Just released an updated 2021 tutorial! Be sure to check it out, I show how to fix some common errors too! ua-cam.com/video/04ZNAKmm0dI/v-deo.html
I ran into the issue where I would reach 100% of the initial installation and then the instance would crash. I would then get this huge crash report. Decided to share because through multiple threads and dead ends I found a user with a solution.
Solution: Disable audio in the settings before running the instance. This fixed my problem and no longer crashed when going through the installation.
thank you so much, I have tried everything and this was the only way!
Thank you SO much for posting this! I've been getting so frustrated, and never would've thought of that!
thank you a lot, had the same issue
Life saver!
Legend. Thank you
Man, This tutorial was incredible. good pace, and easy to follow. Thanks !
THIS IS THE ONE I AM LOOKING FOR !!! THANKS A LOT! REALLY DETAILED AND HELPFUL!!!
pretty much what I was looking for, I was interested in the screen resize part, thank you so much Benjamin.
A colleague sent me here and I found this awesome and simple to follow... Thank you!
Thank you so much for making my life easier!!! Very detailed and guided. Feel so relieved now after installing ubuntu :)
Thank you, this video really helped me out a lot. My terminal on my mac is all mess up, so I decided to learn how to do development on Linux and start fresh with ubuntu.
This video helped me a ton! So clear and easy to follow :) Thank you so much!!
Thanks man...easily installed with ur steps...itz simple and u have shown it in detail. Really appreciate your work.
Defo, one of the best tutorials I ever had. Thanks Benjamin!
Very well explained at a great pace. Thanks so much for this!
nice tutorial!) guys, if u have an error when adding the disk image 13:21, go to Settings -> Storage and add ur install .iso as IDE Primary Device 0 (remove the empty one there if necessary
), after that start your virtual machine -> it should boot into installation
Thank you so much, Ben! Very clear and concise sets of instruction.
Thanks a lot Mr.Benjamin! This video is very much helpful with every necessary setting explained!
Thanks for the guide video, helped me follow through entire installation process.
Cheers!!
good stuff. worked like a charm. Thank you. Your video was the easiest to understand and complete. I am going to recommend this video.
Thank you so much for this video, it's exactly what I was looking for!
Thank you so much for this video, I was able to install the virtual machine and Ubuntu 22.04. The video was very helpful. Am new to tech, studying google Cybersecurity certification.
Appreciate this video. My first ever VM that I've created. Just starting out in the IT world and I'm trying to learn different aspects to help me grow. Thanks for making this simple and easy to follow. I'm having issues with the auto-resizing, doesn't change itself automatically for me or allow full screen. But hey ho, problems are made to be solved! Thanks again!
I believe now there’s some terminal commands you need to use. Take a look at this: askubuntu.com/questions/22743/how-do-i-install-guest-additions-in-a-virtualbox-vm Put the dkms command first and then the install guest additions one. Should fix the resizing. I have an updated Ubuntu video coming out tomorrow showing this.
MY MAN!!!! TAHNK YOU! 1M TIMES. I tried to instal linux in my mid 2012 mac book pro. Struggling all nigth, failed. Tried use virtual box 7, and ubuntu 22. Then i searched and found this video, Awesoome. I downloaded virtual box 6, ubuntu 20, follow this instruction and, Success. this happened on 03-01-24. Again, Thank you man!
Thanks again for the video. It helped me with the installation. The screensaver in the background is cool, you should get the McLaren MP4-12C.
Yea I have a 12C background at one point, but I found this 570s background with much better quality.
Appreciate the video very helpful! Earned my like man Thanks =)
Thank you for making a both a video for this and how to fix error messages!😁
I respect you for making this video because it helps alot to beginners like me.
Excellent! Clear and straightforward.
Thanks from Germany, very good and detailed video !!
This was extremely helpful. Thanx, a LOT!
Thanks Dude! One thing to watch out for Ubuntu 20.04 is to disable the Audio settings in VirtualBox as it would not start without it.
Now I am good to go to work on my operating system class assignments and projects. Thanks lot!!
