I remember Rick in the late 70's early 80's. He was ahead of his class because of the amount of sheer work and focus. While others stayed in motels and fellowshipped, Rick slept in a pup tent and made 2000 casts a day. Literally out worked everyone. As a former computer programmer, he was able to apply analytical focus to every aspect of his prey and the habitat. The fact that he is evolving instead of fading is a testament to his ability and how he is wired. Truly, in my opinion, the best bass fisherman ever, not even close.

Love your videos. I want to thank you I won my first ever kayak tournament by following your teachings. I stayed in a 200 yard square off shore area that had shell beds and man made cover. I stayed almost all day when everyone else was fishing docks or weed lines. I ended the day with 2 of the 3 largest fish, all caught off shore and got to bring home a new kayak for my troubles. So again thank you.

Clunn was my "pattern fishing" guru in the late 70s. I remember dissecting maps - pre Google Earth - to pick out spots to fish based on seasonal bass patterns. Now I can add nutrient rich areas to that pattern.

What I love most about this watching you pick up and learn things from a legend, but also the fact he points out he’s learning things from you. Bass fishing is puzzle that’s never finished, sometimes it seems like the more pieces you add the more complicated it gets. But there’s no better feeling than those special days when it all comes together

I was lucky enough to draw Rick in a BASS open on the Arkansas River out of Muskogee OK. What a fun day, and I actually caught some keepers behind him. Rick is absolutely right. My buddy and I fish pike, muskie, and bass in small, deep, lakes near us. We consistently catch fish by running around looking for schools of bluegills, sunfish, or perch then we cast on the outskirts of the schools with plugs and spinnerbaits. We consistently catch fish with this pattern.

Just watched this whole video. Lots of good info. Trying to figure why my home lake is so tough and he hit the nail on the head at the 20:45 mark. "What if the whole lakes got shad?". That's definitely the case at my home lake. Set the boat down off plane, there's some fish, there's a bait ball. Close you eyes, run a 1/4 in any direction, if you don't beach the boat when you set it down off plane again it's, there's a fish, there's a bait ball.

One day I was fishing up river at falcon lake. I showed up at around 8am and stayed in this area about 5 hours. These two guys pull up around noon and about an hour later we start catching fish. They were old timers. No fancy fish finder,no power pole, or hydrowave. They just know the lake. Once they left I fished about 30 more minutes and left. That being said I’ve heard of pro fishermen paying people like the guys met for information and having other people fishing a lake week before a tournament.

Get into a kayak and it will teach more about breaking down a smaller area cause you can’t pick up and run across the lake to another spot. You have work with what you find and make the best of it. I mean you can cover water but you are limited in distance and very often by the wind.

I'm poor like a lot of folks who can't afford a boat and don't have any electronics.
I just fish the bank and just go at it.
I've noticed that when I go against what everyone else is doing and casting where people normally would not cast I catch big ones.
This is how I've broken my pb several times. The bigger bass are gonna be big chillin around or in some type of structure. They are very lazy and so finesse Is best used in this situation, a slower and more subtle approach is key especially if the place you're fishing is pressured.

Big key factors fish slower when hunting big fish. Big fish dont exert alot of energy finding food. You hook one hang on! Shell fight you awhile 😊 if i only have say 3 to 4 hours to fish ill spend a total of 20 to 25 minutes locating birds. You find seagulls and ducks you find bait fish you find bait fish you find fish. Bigger fish will pluck off injured bait from birds. If you find where bigger fish are an you have 1 hr window. Spend 5 minutes on big fish area. Then go to area close by with 2 to 3 lb fish. Go back and forth in that hour. Be sure 2 to 3 lb fish is close to big fish. If not spend 5 minutes max. Then get to area safely and fast to big fish. 5 minutes. Yes, set a timer for 5 minutes then move to next area.

I know what rick is saying. I saw a trophy jump in the water as i worked in an area. The big bass had jumped for a fly. 😮 I threw my fly in the area, and nope. 😢 no, Joke, this fish was at least 6 to 7 lbs 😮 I tried in the general area and could not land big mama. 3 huge fish i saw i couldn't land are going to haunt me. A big smallie and striper, then a big largemouth bass super dark. This told me this fish is in either grass or thick brush with pockets out deep. I will eventually land her. I know where this heavy grass is. I have a bigger rod to reach her. 😊

The only way this conversation will be better is if you both were actually out on new body of water fishing talking while idling between spots

Well I fish central florida. Most of the lakes around me are giant bowls. There aren't alot of creeks. Then what?😊

Fish are like people, Prime feeding is what drives everyone ( rich ) ( big fish ) to stay in certain areas.

Couldn’t enjoy the video. Way too many commercials, but I’m sure it was good. Thanks anyway.

That young man needs to study Buck Perry's basics and listen more than talk.
