      Nico Nico hey man making blues in E interesting is like the most fun part about blues in E and is why you always gotta call out blues in E at least once

      Thought the same thing. Riffs in Racy are directly out of the freeform jam in Moonchild. Heavy Fripp influence. Must be why I love this so much

    Hey I take back my last comment about no soul with this vid, I really was just judging the first tune I heard here. It actually kind of grew on me after that first tune. These guys should be commended for being artists (and supported!) in an era where the guitar is not appreciated by the average person

    Awesome... These gents are the real deal, the echoing spirit of the duets of Coryell / Catherine, also Towner / Abercrombie some equally & stunningly awesome guitar duos.

    Great performance indeed. And surprising, what fierce reactions music can provoke when it is just a little bit beyond everyone's expectations (it is by no means atonal, nor is it free jazz)

    As others have noted - a big Fripp/Crimson influence here - and this is a great place to find such influence manifesting itself, rather than in some wannabe prog-rock nostalgia. I'm also reminded of the Towner & Abercrombie collaborations. But this music no mere footnote to either of the two. There's a lot more spontaneous playing around, more humor, and (for all their talent) a little less pretense!

    I thought there were some great ideas and structures here. They actually explain how some of it works!!!
    Still, some items in the comment section are brutal!!! guess you better keep up your butter note quota and keep your playing under the posted creativity limit. Apparently there is a musical religious right that wants shake the old american songbook at you while condemning anything they don't get as sexual misconduct. Wonder if Charlie Parker got the same treatment in his day? Perhaps squares of the future will be condemning things that don't sound like this

    Really not into hating on anybody's music, especially stuff as fresh and creative as this. But being a big admirer of Julian's playing I feel like Nels is really sloppy melodically and rhythmically and makes julian sound really lousy with the messy accompaniment. Jazz in the modern age has to be about defying boundaries and expectations but a lot of this just comes of as sloppy harmonically to my ear. If I want to listen to free or avant garde jazz I'll listen to ornette coleman, cecil taylor or sun ra these guys should stick to what they do best because they're both fantastic artists but this is weak.

    • @crieverytim
      @crieverytim 9 років тому

      LPjhall 128 so is it fresh and creative or weak? actually - who cares what you think! people come here to watch a julian lage and nels cline video not read your old uninteresting opinions . but tell us more about what jazz in the modern age has to be, hater.

      Totally fair, actually just saw him this week with the scott amendola band and he was killer! I guess I'm stuck just always thinking of his playing with wilco which is more prog / Indie Rock than avant-garde

    • @jackcross1580
      @jackcross1580 8 років тому

      +LPjhall 128 volume has a lot to do with it, they wouldnt have turned their amps up too loud in a radio studio compared to a gig. louder amps have more dynamic response and therefore the playing is more expressive

    This has no soul or spirit and is probably why the average person can't relate! They are both great players though! Especially Julian. I'm a guitarist and can appreciate the musicianship of these guys but I just wish some of these guys could put what they do in a more accessible context

    • @ibefullofme
      @ibefullofme 7 років тому +1