I followed as is and it works like a charm thanks , moving to get my docker inside the vbox now
man thx a lot, i finally installed ubuntu. It's took me so many times! tysm
The best explanation I’ve ever seen.
I had some of the same install problems on my Mac. I finally found a workaround in the forums by using an earlier version of VB from last year.
In case the screen resizing is not working for anyone, open a terminal and run the following command:
sudo apt install virtualbox-guest-dkms
and then restart
Thank you! This worked - whew
Thank you!
THANK YOU
Very Useful tidbit, Thank you!
i didnt expect it to work wow thank you so much bro
on 13:10, when I clicked Add, the VM session was aborted, and I don't know how and why. It won't let me select the ISO.
That’s a common error now. I have a video showing how to fix it “NS error failure” you can also check out my latest Ubuntu tutorial. I show how to fix it in there too.
Thank you very much for sharing - great tutorial!
Just what I needed, thanks a lot!!
I spent 4 hours crying bc i couldn't do the HW. Thanks man!
Very clean, helpful. Thank you very much
Hello you are a GODSEND thank you so much for the detailed walk through

Thank you!! This helped so much!!
very helpul video and hats off man!🤗
Thank you VERY VERY MUCH!! I did it! Thanks to YOU!))
For those having some issues with UI lag, this *may* help...
Virtual Box supports up to 256 MB of video RAM. This can not be set using the slider of the Virtual Box Manager.
To make full use of all supported memory we can issue the following command in a terminal:
VBoxManage modifyvm "Name of VM" --vram 256
Before we change settings such as the video RAM a pre-existing virtual machine has to be shut down.
Note that for 3D video hardware acceleration from the guest addition's video driver the physical RAM of the host graphics card will be passed through. The video RAM settings of the virtual machine will not affect this.
Clear and to the point. Thanks!
If you experience 'Unexpected crash' then try disabling audio in vm settings - worked for me
Thank you very much, this helped.
thank you
super!
thank you very much
Thank you everything went smoothly.
Great video man ! Thanks a lot
Thanks alot man helped for my Sys Admin server building final
thank you so much ,it was very helpful
Hard drive space (VDI) can be increased on dynamically allocated drives using the VirtualBox Tools (Media Manager). The space can't be decreased, however.
Thank you soooo much , you're a lifesaver
I found I have to set the audio driver to "NULL Audio Driver" for ubuntu 20.04 to install, otherwise the installation will abort within 1 minutes. Seems MacOS permission issue, but I didn't dig deeper to see why.
For some reason even after making the guest addition, the screen resolution remained the same. Ended up doing sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-dkms(on Ubuntu terminal). This did it for me. Hope it helps someone
thank youuuu
OMG, you saved my life! I tried many different ways, none of them worked!
This comment is what I needed! Thanks so much. Just a follow-up... Although I can now use full-screen mode, the resolution is fairly low. Is that just the way it is or can that be improved?
@@juseniah Yeah that happened with me too. Try going to Displays in settings. It helped when I enabled fractional scaling and set the scale to my liking(in my case I think it was 150 or 125%). Play around with resolution too if you like. Hope this helps.
@@saylee1207 That did it! Thanks again!
Helped a lot! Thanks
thank you sooo much .it was really helpful
this is splendid! Now once this installation is done, is it the case that you have basically a dual-boot mac? What I will be wanting, ultimately, is a mac that has been fully taken over by Ubuntu, with no mac crumbs left hiding in the corners, somewhere. Is it possible to do a full installation on the target mac, with virtualbox? I know there are methods for doing this with a startup usb stick, but the mac does not seem to want to startup from a usb stick (os 10.15.x on a 2015 vintage mac air.)
Easy and efficient ! thanks a lot
this is a life saver thank you
thank you Ben i am a comp sci student and needed Ubuntu vm for Linux assembly language
great explanation mate!
Man you are the boss ! Thanks a lot !
Thanks, super helpful video!!
Very useful, i successfully installed it in mac.
If your installation reaches 100% but then it says "aborted", on virtual box audio settings:
DISABLE AUDIO (un-check both audio input and output) AND set audio driver at : NULL Audio Driver!
