I have just one tank, and it isn't big) that the pump has just totally gunked up and doesn't work anymore. I'd love it with a dosing pipette instead of the pump it seems that would hold up better.
No worries, this has happened to me before too and the fix is easy! You can run the pump head under warm water until the blockage of fertilizer salt melts away. To prevent this buildup from happening, each time I use Easy Green is to wipe the pump head or dip it into the tank water afterwards. Hope that helps! ~Irene
Why not let a musk turtle into the tank full of snails and let him enjoy himself for an hour or so, then rotate a different musk turtle in? They'll eat snails non-stop!
I’m a Central American cichlid guy so no plants for the majority of my fish room but that green stuff looks like someone sprayed silly string all over the plants.

We forget how powerful the sun is with all our artificial lighting don’t we? I have a ten gallon next to a window , NOT in front of it. It only gets morning sun but that’s enough . I’ve torn the tank down twice to get rid of the algae , but it just comes back . So, now I’m going to have to move furniture to get it away from the window . Argh!! As for your tinkering habits …I think your product development is going to be a big part of your legacy to this hobby . Obviously, you’ve influenced a lot of people to get into the hobby having success etc . But, the improvements you’ve made to products will live on .

*what do you think about the gradient lighted backgrounds versus the backgrounds inserted in the tank collecting algae - a time saver?*

You might consider RR for that green sponge.
Mold growth *might* be linked to high phosphate levels according to some. Otherwise it relates back to generally fouled items and cross contamination.

We have not discontinued Easy Carbon, however we are currently in the process of filing some required paperwork for this product. Until the paperwork is completed and accepted, we are not selling it on the website. This is not a permanent change, however we do not have an ETA for when it will return at this time. ~Candi

I hear 3D aquarium background is hard to install and very hard to remove and they are harder to clean than glass background.

Just a suggestion: I would suggest you setup three long term tanks using different technologies- based on the most popular UA-camrs out there. I'm thinking the deep substrate guy, the plenum guy, the dirted tank guy - maybe with guppies (different varieties) in each! .

I love Easy Green, unfortunately I go through the bottle so slowly (I have just one tank, and it isn't big) that the pump has just totally gunked up and doesn't work anymore. I'd love it with a dosing pipette instead of the pump it seems that would hold up better.
No worries, this has happened to me before too and the fix is easy! You can run the pump head under warm water until the blockage of fertilizer salt melts away. To prevent this buildup from happening, each time I use Easy Green is to wipe the pump head or dip it into the tank water afterwards. Hope that helps! ~Irene

Why not let a musk turtle into the tank full of snails and let him enjoy himself for an hour or so, then rotate a different musk turtle in? They'll eat snails non-stop!

Officially, the shelf life of Easy Green is 2 years. Unofficially, as long as Easy Green is stored as directed, out of direct light, the shelf life is years. ~Candi
We forget how powerful the sun is with all our artificial lighting don’t we? I have a ten gallon next to a window , NOT in front of it. It only gets morning sun but that’s enough . I’ve torn the tank down twice to get rid of the algae , but it just comes back . So, now I’m going to have to move furniture to get it away from the window . Argh!!
As for your tinkering habits …I think your product development is going to be a big part of your legacy to this hobby . Obviously, you’ve influenced a lot of people to get into the hobby having success etc . But, the improvements you’ve made to products will live on .
