- Jalsaghar is another cinematic masterpiece by Satyajit Ray. Released in 1958, this film is a profound exploration of decadence of the feudal era in the mid-20th century
Set in rural Bengal, it tells the story of Biswambhar Roy, a wealthy landlord and zamindar who is deeply attached to his ancestral heritage and a passion for performing arts. Despite his declining fortunes, he refuses to let go of his extravagant lifestyle and continues to host elaborate music concerts, even as his family and estate face financial ruin.
The Criterion Collection, a prestigious and influential film distribution company dedicated to restoring and preserving films, played a crucial role in restoring this classic. They collaborated with the Academy Film Archive and the Satyajit Ray Preservation Project to create a restored version of many of Ray's work. This initiative not only paid tribute to the legacy of a great filmmaker but also ensured that future generations could experience the timeless brilliance of Ray's work.

I learnt from this movie that “Never take anything for granted”. If we take something for granted, it means that we fail to appreciate its value or we take it as true, without questioning or testing it.
I am totally in Love with Ray's movies. Every aspect of this movies was beautiful ,the music, the dance, the acting, the plot. The dance sequence was such a beautiful scene in itself, made me so mesmerised.
I really cannot comprehend how Ray manages to do this with such a mastery.

ছবি বিশ্বাস, গঙ্গাপদ বসু, তুলসী লাহিড়ী, কালি শঙ্কর এরা সবাই নাট্যমঞ্চের অভিনেতা। গঙ্গাপদ বসু শিক্ষিত মানুষ ছিলেন। সে ভিলেন আর কমেডিয়ান এর ভূমিকায় অনেক ছবিতে অভিনয় করেছেন। ছবিবাবুকে তো সবাই চেনে। কোথায় যেন পড়েছি, ছবি বিশ্বাস অনেক সময় পরিচালকের কথামত অভিনয় কররে না(সত্যজিতের কথায়)। একটু গোয়ার টাইপের মানুষ ছিলেন, অনেক সময় তার মন মতো না হলে অনেক সময় নাকি সেটেই আসতেন না.