THANK YOU MATE
You’re the best❤️❤️❤️
I tried but it did not work D: any other suggestions?
Edit: OMGOMGOMG NVM I DIDNT SEE MAKE IT NULL AUDIO DRIVER OMGOMGOMG YEEESSSSS IVE BEEN TRYING FOR 4 HOUSRS YEEYYEEESSSSSS THANKKK YOU SDSOOOOOOO MUCHCHHHHHH
Thanks a lot!! You saved my life
Hello! Thank you for the video, but I could not make it full screen even after I inserted Guest Addition CD Image. What should I do? Thanks!
thank you so much for this video
Great tutorial, thanks.
Great video tutorial it's working on my device iOS
Amazing!!!
saved my life
Hi ben, the first time i tried to show the processor for the first time i clicked out of the file to add the Ubuntu folder. the screen at 13.02 seconds is not loading now. what do you advise i do?
I’m not near a computer right now to look, but you should be able to go to devices in the menu bar, then optical, and you can insert the iso there.
Appreciate this tutorial..
Great Video!!
Oh man you are the lifesaver for me right now, I have spent 4 full days to install ubuntu virtual machine on my WD passport HDD, and I couldn’t find any tutorial working, so I went to forums, and then my mac got the standard error of VM "kernel not downloaded" one, I was mad some are saying you need to reinstall macOS and add some stuff, but it was not that much it is really simple, like 2 min thing(if anyone got that write that here I will tell you). Then finally Ubuntu was running by using this tutorial. I set passwd and I just forgot that like 2 min ago I set and now I completely forgot that, So, I tried to run it in recovery mode and rewrite the password. But in mac, it is not opening in recovery mode. So, I took HDD to my windows laptop and BOOM. it opened in recovery mode. But there username was not detected. So I completely reinstall Ubuntu VM.then I am finally running Ubuntu VM on my HDD on any laptop having VirtualMachine. Anything anyone needs to know then tell me :)
Heyyy I can´t solve the kernel not downloaded problem I have reinstalled macOS what can I do?
@@luciaalvarez37 I couldn't understand the problem can you elaborate more. Please.
@@PrinceDalsaniyaYT I installed Virtual Box but when I try to run a machine the “kernel not installed” error keeps appearing, do you know how to solve it?
Hi Benjamin, my issue is that after inserting the guest additional CD, it still don't show full screen.
Everything works at its best!!
I've found that even if it gives you the error just relaunch the program, drag it into applications, and it worked for me for some reason.
This is so helpful and it worked great. I was wondering if after I customize it is there any way to get the iso file for the customized version?
I’m not sure what you mean. Iso is just to install Ubuntu.
Hi Benjamin! Thank you for this video. I had issues with the installation
My window doesn't resize even though I follow all your instructions correctly.
I’m not sure. Maybe need to install guest addition through the terminal? I think there’s some comments on here where they have a solution.
This is an awesome tutorial - thanks for doing it! my only issue is the window does not update resolution on resizing the window despite running the guest additions CD image. Any tips?
It can be buggy sometimes. You have to resize the window yourself after restart to get it to start changing. Changing the scale factor also might help.
I have an older Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina. I'm afraid of messing it up. Hopefully this VM Ubuntu tutorial will run smoothly on it🤞. I read running a Live USB stick Within the Linux VM tricks it into thinking it's running on the actual hard drive. What do you think?
I have a MacBook Pro mid-2012 with an upgraded RAM of 16 GB and a Crucial SSD of 500 GB. It seems to be slow for the Ubuntu installation and I got the blue and black screens with previous attempts. Any advice?
I could fix the crashing. now the VM ist running. But I can't select and boot ubuntu. Any help with this? I'm working on macOS Big Sur 11.1
I followed your tutorial until the last 2 minutes when you added the cd image from device menu. Mine won't allow me to inert disk.
Can you please help me installing It on my Macbook m3 because this ubuntu desktop is amd but mine supports arm, which is not available
I've been trying to download ubuntu from past 2 months and today finally my old shitty mac is running ubuntu
thank you so much dude you're a god
Very helpful!!
Thank you so much!
