1st album I ever bought after hearing them on John Peel...this session is a simply amazing, aural feast from the top drawer...gonna play it again then put on some Cardiacs...
This is a priceless upload. Ive ordered the 6 disc cd ' sound on sound / red noise recordings' from cherry red records and hope this may feature. My particular favourites from the red noise era. 'revolt into style' and, 'acquitted by mirrors'. then 'brave new world'.
I bought this LP when it was released because I liked the album cover art. Boy, was I smart. I had heard of Be Bop Deluxe, but had no idea that it was Bill Nelson. What a FIND! Oh yeah, I also bought the 6-CD set.
I didn't buy when it came out cos I didn't like the album cover. I really missed out at the time. The old adage 'don't judge a book by it's cover' really is true, even for records.
Genius, though why he put 2 of his greatest songs wonder toys that last forever and acquitted by mirrors on the B side of furniture music and not on the album is a mystery
Palo Alto 1981 Best Red Noise live show ever. 8:00pm show...Bill stepped on-stage at midnight, supported by The Two Worst Bands on the Face of the Earth (Quiet Room and Save the Whales.) Despite the horror of the opening acts, Furniture Music alone was worth the wait. I still have the cassette tape I made three years later of Bill Nelson live in Beverly Hills(14th row, recorded on an Aiwa)
Saw the show at The Stone (in SF) - either the night before or after - don't remember the opening acts. Amazing show. They delayed the start of the show because he got shocked when he touched the mic and his guitar. A tape of the Palo Alto show surfaced at some point, I don't know if anybody has posted it on YT tho'.
@@tommccarthy3052 The opening act that night at The Stone was called Chrome Dinette, a local band from San Francisco, and they were vastly superior to the two bands that opened for Bill Nelson in Palo Alto. Google "Chrome Dinette" and you can actually hear a full show from that same club in Palo Alto the year before.
@@tommccarthy3052 You have a copy of Bill Nelson in Palo Alto? Wow! I'd love to hear it! We had to leave early that night before the show actually ended because my wife was working for PG&E across the bay in Fremont and her shift started in 4 hours. Maybe you could post on UA-cam...nudge nudge, wink wink!
@@richvince1627 Yeah I do. A friend of mine had it on CD (who knows what the source was) so I ripped it - two CDs a little over 2 hours) I could post it or, in the meantime, we could do a Google Drive or Dropbox thing or I could just rip the CDs and mail 'em to you. I assume you are still in the Bay Area. I would like to hear the Beverly Hills show presuming you still have it. My email address is on my ABOUT tab under Details. If says "For Business Inquires". Send me an em and will go from there.
Does anyone, anywhere, have the video of Red Noise on the Old Grey Whistle Stop from the same time period. Give my right nut to have access to that show.
John Leckie produced the first two XTC LPs as well as the last Be Bop Deluxe LP "Drastic Plastic" (same year as XTC's debut "White Noise") and the Red Noise LP. Leckie kept working with Nelson and produced some XTC members solo projects.
@@butuh1324 A recording made at the BBC's studio for broadcast on the show. Lots of bands did this and the quality was generally very high, so it's worth checking whether your favourites were invited.
ipancakes what was the source vinyl, CD?) that you have uploaded to the tube? The reason I ask is that these songs appear much cleaner and dynamic than my vinyl copy. Can you please share the version, number, release date of (I presume) the CD?
From memory : BBC RADIO SESSIONS RECORDED AT BBC MAIDA VALE ... aired on the Tommy Vance show (BBC) ... Tommy Vance saying on the sessions. “ Mr Nelson & his smiling bunch of lads are on tour “ ..... Then went on to give the U.K tour dates & venues... Red Noise did 1 U.K tour .....
As I recall for this show the bands actually recorded the tracks in a studio - multitrack - and then they played them on the show. Be Bop Deluxe did multiple sessions like this. So they have the studio polish but are different than what was on the LP.
I was in a band in the early ‘80’s who did a few radio sessions for the BBC. We did one in Pebble Mill TV studios in Birmingham and one in an old cinema in Manchester which they then broadcast. That’s how they did it in those days.
Great version of Out of touch.

I actually saw Red Noise at The Keystones Berkeley and Palo Alto on their American Tour. They were, he was, of course Amazing....

Very special and a great quality upload from ipancakes. Well done and thanks son!!
Timeless.
When I’m feeling sad - I cue this up.
As good as it gets. Thanks for posting.
Furniture music kicks real ass - god it's powerful
This is SO fucking good! Thanks for sharing…
What a great band.
WTF!? Why have I not heard this brilliance before?

Sounds a lot like XTC
They both have a connection...guest drummer....Dave Mattacks !

So….this isn’t live…but it’s not the album either…so….what is it?
But a lot better...

I can't tell, are these early versions of what was eventually released on record, or is this a live show?
